Do you guys think they are worth buying now?I'm very close to buying a 65" Sony 4k. Asking price is $4,000, with a mount, hdmi cable and delivery it's close to $4500. They also want to throw in a 5 yr service plan for 500, to make it close to $5,000.
I love the picture quality, and sound. Best I've ever seen on a tv, but most people think were 2 years away from all programming being 4k. Is it wise to invest in the service plan? I've bought plenty of tv's over the years, and never needed one. Even when I buy cars, I pass on extended warranties.

Isn't that always the way it works?
Plus, with new technology, you always take the risk that early adopters will be the only adopters. Not only that, but you will pay a massive premium until it becomes more common technology.
I think that I would wait .... because there will, inevitably, be bugs. There will be advances in subsequent models that will be unavailable in this one. As long as more people want to have 3-D TV, the price will drop. There are already refurbished models available (not your model, but 3-D units) on K-Mart's site for under $1000. If it were me, I would wait for the pricing to drop ..... but I have grown cheaper as time has gone by, and as I have bought bigger, faster, better over the years, only to see even bigger, even better, even faster become the average shortly thereafter, and also even cheaper.
If it were me, unless there was content that I absolutely had to see in 3-D, I would wait. That's just me though.

Wise? Probably not. People who can afford big toys can afford replacements or timely repairs so buying the insurance doesn't tend to make a ton of sense in the big picture. Besides, ask yourself this question: If it wasn't a money-maker for the companies, why do they all offer it?
The time for 4k TV's is coming, but it's not here yet.
Having said all that, I'm not a firm believer that just because something doesn't "make sense" it shouldn't be purchased. While it doesn't represent a worthwhile or necessary gamble to have purchased an extended warranty on my SHO, I sleep better at night knowing that if something craps out at the 95k mile mark it's covered. How much is peace of mind worth? Also, it doesn't make much sense for me to buy a brand new set of $1k Mizuno irons when my 3-year old irons are doing the job...but it sure is fun to have a new toy. If you've a hole in your pocket and want a new toy, dude, go for it...you can't take it with you...and the kids likely haven't deserved it yet!

monoprice.com is your friend. Mount and HDMI can be had MUCH cheaper than that with no loss in quality and delivery sounds like its absurd too.

The first question should be, "Why do you want one?", The content is not really there yet, a lot of it is upscaled so it's not true 4k, and as always, early adopters pay alot.
I would give it a year or 2, it didn't take long for us to go from flat screen plasma TVs being available, to HD LCD/LED TVs being the only thing you can even buy anymore.
Then add in that, not only will the price drop over the next couple years, the options, quality, etc will change too. Early HD TV adopters missed out on a lot of progress in the HDMI standards, much like not many TVs are coming with the ability to display content without a box, if you have the primary converter (Like DTVs Whole Home DVR, or Dishes Hopper)
Also, if you plan to stream 4K, your probably going to need to be hard wired or have the new 802.11ac wifi adapter built in to the TV or adapter. I don't think the other will stream fast enough to maintain steady stream in 4k.
Ultimately it is like anything, if you just want it to say you have it, then go ahead, if you want it to truly get the advantages of it, then wait a little longer and let the technology grow and advance to the 2nd generation.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I would seriously wait for the technology to catch up and for the prices to come down. In 2 years, every new TV will be 4K UHD and be priced around where they flat screens are now (or at least in the ball park). This also gives the manufacturers time to work out the kinks, bugs and bake in the best features.
I can understand the excitement of moving to the newest, coolest technology but from a practical point of view, it makes more sense to wait.

I am constantly amazed every time I walk by the electronics department at Wal-Mart, and see all of the "outdated" TVs available for next to nothing. They had a 50" TV, last time I was in, for right around $600. They had a 40" for $250 or so. It's insane. They aren't the top end, but the 50" is a Samsung, and I have had good luck with their stuff in the past. A 1080P LED, internet connected, 50" TV for $600 is just amazing. That's a 60 Hz. Want a 120 Hz set? Well, they have one fr $28 more. Insane. I bet that they sold far worse sets for 4 times the money (or probably more) just maybe a year and a half or so ago.

