49ers ask for permission to talk to Kyle Shanahan
Posted by Darin Gantt on January 2, 2015, 5:48 PM ESTAP

The 49ers aren’t limiting themselves to offensive coaches or defensive coaches, and they’re balancing experienced candidates and newcomers. They’re even considering members of the same family.

According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers have asked the Browns for permission to talk to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Of course, they’ve previously talked to Kyle’s dad Mike about the same job, which could make for an interesting family dinner.

Shanahan the younger was praised for his good work in Washington with a young Robert Griffin III, but he wasn’t able to replicate that in Cleveland with Johnny Manziel.

Don't know how I feel about that. Manziel has no hope at all if we switch OC. He hasn't even learned this offense yet much less learn a whole new one. If I am the Browns I refuse.

You don't throw good money at bad. No personnel decision should be made with Manziel in mind. He should be viewed as a foolish gamble you attempt to recoup as best you can, not as a catalyst for your future.

And, no, you don't refuse...that's how you get no one to work for you, ever, real fast.

As for Shanahan...he showed promise early and predictability late. There was a lot to like, and a lot to dislike.

He'll be a head coach this coming year. There are too many openings, and he did too good a job in Buffalo. He could even head back to college if he wanted to. I don't see him being an assistant this year.

YTown is correct. Marrone is a HC candidate (rumors to the Jets) only; he's going nowhere as a co-ordinator. KS as a HC? I'm not so sure that he's ready yet...

So, which jobs are open? And my guesses

Buffalo
NY Jets - Doug Marrone
Oakland
Chicago
Atlanta - Rex Ryan
San Francisco - Dan Quinn

Interesting to note that the Raiders have requested permission to speak to Pat Shurmur and Eric Mangini about their HC position...

Why would they want to hire the OC from a team that was ranked 23rd in offensive yards and 27th in points scored? For the wonderful job he did with Robert Griffin and Johnny Manziel? Whatever, if they hire him, maybe the Browns should check out Marc Trestman, or the Bills OC, assuming he won't be retained by their new HC.

I can't say I am surprised that the majority of the board doesn't think all that highly of Shanny. I remember when Bruce Arians "had no business being an OC" and "would never be a OC anywhere else in the NFL." laugh

I think Shanny drew up innovative and effective plays. His route trees were a thing of beauty. His play design is some of the best I have ever seen. His playcalling was also good. He mixed things up well and was not predictable.

I get the sense that a lot of people can't distinguish between good/bad playcalling and good/bad execution. You can give my mother the keys to a race car and she is still going to drive 20 mph. This team needs more talent and not another OC.

I was afraid of us losing Shanny to SF. That place seems like a perfect fit for him. It is interesting to note that his dad has interviewed for the same job. I wonder if they will be reunited in SF? Would Shanny be able to leave to Cleveland to be the OC in SF under his dad, provided they also gave him the Assistant Head Coach title?

I really, really don't want to lose this guy.

I think the better metaphor would that if you gave the keys of a Prius to Kyle Bush he still wouldn't win the race.

I like Shanny and have said so many times. He made the chicken salad from chicken poop,it just didn't last.
With the new limited practice rules in the NFL,if a position group is failing look at the position coach, not the guy above him.
It always easier to blame coaches, than to admit that minus the oline, this team had zero talent on O.Credit should go to Shanny for being able to get anything accomplished.

Good for Shananhan. He won't get the job, so there isn't much to worry about. He's not ready for a HC position, but I'm sure glad he's part of the Browns staff.

Actually, the NFL put an end to that. All assistant coach positions are lateral moves now.

Although I wouldn't fully write him off for a HC position, I would say his chances are slim BUT you need to factor in two things. A. How many teams now need head coaches and B. Whats the crop/selection they have to choose from.

When I hear the words "Head coaching candidates" and Rex Ryan, I think... wow that's what is considered the best/top choice for a team head coach hunting?

Kyle is perfectly good where he is at now, going into his second year with a team that just installed his scheme and etc. Early towards the season, the offense of ours completely overachieved in my eyes. I don't think anyone would have guessed that we'd be running the rock at-will, passing at-will and compiling big plays of 20 yards or more. I think we were top 5 in big plays for awhile there (mainly due to the run game setting up play action) and in addition to all that, with a WR group that everyone, including myself, heavily doubted. I hope nobody takes Kyle from us in any fashion.

