At first I was bit disappointed w/NFL.com not having any videos of the Browns until I scrolled down and saw the big write-up on JM. You'd think that JM and Co. had just won the Super Bowl. They have him starting game one already. Give me a break.
I did see some hi-lights of the Browns game and I do think JM showed a little more than Hoyer BUT not THAT much.
We won't really know anything until he plays with 1's next week.
I still think JM should ride the pines this year. But I'm afraid the fan pressure for a winning team will overide better judgement.

I'll bet a third of Sportscenter late last night was dedicated to Manziel. It was almost nauseating.

It is kinda funny that we are now featured all the time on the NFL side of ESPN, (from what I have been told) because of Manziel ..... and we're featured all the time on the NBA side of ESPN, (from what I have been told) because of Lebron and Love ....... Now all we need is to find a piece for the Indians ..... Of course, I bet that Kluber is a guy who gets a ton of adulation. Put good teams on the field., and for the most part ESPN will cover us.Put interesting players on the field and they will cover us. I remember last year when Weeden started out looking like he might have turned the corner, and he got all kinds of nice coverage. When we start winning, we'll get tons of coverage. Then we can all really get sick of ESPN.

Maybe the Indians should trade for AROD
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I think we'll all be better off when we stop worrying about how much attention we get from ESPN. Define yourself by winning, not by what, or how much, some jagovs in Bristol, Conn. say about you.

Lol. That's what I put on TV and set the 30min timer for when I go to bed. It guarantees that I'll be asleep before the TV shuts off.

If Drennan's All Bets Are Off show is on at the time (and if my wife allows me to change the channel), I usually get bored listening to that fool and am out in a few minutes.

It's sad too. They used to have some really good programming. Now it has all gone downhill.
I listen to the NFLN and I get similar vibes from them. I'd rather come here and see what you folks have seen (well, the ones that I don't have on ignore for reasons not related to football... ) and have to say. It's more informative. As bad as that sounds, it's actually true.

It really is amazing what a 180 Manziel has given ESPN in terms of Browns coverage. I'd bet the GLC wasn't even discussed for 30 seconds last year ... this year it leads off Sportscenter

It wasn't Browns good press, it was Manziel press, and it wasn't all good. It's like Hoyer doesn't even exist. If JF plays up to the hype, then maybe I'll change my tune. Right now he's a second string qb and all this crap is a distraction created by a story starved media.

Hoyer isn't leading the nfl in jersey sales. Hoyer's name won't cause page clicks/traffic. The Johnny hype will overshadow everything. I'm sick of hearing about it. Let the kid play and then get hyped up for the right reasons...

I don't really care, it's just cool to always see the Browns on TV.
I'm also thrilled that he seems to be taking his job seriously now. No more dumb pics, no more defiance through the media. Hes done good job representing Cleveland and the Browns the last few weeks.
It could be worse, they could go back to nonstop Jets coverage, if you want. (boring)

I get the feeling that there are Brown's fans actually rooting against Manziel. That just seems odd to me.
The kid played very well last night. He gives us a chance to finally win. Don't let the hype steer you off the path.

I actually like what I witnessed from both qb's last night in a first preseason game. I don't think the hype is beneficial to anyone but the media.

You'd think that JM and Co. had just won the Super Bowl. They have him starting game one already. Give me a break.
When you have a name like Lou "The Toe" Groza then you'd damn sure better have a Toe. And he had that. Likewise, when you have a name like "Johnny Football" then you'd damn sure better be able to ball. And that's what the interest is. To see if he can live up to his name in the Pros as he did in college.
Personally I don't mind all the attention given the Browns even though it's really given to Manzel and the Browns merely benefit as a result. Johnny Football is a National phenomena. The Browns aren't.
Typically the National media covers the Big Market teams. Big Market equals more fans equals more coverage on those teams. Cleveland is a small market but Manzel changed the dynamic by being a National interest. So suddenly the media is interested in him and through him, the Browns.
NFL players are in it for the love of the game, and the money and the fame. Browns players have always had the love of the game and the money. But they've always lacked the fame by not winning. Johnny is putting them in the spotlight so they're all getting some of the fame now. I think that will feed them in a positive way just like they get pumped for a Monday Night game on National TV.
To double their pleasure, the next game is a Monday Night game and Johnny is very likely to start. National interest will be high. Johnny will and the rest of the players will be all over the NFL Network and ESPN for the rest of the week. If they make plays in that game, along with Johnny they'll be in the highlights the rest of the week too. If Johnny does well the attention will continue past next week and into the next game.
If he's named the starter for that third game then the National media will know that he'll start vs the vaunted Steelers, our biggest rival, and the interest and hype will continue and be at an all-time high all the way through to the opening regular season game and beyond. If he is named the starter and we beat the Steelers the Browns will have been considered to have turned the corner at the hands of Johnny Football. The attention and exposure will be insane.
But first there's a game next Monday and no one knows what that will yield. If Hoyer is named the starter for game three then the National attention will die down and be on hold until if and when Manzel gets the nod to start for whatever reason. Then it will all start up again.
Johnny Football, simply by being who he is, has already taken the Browns out of the "laughing stock" category an into the "team to be interested in for a positive reason" category. And he's really done nothing yet other than not fall flat on his face but rather shown he has great promise . If he does do something then the old perception of the "same old Browns" will change instantly and tremendously.
Will he become that starter? I don't know. Am I pulling for him to be that starter? No. I'm pulling for the best man wins. And then I'll be pulling for that guy.
But that doesn't change what I know to be the reaction if he does.
I don't mind the attention. I think it's good for every aspect of the team.

