Shaw's not really that fast - he ran 4.66 in shorts at The Combine. That's a teeny-tiny bit faster than Manziel ran (4.68). In other words, slower than many DE's, and most/all of the LB's in the NFL.

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/connor-shaw?id=2543649

Here's his Combine evaluation:

Overview

Posted a 27-5 record as a starter. 2013: Finished season with 24 touchdown passes and one interception. Missed spring practice due to left foot surgery. Played in all 13 games with 12 starts. Did not start against Missouri, but did play after spraining both his MCL and LCL in prior game vs. Tennessee. 2012: Started in 11 of 13 games. Missed East Carolina game with right shoulder injury. Missed Clemson game with foot injury. Completed a school-record 67.5 percent of his passes. 2011: Played in 10 games with nine starts. Did not start vs. Vanderbilt. 2010: Graduated high school early to enroll at South Carolina in the spring. Played in nine games.

Analysis

Strengths:
Fine touch and accuracy. Very good mobility and movement in the pocket. Tough and gritty competitor. Produced a rare 24-1 TD-INT ratio as a senior and cut down on mental mistakes that characterized his play earlier in his career. Workaholic, gym rat. Extremely determined. Vocal presence. Smart and instinctive -- is the son of a coach and understands football concepts. Plays through pain. Has a 27-5 career starting record, has rallied his team to victory off the bench and carries a calm, confident, poised field presence. Mentally and physically tough. Three-year starter in the SEC.

Weaknesses:
Is undersized and injury-prone with multiple foot and shoulder injuries. Played in a non-traditional, gimmicky offense featuring many simple reads and has a tendency to birddog his primary target. Operated heavily out of the shotgun and mechanics will require seasoning. Average arm strength -- does not generate velocity on the move and comes up short on the deep ball. Can be too jittery vs. pressure and quick to tuck and run.

Bottom Line:
Lacks prototype measurements and arm talent and played in a high-percentage, dink-and-dunk passing game that has not translated well to the pros, yet possesses the intangibles, toughness, football intelligence and escapability to warrant developing. Is the type of player you root for and has make-it qualities that could eventually surprise. Potentially adds situational value.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't look anything up, I was just going by what I saw of him on the field. He did outrun guys on the field, but you are right, his 40 time is not very good.

Jamies Winston will be a big time NFL QB. Use the 2 #1's to get up to get him.

Winston is a ticking time bomb.

It wouldn't be as dumb as the Manziel pick, as at least there's upside with Winston, but anyone who gave up that much capital for an idiot like that would make me very wary.

I mean...didn't we just do this?

Picking JM is looking like a huge mistake, has the talent but bad attitude. Really needs to grow up and stop acting like an obnoxious teenager. Draft Hundley in 2015. Trade JM if attitude doesn't change for players/draft picks, if they can. Resign Hoyer.

Jimmy Haslam won't commit to Johnny Manziel as QB of future: 'We've got to figure it out'

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...ncart_big-photo

By Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group on December 28, 2014 at 7:01 PM, updated December 28, 2014 at 8:56 PM

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Browns owner Jimmy Haslam admitted Sunday that the Browns might have to find another quarterback to take them to the next level.

With Johnny Manziel banished to the locker room for the Ravens game after he failed to show up Saturday morning for treatment and Browns security had to go looking for him, the Browns can hardly put their faith, hopes and dreams in the hands of their impetuous rookie for 2015.

It was Manziel's Friday night bash that caused Josh Gordon to miss the Saturday walk-through and get suspended for the Ravens game. Now, it appears the Browns aren't sure Manziel is their man.

"Clearly quarterback's an important position in the NFL and we've got to figure it out,'' said Haslam after the Browns' 20-10 season-ending loss to the Ravens. "If you look at the Browns and where they've struggled, they've struggled with the quarterback, so we know that's a position like others that we'll have to address. (GM) Ray (Farmer) and his team will go to work on that tonight and tomorrow.''

Likewise, Mike Pettine finally admitted that the Browns might have to go back to square one at quarterback, with Manziel not living up to his first-round status and Brian Hoyer set to become a free agent.

"I'll probably spend a little bit more time on that tomorrow,'' he said. "I think it's pretty obvious it's still a big question mark."

