I have been meaning to put this out on the board for some time.......If anyone has ever thought of coming to Alaska you should do it. If any fellow browns fans ever wanted some inside info I got it. I'd even offer a couch and floor space for sleeping! I fish like mad, and hunt a little.
Everyone should visit b3theydie! An example.........it is 60 degrees right now, super sunny with bluebird skies, We have a ton of 5,000 foot mountain right outside of anchorage, and it didn't get dark last night until 10:45. (sunset at 10pm)
Anyway just a friendly invite to the most beautiful place on earth!
Mike Vechter!

Always thought of taking my Dad up there to go on some sort of fish/hunting trip... just don't know where to start. I've heard it is beautiful up there.

Been there. Nice place. Wouldn't want to live there, but had a good time when I visited.

Is it true that residents of Alaska receive a paycheck from the federal or state government just for living in Alaska?

My buddies folks went up there when they lost the farm. In 5 years they made enough to payoff their debts. His brother stayed up there . Ketchican I think. He loves it. Said all he does is drink, fish and hunt when not working. Also very few women. Sounds like Heaven. I'm pretty sure women don't go to Heaven anyway.

I'm admittedly very interested in Alaska.
Would love to visit there, it's just so darn expensive. Have recently looked into Alaskan cruises, which aren't that bad - usually taking off and ended in Vancouver (which I've also heard is a great town). I may "fall" soon (in Beerdowners eyes 1-2 years to the marriage bug) and would actually like to do Alaska and an Alaskan cruise for my honeymoon.
My main personal travel goal is to watch the Browns play in every NFL stadium. I'm about 1/3 of the way there on that one. Secondary goal is to see as many wild animals as I can. And that's what really intrigues me about Alaska. Wild animals you can see in the wilderness, from a distance, that you'll never get a chance to in the "48."

Do not have the funds to get myself settled in a place like that. But one day I plan to move into the wilderness only to be seen on occasion when I come into town for supplies. To me there is something romantic in my mind about living like a real mountain man, hermit , or whatever I would be called. Crazy perhaps.
Einstein could not even fathom the mathematical improbabilities of the Browns woes.

It isn't that expensive!! Ok it can be! Though there are ways to cut the costs. RV renting is one. Tent camping another. Any town in Ak that has any kind of lodging will also have an RV hookup and tent spots. Last night I noticed the sun setting at 11 pm out my window, and it was light out when I woke up! While it's 50 degrees this morning there is still snow on the mountains which makes them look awesome! You really do get paid to live up here, the dividend is about $1000 each year, but stuff is expensive so you really end up spending more than that on food etc. Jobs pay good up here though. Man the fishing is fantastic. I fished about 100 days last year. I caught 2 king salmon (22lbs and one 38lbs), something like 1000 Red salmon (8lbs each usually), about 50 silver salmon (10lbs each) and lots of pinks, rainbows, lake trout, Dolly Varden, Grayling, and pike. I just love fishing up here. Wildlife is pretty amazing too. I live in Anchorage, 250,000 people or over half of our state population, and last night saw a Great Horned Owl when I was walking on a trail by the coast which is downtown! Also I saw Moose three times last week, but they are leaving the city to go eat grass and stuff on the mountains now. Last year while fishing I saw 8 bears total. Both Black and Brown bears. You can even see whales from anchorage! (ok belugas are little white whales but still more or less a whale!). Also while the winters are long they are great! Usually crisp and clear in winter around anchorage with an average temp of 10 degrees, but dry. There is unbelievable skiing and snowboarding. If you like to ride snowmobiles this is heaven on earth as you go wherever you want. Throw the Northern Lights on top of that and even winter is something not to miss!! I

If your ever looking for a reasonably close "wilderness" destination, I highly recommend this place in Mattawa, Ontario, Canada (just north of Algonquin Park, about 9 hour drive from Cleveland): http://lauberge.ca/Sits right on the Mattawa river, about a mile into the river valley from the closest road. Very serene. Not unusual to see deer, moose, black bear, pheasants wandering around on the property. Fishing is incredible on the river - northern pike and trout are plentiful. Guy that owns it is a native Clevelander, great guy.

Being a avid fisherman & hunter, I fell in love with Wyoming & Montana just driving thru when I was about 15 -16 always wanted to live out thier, Alaska sounds just as beautiful, hopefully someday i'll be able to visit.
The thought of living in a log cabin by a lake over seeing mountains, catching fresh fish from the lake & streams and hunting deer, moose, bear with a bow is exciting just typing this, always been a dream of mine.