They're talking to everybody. Chances are Kyle isn't the guy they want or the guy they'll hire.

Maybe for continuity's sake, and maybe because the offensive failures were more a function of execution than design. Most of my problems with Shanahan begin and end with changing the offense for Manziel in what was "the game" of our season. Part of that falls on Pettine for making the switch (or whomever dictated making the switch), part of it falls on Manziel for not knowing the offense enough after 14 weeks to execute it, and part falls on Shanahan for not doing a better job adapting.

from what i gather he had to really dumb it down for JM in that game. he had to change the play calling for a reason. and it seems very clear to me as to why.

Absolutely...For JM's first start, they would have had to severely limit the playbook. I constantly here that it takes quite a few games, if not year(s), to learn an entire playbook. This would seem to lend why QB's like Manning, Brady, Rodgers, etc perform so consistently YoY.

Seems like the question about Shanny is pretty much scheme vs. execution. If the execution is the issue, the he is good. If the scheme is bad, then he goes. From what I saw on gamely chats, most of the board seemed to blame execution and now it seems to be shifting to scheme. Which is it?

To be able to see a defense formation and have 20 audible options vs. just having a single hot-read would seem to be a huge advantage to the Offense. Dang, it seems like didn't even go through WR progressions once Josh got back on the field.

It seems like most on the board want to change OC and go get another QB...If we do that then next year we will be .500 or so and be having another finger pointing and blaming HC/OC/QB.

I don't know this and maybe somebody does, but is there a case where a new OC and QB were brought into a team (in the NFL) and made the playoffs first year and continued with winning seasons for a few years? The only reason I ask is to see if we have even understand the likelihood of success in what we are asking? We sure have constant history on our team of it not working...

I worry most about Kyle Shanahan being named "assistant head coach" somewhere, possibly with his father being the HC.

Kyle Shanahan is a good young OC and I hope he remains with the Browns.

This season was a challenge offensively for many reasons. First off it was a new scheme installed on a young team for the first time. Joe Thomas and Mack were the veterans leaders and that was just about it. Losing Mack hurt in many ways and the stats back that up.

Quarterback play was inconsistent and that was expected.

The run game and blocking scheme was new as were the runners. Again inconsistent.

The receivers inexperienced, small with little depth. Gordon, well most of you know the story there.

You have to solve the quarterback position. Hard to look good offensively without solid play from that position.

Kyle will do very well given some time and talent to work with.

Is just one year of consistency too much to ask? Shanahan should stay and work, along with Manziel, to improve.

I think that he is a very creative guy, who like most, needs some degree of talent to succeed. I feel like he got the most possible out of our receiving corps, and had the offense clicking on all cylinders until Mack got hurt. I would hate to lose him.

The only way we let him loose is if he becomes a head coach. It may even be a better career move for him if he stays away from his dad and earns his stripes on his own.

good for Kyle to get the interview, but I think he's at least a year from actually getting one of these jobs.

I so want Rex to go to Oakland. Seems like destiny (and I also believe Rex is a good coach).

Depends on where you lie in offensive philosophy. Personally I think he sucks. I don't think his playcalling is all that great, but his plays do have intrigue to them (Don't read this as a glowing review of his plays, but some of them have promise) so there's hype there. Not exactly warranted or unwarranted, but a mixture of both imo.

To insure consistency, the Browns need to either make sure that someone on the coaching staff "besides the OC", knows the offense...OR, protect your OC by making him the "assistant HC" with a nice pay raise.

There is one more way to insure coaching consistency on offense..the HC learns the playbook, similar to what Belichick did at NE. I believe that Pettine can be that kind of HC, capable of learning both sides of the ball, thus insuring scheme consistency on both sides of the ball.

If the Browns retain Shanahan as our OC, at the very least, they need to put an understudy with him, learning his system.

The truth is, Kyle Shanahan is still honing his offensive skills (system, playbook) as an OC, not really ready to become a HC...unless someone like his dad names him assistant HC, but Kyle would more than likely still running the offense.

I don't believe that Shanny's system is at a point in development where we need to have a protege for him. Mainly because there's no evidence that his system has ever worked. Secondly, when it comes to the read offense, it's not that advanced. His zone read offense philosophy is growing slowly. I'd give him another 3-7 years before he figures out what truly works.

Every NFL team is aware that their OC might leave for a HC job. I think that it is ridiculous if any team did not have a protege for their OC as a contingency plan for when that happens.