It was a dramatic departure from last week, when Pettine agreed with Manziel it was too early to give up on the Browns' No. 22 overall pick after only seven quarters and said the media was trying to create something by suggesting the Browns were looking around.

Asked if he's ready to say that Manziel isn't his quarterback of the future, Haslam said, "That's a comment for another day, and it's certainly not a comment I'm going to make. That's a comment for Ray and Mike to make. But I think they've done a good job this year. I think we're a better team. But we understand. Listen, this is a tough division. Think who's in the division -- the Steelers who have won two Super Bowls in the last eight years.''

Haslam indicated that the other teams have their quarterbacks, and the Browns might still be on the hunt.

"The Ravens have been in the playoffs seven out of eight years, and Cincinnati, depending on what happens, could win the division three years in a row,'' he said. "We've got to be able to compete, but if you think we're 2-4, not good enough, but besides the Cincinnati game, we were in every game, and I think we went toe-to-toe with Baltimore twice, beat Pittsburgh badly once, lost another time, beat Cincinnati badly once and really in our only really disappointing game got blown out two weeks ago."

The message from Haslam was clear: The Browns don't have their quarterback yet who can keep pace in the AFC North. Haslam just watched Joe Flacco turn on the jets and complete 8-of-9 in the fourth quarter for 161 yards and two touchdowns for a 158.3 fourth-quarter rating.

The Browns' personnel department has been instructed that everything is on the table for 2015 in terms of the quarterback. That means the Browns will scout top college prospects such as Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota of Oregon and Jameis Winston of Florida State, although Winston is a character concern and the Browns have had enough of that with Manziel.

The Browns have two first-round picks again: the No. 12 overall and No. 19 from Buffalo. They can also try to trade Gordon and possibly Manziel to get more ammunition if they choose to pursue Mariota.

On Sunday, Haslam and Pettine watched undrafted rookie quarterback Connor Shaw come off the practice squad to perform better -- and look faster -- than Manziel in his two starts.

Haslam was also forced to answer more questions about his first-rounder, who admitted just last week that he didn't take his job seriously enough but that it would be unfair for the Browns to give up on him after only seven quarters.

If the Browns can get Manziel turned around in a hurry, they might be able to count on him in 2015. But Haslam sounded a lot like a man who's ready for the staff to search for another quarterback of the future.

Really? It was Manziel's fault that Josh didn't make it to practice on Saturday? Whose fault was it when Josh was late to Friday's practice?

How about his DUI? Whose fault was that? His drug suspensions? Not his fault. Being kicked out of two colleges? Nope, not Josh's fault.

Get outta here, Mary Kay. tsktsk

Yeah Im tired of the Josh Game, we all know of his off field bad decisions but what was worse for me was his obvious attitude on the field during games. It was like he was being inconvenienced for having to be there???

And our offensive flow did not get better on his return...just worse. I wish to have a stud at WR...just don't want Gordon.

To the QB question here.

I can see us making another investment. Frankly I don't care if we expend 1st rounders every year...I don't care as long as we eventually get our guy!

Those who are seeking ways of getting the big 2 Mariota and Winston...forget about it.

Maybe a Bradford?
Two guys I really liked is the kid from USC don't know if he's in this draft - I've always loved Conner kid from Mich. State.
The kid from Penn State who won't come out this year could be somebody in the future.

But JM, HOYER just has not shown the ACCURACY we need JM a little better than HOYER just not ready - will he be next year. Hoyer sorry he's been in the NFL. He an excellent back up QB who can be efficient if you were in a jam. But as a starter - no way he just is not accurate point blank.

WE NEED ACCURATE!!!!! Oh Shaw...sorry love the kid maybe he'll be a good back up? Just not enough arm to start in the NFL.

jmho... Future...in this draft? Who is the #3 or 4 QB in the draft that is who we might have a shot at.

Come on, Mary Kay. JM made Ol' Reliable FlashG miss his work. Made him.

For many of us, this would have us fired soonest. Do NOT give him a pass on this.

Gordon is responsible for his decisions, actions, and should suffer consequences of those. This FO should not be enablers for behavior crippling to this team.

Thanks for handing this nonsense to national markets who will eat it all up.

These three will talk a great bit, and they will avoid responsibility. Their actions betray their promises.

