Look, Manziel may end up being a stud for us.....but I hate any time some one other than the GM is said to be a factor in a player being selected.

'Signs of Johnny Manziel's struggles evident in poor practice outings'

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jaso...ractice-outings

Johnny Manziel's ugly debut outing last week prompted no shortage of concern within the Browns organization given how historically bad it was. While it remains a very small sample size, when coupled with his troubling outings at practice, has certainly caused some alarm with a hope that he can take a step forward at Carolina.

Sources said the same erratic and at times non-existent footwork he displayed in his starting debut, the hyper-activity in the pocket, the poor decision-making and the overall overwhelmed nature of his performance was very similar to what he displayed in practice all week. He appeared outwardly nervous and unsure, as was the case in practice as well once he was named the starter.

One source estimated the 2014 first-round pick completed maybe 40 percent of his passes in practice leading up to his first start, and there was considerable angst about whether that would transpire on Sunday, or whether the bigger stage would bring something better out of the youngster.

With things so bad in his debut, the Browns are trying to instill more fundamental pocket work in the game plan this week, sources said, with fewer read-option looks or plays that would lead directly into Manziel taking off running. The hope is to slow him down a little and get him playing the position more soundly and traditionally, without sapping his athleticism.

He was a little better in practice this past week, sources said, but not exponentially so, and is working on not giving away so much with his eyes and locking on to options, particularly big receiver Josh Gordon. At Texas A&M, he could get away with throwing jump balls to huge star receiver Mike Evans with regularity, but overshot teammates Sunday and the Bengals defense had far too easy a time determining where the ball would be going.

While it may not be time to panic just yet, sources said if that opening performance is indicative of what transpires in the final two weeks, then panic could set in much sooner than would be the norm in these situations. Working in Manziel's favor is the fact that owner Jimmy Haslam was a primary reason he was selected by the team.

You gotta wonder who to believe? Just a week or two ago we read:

Teammates say Johnny Manziel is a “nightmare” in practice

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...re-in-practice/

Posted by Darin Gantt on December 12, 2014, 4:53 PM EST

The Bengals might be a bit size-ist when it comes to the debut of Johnny Manziel as a starter Sunday, but his own teammates know he can create big problems.

In practice, at least.

Browns safety Donte Whitner told Albert Breer of the NFL Network that Manziel was a “nightmare” to practice against because of his ability to improvise.

“You see him being Johnny Football,” Whitner said. “You don’t see him trying to duplicate anybody’s quarterbacking style, just sitting in the pocket.

“If something’s not right, you see him using his instincts and his intangibles, breaking the pocket. That’s where I can see growth.”

The Browns are doing everything they can to make Manziel comfortable in the starting role.

The fact they’re trading on the element of surprise — and that Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had success with a similarly skilled rookie in Washington when he coached Robert Griffin III — gives the Browns an element of hope this weekend.

“I think he’s got enough,” wide receiver Josh Gordon said. “He’s got what we need right now to move forward and pull off these last three wins.

“He’s willing to do anything, extend a play, and make something out of nothing. That mindset isn’t in everybody. A lot of guys will quit, take a sack or throw the ball away. That’s not what he does.”

And that’s why we’ll all be tuning in on Sunday.

I agree about LaCanfora and noticed that trend as well.

However, I think the story is legit and explains the performance of the team last week.

Joe Thomas said the team would be giving up on the season if they started Manziel. That's exactly what they did. The team rolled over.

I was always leery about that "nightmare" article. Didn't seem to make much sense.

Expect more of the same these last two weeks.

I would like to see Manziel play this last game. I don't know if he will or not, but it would be nice to be able to evaluate him one more time before this season is history.

Running QBs...they run until they can't run any longer.

Manziel didn't get hit that hard and he's out the rest of the game with a "hammy".

Manziel, 3 of 8 for 32 yds and 2 rushing attempts for 3yds...and he couldn't return in the 2nd half.

Another game that was very winnable, but our front office won't start the best QB...the QB who gives the Browns the best chance to win.

I'm pretty sure there was more to Manziel being pulled than his hammy.

Everybody talks about his ability to extend plays but what about the ability to execute actual plays - when the play does not break down? Was too much focused on the supposed 'IT' factor we heard about?

Sadly, I think even Manziel sees that he doesn't have what it takes (right now). I think he was happy to get out of the game. JMHO.

What is interesting now that game two is in the books with JM as the starter is that the concerns about his college career and whether or not his game would translate to the NFL have all come to surface.

