Vers, I believe that we're not even considering the wild card (and probably that's the way the FO should approach it) with LeCharles Bentley. I saw a post on the OBR that stated a player agent said Bentley has been working out, his knee is healing and he personally expects him to be back for the team mini camp. If that turns out to be credible then we're set. LT Joe Thomas, LG Eric Steinbach, OC Hank Fraley, RG LeCharles Bentley, RT Shaffer/Tucker. If LeCharles is even 90% of his former self then that is still a pretty fierce line we're looking at.

Why? Joseph has been a huge dissapointment with that team. If they could get Cofield that would make a lot more sense.

Tough question and one I really don't know the answer for. I can speculate though.
I think Tucker is a better RT than Shaffer, but I also think he has more ability to play RG effectively, so I would probably start w/Tuck at RG and Shaffer at RT. Of course, that could change during camp, but that would be how I'd start things off.

That would be a miracle recovery, but I hope you are right.

I'm pretty sure he is, I saw the post as well, and it came from a reliable poster over there. He said he would be ready for minicamp in June.
you had a good run Hank.

Maybe he´s a better 3-4 DE than 4-3 DT, who knows.....
that´s his prospect profile from 2003:
William Joseph Position: Defensive Tackle William Joseph College: Miami (Fla.) Height: 6-5 Weight: 308 Hometown: Miami, Fla.
Career Notes | Agility | High School | Personal | Stats ANALYSIS Positives: Very agile and powerful lineman who shows impressive aggression flashing into the backfield, using strong hand swipes to get a good push off blockers … Has very good explosion heading upfield, showing no hesitation to the play … Uses his raw power to toss blockers aside with consistency … Displays the proper hand technique to dominate, shed and keep blockers off his feet … Has developed an array of spin moves and has learned how to stay low coming out of his charge, making him much more effective on shooting the gaps … His fluid change-of-direction agility allows him to move down the line instantly … Explodes into ball carriers when tackling … Has the short-area quickness to chase down the plays … Very effective when sliding down to play over the center's head … Has excellent rip skills to fight through the double team … Uses his club-and-swim moves with consistency when shedding … Plays with above-average balance and body control … Gets a good inside surge with his initial burst.
Negatives: Tends to go upright when his initial move does not work, and as a result loses leverage on the play … Has concentration lapses and needs to show a better overall awareness for the play … Can be knocked off balance by a hand jolt, as he keeps his feet too close together, but he has the rip skills to fight through the double team … While he is adequate as a pass rusher, he needs to develop another move when redirecting inside (blockers can get into his chest, as he leaves himself exposed at times) … Sometimes tries to overpower his man on each play, taking him out of the action as he hesitates some to redirect. CAREER NOTES A standout on a defensive line loaded with superb talent, Joseph established himself as one of the finest defensive linemen in Miami's proud history … Widely considered UM's finest defensive tackle since 1994 Lombardi Trophy winner Warren Sapp … Named to the 2002 Playboy Preseason All-America team, the Hurricane is a quiet player who has been overlooked for much of his college career, but is considered among the nation's best by his own coaches and opposing teams … Has started all 41 games (including bowl games) since becoming a Hurricane … Has a combination of size and strength that opponents have found difficult to handle … Developed a strong push off the line and has been particularly adept at stopping the run … Recorded 199 tackles (87 solos) with 19½ sacks for minus-124 yards, 46 stops for losses of 195 yards and 75 quarterback pressures during his career. 2002 SEASON All-Big East Conference first-team selection … Semifinalist for the Lombardi Award … Started every game at left defensive tackle, recording 51 tackles (21 solos) with 5 sacks for minus-35 yards … Led the team with 29 quarterback pressures and 15 stops for losses of 60 yards … Also deflected 5 passes.
