I don't know if it's so fraught to be honest. I hope the coaches and CO agree. There is one hinge point on the season that's pretty clear to most of us. When Mack went down we had a cascade effect failure. Not that he alone is the reason but he and a few other key injuries caused us to slide just to the other side of a tipping point. We were pretty decent before the injuries, not great, not VERY good, just pretty decent, above average. Which to us felt like a championship run. As soon as we were on the other side of the watershed everything started cascading. Running game froze up, defenses stacked inside taking away the run and inside receiving routes, run defense fell apart... slippery slope stuff. Look at the injury report now and it's comedy gold. Bottom of the cascade. Shaw is going to get killed. Bless his soul.

I don't see a lot of options for QB this off season that spell dramatic improvement. I think we address our other glaring weaknesses. Quality OL depth, run defense, big physical WR, kicker. And a whole offseason with the same system and returning starters. I'd offer hoyer mid-level starter money. He's proven that with the right system he can be ok. But we shouldn't force a Mariotta/ Winston fiasco.

"All" of us aren't mocking it. It is a bit disturbing that four years running we've started a third-string QB because the season has again ended badly win-loss wise.

But more than a few of us would not mind if we find a Tom Brady-like overlooked draft pick who ends up a Hall of Famer.

It's just not likely, and another 3rd-string-as-starter does show the franchise is still spinning its wheels, despite a slightly better win-loss record.

If this kid ends up our starter for 20 years and multiple Super Bowl rings, fine. smile

Four years running, we've had injuries at QB. Honestly, I'm skeptical of the Manziel injury. I think it was just to save him additional embarrassment on the field that he suffered the 'injury'. Strangely enough, he was 'ruled out' early in the week following the game in which he suffered the 'injury'.

Well, since the team added Tyler Thigpen to the roster for this week, he'll likely be the backup while Hoyer sits out and Connor Shaw starts.

Who's going to teach them, Dowell Loggains? He's done such a wonderful job with our other qb's. This guy needs to go. His resume is qb coach and OC of an underperforming Titans team that cost Mike Munchak his job. He hasn't coached a single qb to success in this league, and you have to put some of the blame for our qb fiasco on him.

Maybe it will be Loggains, I don't know. What I do think is that Shaw is the QB on the roster with the most ability to learn. He's better prepared to succeed in the NFL than either Hoyer (who's had some limited success) or Manziel (who's had no success at all).

We've actually had QBs that can play the position competently. What we've not had is a coaching staff that was up to the job.

I'm not sure where this thought/post should go, but because the thread lists all three current QBs, this is a good a place as any.

I can't believe I am saying this, and it isn't a endorsement of Hoyer, but I think it would be a safe move by approaching Hoyer about a contract extension here in Cleveland.

(1) We aren't going to be in a position to make a move for a QB in the draft. Tampa will go after Mariota, IMO, and Winston isn't worth touching.

(2) Hoyer played himself into a lesser contract than what he probably imagined half way through the season. Desperation by the Browns may add a little more to the deal, but not as much as he would have received after the Bengals game #1.

(3) You simply cannot go into next year assuming Manziel is your starting QB. You just can't.

(4) Yes you'll get average QB play in Hoyer but you'll gain another year of a QB in the Shanahan system (pending an assumed return) and we know he prepares like a pro's pro.

(5) Hopefully with a Mack return, the running game will allow for better PA plays from Hoyer, which he thrived in when the running game was producing.

I just can't subscribe going into the offseason with Manziel, Shaw, and no real shot at a early first round QB. Even if we were able to get a FA Vet, how big of a difference would it be to having Hoyer another year in the same system?

So.....um, yeah.....Hoyer. Rah, rah.

I would agree if Hoyer had been average in the 2nd half if his games .... but he wasn't.

He was awful.

In the last 6 games he played, (including finishing the Panthers game) He went 96-186 for 1312 yards, 2 TD and 9 INT.

That is awful, not average.

Average QB play, with maybe 1 or 2 more TD than INT, and we might be a playoff team.

The problem is that Hoyer is "OK" when he has everything working perfectly around him, but throw a monkey wrench into the works, and he has major struggles. He had several good games to start the season, and then went into bad games right away. I was shocked. I thought that he might be past the league figuring him out. I don't think that it was anything specific that he did that changed though .... he just kind of stopped getting away with things.

I do not believe that Hoyer is at the top of the Browns list of preferred QBs. He earned his shot this year, and then lost it. He is a respected veteran, and he deserved his shot, but he did nothing to keep that job. He was so bad that Pettine put in an absolutely awful Johnny Manziel in his place.

I completely believe that we will try to find a veteran QB to come in to take the reins, maybe while we groom another young QB. I think that one name at the top of their list will be Mark Sanchez. I can't believe I even think about this, because I really don't like him all that well, but he can be effective in a ball control type offense.

Maybe Foles becomes available. He would be a guy who could be interesting.

I think that Cousins (ugh) will also be on the list, if we can get him at a reasonable price.

Glennon could be an interesting guy. I think that he has shown some promise in Tampa Bay, and Lovie Smith seems to have no use for him. The Bucs have the top overall pick. I suspect that they will grab Mariota there, so Glennon could be cut or traded.

EJ Manuel could become available. No thanks.

Maybe Jake Locker? He might be a guy who could run the ball control type offense we want to run.

I think that Hoyer is going to ask for a huge contract, and I do not think that we will bring him back.

I think Hoyer does want to be the starter for starter money somewhere.....so do I and have about the same chance of getting it as Hoyer. People keep bringing up what BH wants without mentioning the reality that no team is going to give him that.

In the end I won't be shocked if he's back on a contract loaded with incintives. If we cut/trade JM then we either draft a mid round guy to develop, sign a dumpster dive like Glennon to compete, or both.

Guys mentioned like Glennon, Cousins or Mallet make me think we are better off sticking with BH (and I think he was aweful the last 5 games). Now if we can get a guy that has athe least had some success like Bradford, Sanchez (uggh), Foles, or RG3 then sure make the switch.

I just don't want change for the sake of change and Cousins, Mallet, Glennon etc sure feels like that.

Of all the guys mentioned, I would look at Bradford, Foles, Mallet and Locker.

I know I don't want Sanchez, RGIII, Cousins, Glennon, Manuel
