Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer sustained a right shoulder injury late in the Week 16 game at Carolina and is considered day-to-day, per CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

His potential absence Sunday in Baltimore, as well as the loss of Johnny Manziel to a hamstring problem, could open the door for undrafted rookie and current practice squad quarterback Connor Shaw to start against the Ravens.

Shaw is set to be activated if the two can't play. Given the monumental struggles of Hoyer and Manziel lately, a strong performance by Shaw could complicate the situation regarding the position heading into the offseason. The Browns have been searching for their franchise quarterback since returning to Cleveland in 1999.

It's funny, cause if shaw somehow whoops on the ravens this Sunday,

We have a whole QB controversy on our hands. Again. But this might be the record, because now it will involve 3 QBs, possibly 4 if we mess around and draft one.

Cleveland browns - we know drama.

I'm wondering if the coaching staff is not being completely honest about Manziel's injury and using this as an excuse to shut down the circus at least for this year.

Let's face it. With the limited game experience we have seen from Manziel, it is evident that he is not ready to play at the NFL level. Hoyer's injury was probably unfortunate collateral damage.

I think they were hoping if the "shut" Manziel down, there would be no controversy for them to start Hoyer. Now, we might have to see Shaw instead.

Wow!!! Being a Browns fan is maddening....

Did he pull a hammy or simply a fast one? Considering how slow he looks running, not sure he could do anything fast. Also since he didn't have an icepack strapped to this thigh yesterday, it was probably a hangnail that was reported incorrectly.

Man...Remember when we were 6-3 and felt like the sky was the limit?

In the blink of an eye we're 7-8 and down to our third-string quarterback.

My hope at this point is that Connor Shaw can show this team enough to be optimistic about him going into next season. I have next to no faith that Manziel will be able to win us games next season, and Hoyer is probably walking.

Go Connor Shaw! You don't have to necessarily win, but for god sakes get us into the endzone two or three times...Get your name in the mix for next year.

well, not everyone is comfortable with Manziel, (actually, hardly anyone seems to be) and few are happy with Hoyer.. So why the heck not try out Shaw....

Maybe the Browns should hold a contest for the fans, and the winner gets to start game 16 at QB for the team. How much worse could it be .....?

At least if we go with Connor Shaw, I won't be involuntarily vomiting in mouth before, during and after the game...

So Manziel has already been ruled out this weekend.

Browns practice squad quarterback Connor Shaw is set to receive significant snaps with the first team in practice this week. The team might also sign another quarterback, per the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

The potential moves announced by Mike Pettine are in response to injuries sustained on Sunday by Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel. The former has not been ruled out for Sunday at Baltimore, but the latter has.

Does the winner or the loser of the contest get to be QB?

Wow that was fast.

Next up, a pink slip.

Well.... The Ravens were just beat by a fourth string Qb who was on the practice squad a week before... We're actually in a better position with a third stringer

They all seem like they try hard, so I'm good with either of the three.

Bring him on, lets see what he's got!

All in all we'll get almost as much tape on Shaw as we have on Manziel, might be interesting to say the least!

What have we got to lose, the game? Meh, wasn't expecting a win anyway as this is a must win for the Ravens. They will be bringing it so we will get a good idea of how Shaw handles the pressure.

I am Shaw ready. Just go ahead and win the dumb job. Beat the stuffing out of 'em.

This is a bit disappointing. I think it was important to see another dosage of Manziel before the season ended.

I don't believe in too many conspiracy theories, but this doesn't smell right.

Rex Grossman turns down Cleveland Browns

The Browns quarterback room has tumbled into the abyss in the buildup to Week 17.

With Brian Hoyer nursing a shoulder injury and rookie Johnny Manziel ruled out with the tweaked hamstring he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Panthers, Cleveland dialed up Rex Grossman about a job.

The journeyman, though, didn't bite.

ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler first reported Monday that the sides couldn't hammer out logistics, especially with Grossman hosting family for the holidays. NFL Media's Jeff Darlington later confirmed that Grossman, 34, has no desire to sign for the one-week league minimum.

To be clear: The Browns have been turned down for candy canes, Yule Log on Channel 11 and a few boozy glasses of eggnog with the in-laws.

Grossman's declined RSVP leaves Cleveland all but certain to start undrafted rookie Connor Shaw on Sunday against the Ravens. Shaw showed moxie in the preseason, but four straight losses have squeezed any sense of hope out of this once-promising Browns campaign.

Didn't Gradkowski start in a final game?

I don't see why all you folks are mocking this potential news. It's quite possible that he's the best QB on the roster. I like his football ability and work ethic much more than Manziel's anyway. Hoyer's mid-season collapse really hurt his cause.

I agree. I would love to see if he passes the "eye test" against a playoff hungry Ravens defense. We already know the road to Johnny Relevant will be a long one.

Wonder if they didn't want him running against the Ravens, who must win - are at home - and will be fired up...that's a tough spot for Johnny, who seems to be not ready to play at this level, especially if he is not 100% and even tougher for Shaw with minimal preparation...unfortunately it spells ugly in all catagories