* Florida A&M - Began the season with a 3-yard sack and a pair of stops for losses. * Florida - Made 4 hits and stopped tailback Earnest Graham for a 6-yard loss. * Temple - Added another 4 tackles, including an 8-yard sack. * Boston College - Had a stop behind the line of scrimmage and 6 tackles. * Connecticut - Batted away a pair of passes. * Florida State - Followed with 5 tackles and 2 stops for losses. * Rutgers - Was in on 7 tackles with 2 stops for minus-3 yards. * Tennessee - Had another 2 stops for losses and made 6 assisted tackles. * Pittsburgh - Registered 6 tackles with a pair of sacks for minus-16 yards and 3 stops behind the line of scrimmage. * Virginia Tech - Deflected a pass, posted 3 tackles and had an 8-yard sack. * Ohio State (Fiesta Bowl) - Closed out his career with 3 tackles (2 solos).
2001 SEASON Earned third-team All-America recognition by the Associated Press … Second-team All-Big East selection by the league's head coaches … Led the team in quarterback sacks (10 for 69 yards) and tackles for loss (19 for 85 yards) … His 10 sacks tied for 10th on the Miami single-season sacks list with Kevin Patrick (1993) … Ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 59 (34 solos) and caused 4 fumbles … Posted sacks in 6 games, including the last 4 in a row … Had 17 quarterback pressures. 2000 SEASON Manned the right defensive tackle position, recording 40 tackles (15 solos) with 3 sacks for minus-7 yards and 6 stops for losses of 18 yards … Credited with 12 quarterback pressures. 1999 SEASON Named to The Sporting News Freshman All-America second team … Began the season at right defensive end before moving to right tackle … Totaled 49 tackles (17 solos) with 1½ sacks for minus-13 yards and 6 stops for losses of 32 yards … Caused and recovered a fumble … Also made 18 quarterback pressures. 1998 SEASON Redshirted as a freshman. First of all let me say how much I enjoy your posts when you talk "pure football". I've learned much from them.
However I have an issue with placing so much blame on KS for the terriblee play of our 06 OL as a unit. I dvr'd all the games last year and rewatched them as toad asked us to in his defense of RD. IMO Druzzi was the obvious weakest link.
I don't profess to be an OL guru like you and some others on here but I know that protection up front works from the inside out. Looking back, the center position was a huge question mark going into the season. The aquisition of Fraley was key, but didn't come till the season was upon us. I think you'll agree that this severely retarded the stabilization and progress of the OL as a unit pretty severely. I think we started out with Druzzi making the line calls and I can't really give him a passing grade on that but i salute his efforts.
I don't want to go into the whole Mo thing, but his OL coach, who was also his "heir apparent" couldn't get on the same page as his OC. The entire freekin deal was a recipe for disaster. How the heck can your OL coach be your OC's boss? These guys could never get on the same page. At least some of the blame has to be laid at the organizational structure.
All that being said, Joe Thomas really can be our salvation. He has the skills, but more importantly just his demeanor will bring sooo much to the table. Shaffer has the "look" of a nasty RT if he embraces the role and learns. The upgrade from Druz to Steinbach makes me giddy. Bently WILL return someday! There will be talent to compete at RG. Last years' glaring weakness is now a strength. Here's hoping Chud can use these tools that Savage has got him and really polarize this offense and get things clickin!

I don't think there's a chance we could get our hands on Coefield for Shaffer. He's only 23 years old. I doubt they want to unload such a talented, young player for an average to below average OT. We would probably have to throw in a DP as well...a 4th or 5th to make that happen.

We finally have the potential for a very good Oline and we are talking about trading Shaffer. Unfortunate? Maybe...for Shaffer. Crazy? I don't think so...maybe.
I have gone back and forth with the possibility of trading Shaffer. First I'm all for it...then I want to keep him as we need a viable backup option at LT...and I'd prefer that we leave Steiner right where he is slated.
If Shaffer can play RT as well as Tuck, I hope we keep him...if the Giants pull down their pants for him, I hope we trade him.
It feels weird to actually have a player that someone else wants (maybe) and for whom we could net a very good pick.
It could work out just fine whether we keep him or trade him. Hmmm, when was the last time we could say that about a player who might actually be tradeable...yet we wouldn't mind keeping?
Uh oh, maybe I just created the ultimate measuring stick for Opie?