A few years back, I was required to defend a remark I made about NFLN being a disappointment. Dawgs wanted to know why.
(I can't remember if it was a post here at DT, or another place I frequent).
My main gripe, as I recall went something like this:
"They have unparalleled access to all 32 teams. They have staff that's qualified to go in-depth all across the NFL, and give fans of every team something of value on a regular basis. They had the chance to be something truly special...
...instead, they used the ESPN model, and cheapened the potential of the product in order to compete with ESPN."
IMHO, NFLN missed the boat, big-time. They should have set their target demographic for fans like us. Leave the "front-runner 24/7 lovefest" format to ESPN... they excel at the generic. Instead, work to produce content that would engage someone who is more than just "the casual fan"... and dig 2-3 levels deeper than you'd find on ESPN or CBS Sportsnet. I mean- you really only have one job: cover the NFL. No college, no baseball..."
I'm with you. I come here ALL the time, and I only tune into the TV networks on the rarest of occasions. I get more of what I want here than any of them seem willing to provide.
I'm not positive about what NFLN should do differently, but I have a few ideas. One thing's for sure- I don't feel compelled to tune into them like I do DT.

Hey, Super! Welcome to the boards. Stick around... it's a great place to talk Browns football.
I think I know where jfan is coming from. It kind of relates to a theme that has gone on here for years. This theme is called "The Bandwagon Effect": the phenomenon wherein a team that suddenly gets 'hot' suddenly gets a whoooooooooole lotta new fans... you know- the ones who 'jump on the bandwagon.'
For years, we've been predicting that the minute the long-suffering Browns get something going, folks will be slurping us like they've been slurping the Rats, Stoolz, Colts, Pats... any front-runner team.
And now, it's already happening... and the Browns haven't yet done anything.
It's the preseason. Browns ain't done squat yet (neither has any other team, for that matter)... but just because we drafted a high-profile former college sensation into our midst, Brownies are getting all kinds of 'artificial love' from a suck-up media that chases RATINGS above everything else.
I don't think there are very many Browns fans out there who actually hate ANY player who comes to this team. Especially if he can help. Anyone who's been a Browns fan since even 1999 would be grateful to take any help they can get.
You see.... it's entirely possible to be a Browns fan AND Manziel fan... while still being miffed at the 'fair-weather fan' nature of all this newfound media attention.
I can only speak for myself here, but I think I know jfan pretty well after all these years. He MIGHT be saying:
"What's nauseating is the fact that we've been the butt of countless jokes for years... at the hands of the very same people who are now camped out at 76 Groza like it's a freakin' shrine. It's fake. It's shallow. And it's 'bandwagon.' TRUE FANS know the entire story. You're just know grabbing on to the Browns train. Where were you during all those painful years, you 'hangers-on?'"
+++++++++++++++++++++
By way of introduction, I'd like to tell you a bit about myself. I'm old school Browns from the days of Frank Ryan, Gary Collins, Jim Brown and The Main Man... Paul "Father of Modern Football" Brown.
I was a fan when freakkin' Leroy Kelly was a rookie. I've seen everything this team has done since 1961. And I've seen how they've been treated over the decades by the media. I've especially seen how poorly they've been treated by the media since the day Art Modell slithered out of town- with Cleveland's Heart And Soul.
SuperBrown: I hope you don't blame us for being nauseated at the kind of coverage we're now getting. So far, it's still not really about the Browns, our beloved team. It's still all about ONE PLAYER on our team... a player who hasn't yet won a single NFL game behind center.
It would have been kind of nice for other NFL fans to have known something about us before this. Something other than: "Those Lovable, Laughable 'Believeland Clowns'."
I don't hate Manziel. Not in the least. I don't think jfan does either.
I think we're reacting more to the type of media coverage of our team, than we are the person who has attracted the coverage.
Do you gsee the distinction/difference?

