It also could be a service dog. They are so well trained you can take them anywhere.

I have never heard of a Bullmastiff trained as a service dog. They are awesome dogs, my favorite breed, by far. But they are not easy to train in obedience. They are not the type that is greatly eager to please.

Unless their family is in danger, then they will lay their life down to protect it

While true, the exact same thing can be said about Pit Bulls. I know that breed very well. While they're not for everyone, I'd be willing to bet that the Browns are very careful about where they got the dog, it's temperament and training.

yeah those mastiffs get so huge...probably put a saddle on it and let JF ride it out waving a brownie the elf flag

Its not a mastiff

No offense meant to anybody, I understand people dont know, but this type of ignorance to the breed is why I dont want it used.

it is indeed a mastiff, just of the bull variety not the english variety..not sure how its not a mastiff...i just abbreviated but I know exactly what kind of dog it is because my cousin has one and its the worlds biggest lapdog

It is a separate breed. It has been a separate breed that was developed hundreds of years ago. There are many types of mastiffs. Such as Neopolitan...etc...

A Bullmastiff is not a type of mastiff. Hence the one word. Bullmastiff, not Bull Mastiff.

I think through 3 conformation champions, two obedience champions, and a lineage that has produced 10 champions, including an dual nations champion, I know a little about the breed.

I kind of doubt they'll bring in some rum dum and his untrained dog.

Someone will be well paid.

I agree. The dog probably will meet the same standards for dogs they take in to hospitals and nursing homes.

HMM that would be Therapy Dog International. I will have to give my friend who is the director of TDI for Northeast Ohio and see if she knows anything about it

Pardon me for overstepping if I am. However, I don't think Peen was saying it would be a TDI dog. Rather, it would be a dog that was extremely well taken care of, extremely well behaved, extremely well mannered, and extremely well trained. A dog probably along the lines of my cousin's dog that will "sit" on command, and stay there indefinitely. A dog that will run if told to run, and will come back as soon as the command is given. Etc.

Peen said the same standard as the dogs they take into hospitals etc. The standard for those dogs is TDI standards or certification.

There are not a whole lot of Bullmastiff breeders/trainers in the area. It is a pretty small community. Training a Bullmastiff is not like training a lab. You have to know how they operate.

Sure, I said same standards. I didn't say the dog would have to have such certification. All I am saying is the dog will have to be good with people and kids. A well balanced dog.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Agreed. And I'm sure the Browns aren't getting "Swagger" from some stiff in the hood.

Then why did they name it that?

It's not like this is unknown territory or something.... teams of various sports at every level have been using live animals as mascots for more than a century. Maybe even longer than that?

It's nothing more than a few phone calls for our front office to find the people that will lead them to the people that will get them what they want, and an animal with the appropriate temperament and personality will be chosen, and there will be a trainer/handler.

It ain't rocket surgery.

Exactly.

Possibly because it is a mascot? Possibly because it's probably not the dog's real name? You know - kind of like a stage name? Are you really serious? This isn't going to be some dog they just went out and found, named, and said "hope we have good luck with this thing".

It's a dog that has been well trained......and named something completely different than "Swagger" My bet is you could go up to this dog and say "Swagger, sit", and the dog would sit and wonder why the hell you called it a word it's never heard before.

I don't remember who mentioned it, but I'm way over the Dawg thing as a Cleveland Browns fan. I was a Cleveland Browns fan before Minnie and Dixon, and I will always be. It would be like the (soon to be renamed likely) Redskins having a pig as mascot because of the Hawgs.

while that era was awesome I'm still a Browns fan, not a dawgs fan. Sill it doesn't hurt anybody I suppose.

Just a general comment, because I'm too lazy to find the earlier comments ....

Anyway, this dog could well be a dog trained to be a therapy dog. Mascots usually make promotional appearances, and I could see the Browns sending their mascot out to a children's hospital, and other events with children present.

Amazing!!!.

This board can not only argue QBs, politics, race and religion. Now we can argue mascots, and the correct genealogy of a canine. And as usual, the typical personal qualms between posters comes out again.

Look at some of the other threads.

They're not really arguing about mascots right now.

Yeah, that was a carryover from a couple other things. Dude was lit and angry and on the warpath last night. I couldn't help myself from immaturely egging him on.

But the harmless joke in this thread wasn't intended to be any dig or barb. He just exploded for no reason here.

The only thing I'll say about this mascot thing is the pictures I've seen, this dog doesn't look happy. 'Course most dogs have some kind of sad 'gimme sympathy' look in their eyes but…

I don't want a mascot that looks like we do most of the time.

I wasn't "lit". I wasn't "angry". Perhaps you were high? Darn easy to toss accusations, isn't it?

My guess is, as a younger person, you were bullied?

And yes, there was carryover from other things. From both sides. That's important to note. I like pushing his buttons. (now watch........button has been pushed)

Do we play the Jets this year?

Every photographer in that stadium would just be praying that the dog gets in frame anywhere near Vick.

Can it Catch?

First can it catch a Frisbee. Most entertaining halftime show I've seen was dogs catching Frisbee's in Cincy during a preseason.

But then 2nd. Can it catch a football. " There's no rule that says a dog can't play football." So said an Air Bud movie trailer. I didn't see that movie.

( I'm telling you, he threw that dog to the 20. Then the dog looked back, the guy was at the 50 and he threw opposite of the dogs direction, that dog ran from the 20, all the way to the other 30, the whole time the Frisbee was in the air and got it at the very last instant.) Still my favorite halftime show.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

The answer is no, and no.

A bullmastiff is more likely to look at you like your stupid and then lay there while you go fetch the ball or frisbee

I like this idea. Sure beats the elf and anything else they have used.

It's a majestic, strong looking dog that radiates strength and dignity. I also like how we can play "I Will Protect This House" as Swagger leads us out of the tunnel. LOL

" And I'm sure the Browns aren't getting " Swagger" from some stiff in the hood. "
As the other poster stated. I don't see it as a great joke, at first, but get it now.

See Swagger has two meanings, and so does stiff in this context.

Swagger is the dogs name, and it refers to a team having swagger or ability to throw it's weight around, so to speak, or impose it's will.
So 1, the dog's name, and 2. the imposing will.

Then also, Swagger, could be some male prowess er something like that.

Then stiff could have two meanings. See stiff could refer to an average nobody person in the neighborhood. But stiff also can refer to something an object that is rigid and not pliable.
Not exactly Websters dictionary definition.

Hey stiff can also be a Verb, for not leaving a tip. (Like at a restaurant, or the valet, the cabbie.) There's a joke in there somewhere.