Thanks for the compliment.
I tried clarifying this earlier in my response to danglet, but I am not placing all the blame on the offensive line woes on Shaffer. The unit was terrible. Andruzzi was bad, he is old and slow. Fraley is not a road grader, more of a technician and he struggled because he had to learn a new system. Coleman is a bum. We obviously had problems at RT because Tuck was out much of the year.
So..........I understand the entire line was hurting. However, I was making a direct reply to opie about Shaffer. I gave my views on him, nothing more, nothing less.

I would hope they would not make this trade. I hated KS at LT but if he can be an above avg. RT and the other pieces can fall into place I don't see us getting value for him. I also have concerns about Tuckers health. I hope to see Tucker play every game this year but there is no guarantee of that. If for some reason he has to miss even a couple of games I would feel much better about Shaffer on the right side than any of our other options at this point.
Why trade what little depth we do have? Unless it's a deal that blows us away I don't see a need to make the trade.

U bet your ass...PEOPLE...As much as we've lacked quality STARTERS...Our DEPTH was just as putrid...
U put Shaffer at RT and Tucker at RG and if either goes down u don't miss a beat...McKinney then goes to RG...
Just because u pick up anything better DOES NOT mean u trade what u had...
DEPTH is a huge part of the problem on this team...
Go Browns!!!

If the Bentley rumor proves true. Joe T, Steinbach, Bentley, Tucker, Shaffer now if Shaffer is gone, you are one ankle sprain away from having Nat Dorsey protecting a rookie QB's blindside.

Verse and Dang...great discussion. It's a pleasure to read two people discussing things without the chest pounding I'm smarter than you garbage that too often permiates this board.
I agree they won't trade Shaffer because for once we have some interchangeable pieces.
Good job guys.

on a side note, we saw that savage isn't afraid to gamble. what happens if NY offers a guy who can play DE, or a good draft pick. do you gamble on tuck at RT?
I'll confess, when I first saw the rumor about the trade, I was hoping we could get something that would take the sting away of not having a 1st round next year. I see that as bad as he was last year, he helps us more here then away.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

If Joe T got an ankle sprain I doubt they would put Dorsey over there. What they would probably do is put Steinbach at LT then put McKinney at LG..etc
If our RT goes down we still have Butler who is decent as a backup RT. Like I said if we can get a first rounder or Coefield out of the deal I would have problem with it.

*shudders*
I don't want Shaffer traded for that sole reason. I don't wanna already predict doom and gloom for the line but the depth would be huge by having a guy who could step in who's at least started at the position before if something (god forbid) happened to Thomas.
As far as this Bentley rumor goes, I'll take it for a grain of salt, but if it happens I'll be talking at least 1,500 yards for Jamal Lewis. This line would be THAT capable, I think/hope. But that might be the optimist in me talking.

I agree that it would be stupid to trade schaffer now that we are close to getting a little depth and a half decent offensive line. just a simple question for those o-line experts. Can Schaffer be average if not better at right tackle? Just a side not if the browns o-line is bad again this year that would be pathetic considering we will probably have the highest paid offensive line in the NFL.

If Shaffer is traded it will be for two reasons. 1-Too much money tied up in the line
2- they can't fit Shaffer in a RT/RG. That may be the huge reason
And if they can get a draft pick next year and/or a player to fill a hole it may be done.

I'm more than convinced that we'd only trade him if the Giants made us one of those "offers we can't refuse." They need a LT desperately, and we happen to have ......er.........two (I guess ).
Outside of that, Savage can't be comfortable going into the season with Tucker as the full-time guy and Butler as the backup. Tucker's track record is too spotty and he's old.
Hell, I bet Savage would trade Edwards or Wimbley if the price were right.........