Could he play from the pocket? Today first series, third down; the pocket was tight good protection, has one on one coverage to the left, he breaks early to the right, turns off half the field and tries to run for a first down, falls short.

Manziel ran a lot in college. Michael Vick ran a 4.25 forty. JM a 4.67. Vick had crazy run skills. Never played a full season. Can you run in the NFL at his size? I don't think so.

Will Manziel put in max effort to learn and improve? That is still a question. A lot has been "written" questioning his work ethic. I don't know what is true. What I know is if he does not put in the time and effort he will fail.

Can he read defenses, stay in the pocket, go through progressions, hit the right guy at the right time? So far he has shown no consistency to do so. His footwork and mechanics have broke down and the results have been clear.

Will he be able to lead a team of men? Not yet. You lead by the example you set in practice and how you execute on game day.

One thing is crystal clear about the NFL everyone has talent. If you do not work to your max effort you will not succeed.

Manziel has a long hill to climb to prove he can play at the professional level.

I sure hope he makes it. The Browns though have to take the approach of: hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

In order to judge talent, you need to witness it. JF couldn't make it two games in a row before an injury.

At this point, I am guessing we are going to need to think about drafting another QB in the early rounds and bring in another vet. The same old story for this team.

And, based on what was seen Sunday, John still sucks no matter how you slice it. John just can't figure it out.....what did he have, 1 good throw? Dude doesn't have it at this point.

My comment had nothing to do with Manziel and everything to do with a media talking head who has a history of false stories for the sake of sensationalism.

And Arch, your obsession with "John" is bordering on the ridiculous. I've found his antics to be insufferable and have wanted him to get his ass kicked some in the hopes he learns his lesson, but even I'm finding what you're doing to be wearing on the soul.

Just sayin'...

It warms Arch's heart that Manziel is failing.

Bull. And on a side note, I find it ironic that YOU say Manziel is failing.

Here's how it is: I want someone to step up at qb. What we were promised and told about JM just ain't there. I think the JM lovers are bitter about that.

Just for reference sake - that's how I've always been referred to. Plus, I don't do the money sign thing.

But, you go ahead and get on my ass. Deflection is always easier, right?

I'll call John "Johnny" when he does something on the field. Fair enough?

Might be waiting awhile for that. After that TD scramble against Buffalo, he's done nothing much, especially with his arm. Can't be a runner in this league, heck he couldn't even stay healthy for back to back games.

Well, yeah, but somehow rish and toad will turn that into you and I not liking John.

Did you mean to quote Dawg Lb? Or did you mean to quote me?

I get NO enjoyment out of John failing miserably. Perhaps like you, I was intrigued by him. Perhaps, unlike you, I am basing my dislike of him on what he's shown on the field this year. It's been sad.

Perhaps, unlike you, I can call a lemon a lemon. Now, if that lemon somehow turns into a turd - I'll call it a lemon turd. If John turns into a semi viable qb, that's what I'll call him. Until John shows something on the field, he's a lemon turd in waiting.

What the hell you talking about?

I get no enjoyment out of seeing Manziel suck.

I'm not mad, but it does seem to me YOU are upset at the fact that John Football has sucked so far. Don't take it out on me, I'm just calling a lemon when I see a lemon.

John still has a game left this season. Lets see what he does.

I'm not angry. Sitting on my couch having a beer watching the game. Pretty calm actually.

I apologize. You don't take joy in Manziel failing. I must have had you confused with someone else.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/12/johnny_manziel_cleveland_brown_5.html

In his 13 plays, he managed just two first downs, one of which came by way of defensive penalty. All told, that's seven first downs in his 12-plus possessions -- and three came courtesy of a yellow flag.

Against the Panthers, Manziel went three-and-out on two of his three full drives, with the lone sustained drive producing a a field goal. The 10-play scoring march featured the 28-yard pass to Hawkins on third down in the face of pressure, and a 15-yard personal foul after Hawkins absorbed a frightening helmet-to-helmet blast. Manziel also ran twice for three yards in the game.

Even Pettine struggled for something positive to say about his struggling rookie.
"I just know as an offense we weren't very productive,'' he said.

En route to his 0-2 record as a starter, Manziel has produced one field goal on 12 drives. He has completed 13-of-26 attempts for 112 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Throw in all the rest of his stats from the season -- including his promising 80-yard TD drive against the Bills when he came off the bench to provide a spark -- and he's completed 18-of-35 attempts for 175 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions for a disturbingly low 41.9 rating.

