Thought Grossman would have been signed months ago. Not surprised Thigpen was cut.

IDK, last year we were using our 3rd QB by week 9 or 10.

Cue the "We are Trading Hoyer" rumors......

Given the recent history of having to play three QB's seemingly every year, hopefully Grossman will be a more solid option.

I kind of wanted Shaw as our 3rd QB,... this probably takes him out of the mix.

I wonder how much playing time Shaw will now get in preseason. I wonder if the plan is to not showcase him in front of other teams then slip him onto the practice squad.

First thing I thought of. And I'm still officially in the "Hoyer gets the start at the beginning of the season..." bandwagon. No matter how it goes I just want the best for the Browns.

Makes sense, bringing Rex Grossman in to help teach Shanahan's offense to our QBs.

I think that as well. The fact that he didnt even touch the ball in the Detroit game says he doesn't get the pros or the playbook yet. But in college in 24 TD's and only ONE interception. A good back up prospect if he can be developed.

And i won't miss Thigpen.

memphis...might be that one of our QBs...or possibly both QBs need some extra teaching.

we probably thought we could get by without him taking up a roster spot. Hopefully, we bury Shaw on the depth chart and he makes it to the PS.

Just to fire up speculation....maybe Johnny is set to win the competition and the Browns will trade Brian....Rex becomes the veteran QB we need.

Based on what I saw on the field...no way do the Browns trade Hoyer...knowing Manziel still likes to run and go down head first. If the Browns would trade Hoyer, they are one play away from having NO QBs for 2014.

. And if this were the case why would Hoyer still be getting first string practice reps as of yesterday?

A coach can only spend so much time coaching the players...a fellow player who just happens to have years of experience running Shanahan's offense, could step in and help out a fellow teammate who needs more coaching (maybe Manziel).

I am not surprised at all after preseason game1. Thigpen was about as bad as a QB can possibly be. I mean, that was terrible even considering the QB play we have seen the past 15 years.

I think the coaches are planning on not playing Shaw much in preseason and hoping they can stash him on the PS this year. He has some physical arm strengthening to do before he can be a real NFL QB (why he was UDFA), so it makes sense.

Rex is fine as a QB3 in that case. And, who knows, maybe Houston gets desperate for a QB and gives us a haul for Hoyer

Or Manziel! Maybe we decided Hoyer can do it and send the Circus back to Texas

Makes sense to pick up Rex. I'm sure Rex was hoping for more with another team but decided to sign on with his pal.

As far as trading Hoyer.. No way. We couldn't get anything in return of equal value, especially a backup QB.

I agree....both on trading Hoyer...mostly, and the coaching part. The reason are the same now as when this was discussed back in June.

Good Move

Some of us need to get real...really!!

Detroit was the "first" preseason game and Hoyer is still trying to shake off the rust after not playing in a game for 10 months. I thought Hoyer looked real good considering the lay off.

While JF was out in Vegas partying, Hoyer was likely spending time reading "stuff" that looked a lot like Shanahan's playbook...therefore, I would expect JF to be way behind Hoyer when it comes to knowing the playbook...

...that might explain the need for a veteran QB who happens to be a student of Kyle Shanahan's offense.

We need to see more from both QBs before any decision can be made about who starts. Manziel has a lot of catching up to do...maybe he should have nixed the partying thing.

edit...and let me add...one head first slide by Manziel and he could be out for the year...one bad, feet first slide by Hoyer and he could be done for the year.

Browns fans seem to forget quickly, rarely do the Browns make it through a season without one QB getting injured...

...we will need both Hoyer and Manziel, regardless of which one starts.

Big time upgrade on Thigpen. Thats all this means. He was to be a veteran back up who wasn't much help. In come Grossman. Good mentorer, Hoyer is not mentoring JM, he's fighting for a job. If you watch JM he is always talking with Thigpen looking at pictures etc along w/or sometimes without the QB coach.

Now he will be doing that with Grossman, that is why he is here. Especially if we start Hoyer and want JM to learn. They will go over everything together as Hoyer is out there. Or if he ends up the starter he needs a Grossman to mentor him.

I think a good move.

Shaw at best will get on our practice squad and run the scout O. He wasn't really in the mix for anything but Practice Squad or a Roster Spot as #3.

jmho all good in this no down side.

If we're actually in the Wild Card Hunt in November, that itself will be enough to make everything else ok.

November 16 we were 4-6 with the wild card #2 teams (several) at 5-5. then, the next 6 games happened.
