I wondered how long it would take until someone asked this question,, The answer is: When he's ready!

It just kills me that seemingly everyone is totally happy to write of the 2007 season.
I am not. That is another reason why Quinn should play early.
Exactly, and what I like about the trade is that there should not be that "Well if we lose these last 3 games we get the X pick in the draft."
Screw that, we don't have a first round pick, I hope I don't see that at all this year.

My biggest fear is the way Quinn handled the pressure of the BIG bowl games, he didn't, and that worries me.
Remember i'm a frye backer here, But I didnt wanna draft Quinn due to this performance in Big games & Bowls, but if you look at his stats & performance, take away the Ohio state Bowl Game, he did rather well, I do think the team around him was the problem, many times it was the Defence team that gave up points into the 40's which cost the Irish the game, Brady had to score into the 40's to keep his team in the game. i'm not a Quinn fan yet, he is a Browns so i'll back him, but I still need to see him earn the Orange helment.

I agree, more specifically when Romeo feels he is ready. Although I will say I hope that Quinn in all his NFL readiness can beat out Frye in camp and start day 1 to get his rookie year out of the way. So that we can make a serious push in his year 2.

Frye get hurt.....with our line, Frye's not gonna even gonna get touched, and thats without Bently, Adding Bently to our line is like a old Tide detergent comercial to Charlie, Grass stains are a thing of the past....

depends entirely upon how Quinn progresses and what the coaching staff thinks. Him sitting out the entire 2007 season though just isn't realistic and is all but guaranteed not to happen unless there's an injury or nasty holdout.

Right off the bat Quinn vs Frye is a wash. Without throwing a pass Quinn is atleast as good at Frye, I dont doubt that.
Now if the Browns want the fans into the games, and Quinn shows he's ready then game on baby. I dont want to zombie through another season of football. Quinn gets fans fired up and ready to go week 1. Theyll also be more forgiving, so you wont get a giant chorus of boos at halftime every week. Youll just get a few.
That being said....Frye starts until Romeo gets fired. These guys dont take risks, and are very slow to respond to critical situations.
Go Browns!

Everyone is assuming that Quinn is going to take the job.
Not so.
Frye has every opportunity here to KEEP his job. If he continue's to have an 80's rating going through the season, Quinn won't see the field. There's nothing the Browns would like more than to have TWO viable QB's. It's the one position where having two good players is NEVER a bad thing.
Now going on the assumption that Frye can't turn the corner, he'll start until we're a couple of games past the "official out of the playoff picture" category. Quinn will have had time to learn the offense and can then get his feet wet.
Back when people yammered that Frye shouldn't start in year one at all, I attempted to point out that starting him after we were out of the playoff picture did several things. First, it got his feet wet. Second, it allowed the players to get used to him (a severely overlooked aspect of developing a rookie QB). Third, it allowed the organization to evaluate him. That was one of my most fevered points, in that he was a project QB who had serious limitations. The sooner we had a chance to see what we had, the sooner we had the chance to make the final call and go from there.
Well, two years later we've made the determination that he's a poor bet. Had we not started him those final 5 games (or whatever it was) we may not have traded up to get Quinn, and been stuck with Frye. We'd also have waited one more year to acquire a future QB, without the guarantee that we'd have been able to land one.
Very important stuff there.
So the cycle completes itself. Frye will start until the rook is ready and we're out of the playoff picture, unless he's doing well then we don't have to rush Quinn at all.
So, having said all that, when do I think he'll start? The last six games or so of the year.
Sounds reasonable, except it would mean we go ten games with a struggling Frye, turning the team over to Quinn after the season is shot. I would much prefer to see an improved Frye come out, (behind an improved line, under a new system having developed chemistry with his receivers,) and have a decent year, allowing BQ to hold the clipboard behind Anderson. That would be ideal. However it will be determined by how much Charlie has improved. His timing and ball placement must improve or Brady will flat beat him out for the job, IMO. I personally think that when coaches see these guys side by side, Charlie will need to use every advantage his experience gives him plus show actual improvement with ball placement over last year to beat out Quinn. Poor timing and ball placement causes turnovers, costs points and gets people hurt and, (say what you will about the route running,) this is an area where Charlie needs to show vast improvement. Also, he is bound to have a tough time stacking up against Brady with the long ball, so we'll see what happens there. Like I said though, I would love to see Charlie start and have a good year, and being in his third year he may just step it up and do it. If he does, I hope he keeps the job all year or until we no longer have a shot at the playoffs.

