Very sad, talented man. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-robin-williams-dies-20140811-story.htmlRobin Williams dies at 63 in apparent suicide Oscar-winning actor and comic Robin Williams died Monday at 63 of an apparent suicide, the Marin County Sheriff's Department confirmed. Around 11:55 a.m. Monday, sheriff's officials said, a 911 call came in about a man unresponsive in his home in Tiburon. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Dubbed “the funniest man alive” by Entertainment Weekly in 1997, Williams brought audiences hours of laughter, putting his imaginative spin on characters in film and television. He was lauded for his serious roles as well, winning a best supporting actor Oscar for his performance as Sean Maguire, the therapist who counsels Matt Damon’s math genius in “Good Will Hunting”(1997), and receiving nominations for “The Fisher King” (1991), “Dead Poets Society” (1989) and “Good Morning, Vietnam” (1987). Born in Chicago in 1951, Williams became one of only two students accepted into John Houseman’s prestigious acting program at Julliard, the other being Christopher Reeve, who became a lifelong friend. Williams gained fame as Mork, the bizarre, suspenders-sporting alien on the sitcom “Mork & Mindy,” a spinoff from “Happy Days.” Williams departed from the script so often that producers intentionally left blank moments on page for Williams to have space to indulge his ad-libbing genius.

This is literally tantamount to what it might've been like if my parents generation lost Carol Burnett. One of those celebrities that you grew up with and would shake their hand and say, 'thanks for a lifetime of laughs!' if you got the chance to meet them somewhere. We used to joke about the previous nights Mork & Mindy (as did you all I'm sure) the next day in grade school… Thanks for the laughs Robin. R.I.P

Sad and shocking. What a talent and entertainer. RIP

From Entertainment WeeklyWhile his publicist wouldn’t confirm that his death was a suicide, a rep did issue this statement. “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.” Severe depression…just heart breaking.

This is really sad as he was always one of my favorites. Maybe all the drugs he did earlier in his life finally got to him in his old age. I will miss his routines greatly though =(

I read that too. Depression is a disease. He battled alcohol, and drugs, was clean from alcohol for about 20 years, then went back to it.
Depression can be a killer, and it doesn't apply to just the sufferer - it affects others that are close to the person with depression.
And some might say "geez, what would he have to be depressed about? Fame, fortune, no worries....." Depression doesn't work that way.
Regardless, he was a talented, funny person. RIP Mr. Williams.

People with that much energy usually die by overdose or suicide.
Saw him live many times. Met him once.

His career lasted as long as I've been alive (Happy Days appearance was '74). Wow, stunned.

Mork and Mindy is before my time (born in 86), but I used to love the reruns

You are right. Many successful people battle depression. The real problem is depression is often thought of women lying in bed eating bon bons and crying. It's just not true for men.
I was depressed for a long time after my father died but I didn't realize it. Then last year, the empty nest, mid life crisis and depression really hit me hard and it seemed out of nowhere right at the beginning of the year.
I couldn't concentrate, I couldn't read, tasks that usually took me an hour at work took several. I started to question my life, what I didn't have, what I wanted but couldn't.
Most men self medicate their depression with drugs, alcohol, sex, porn, work. I highly immersed myself in work. Anything to avoid going home. I'd work 10-12 hour days, 7 days a week. I totally withdrew from my family and friends. I locked them out. I felt guilty about anything and everything.
I went to a psychiatrist. Took pills. I couldn't sleep so I was given sleeping pills. I put a knife to my wrist but the sleeping pills kicked in and I laid on the kitchen floor bleeding and asleep. Tried to commit suicide. Thank God, my wife found me.
I would have panic attacks after panic attack.
Was hospitalized for a week at St. E's. last year
I got angry. Frustrated. Took it out on furniture and end tables and dining room chairs.
I was thrown in jail over MLK weekend this year. That was a real eye opener!
I almost lost my wife of 21 years as I blamed all my problems on her. I walked out of the house on her.
I almost lost my job.
I'm getting better. I go to therapy. But none of my friends understand. They think this "is what being a man is."
If I was an alcoholic, they'd understand. But I didn't choose alcohol or drugs. There is a great Youtube video of Craig Ferguson talking about his bout with alcohol. Look it up if you like, that was me minus the booze. I ran, hid, hid at work.
My self esteem was shot. I became paranoid.
My life last year was hell. I don't even think I looked at this board at all last year.
I would have conversations with people. Active conversations. Walk away, and not a minute later not remember a thing that was said. Not a thing.
Sorry to ramble on like this, but this is no joke. I wouldn't have made the front page like Robin, just the obits.
I guess if any of the above sounds familiar to you, maybe you, a friend . . . . be there for them. And understand.
Sad to see Robin go. Rest in peace.

