Top DE to stay in school … In something of a surprise, Baylor junior DE Shawn Oakman has decided to return to school for his senior season. The 6-8, 280-pound Oakman had been rated by more than one team as a potential top ten pick based on his freakish size and athleticism, however, it appears that Oakman would like to be a little more productive on the field and push that grade closer to the top 5 next fall.

Watching an impressive guard play tonight. Georgia Tech dominated Miss St on the ground and their RG Shaquille Mason was impressive. Pulling, straight line blocking, getting to the next level and finding linebackers and safeties to destroy. He was taking care of business. Not sure we should spend another high pick on a guard but our line would be scary athletic if we did.

I saw him too. He manhandled anyone put up against him, pulled and almost always took his man to the ground. He was a beast in run blocking.

Anyway, with the 12 and 19, I'm looking mostly at WR and OLB. I want Dante Fowler. I'm not sure if he'll be there at 19, but I would be absolutely fine with him at 12. Strong, physical, good moves, intense...guy is a beast. For me, he's the only OLB I can see that can turn into a beast, the rest are too situational or one note for me.

WR, lots of good ones. Of course I like Cooper, but I feel there is almost no way he makes it to 12. If he does, you run to the podium to take him. I really like Kevin White out of WVU, a very good player. Overachiever, IMO.

Two guys I do not like are Coates and Strong. Too inconsistent, too many drops. They look like monsters out there, but that's not any good unless they catch the ball.

I'll also throw out that I wouldn't be terribly upset if they took D-line or RB with the 19th pick. Some strong players from both positions could be taken there. If you could get a guy like Gordon or Gurley there, or The Texas DL whose name escapes me, I would be all for it.

you had a good run Hank.

The bottom line is the browns have to do a better job of drafting in the first round. Whether it is more scouting, doing better backround checks, getting other opinions outside the organization, whatever. I'm tired of teams picking way below us coming away with better players than we do. It's been going on since we've come back and it has to change if we ever expect to contend on a yearly basis!!

2014, offensive, That's what I was trying to avoid.

let me preface this, Last year at this time, well my first thought and look at cbs sportsline /draftscout com, which is all I have to go by, .. last year! I came up with Kelvin Benjamin and Jace Amaro Wr for Carolina and Te for Jets respectively.

Kelvin had a pretty good year, he produced, may be the teams #1 maybe #2, but not a game changer but solid.
Jace Amaro, A pass catching tE, did well in that role, I like what I've seen, I still wish he'd found a way to the Browns, but I was happy , (really happy with Manziel.

Gilbert? Well I have to leave it to other minds that do their job well, and picked a good piece of the puzzle.

Ok, First look this year.
OT Jeff Fisher, (what a name) Oregon, looks solid, looks like he's a Mitchell Schwartz compliment, a moving OT who can be used on extra Ol / 4 te sets, helps the run helps the pass, helps with depth, ... sets up max protect packages which is what Manziel should be in.

Geesh, Manziel should have 1 option, only 1 until he can handle it, then give him a 2nd and then a 3rd. 1 option every play, .. max protect.

OT Jeff Fisher.
Then
Kevin White Wr, West Virginia, just my favorite of the 3, being Jalean, who I don't like, and the guy from Louisville, and I'm thinking Amari Cooper will be gone, and isn't worth trading up for.

What is Kevin White, he's " not a burner" but I know he is, he's the cross of Taylor Gabriel and Travis Benjamin, with a little more speed and grit. (That's what I hope for anyway.

Rb Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska. I'm still looking for the Browns version of Darren Sproles, or that other guy who played for Philadelphia as a rb and changed so many games over the last decade. Until the Browns find one it will be a need in my mind.
A pass catching Rb, who can change games. Is Ameer Abdullah that? NO, well not yet, we don't know, but he fits the bill of a #1 Rb who can act like a 3rd down back.

Anthony Harris SS, Virginia. Just look at him. Just go look at him, if he doesn't look like the prototypical current Browns Db then I'll be proven wrong. He can be the Cornerback that they have to get every year, and yes he's a SS, who'll play Corner.

Jeff Heuerman TE Ohio State. Sure he hasn't produced much, but think this guy has the logical future growth into a player potential. Hey there's a guy on the Dolphins who didn't do squat for the Buckeyes either. Then he got into the pro's and he turned into a solid NFL'er. Maybe Heuerman can become that for the Browns.

I think the Browns need to carry 4 TE's into next year, .. well need is a strong word, but it would benefit them, and I think that 4th one needs to be a contributer and solid. Nice to make the team better and not avoid keeping the team together at the same time.

Getting a Solid #1 Te isn't going to push anyone off the roster of consequence, and do whatever you can to keep this roster together.

Jeff Fisher Ot Oregon
Kevin White Wr West Virginia
Ameer Abdullah Rb Nebraska
Anthony Harris, Cb/SS Virginia
Jeff Heuerman, Te Ohio State

On the surface looks like a c- draft, but 3 years from now? I want to see them win the Season, not the draft. (Clay Mathews of the pakers, was rated low on draft sites)

I want to see what we pick up in FA..

do we go for Suh.. or Randall Cobb.. Hakeem Nicks.. Jermaine Gresham.. Julius Thomas.. Jason Pierre-Paul

There are many FAs who could help this team.. Haslam seems to be in a WIN NOW mode.. I look for him to go heavy in the Free Agency this year, then build for depth in the draft.

