I like the hire. The above statement reveals a lot about Pettine's opinion of Shanny without stating it in so many words, IMO. I do believe DeFilippo is a much better fit for the type of complimentary leadership team Pettine and Farmer are trying to build.

That did seem like a backhand to Shanny.

Obviuosly, Shanny is more experienced and has been successful as an OC compared to DeFlip.

But if he doesn't want to be here and doesn't fit the vision and the culture the GM and the HC are trying to build, why keep him?

Exactly. Especially in light of the recent statement by Pettine stating Shanahan had his eye on another job from day one. And I somehow just can't let go of that Redskins story about him being an entitled whiner. I liked about eight or nine games of his play calling, beyond that? Meh... Sayonara, Shanny and welcome aboard, Flip.

It doesn't really fit anyone's narrative. We don't have any idea opportunities at a higher level were Junior college, Division 3 or what they were.

What we do know is they are looking at a guy who would be going from a high school coaching position to the NFL with no other experience.

People can try to spin that any way they wish but it is what it is.

True, but the implication from Versatile Dawg is that the Browns are hiring a guy that just sloughs off at high school, when the truth is that he's been asked about taking jobs elsewhere but refused for whatever reasons he had.

The plain truth of it is that he was thought of highly enough to be asked to move up the ranks.

Sorry if somebody already posted this story. I quickly looked, but didn't see it:

'It can't bode well for Johnny Manziel that his new OC didn't feel compelled to study his film before taking the job: Mary Kay Cabot'

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2015/01/it_cant_bode_well_for_johnny_m.html

By Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group on January 23, 2015 at 8:14 PM, updated January 24, 2015 at 3:38 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It can't bode well for Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel that his new offensive coordinator, John DeFilippo, didn't study Manziel's film before taking the job.

It's highly unusual for a candidate not to dig into the film of the potential starting quarterback before accepting a position, one NFL coordinator told Northeast Media Group.

And it's not like DeFilippo didn't do his due diligence before becoming the Browns' sixth coordinator in six years on Wednesday. He acknowledged at one point in his interview that "I've done my research on this team.''

Yet, he didn't study the No. 22 overall pick from last season, who was drafted to be the Browns quarterback of the future. The guy who could potentially make or break him as a first time coordinator.

When DeFilippo was asked during his introductory press conference if he had studied Manziel, he said, "I'll be honest with you. I'm going to be flat-out honest with you because it's the only way I know how to be. I have not. I've not watched the games from last year with Johnny. Obviously, I studied Johnny coming out of college and spent some time with Johnny.

"I wouldn't say it was a lot of time, but I spent some time with Johnny. He flew out to Oakland and spent a day with him. Can you get an overview on a guy in one day? No, but you can get a grasp of what he thinks and how he's feeling and those things. I got along with Johnny when we met with him, but I can't tell you that I've watched the games yet. No, I have not.''

Considering it would've taken him about an hour to study Manziel's seven quarters of film, I find it extremely telling that he didn't. DeFilippo interviewed for the job five days before he accepted it, which means he had plenty of time to break down every single one of Manziel's plays. With nine three-and-outs in his 12 drives as a starter, there weren't very many reps to dissect -- about 54 in all. What's more, only half of those were passes, so it would've been an extremely quick study.

Besides, DeFilippo was able to precisely assess other players on the roster when asked which Browns he'd be excited to coach.

"Well, Josh Gordon is as talented of a guy that you get in terms of when you watch him run routes, from a physical stature,'' said DeFilippo. "Obviously he's a fantastic athlete. Joe Thomas is a fantastic athlete. Alex Mack is an unbelievable center, so those are the guys when you look at the Browns' roster, you're like, 'Wow, those guys are Pro Bowl-type players.'"

In addition to not studying Manziel's film, the very first answer out of DeFilippo's mouth after his brief opening statement was "we're not sure if our starting quarterback is in the building right now or not. If he is that's great. If he's not, that's great too.''

Those statements, coupled with remarks made later Thursday night by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, would seem to suggest that the Browns aren't counting on Manziel to be the guy in 2015. In fact, they might even be nearing the end of their rope with their resident party boy.

"You can look at the teams whether they're in the final eight, the final four or the final two, you've got to have a really good quarterback and our situation as Coach (Mike) Pettine says is still muddy and we don't know who our quarterback is going to be next year and what I would say to our fans is, we're going to continue to work really hard to find that quarterback who can make us a championship team,'' Haslam said at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.