i don't think you can say that he should start this day or he should start that day...
he starts when he's ready...
i think he can probably win the job... but if i'm wrong, and frye steps it up, that makes me happy... you want competition...
playing 2 years under charlie weis should help brady win the job...
being overmatched in all of his "big games" helps too...
we'll see what happens in training camp, but honestly, it's a win/win situation...
i have absolutely no problem rolling out frye with the first game...
if frye steps it up, we have a solid backup, and possibly some value in a trade at some point down the line... (although i'd like to have the solid backup, in my opinion)

I'm saying if BQ takes over the last six games, (assuming Charlie wins the starting job,) it will be due to the fact that the season is tanked and Frye has struggled all year, the logic being that if Charlie is having a good year, then we have a decent record, we're still in the playoff hunt and there's no reason to start Brady at all. While I'm hoping Charlie does win the starting job and has a great year, personally I think Quinn'll beat him out in camp and we'll have to suck it up while he works through the development and growth period over next two years... In the mean time, we have fairly decent backups just in case. We'll see what happens though.

Ive always thought that unless you have a weak coach you cant have a real QB controversy. And with the investment in Quinn he is pretty much the destined starter. Its really only a matter of time at this point unless Frye can really turn it up. For a first and a second Quinn is now the face of the franchise.

i really agree about having a strong coach makes the qb controversy just a media thing...
i thought mike shanahan did the right thing with cutler, even though they ended up missing the playoffs... jake plummer was just not getting it done...
tennessee was really only screwing around by not starting vince young on day one... i think cutler's waiting was justified, but vince young was ready day one...
different strokes for different folks, we just won't know with qunn until it happens, although playing for charlie weis, a guy who's probably the best, and one of the best ever to handle quarterbacks, is a very very good thing... we all rip him for being an overrated college coach, but that man does know how to coach a quarterback...

I wrote this to another post .. after reading yours I had to post it here I'm just wondering what people think about this: this is just a what if, not saying it is going to happen but there is a good chance since it is unlikely Quinn is going to start. (although I have talked to alot of Browns fan and some non Browns fans that think he will)-- but when Charlie starts and everyone knows he is going to start.. not saying he won't get yanked if he loses and I know most people say he will lose.. But we don't know that for sure... So to get to my question: what if Charlie wins and gets us to the playoffs now that we have a better OLine, how many of you Browns fans are still going to call for Quinn just because he is a sexy pick. I can see it now Frye wins , gets us to the playoffs, and then we trade him in 2008 and start Quinn just because he is suppose to be the better QB. And please don't respond Frye is not going to start and he won't win and so on. that is not what this comment is about i'm just saying what if he gets us to the playoffs will you still want Quinn.. you have got to be kidding me .. if Frye lights it up why would we ever get rid of him and start an unproven NFL QB ------ this is what i was responding to ------- Quote:
It's hard to say. In all honesty I'm hoping Chuck just lights it up this season and we can sit on BQ untill 2008. That would give Quinn a year to learn the system and also give the team a VERY tradeable commodity in Frye (which would be HUGE since we don't have a #1 in 2008).