How does that old quote go, might be Lincoln? Fool me once, shame on you . . . notallthere tsktsk

If we think we can not get an improved QB over Hoyer then, why not focus on building a top notch running game and D? Take a page from the Ravens and Dilfer. Have a short ball control O - we saw how good Hoyer did with a quick 3 step drop and release (when he was on smile ). Are there any top linemen and RB's that would be better to go after or even a top WR?

This year's QB class is pretty bad, tab. Should have grabbed Teddy last year. Oh well.

I don't like any of the guys who are ranked 3rd or 4th by most sites. Guys like Hundley, Prescott, Petty, etc all have huge holes in their game.

Heck, I don't like Mariotta. He is a one-read qb who only sees half the field, sometimes a quarter of the field.

Winston has all the tools you would ever want, but we all know about his issues.

A couple of sleepers that I need to watch more of are:

--Garrett Grayson from Col. St. Has a good arm and is fairly accurate. Holds the ball too long for my liking. Probably a 4th rounder.

--Brandon Bridge from S. Alabama. Looks like Kapernick. Tall, fast, huge arm. Very raw though and doesn't make a ton of reads. He has upside and would be worth taking a shot on him in the 4th or 5th.

Bad year for QBs, bro.

I have not posted in about a week prior to this morning.

After all the negative media over the weekend and yesterdays awful offensive showing I have a new opinion.

#1 - Trade Johnny Manziel somewhere for a 5th or 6th round draft pick.

#2 - Re-sign Brian Hoyer, sign someone like Mark Sanchez or Jake Locker to compete with Hoyer, and either draft a 3rd or 4th round QB to groom for a few years, or commit to grooming Connor Shaw.

#3 - Call up St. Louis and offer them a 3rd & 4th round draft pick for Sam Bradford.

#4 - Call up Tampa Bay or Denver and attempt to trade for either Mike Glennon or Brock Osweiler and see if either of them could come in here and win a job next season.

Pick one of these plans and move forward...

Either way.

I have zero confidence about the QB position going into this offseason.

I can't imagine the front office or coaching staff does either.

We've GOT to do something.

Quarterbacks I think that could help this team next season if we upgrade the offensive and defensive lines...(and adding a WR or two).

#1 - Sam Bradford
#2 - Brock Osweiler
#3 - Mike Glennon
#4 - Mark Sanchez
#5 - Brian Hoyer
#6 - Ryan Mallett
#7 - Jake Locker
#8 - Kirk Cousins

After we won 7-games this year, I'm not really interested in trading a bunch of draft picks to move up for Winston or Mariotta, I would rather move forward with a veteran QB whose been in the league for a few years to be honest.

Maybe I'm crazy.

Yeah I don't know jack about this draft class. All I know is we need a super accurate QB, average arm or better - Shaw I would love but his arm strength eliminates most opportunities over 10 yards unless they were between the Hash Marks.

This team is too good with youth to ever be in the position (NUMBER 1 ) to pick a stud QB. We will have to be wise. Continue with JM - He is accurate and has the arm...surprisingly he is disappointing me in his passion to be the best! Talk is Cheap he has to step up in year 2!

Really you wish to be this much of a butt head?

Why accurate and good arm...ummmm cause he is an accurate passer and has a good arm? Why ask a stupid question like that just to start trouble...grow up

Surprised on his lack of wanting to be the best he can be. Maybe cause he always worked hard to be better. Going on his Heisman season to the next. He worked on his own to become a better pocket passer and in the season it showed. that is the BECAUSE.

Now stop playing this juvenile game trying to insult me at every turn. I understand the lack of Football knowledge you possess makes it virtually impossible to have a football discussion with me. But don't play these childish Jr. High games you are playing here. Either talk football as dummied down as it would be - don't worry I would understand. Or don't.

Jamies Winston is the most talented QB in this class. But dealing with his immaturity is not something I'd enjoy. He's the guy of guy that comes in, and if he doesn't start winning right away, bad habits would be developed..

The only QB I'd really consider in this class would be Connar Cook from MSU.. And hey, if we Resign Hoyer.. They'd have something to talk about..

Those are two very valid questions.

"Because he has a good arm and is accurate" is the equivalent of "because I said so". That's your answer to everything, and you accuse me of not talking football?

And, as always- don't dish it out if you can't take it. You're constantly condescending to other posters (usually being wrong, as well), but as soon as you get a taste of your own medicine you whine like a little girl.