I agree. if your spending more than 2000 your getting ripped off so bad. So many deals out there. Chances are you will never even notice the difference since there is so little content out there to push beyond standard HD anyways. 1080 with 120 refresh is about all you need for great tv. Take that other 3000 on a trip to vegas =)

Think about it for a couple of weeks. Research what you're really getting for the price, look into when cable and/or satellite companies will offer the content for it and if after a couple of weeks you still want it and can afford it, go get it.

I bought a $1,500 Plasma TV, 50" 5 years ago.
Works great. 4k on a TV? I'd rather invest that money in a house, or pay off my car, anything else really...

That price is too high (for me, anyway). Regardless of everything else, there are less expensive (and superior) 4K screens for much less out there.
I wouldn't worry about the content, as those TV's up-convert. They can take a 1080 signal and interpolate the missing data to artificially smooth the picture. It won't be the same, but it'll be an improvement. As the content arrives, you'll be wowed, but the content will arrive on BluRay, first. It'll be a while (years) before you see it on broadcast or even cable/satellite due to bandwidth constraints.
As for size... there is an optimal size TV for every room, and it is NOT based upon your wallet... it is based upon the room and how far you will be sitting from the screen. So - unless a 65" screen is the correct screen size for where you will be sitting, you won't need a screen that large. and can probably do just fine with something much smaller (and less expensive). LG has a 55" Smart 4k 3D screen for under $2,000. Their 65" is under $3,000 at HHGregg, and their 49" is $1500. They even currently have a 65" model (65LA9650) for $2300.

p.s. -- When it comes to mounts, shop Walmart/Sam's Club... very good mounts for dirt cheap. The one I hang my TV on (55") I got at Sam's for $50.00.
For HDMI cables, shop Amazon.com... unless you need something longer than a 10' cable, if you pay more than $10 for your HDMI cable, you are throwing your money away. Heck, I can get a 6' HDMI 1.4 cable for $5.99 - with free two day shipping.

This... I have a friend that blew a wad on a 70" TV. The room it is in in a back bedroom about 10 x 11, his "home theater". When you sit in the recliners he has and watch, you are bobbing your head like watching a tennis match from the court because you can't get everything in your field of vision from 9' away.

For reference: Crutchfield.com

To add to this:
THX recommends a size that will fill 40 degrees of your vision. The SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends a 30 degree angle.
In English, that means to take your viewing distance (from where your eyes are when your butt is on the couch or in your chair to where the screen will be - in inches) and multiply by 0.84 for the appropriate screen diagonal for the THX recommendation, or multiply by 0.625 for the same under the SMPTE recommendation.
The safe bet? Split the difference and multiply your viewing distance in inches by 0.7325 and rest comfortably in the middle.

Even 10 bucks is pushing it. I bought a 30 foot one (Cheaper than finding a streaming server that can play .mkv) for 10 bucks about 4 months ago.

If you're gonna sink that much into a TV, I would get a Samsung over a Sony. I have two Sony's and my dad has a Samsung. The Samsung's picture looks much more realistic.