It would be a stupid move. We have no depth at tackle and even if Shaffer is extremely overpaid
You know,I keep hearing the "overpaid" thing over and over, but really?
Just for grins, let's say Shaffer CAN be a decent RT and we can move Tucker to G. If he CAN make a decent RT,let me pose this to you.
We just paid a top flight G over 49 mil So is a decent RT at 36 mil really so "overpaid" considering that?
Shaffer won't be over paid if he becomes decent. I just doubt he will from what I have heard about him from certain people I believe that have some inkling on what is happening from the inside.

Excatly,
Havent we learned anything form last years opening day at training camp, were not gonna trade a O-lineman a last year starter at that just becuase we draft J.Thomas, unless it's a as stated above a cant refuse, We need depth & options, injures happen to every team all the time, we will not trade shaffer until we know a few things upfront.
1. J.Thomas is not Gallery 2. R.Tucker is really back & healthy 3. Everybody is somewhat healty going into the season or close to the season, 4. Were not gonna trade a starter, only to have one go down and have to trade to get one like we did at center last year, or start N.Dorsey.
The idea of depth is having good players not start but could if something happens, and good players cost money, ya shaffers alot, but we finally have depth.

The "problem" we have is even though many of us don't like Schaffer and call him a bum, a backup, and so on at the LT position...he is in fact an experienced LT. If other teams just look at his stats for sacks given and watched some of his better games when he and Druzzi were actually playing decent then he becomes a savior to a desperate team. If you need proof look no further than Dallas this off season and what they paid Davis. He may be way too valuable (perceived) to another team for us to keep.

I hope that's the case. I'd love to acquire a very high draft pick for a below-average left tackle.

Let me guess, Savage knew that Bentley was only holding the fort until we could find a REAL center. Getting Hank was proof of it.
dude, I know you were trying to be sarcastic and funny but I think that's a bit of a low blow to Bentley, plus, it's a much different circumstance than Shaffer. I'm no OL guru but by what I seen last year NONE of the OL played very well and that would include Shaffer. At this point I think he was WAY overpaid. Now IF he can move to the right side and be more productive then at least we get something for the HUGE amount of money he got. IF he does not show improvement then I'm sure he will be replaced.

Now Toad, let's not fall off the rocking chair. Savage would not trade Wimbley, now Edwards is another story. I'm sure if the right offer was in place, Edwards would be packing his bags. As for Shaffer, well, if we get a really good offer then I can see trading him but other than that I'd like to see if he can work out on the right side. Then draft an RT and RG in the next draft or 2 and beef this OL up to BEASTLY status. btw, IF Shaffer is traded I really don't think we would net a first round pick unless it's a late first and I really doubt that. Might be able to pull a 2nd round for him though.

I've fallen out of other chairs. Bring on the rocker *L*
A 2nd for Shaffer? Where do I sign off on this deal.........
A sad reality surrounding Necktie is that while in Atlanta, his biggest flaws were hidden because teams couldn't simply rush upfield due to Vick taking off and gaining 15. That kept rusher right in front of him where he could use brute strength to hold them off.
He didn't have that luxury here.
I'd trade him for a 2nd rounder, then use those to get back into the 1st next year. In the meantime, we can throw the dice on Tucker for another year. Worst case scenario is a June 1st cut.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

They were the best rushing team in the league too. That helped.

Tucker's track record is too spotty and he's old..........
That's pretty much a 100% accurate "short version".
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

While true, you just gave the pro-Necktie crowd (all 3 of'em ) some ammunition to say he'll get better because we'll have an improved rushing attack.

Shaffer won't be over paid if he becomes decent. I just doubt he will from what I have heard about him from certain people I believe that have some inkling on what is happening from the inside.
Would you settle for "better than Butler"?
And like Toad pointed out The G-MEN are desperate at LT. It may force them to give up a good quality player at one of our need positions to acquire Shaffer. I can live with that too.