This will be up to Romeo. This Browns fan wants it to be sooner than later. Quinn ran a pro style offense with Notre Dame under Charlie Weis. I believe Charlie's playbook would be a little tougher than the Browns is. We saw Carthon's and Davidson's playbook last year and it left a little to be desired. I understand the offense was limited because of a rotten offensive line. Now we have Chudzinski's playbook and I don't think it could be any more difficult than Charlie Weis's is. The first thing to remember is that this isn't 1999 and our team is better than 1999. We have a much improved offensive line and even with Brady Quinn being a rookie I think he'll be ok. Tim Couch was thrown in there with an expansion team with a just dreadfull offensive line. In 1999 what weapons did Couch have? His starting RB-Terry Kirby,WR-Kevin Johnson,Leslie Sheppard,Darrin Chiaverini, and the great Ronnie Powell, TE- Irv Smith and Mark Campbell; not a ringing endorsement of touchdowns! I think that Quinn has much better weapons; RB-Jamal Lewis,WR- Braylon Edwards,Joe Jurevicius,Travis Wilson, and Josh Cribbs, TE-KW2 and Steve Heiden; now I think there is no comparison between the weapons from 1999 to 2007. The offensive line is a heck of a lot better than 1999 also! Now let's get to the 2007 QB's. We have Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, and highly touted rookie Brady Quinn. Now I understand that it was a huge mistake to throw Couch in to start the second game of the season in 1999 but he had very little help from the rest of the offense. This is 2007 not 1999 and if Quinn picks up the offense well enough in training camp and the preseason and outplays both Frye and Anderson then why shouldn't he start against the Steelers? Does anyone on this board really believe that Frye or Anderson are better than Brady Quinn? I watched last season on how hard it was for both of them to read a defense. Neither of them could consistantly read the blitz or even a coverage. Anderson looked great against a "soft" Chief defense and didn't look bad against the Ravens but against the Steelers and the Buccaneers he was pretty bad. Charlie struggled all year behind an awful offensive line and I'm very interested to see if he or Anderson improve with a much improved OL. I think Brady Quinn is a huge upgrade over Frye and Anderson and really believe he will start a lot sooner than most expect. Why do you think Savage gave up a 1st and a 2nd for him? Quinn could quite possibly start week 1 against the Steelers. I'm not saying he will but it is very possible. This Browns fan doesn't think it would hurt Quinn to play early. I could be wrong but this isn't 1999 and I am tired of not winning any division games! We have been on the bottom long enough! Let Quinn start if he's ready and I have a hunch that he will be! I would like to say it's great to be back and posting on this board! I've missed a lot of you guys because the new board has a bunch of young puppies on it and it just seems that there a lot of dumb posts on it. Is overtoad still here? I have to admit that I missed you Toad!? Wow, I never thought I would say that? It's great to be back! Thank you Phil Savage and Go Browns!!!!!

You lost me when you said there is no difference in ND playbook and a pro playbook. Charlie Weis or not they probably don't run half the plays as the Pros. I for one am not sure BQ is better than Frye. I'm also not sure he isn't. If our o-line jells early and Charlie is given some time then we can make a judgement. I don't think BQ is as acruate but maybe has a slight advantage in arm strength. As for reading Blitzs, the WR are suposed to read that also, cut off their routes early for a quick pass to the open area. I think Braylon made up his own routes but for some reason he pretty much gets a pass on here and Frye gets hammered.

Dawgduty, you lost me when you assumed the combination of a playbook done up by Carthon/Davidson is a tougher read than Weis's playbook. Are you kidding me? Carthon was fired and Davidson wasn't rehired, remember? I feel confident that Brady Quinn can read and digest the playbook of Chudzinski. By the way Turk nice to see you still are hard on everyone. Thank you Phil Savage and Go Browns!!!!!

ANSWER...When Quinn "earns" the starting position, he will start.
Crennel has never seemed like the type that hands starting positions out without competition to determine who is best, regardless of position. The Browns first round pick of the 2006 draft did not start in the first game of the 2006 regular season.
I do not look for Anderson, Frye and Dorsey to just roll over either.
I look forward to a great competition between all our QB for the starting QB position.
It's a new season, with a new OC with a new play book. The QB that executes that playbook best will be our starter.
It would not surprise me nor worry me if Brady Quinn was #2 or #3 on the QB depth chart at the start of the 2007 season...
The Browns do have a history with starting rookie QBs. Let's hope that history is not repeated.

Everyonne agrees Couch was brought in on a knee jerk reaction..and in a way so was Frye..yet with his liabilites it could be that they are left no choice..neither Frye/DA possess the skills to carry a offense for 16 games and PRODUCE effectively/consistantly.