Haslam went on to say he's not slighting the current crop of quarterbacks, but "we're going to work hard til we get a quarterback who can help us win and win consistently, which we've stated since day one is our goal. And it's not easy, but we understand it's the mission and we're going to work hard at it.''

Not long after Haslam's remarks, he spent about 10 minutes chatting in the media room at the Sports Awards with Ohio State national-championship winning quarterback Cardale Jones, whom Haslam -- a big man himself -- had to look up to. Haslam seemed clearly impressed with Jones (6-5, 250) and genuinely interested in him during their conversation.

Haslam also had no problem with all the cameras clicking away to capture the encounter. It was the perfect way to send yet another message to Manziel that he better get his act together and fast.

Like general manager Ray Farmer before him, Haslam stressed that the Browns are open to drafting a quarterback in the first round for the second straight season. They own the No. 12 and No. 19 picks and could try to move up to take a premier prospect if they're sold on one.

Haslam also reiterated that Manziel has to mature off the field for the Browns to even consider him as their starter, and so far, the second-year pro hasn't changed a thing. He bolted for South Beach the minute school was out, and he's hanging out in Aspen with Josh Gordon, who's also on thin ice with the team. The sight of them together can't be pleasing to Haslam, who's grown weary of the negative publicity generated by the two.

On Friday, ESPN.com ran a story quoting an anonymous teammate calling Manziel a "100 percent joke.''

Between DeFilippo apparently not feeling the need to be all in on Manziel before coming on board and Haslam emphasizing that the search is on for a championship-caliber quarterback, Manziel might be grateful he's only renting at The 9 and not heavily invested in real estate here.

it doesn't bother me a bit that he didn't study JM's 7 quarters of play. i'm sure he studied a ton of his college film during the draft process.

In addition to not studying Manziel's film, the very first answer out of DeFilippo's mouth after his brief opening statement was "we're not sure if our starting quarterback is in the building right now or not.

that is the same exact thing almost word for word that has been said by pettine, farmer and haslam. it would be rather stupid for flip to say anything else.

It can't bode well for Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel that his new offensive coordinator, John DeFilippo, didn't study Manziel's film before taking the job.

Stopped right there (I'll read the rest) how does that possibly mean anything towards Manziel. Look the kid has to change and work hard - I think we all know that by now.

But all that means is that Flip didn't put the Manziel or QB position as his primary or even secondary reason to come here and COACH. Actually all that does is affirm that coaching with PETTINE is what he considers his OC Dream Job!

I know some don't like the term but man just pure Bozoism.
Ok so I read the rest. He freaking visited JM for a day...that is more important then watching film. I'm sure as a QB coach and now OC his thoughts are - that little data film doesn't matter. He's going to break JM down and then mold him in what would best suit JM to become a starter in our O.

For me what was more telling was he watched tape of our O. Cause he mentioned big pluses were Gordon, Thomas and Mack all pro bowlers last year. Wait there was one more Pro Bowler not mentioned. Cameron

To me that actually meant something. Unless Cameron can't get what he wants else where and comes back for a ONE Year contract (re do of 2014). We won't see him. Of course its trying to read between the lines. But to me that said a lot more than not watching the 7 quarters of tape...He freaking met with JM for a DAY!!! lol laugh

Look, I let it go the first time you brought this up. I let it go again when someone parlayed off of your assinine comments, but I won't let it go again.

I addressed 32's comments about "higher levels" and what that could possibly mean. Go back to your dartboard analysis of evaluating draft picks. You're good at that. notallthere

Manziel comes out of the coaching change with a clean slate, which is better than he could have, if Shanahan returned as OC.

All of the talk and comments in the media and from the media, appear to add up to Manziel having a clean slate, from this point forward.

For Manziel, he could not have asked for a better 2nd chance to make a first impression. It looks like Manziel is going to get a "do over".

DeFilippo is not going to hold Manziel's 2014 performance against him. Manziel has to be the luckiest dude in the world, getting a second chance, with the slate wiped clean.

The Browns front office (Haslam and Farmer) will control the level of competition that Johnny will have to face in training camp.

Manziel could not ask for a better "second chance" opportunity.

The Browns will have a QB competition. No one is confident that JFF will succeed based on the off the field stuff, well the on the field stuff as well.

The only questions are who and how much effort/money the Browns are willing to commit to another QB.

My guess is a bunch.