IMHO load the box. get quality D players in FA or draft.
A defense that can avg. only 200 ds a game will win most of them.

Then we can win with 20+ per game of O.

A defense can't avg only 200 yds given up a game, if that teams offense can't move the ball, and is consistently unable to.

As much as I'd like to upgrade our front seven, I'm starting to think maybe taking wideoits at 12 and 19 isn't a terrible idea given the talent pool in this draft.

For example: Devante Parker at 12 and Jaelan Strong at 19... I'm not set on it... probably prefer Parker and Malcom Brown but with basically having to write off Gordon, Austin's injury, I think Benjamin is a free agent, Moore is a special teamer... That leaves Hawkins, whose play level dropped off towards the end of the season, Gabriel, and the glorified practice squad big guy as what we have at the position. We still need to add two contributors.

I'd rather bring in a guy like Maclin or Cecil Shorts (why not both)

Shanahan has said he doesn't put a premium on #1 WRs.. Just get guys that can run good routes and catch the ball..

I'd want to solidify the D-line to stop the run, get a pass rusher and a big WR. Those are my top priorities. Then I want help on the online, a big back, and maybe I take a flyer on Bryce Petty.

Round 1 Pick 12: Shane Ray, DE, Missouri
Round 1 Pick 19: Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
Round 2 Pick 11: Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Oklahoma
Round 3 Pick 13: Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor
Round 4 Pick 12: Jarvis Harrison, OG, Texas A&M
Round 4 Pick 16: Andy Gallik, C, Boston College
Round 5 Pick 11: Deshazor Everett, CB, Texas A&M
Round 6 Pick 13: Wes Saxton, TE, South Alabama
Round 6 Pick 22: Karlos Williams, RB, Florida State
Round 7 Pick 12: Brandon Ivory, DT, Alabama

He may not come out anyway. I do understand your reluctance, especially given the experience with Gordon. The situation does seem similar, however you have to evaluate each situation separately. I take the chance based on talent, assuming that it's clear he's leaving the off the field issues behind him. If he is, he could be the steal of the draft. And not to nit pick, but he wasn't arrested for pushing a woman, only accused.

With the whole Ray Rice and Adrian Petersen cases, there will be no tolerance for anything that smells of violence - especially against women...any suspect character will be immediately amplified, rightly or wrongly and I imagine will push players down on the draft chart...

Police wanted to charge him. The girl refused to talk.

Whatever happened, thanks, but no thanks.

He's a hell of a talent.

But at the moment I don't really trust our organization to identify or work with these types of players.

If we become a more stable organization, I'd consider guys like that. But right now Berea is a zoo.

But how many steps? Was it like 8 steps or was it a lot of em?

Was it a true push or was it a nudge?

Was it med MJ and he forgot what state he was in?

Let's not jump to any conclusions.

I'm not really concerned with what happened.

It's possible that on all three occasions, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But our organization is a dumpster fire without stability. There's a reason teams like NE can get Randy Moss and put up Madden stats, and a reason why he just jogged fly patterns in Oakland.

I don't see any signs of stability to make me feel comfortable with taking these kinds of guys. If we were Green Bay, I'd say draft the guy. He's one of the best WR prospects I've ever seen.

But there's just too much smoke around him. And I don't trust our team to make character evaluations, or handle problem players. We have a long history of failure in that regard since 1999.

j/c:

A few people I'd like to keep an eye on as the months unfold---particularly because of position needs (IMO) and where we are slotted with our first three picks.

Amari Cooper, Jalen Strong, Devante Parker, Kevin White. (WR) I tend to think WRs begin to fall slightly (at least related to all those mock drafts out there) so one might be able to be had in Rd. 2.

Danny Shelton, Malcom Brown, Eddie Goldman (DT). I actually see Brown more as a 34DE than a NT like the other two mentioned. Goldman seems like a wildcard that bloomed late in his collegiate career.

Dante Folwler, Shawn Oakman, Vic Beasley, Shane Rey, Shaq Thompson (DE/OLB)

These clearly align with some of the more popular/recognizable names from college this year, but it's my starting point.

One more thing.....

Dane Brugler, a CBS draft analyst and someone's opinion I really enjoy, doesn't have Shawn Oakman in his first round at all.

Is this consensus on Oakman that he has all the physical tools but is just too raw at this point in time? If that is the case, a combine might really elevate his status....rightly or wrongly.

As of right now, this draft class does not excite me. It's not as bad as the class in which Mingo came out, but it is way below the draft class of last year and the one where we got TRich and Weeden.

I think there are few people people in this draft that excite me outside of a few receivers a couple guards and a pass rusher or two. I think it will be better than the mingo draft just because I do feel these receivers are that damn good.

No QBs i would draft in the first,
NO RBs I would take in the first
No corners worth a damn outside of Trae Waynes of Michigan

DT class sucks
OT class sucks
No safeties that excite me

Outside of Coop, Parker, White, Dupree, strong and williams, I really just dont like this class at all.

I agree, but Browns are not desperate for starters. They need depth. Maybe a top LOT is better suited playing Guard early in career.

For Malcom Browns, Texas, fans, I watched his last bowl game. He plays the pass well get swallowed up on run plays. Missouri's Lucas Vincent might be a better option. Missouri is producing DL talent these last several years.