SAMSUNG ‘SMART TV’ RECORDS “PERSONAL” CONVERSATIONS & SENDS THEM TO THIRD PARTIES http://www.infowars.com/samsung-smart-tv-records-personal-conversations-sends-them-to-third-parties/Company's new privacy policy causes consternation by PAUL JOSEPH WATSON | NOVEMBER 3, 2014 Samsung’s new global privacy policy for its line of Smart TVs states that a user’s personal conversations will be recorded by the device’s microphone and transmitted to third parties. A 46-page privacy policy which is now included in all newly purchased Samsung Smart TVs states that voice recognition technology “may capture voice commands and associated texts” in order to “improve the features” of the system. The policy, a summary of which is also posted online, ominously advises users to, “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition.” Writing about the privacy policy for Salon.com, Michael Price, counsel in the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, said he was now “terrified” of his new TV, noting that voice recognition is just one feature that could be used to spy on users. The television also logs website visits, has a built-in camera for facial recognition and uses tracking cookies to detect “when you have viewed particular content or a particular email message.” “I do not doubt that this data is important to providing customized content and convenience, but it is also incredibly personal, constitutionally protected information that should not be for sale to advertisers and should require a warrant for law enforcement to access,” writes Price, adding that current privacy laws offer little protection against “third party” data. Price also draws attention to comments made in 2012 by former CIA director David Petraeus, who hailed the “Internet of things” as a transformational boon for “clandestine tradecraft”. In other words, it will soon be easier than ever before to keep tabs on the population since everything they use will be connected to the web, with total disregard for privacy considerations. The spooks won’t have to plant a bug in your home or your vehicle, you will be doing it for them. As we have documented, the Internet of things is the process of manufacturing every new product with a system that broadcasts wirelessly via the world wide web, allowing industry and the government to spy ubiquitously on every aspect of your existence. In recording private conversations for potential third party use, Samsung is merely mimicking what games console makers have done for years. Since its launch in 2010, Microsoft’s X-Box Kinect games device has a video camera and a microphone that records speech. The company informs its users that they “should not expect any level of privacy concerning your use of the live communication features,” while Microsoft also “may access or disclose information about you, including the content of your communications.” Last year, Microsoft was forced to deny claims that the Xbox One’s Kinect camera could see gamers’ genitals after video footage emerged which suggested the device’s IR camera was so sophisticated that it could capture the outline of a user’s penis. Gamers also complained that Kinect was monitoring their Skype conversations for swearing and then punishing them with account bans. With Christmas fast approaching, millions more people will splash the cash on games consoles and smart TVs completely oblivious to the fact that they are paying to have their private conversations recorded and potentially transmitted to third parties. I don't know about anyone else, but if I buy a TV, and it has a 46 page privacy policy, I am probably returning the darn thing. Man, a TV that records your private conversations and transmits it to a 3rd party? I'll live with my "dumber" devises.

Problem is, if Samsung is doing it, LG, Panasonic and the others probably are too.
The last thing I want is a TV that I can talk to and/or one that has a camera, watching me watch it.

I was thinking about this while reading this thread .... but I read an article about the government using webcams to spy on people. I never use my webcam, so I taped over the darn thing. Maybe I'm paranoid ... but regardless, no one is going to watch me fall asleep and drool at my desk. (as sometimes happens with some of my medication)

The last thing I want is a TV that I can talk to and/or one that has a camera, watching me watch it. Just about everyone of you has a cell phone, correct? The majority of you have been carrying a listening device and Lojack for years. It's better to just assume someone is listening to you in this day and age, because they probably are. They obviously have the means to do it.

j/c For $39,997.99, you can pick this set up on Amazon. The reviews are priceless. Samsung UN85S9 Framed 85-Inch 4K Ultra HD 120Hz 3D Smart LED TV http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN85S9-Framed-85-Inch-Ultra/dp/B00CMEN95U/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_topHere are a few: I was going to fund my daughters wedding in Hawaii, but I figured this Samsung TV would last much longer. This is the best TV out there for watching documentaries about starving children. You can really feel their pain. I purchased this for my Atari 2600 and wow did it make a difference! Also, I am very thankful that it has low energy costs as I am on a very tight budget. I used the money I saved by switching to the affordable care act to buy this TV. Thanks President Obama!

LOL That's great. Geesh, an 85 inch TV? That is just over 7 feet. I couldn't even fit that in my living room with enough room to be able to see it. I have a 60 inch TV, and I cannot imagine fitting anything larger in there at all.

I have that very TV you're talking about and it is glorious. I upgraded from a Samsung 55" 1080p LED and the difference between the two is very noticeable. I would make the purchase again if given the chance. 4K blu-rays and blu-ray players will be out near the end of THIS year. Netflix already has some 4K content that needs to be seen to be believed (House of Cards looks insane), and the TV automatically upscales all content so that it looks better than 1080p. 4K is alive and well right now, so you might as well make the purchase and start enjoying it early. Do yourself a favor and get surround sound for it instead of the warranty. When I have the surround sound on in the living room and the lights off at night, I feel like I'm in a movie theater. Don't rely on a TV's speakers when it's that kind of TV, that would partially defeat its purpose. I've never needed to use an extended warranty on a TV once in my life and I've had quite a few TVs.