JFF should use this opportunity to get his act together, as this is the first time where the party boy and player have been in conflict. Time to figure out if he is boom or bust.

One would hope that by controlling it, that means they will bring in the best option possible to compete.

However, who else decides who to bring in other than the GM and or owner?

Aren't they the ones who make such decisions? Especially your GM. Even if Haslam isn't involved, your GM makes the personnel decisions in the draft and who you sign in the FA market. He has total control of the talent brought in.

Yeah you definitely got a point regarding the GM and his staff pretty much bring in everyone. Glad you started distancing the Owner bit.

Accept for one thing. So far it seems to have been Farmer working hand in hand with Pettine not Haslam.

Especially this year now that the program is in place he can spend just a tad more time with Farmer regarding personnel. But it appears so far he has gotten Pettine everything he has asked for.

Dansby, Whittner, I believe Gilbert was more a Pettine pick than Farmer. It think he has had many a talk with Pettine (not Haslam) on his picture of the players he wants.

I don't see this Farmer & Haslam vs. the Coaching staff. If that is the case - blow this thing up once again cause its got to be FARMER & PETTINE working together!

" I've not watched the games from last year with Johnny."

I don't think he said he didn't look at the film of Johnny, he said he didn't study it. He may have a different definition of study the film than we do. To him studying the film may mean sitting down with the player and breaking down the play call and what the player saw, what the player was thinking and why he did what he did on the play.

you know reading it that way makes me feel bad about what i said. reading it that way puts it in a positive light instead of the negative light i ASSumed he meant.
if that's the true intent of the meaning it's a win win for everybody. maybe we won't see our franchise guy but at least we are trying.

I can't say for sure what he meant. I just know it would look bad on everyone from the GM on down if they were to put all their eggs in the JFF basket and fail. From my perspective, I wouldn't see anything that would suggest it would benefit anyone for our team to do poorly at the QB position next year.

If that happens, I believe we could blame that on a failure to address the position properly rather than considering the possibility it were somehow done on purpose.

The Browns have very little confidence in JM at the moment and will not risk the season on him. If he doesn't show serious improvement from a physical as well as mental standpoint, he will not be QB of this team next year.

They almost have to be proactive about this. They can't wait until July to find out. Not sure what the answer is..

Thats just half - how do you know this I think was implied to JM not be a QB on the team meaning we will cut him.

JM if he buckles down works hard learns the playbook - he happens to be very coachable. He will get the opportunity to knock off whoever was brought in to Start (bridge QB). Will I hold my breath till that happens - No.

But it is a possibility. We will find out if JM really wants to be a football player or not.

Just curious, what leads you to believe Manziel is very coachable?

From all accounts, he put in minimal effort during practice and film study while at A&M.

He often neglected to perform to the script when acting as the scout QB for the Browns and chose to freelance on his own. Didn't bother to put in the work demanded of him to learn the playbook this past season. Manziel consistently showed up late to meetings.

I don't see a guy that's proven to be very coachable. I see a guy who says to the camera what everyone wants to hear, but does what Johnny wants to do when it comes to action.

So far, he's only proven that he wants the lifestyle afforded a high profile football player. He's a limelight seeker, a media whore. Basically, he's Paris Hilton with a football.

If he was even half the man with only half the work ethic that Joe Thomas has, there wouldn't even be a discussion.

Agree 100%. I fear that when reality sets in for the kid, it'll be a bit too late and no one will know how good he could be on the field as opposed to how bad he is off the field.

Same with Josh. By the time they grow up, it potentially could just be too little, too late and the opportunities they have today won't be available. JMO

Ok I see some clarification is needed.

When I say Coachable - I'm not talking about his attitude I'm more talking about his aptitude to learn when he does set his mind to it.

I say this from my take on his finishing the Heisman year and determining that he has to get better in the pocket. Had a private trainer and then seemed night and day as in played that 2nd season.

I wasn't say he was going to do this. Who knows what the kid decides to do. For all I know he is Scared to play in the NFL and just want to claim the fame and then get out.

What I have summarized with his Intelligence in general and with his football knowledge capabilities. If he decides he wants to be the best that he can be. I believe he would be conceived as very Coachable. Right now he's just floating by - like he did in HS and college probably.

But my statement was more so for APTITUDE not Attitude.

Actually, he is just a little over "Half" the man that Thomas is rofl

As far as the work ethic,, he's not close.