If that is what it takes to light a fire under Frye then I don't even want him as a Brown! Not even a back up which is what he is.Book it.
Just wait till next season, I have heard that for over 40 years!

Tacker...I wonder if better protection from the Offensive line will help last years QBs?
Last season at ND, Quinn definitely had more time to throw the ball than our QB had here at Cleveland.
My point is, I seriously doubt that Crennel is going to hand the job to Quinn.
Quinn will have to earn the starting job and that is how it should be.
Some fans seem to think that Quinn is far superior to the 3 Browns QBs from last season. I don't see it that way. I believe all our QBs of last season will benefit from an improved Browns Oline. Quinn should be used to good offensive line play as his ND front five did a good job of protecting Brady.
The best QB should start, regardless of the name on the back of the jersey.
I believe it's going to be a tough QB competition and that the cream will rise to the top.

I am beginning to question Savage's talent decisions. I have given him a pass on a lot of things.
1) 2005 - draft a 3rd round QB to eventually lead the franchise 2007 - give up 2008 #1 pick & 2007 #2 pick to draft a QB
2) 2005 Trade for a RB. Reuben Droughns produces a 1,200 yard season. 2006 Give RD a 4-year contract. 2006 Trade RD away for next to nothing.
3) 2006 Sign (LT) Kevin Shaffer to a 7-year 36 million dollar contract. 2007 Draft at #3 a LT.
From where I sit, the drafting of Quinn and Wright are acts of desperation. He is hoping throwing another rookie into the fire buys him another two years. For all of his talk when first hired about bringing in character guys... the pick of Wright is striking.
Just some food for thought Merth,,, let's say that in each of those cases, Savage feels he needed to upgrade.. Ok, he picked Charlie in the 3rd round.. then spent this years 2nd rounder and next years 1st rounder to acquired the 22nd and get Quinn,,
Let's look at that, If we didn't take Quinn, then maybe we would have taken a QB in the 1st next season.. so it's really just an even swap there.. so really, what did we give up to get Quinn a year early,,,,,,,,,,,, A 2nd round pick,,, Man that's pretty cheap.
The Thomas/Shaffer thing is also easy to understand.. we lost Shelton, we needed a LT,, Shaffer was the best available so we bought him.. What's so hard to figure out there,,, But shaffer didn't prove to be all that good, so, with our 1st pick, we take Thomas who promises to be the next great LT in the league,,, Again, can you tell me what's wrong with that.
With Droughns,, look, the guy never got into trouble before we picked him up,, now he's seemingly in trouble every other day.. on top of which he wasn't all that productive after we gave him the big contract,, what do you want, Savage to sit on his hands and do nothing?
All in all, I think Savage is now proving his worth..

ugggh.........no he didn't. You either didn't watch many ND games, or just made that up to push your point. Quinn lived under pressure most of the year, and in every "big game" he played in.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

I think it's easy for anyone to point to the past and say, had we struck gold here instead of striking out, we wouldn't have had to re-address the problem 2 years later. Hindsight is 20/20. We did what we thought was best at the time and, in some cases (Shaffer) it was all we could do. Now, we see that in each of those cases, we didn't get all we had hoped for out of those decisions and we've done what we can to upgrade and make those positions stronger. Phil may be a lot of things, but he's not a fortune teller.

Romeo has to win NOW there is no tommorow for Mr. Crennel. He will start whichever QB he feels gives him the best chance to win.

IF Frye "Lights it up" doesn't Quinn become the tradable commodity?
No. If Frye lights it up then he becomes tradeable, not the QB who sat behind him and has yet to play. Think of Brees/Rivers.
Of course, if you find a desperate enough GM then it is possible to trade the unproved one (think Vick/Schuab).
Or one could look at it this way - what would it take for us to feel as though we got good trade value for Quinn? We traded a 2nd and 1st for him, so someone would have to pony up something beyond that to get us to move him. Frye, even if he "lit it up", would be more affordable, and thus more tradeable.
Quinn is/will be the face of the Browns. I just hope we don't have to see his obnoxious sister all the time.