Agreed. I'm not buying into Manziel until he proves he can win. On the plus side, the hype means I got to watch a Browns preseason game in Colorado. This will be my 8th year in Colorado and this was the first time I have got to watch a Browns preseason game live out here.
If Manziel becomes the #1 QB, I may have wasted my money on Sunday ticket this year.
It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

See the post directly following yours.
Personally, I don't care about all the hype, other than it gets us more coverage and I like that because I live out-of-state. Bandwagon fans? I don't care. They don't effect me one way or the other.
I do know that I am not going to blame Manziel for the coverage. He isn't paying the networks and reporters to follow him. All I care about is if he can help us win. Now, if he starts getting busted for drugs like Gordon has, I will change my tune, but right now, he hasn't been caught doing anything that would hurt the team. So, how about we sit back and just root for the guy while dismissing the media for doing what the media always does?

I totally get that. I tune in sometimes, but I could give you something that the NFLN could do - teach people about the game. Shows that teach about what receiver routes are, what the defensive packages are, rules (well - maybe not this, they change every year), etc. Maybe the obscure rule, like drop kicks and stuff like that.
My wife loves to watch shows where she learns something.

There is almost no chance Manziel doesn't play this year. From a pure football perspective he gives us the best chance at winning.

I kinda get that sense as well.
For years people have been saying we need someone with fire, someone with attitude. We finally get that and it does seem as though there are some who are almost hoping he fails.
I'm not talking about people who aren't ready to anoint him as the franchise man, or ready to hand him the starting job. Way too early for that. But hoping he fails makes no sense. I it because they didn't want to draft him and if he fails they would be proven right? I would rather be proven wrong by one of our guys performing better than I expected than to be right about him.

GM, was talking about Johnny as it does seem there are people wanting him to fail. I do not get that sense with Hoyer, but do agree that he brings that to the table as well. We didn't get a big sample of Brian last year, but the game felt different with him on the field. I liked the fire and leadership. And I felt how different it was when he left that game injured. You get the sense that the players believe in him, and will follow him.
I was not a Johnny guy and was leery of drafting him. But we have him and I back him and hope he succeeds. If we start Hoyer and win with him, I am more than good with that as well. Both guys bring something we have lacked for a while. A leader is someone one follows because they want to, and not because there is a line on some org chart that says they have to. We just might have two of those now, and that is all good.

I'll bet a third of Sportscenter late last night was dedicated to Manziel. It was almost nauseating.
NAUSEATING?????????? The Browns NEED all the GOOD PRESS THEY CAN GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What planet are you from????????? Another little Manziel HATER? Geeezzzzzzzzzzzz................
Hey, Super! Welcome to the boards. Stick around... it's a great place to talk Browns football.
Thanks for the welcome Clem. As you know I was a hated and loved legend on the Browns main chatsite. ... Very thankful for this board, because most of you guys have excellent football knowledge and I am always learning as I read, so I thank you for that. To the issue at hand, I understand the annoyance of some people here of JF, BUT I will never be annoyed at any press coverage for our beloved Browns, unless it is the usual bad press. I also will state as an SEC fan ROLL TIDE!!! I watched about 90% of Johnny's games for the Aggies and I can tell you this guy is no flash in the pan college gimmick quarterback. This guy has real skill. He has large hands which make him less of a fumbler and a strong armed passer. Not Elway like, but you don't need that to win. He is also smart. He knows where to go with the ball. He can make split second decisions in pressure situations. His escapability is Tarkenton like. He played the elite teams of the nation and only LSU seemed to give him trouble with the mush rush. Bottom line is, he is a natural gifted athlete who doesn't panic ala Weeden (Flipper) and all the others. While many think JF will flop and fear all this media attention will backfire all I can say is Johnny is going to prove you wrong. He is just too smart and gifted to fail. JMHO