Browns interview Falcons assistant Glenn Thomas for QB coach, according to report
By Nate Ulrich Published: January 27, 2015

The Browns recently interviewed Glenn Thomas for their quarterbacks coach vacancy, ESPN reported Tuesday.

Thomas, 37, has been a member of the Atlanta Falcons' coaching staff for seven seasons. He was their quarterbacks coach the past three years and an offensive assistant the previous four.

Thomas coached at Midwestern State University from 2001-07 and found time to work with the Baltimore Ravens between seasons. Thomas worked with the Ravens' wide receivers and helped coach their quarterbacks (2002-03 and 2005).

Browns coach Mike Pettine worked for the Ravens from 2002-08, so he knows Thomas.

At Midwestern State, Thomas coached wide receivers as a graduate assistant (2001-04). He later served as the program's offensive coordinator (2005-07).

After he graduated from Texas Tech, Thomas began his coaching career as a student assistant at his alma mater (1998-2001).

The Browns are looking for a quarterbacks coach after firing Dowell Loggains and accepting the resignation of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan three weeks ago. Last week, they hired John DeFilippo to replace Shanahan.

The organization also has reportedly interviewed former NFL quarterback Steve Walsh and former Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach Todd Downing for Loggains' old job. The Oakland Raiders, though, hired Downing to fill the same position.

Reports: Joker Phillips to be Browns wide receivers coach

There are plenty of reports that former Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips is about to be hired as wide receivers coach by the Cleveland Browns.

That would make sense considering that the Browns new offensive coordinator, John DeFilippo, is the son of Gene DeFilippo, who was associate AD at Kentucky when Phillips was a player for Jerry Claiborne and an assistant under Bill Curry.

Phillips was last wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida before resigning prior to the 2014 season reportedly because of possible NCAA violations. Phillips was out of football this past season, though he did help Northern Illinois head Rod Carey. Phillips and Carey previously worked together at Minnesota.

Phillips was an assistant at Kentucky, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Notre Dame and South Carolina before returning to UK as part of Rich Brooks’ staff in 2003. Phillips was later elevated to offensive coordinator and then to head coach in waiting.

Phillips took over as head coach in 2010, leading UK to a 6-7 record after a loss to Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl. After a 5-7 record in 2011 and a 2-10 mark in 2012, Phillips was fired as head coach.

A Kentucky native, the 51-year-old Phillips starred at Franklin-Simpson before coming to UK. He was part of the 1983 and 1984 bowl teams under Claiborne. LINKY-Dinky-Doo

We are replacing our coaching staff w/less capable guys, but hey, they are all "we guys" and we will be great on offense next year.

Phillips has a much more impressive resume than Shanahan's crony.

I really like what our former WR coach did with the WRs last year. I think that he did a great job. The new coach has some pretty huge shoes to fill.

I also like what McDaniel did with our wide receivers. I am just saying that based off of their resumes alone, which is what one poster is doing, McDaniel doesn't hold a candle to Joker Phillips.

Phillips does have a deep resume. I just hope that e can continue the development of the guys who are here, and develop new guys we bring in.

j/c:

Gotta love (or hate, actually) posters who complained in 2013 we weren't being fair to the coaching hires under Banner and they weren't given enough time yet are already claiming failure of recently hired coaches of one week ago and even one RUMORED to be on our radar.

What a joke.

That's a completely subjective analysis, at best.

Besides the obvious gross misstating of "capable", we've tried guys with resume's and track records, and it hasn't translated to anything significantly better than what we've seen in most any other year... so what's the point?

Hell, in the 2007, our O was on fire with a relatively unknown OC named "Chud". We brought that same guy back to be the HC and our O sucked.

The difference was player execution and ability.... mostly at the QB position. Anderson vs Weeden was the difference.

And, unless we're running the ball every single snap, who we have at OC won't matter a lick unless & until we fix the QB spot permanently. OC's get made by players that can execute, not the other way around.

Kevin O'Connel coming in to interview for QB coach. Browns interviewing Steve Walsh as well.

This is Pettine's coaching staff...made up largely of individuals who are like minded and driven.

Pettine appears to have a link to each coach having worked with them previously with the Jets, I believe.

What I see happening is Pettine assembling a coaching staff of "his choosing". Some seem to forget, Pettine was a all-state QB in HS so it's not like he is unqualified to vet offensive coaches as well as defensive coaches.

I'm not about to pre-judge Pettine's choices or start the "woe is me" routine. I'll wait to watch them on the field understanding there will be a learning curve!