Two separate things:
1. It's tragic irony that a man many considered the funniest man in the world suffered from depression. I think arch got it right. Depression is a tough thing to deal with. I am so sad that Robin Williams ended his life this way. It has kinda got me shook up, as if something is off-kilter in the universe. I never met the guy. I wasn't his biggest fan. I am not even a guy who watches TV or many movies. But man, when a man such as he can take his own life, it makes us examine who we are and our place in society. It's a very fragile thing. Many of us get depressed. I think one of the best things that ever happened to me was when I was recently diagnosed w/a tumor on my carotid artery. My wife [in the medical field] both assumed it was cancerous and that I was history because the tumor was huge. I haven't always appreciated life the way I should and when I received the diagnosis, I knew I wanted to live. I could accept death, but I really, really wanted to live. It's changed my outlook on life. Uhhmmmm...I think I am rambling. Sorry.
2. blue: Hey man, I won't say anything on this thread, but it looks like you could use someone to talk to. PM me, and if you don't, I will PM you...............we can talk. Not sure if I can help, but I would love to try.

I hope you endure your struggle my man. I'm not middle aged and I haven't even experienced my 30s yet, but I empathize with you. Keep fighting the good fight and i'll pray for you. And maybe a Browns Super Bowl run will also help!

RIP Mr. Williams.
Isn't there an axiom that goes something along the lines of: The funniest people are often the saddest?
What a shame that such a talented man had so many demons that he just could not conquer.
I have been given a new outlook on depression with the incident I had with a different medication not that long ago. I admit that I had always thought that depression was more a mental weakness than anything else. Man did I learn a lesson there. I was absolutely wrong.

Nice. You know..............a bunch of us argue, but we are all Brown's fans in the end. I remember when I drunkenly confessed that I was going to have surgery [I really didn't want to let anyone know, but I was drunk, down, and shot off my big mouth] and some posters PMed me. I was embarrassed for being so weak to admit to being sick, but it made me feel good that some people reached out. What was really amazing was that mac and Dj PMed me. mac and I have fought from day one. We have NEVER agreed. Yet, he reached out to me. It meant a lot to me. With Dj it was similar. We had been killing each other on the board since I came back. He was cool and funny. It also meant a lot to me. The point is that let's not let this brother down. Let's reach out and help a brother when he needs it.

Depression is a bitch! I struggle with it daily. I've been on a few different meds and just recently began a new one, I hope it helps. I have way too much to live for, but there are days when it's a struggle to remember those things. I keep pictures of my kids and husband every where to serve as a constant reminder of everything I love most in this world.
But there are days I can hardly get out of bed, or concentrate, or just try to not cry all day. It is a constant battle for me, but one I fully intend to win. Years ago (around 25 years ago), I attempted suicide. No one knows about it but me. I popped a bunch of Tylenol...obviously not enough to kill me but it was more than a person should take at one time. As I was crouched over the toilet puking that stuff back up, I realized how much I wanted to live. But I understand where the desperation and sadness come from. I get it.
I masked my depression with fake smiles so good most folks have no idea. I am trying to get my life right health wise and this is the first step, clearing up the mental issues. After that, I tackle the physical.
R.I.P. To a wonderfully talented, brilliantly comedic, but ultimately sad man. Your humor will be missed.

Damn,,, Reports I saw last night said he was depressed., You have to wonder, what did he have to be depressed about about?
Extremely successful actor, comedian. Wealthy and from all accounts healthy physically.
He did suffer addiction early in life, but I thought that was over with.,
I guess you just never know what can hurt a person.
RIP Robin,,, you were a VERY funny guy. Loved about everything he did.

This is very sad.
Personally, I wasn't a big fan of Robin Williams the stand-up comedian, but he was one of my favorite screen actors.
Although he didn't venture off too much from the comedy roles, some of his best work was when he did Dead Poet's Society and Good Will Hunting. Being able to step away from the crazy, manic roles and into drama and believable characters just made you appreciate the diversity of his talents.
It's too bad he is gone but his work will still make an impact on those who watch him. RIP
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.