How is it that Seattle can find Russell Wilson in the third round, and this guy has been mr consistent since DAY ONE, and we continue to screw the pooch on picking QBs.

Think the Browns have had 22 starting QBs since rebirth. What are the odds that not one of them would be a keeper? Maybe the pooch being screwed isn't in the quarterback selection, but rather the bums doing the selecting.

They just do everything right.

They run the ball effectively, they play great defense, they play solid special teams, and they do not beat themselves.

Wilson is a star, no doubt, but he also went into a very good situation. (and the only reason it's not absolutely great, IMHO, is because of his receivers)

1. What nonsense is that? 4 years from now Manziel will lose his asset of mobility??? You do know he will be 25 for most of the season and 26 at the end.

Just throwing it out there that he didn't it two games before he started getting hurt, so yeah, after 4 years his wheels will be done, 25 or not.

Yep.

We haven't seen much from Manziel. But so far? Sorry folks - and I hate to say this because we needed him to be a star, I wanted him to be a star, but he's lookin' like a bust in every way. Even though I was never into picking him in the first place I jumped on the JM bandwagon for awhile too, but the cart lost it wheels and fell apart as soon as he started playing. Heavy is the world.

I would be very surprised if he was still here next season. Honestly? It hurts to say this but I hope he's not.

It was a risky pick by Haslam (yes, I think HE picked him) in the first place. But Haslam is a multimillionaire if not a billionaire and I'm sure it was a fun, exciting pick for him. Thrilling in a way. Most of us will never know what it's like to have that much money and power, and picking Manziel brought a TON of press to the Browns and made our team interesting again... until Manziel played. Then the party was over.

Mariota to the Browns.

Cabot speculates that the Browns would have to trade their two first-round picks and a first-rounder from 2016 to move up — similar to the price the Washington Redskins paid to move from No. 6 to No. 2 to draft Robert Griffin III.

If Manziel doesn’t show enough flashes of the Johnny Football he was at Texas A&M over these next two games, the Browns might even consider trading him and cutting their losses. With Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitting on several occasions earlier this season that he regrets passing on Manziel at No. 16, perhaps he’d still be willing to part with a pick for him. The Browns haven’t made a huge financial investment in Manziel, and wouldn’t be out much from a financial standpoint if he doesn’t work out.

I have been preaching this for two weeks and I do believe it is a done deal if we get the right partner, we may throw in more picks.

Why is it JM gets all the bust talk, but not our #8 overall pick Gilbert ? That guy is turning out to be a total worthless player. Heck,he can't even beat out the 2nd stringers to get on the field!!! Would much rather have spent that pick on someone else.

I have to admit, I was thinking the same thing. Like maybe he was ineffective and the wanted to pull him but didn't want to embarrass him.

Odd given that they pulled hoyer and didn't seem to care about it much.

Don't forget Wilson was on the verge of being benched several games into his rookie year. He continuously played backyard football and didn't particularly look good doing it. It was so bad that I thought he was a prime candidate for a sophomore slump and maybe more beyond that. He only looked comfortable in backyard football mode.

He beat the odds with his drive and brain. Seattle also showed some patience.

The Browns would be smart here to show some patience. But Manziel doesn't get the same leash as Wilson. He has showed neither the drive nor the brains and watching him on the sidelines yesterday seemingly happy he wasn't playing was beyond disappointing. Being a competitor is all he has going for him at the moment and he doesn't seem to have that really either.

On another note, Sherman, while intelligent, is a grade a jerk. But he had an interesting comment in his interview before the game yesterday. When the incredibly unintelligent Bob Costas who appears to prepare for his commentary in 5 minutes asked him about Peterson, Sherman said he didn't deserve to be mentioned with him because he gives up so many TDs. He said that if he played like Peterson, he'd be benched because they have established a level of accountability within the team where that is not acceptable. I enjoyed the comment and in that moment in time wished I were a Seattle fan. Hell, I just might jump ship and join them.

It takes a special kind to be a Browns fan and not everyone has the fortitude needed to endure.

Stop.

There are only a couple of posters who say that sorta thing around here. Don't stoop to their level.

Man, Memphis I was just about to tell you in another thread how much I enjoy reading your posts and how I usually agree with 95% of what you say.

Now I'm at some level because of a tongue in cheek comment.

Thanks buddy.