Allow me to project into the future. Getting Joe was huge for this offense. Yeah, he will struggle as a young LT. I can already hear the dumb fans and media now saying crap like Joe gave up more sacks than Shaffer did the year before...he's a bust. The reality of it though will be that Joe will enable this offense to actually run more pro set formations, just like a real NFL team. He will handle the outside pass rushers all on his own, allowing the LG to stay inside and help pick-up the late inside blitz. You have to remember the delayed inside blitz and how it killed us last year, right? Joe Thomas will make us a much better football team and most fans won't even know it, just as they didn't pick up on how bad Shaffer really was.
I won't crucify you as I feel you are entitled to your opinion and what you said is not fueled by agenda. You also made a great point about it being the first year as a LT in a right-handed offense. That is something we all should consider and frankly, I admit, that I have overlooked that at times.
I will agree that Joe was huge for the offense, and believe me, I’m one happy camper that we drafted him, and I was even before we got Quinn. Unlike those fans which you project will be labeling him a bust if he gives up more sacks than Shaffer, I won’t be one of them.
I understand that he’ll be able to play on an island and will be a much better LT than Shaffer and frankly, I was never trying to claim that Shaffer was a good LT, just that he wasn’t the worst thing to come along since “New Coke,” because he’s been bashed pretty handily here.
I do remember the inside blitzes, and I remember the outside blitzes, and every other blitz imaginable because teams were able to use them all. Some games were hard to watch just because of how beat up Charlie got.
I’m not disagreeing with you that Joe Thomas is superior or what he will do for the team. What he will allow us to do is move KS to RT, KS being a blue collar, coachable guy who, once again was either undrafted or a 7th rounder (can’t quite recall which) who worked himself into a starter.
No, he doesn’t have the speed to take on the RDE’s in this league, but he does have the strength to take on LDE’s, and I think if you move him over he can continue to improve as a player, especially with this superior offense, which finally has some weapons to work with.
Quote:
Summary: I feel he is better suited to the RT spot than LT. I do think he will struggle there too. While he is very strong, his lack of technique will put him in some bad positions and he will be steamrolled by some power rushers. However, if he gets his head out of his ass and listens to his coaches a bit more, thereby improving his technique, he could make the transfer from LT to RT. And the bottom line is..........the Browns will be a better team if he can do that. He is making big bucks.....and we need him to contribute.
I think he will struggle AT FIRST as a RT, but as I said above he’s a guy who looks to improve, evidence by his interviews last year on the home page. Granted, the guy may not be a Brady Quinn ( ) when it comes to talking to reporters, but all he ever talked about was going into practice looking to get better for the next week.
IMO he’s not a guy to avoid admitting his faults, and will work his ass off to correct them, hence his improvement since he’s been in the league. I think eventually he could turn himself into a damn good RT, but in the end he may be better playing in a phone booth at guard. I frankly can’t claim to know if he can do that because I’m not in the weight room with him and I don’t know how strong his lower body is.
In conclusion though, by no stretch of the imagination am I claiming that he was a great or even good LT last year and getting Joe makes this team A LOT better. However, Shaffer is a big, strong, blue collar guy looking to improve who with some coaching could turn into a pretty good RT IMO. At the very least he could be a decent one. He’s a younger guy who I think was set back when he was asked to protect a QB’s blind side on what was, from a talent standpoint, an inferior offensive line with no running game and no real passing game.
I’m hopeful for the guy, and I think it’s ridiculous to call him “necktie” or to bash the guy for being put in a position which he had never been in (right handed offense) which had an inferior offense compared to his last team (Falcons). The guys a run blocker who values improvement, just consider his last team, and he’s one that I refuse to bash, and IMO those who do should consider that he’s the best shot that we’ve got when it comes to a young, above average RT.