If you have an opinion, make a valid case for it. Don't just say 'because I said so, and I know more than you'. That isn't 'talking football'.

I wish New Orleans was higher up the draft order and wanted to start over with a new QB..

I'd gladly take the last few years of Drew Brees..

Why not consider a guy like Matt Schaub. Or has his skills diminished? If Hoyer and Manziel can't co-exist or Hoyer wants to start somewhere else, I see Schaub as a viable option since he's had success with Shanahan as his OC. Maybe shanny can geta Warner-type turn around out of Schaub?

Matt Schaub isn't a bad idea actually but he's played really poorly the last two years he's been in the league. If anything I think Schaub would make a good backup to replace Hoyer. I would still attempt to go after someone like Sam Bradford, Brock Osweiler or Mike Glennon to come in and immediately compete for a starting spot.

I think it all depends on what they want to do going forward..

I don't think Hoyer and Manziel can both be on this team, as if I'm Hoyer, I want nothing to do with him..

If you want to go the "Bridge Gap Vet" route, then no one makes any sense BESIDES Hoyer.. He already knows the system, has timing with the WRs.. Bringing in any other vet just causes more confusion..

I don't think there is a "Manziel is the Starter" option on anyones table in Berea.. They saw what he did, and how he's reacted.. And I honestly think any more crap from him and they might just cut him, and honestly, admitting the mistake would make me respect them more than anything (assuming it was a mistake)

I really don't want another 1st round rookie here right away.. And not just because this draft is iffy on QBs..

There are so many different angles and ways this could turn.. It'll be interesting.. sadly at no point will I assume we'll feel even good about the QB position this offseason..

Really?

Arm Strength...I know you don't see a stat for it.

You can visually see arm strength. He is not in the Rocket Arm category but he is above average NFL QB Arm Strength. Its not cause I say so. Cause I SEE IT its not a secret formula.

Accuracy - cause I see him hit what he's aiming for. This mostly with poor footwork. Once he gets a few things straight like everything it will be better.

These are two things you can see a couple of games in tape and know. Especially the Arm Strength thing. For you to ask that was just you busting my chops. You saying legit?

What I have seen on Accuracy cause that has grey areas. When he has been comfortable in the pocket or on the run he's been accurate - Usually accuracy will follow you from College to the NFL you just need transition. And he's never been a dink and dunk QB to cheat the stats.

when btw will this stop?

I'm not following you around eotab, just seems to be how it's working out, but arm strength can be quantified, they even have a stat for it at the combine. Unfortunately Johnny didn't throw so we can't tell where he ranks. Having said that, I honestly have to ask if you watched his pro day? I certainly didn't see the whole thing but ESPN replayed enough of this passes that I clearly recall thinking that he needed to put his entire body into most of the "zip" and deep throws. I don't think he has a strong arm, I think he can "throw" the ball a bit. There's a huge difference...

Brandon Weeden has a Stronger arm than Peyton Manning..

Which one would you rather be your starter?

I would rather a guy that can anticipate the throw and put it where it can be than a guy that can throw it really fast and hard..

No didn't watch the pro day...just taped almost all of his games and watched.

I saw him have to take off to the left...like Joe T - his Jake Matthews mostly rode out his guy so that JM knew he had that big B gap to escape to. So he took off to his left and around 35 yard down field a WR became open he threw it ON THE Money across his body to his right while going left. More Rope than Lollipop. Things like that is what tells me.

Also I know Bozo's are Bozo's but almost to a man they start off their criticism with - I know he has gun for an arm...I'm like REALLY...the arm is good but not sure about Gun.

Still in the Buffalo game there was a noticeable difference in velocity in his throws and what I had grown accustom seeing from Hoyer who I would describe as an Average arm.

As stated hard to discuss too much with you on Manziel cause you have a pretty closed case on him in your mind. I don't think you would give him credit for picking his nose correctly...lol laugh

Its ok - as far as following. If its discussion about Manziel and I'm posting I'm fair game for you to disagree. I have no crush or hate on any Brown. I ALWAYS...like to see the good and will evaluate with that tint to my posts. If I have a Biased it is usually with all Browns. You have however shown a pretty high biased to your dislike of JM. Not sure you cause I hate when people class me with other posts. But I think its funny when I read criticism on Manziel with people stating. I didn't like him when we drafted him and thought he as this and that then....then talk about him now as if its a fair assessment....lol laugh

I don't go on ESPN ranks...I watched and saw. If it was one game I'd say maybe its not so. But I watched every game I could except for the few Texas Tech games I DVR'd by mistake.

I brought up the BOZO's saying he has a Gun for an arm. Cause I think that is over the top. But if he didn't have a good arm they would be more than BOZO's and we are talking about people like Mooch and stuff.

I will be honest.. I hated Shanahan's scheme for Manziel more than I hated Manziel's play...

I feel like Kyle would run read option with Aaron Rodgers because he's "mobile"

Just run an NFL offense.

He has average NFL arm strength if he has a wide lane to step into.

Without perfect conditions, he'll throw ducks that are ripe for INT's at the NFL level.

What I have seen on Accuracy cause that has grey areas. When he has been comfortable in the pocket or on the run he's been accurate - Usually accuracy will follow you from College to the NFL you just need transition.

He was not accurate in college. He was constantly over, under and threw behind his WR's at A&M. That works in the NCAA, not in the NFL.

The windows shrink, and Manziel has never shown any semblance of a QB who can fit into those windows.

His footwork is also an issue that's not going to go away.

I mean, c'mon, seriously...you were calling the guy the best QB prospect we've had here since '99.

He's actually been the worst, unless we're counting late round fliers. Colt McCoy and Brandon Weeden have a better chance of NFL success than Manziel.

And back to my second legitimate question - why was it surprising to you that he acted like a jackass all year, when he's never done anything but act like a jackass?

If the Broncos were interested in shopping Osweiler...Id be highly interested...he was 21 coming into he league and only played 2 years in college...everyone knew he'd need another year in college or to sit for awhile in the NFL...and he's sat the past several years behind Manning...he is a monster 6'7 248..has a cannon for an arm, good accuracy (not elite) and was a PG heading to ASU...so has a little bit of agility..(probably more like Flacco)...he's looked really good in preseason games...but he may be Denvers man with Peyton aging..

Then again Osweiler has one year left on his rookie deal...

For what we invested in Manziel, we have to give him more than 7 quarters of action to judge him...I mean cmon guys we gave Brandon Weeden 2 years...yes Manziel is an idiot...but our FO drafted him...too early to give up on him (unless say Dallas gives us their late 2nd round pick) ...We cant go in 2015 sorely depending on Manziel, he is a question mark no doubt...need another capable QB

If Hoyer is looking for elite QB money...let him sign else where...might as well sign Ponder, he is the same QB as Hoyer, with alot better mobility...and will be loads cheaper

Trust me I hated that...the playcalling was dreadful, and all the plays were run right under our horrible back-up center...with a caving collapsing Oline every play...

But I wonder, since Manziel admitted he didn't know the playbook...I wonder if Shanahan had to run only plays that Manziel knew...a lot of the plays looked like collegiate plays...I think Shanahan had to dummy down the play calls...And Manziel should have known the playbook, considering he saw for weeks and weeks Hoyer falling flat on his face...That's when I expected Manziel really to be studying and looking to improve his game, knowing his time is coming...

There is not a chance NO gives up on Brees...remember the only other QB they have is Luke McCown...Bress was disappointing this year, compared to his "norm" superstar years...but he's still one of the leagues better QBs...they had Oline issues, a horrible defense that cant pass rush, and gave up some big rushing days...2nd worst defense in the league.

Hey a guy can dream can't he?

I'd rather dream for Brees than actually consider a guy like Cutler..

LOL! I hear that though. Man Drew Brees in a Brown's uniform... excuse me while I wipe the drool that just accumulated on the bottom of my lip off! I'm not sure how I'd react to that, possibly a heart attack.

I blame Charlie Frye.

2006 could of been so much better.

Quite the contrary, there's lots of things I would give him credit for, just not many of them relate to being a good NFL quarterback. LOL

lmao watch we trade for Cutler...you are probably right...cant stand Cutler...truly plays every year like that of a rookie...takes stupid sacks, fumbles often, and forces throws only Brandon Weeden would understand lol

The only QB I really like in this class is Mariotta...but I think its impossible to get him...I like Hundley to a degree, however he is highly flawed too...Would be an ideal round 3 pick...however he'll get overdrafted like most QBs do...FA doesn't look ideal either
