Anyway, just a general question for those who paid attention to him.
I cannot bring myself to watch Ravens games. It just goes against my DNA.
How does McPhee project as a starter in the 3-4? (You can't pay him a premium contract to be a backup/situational guy, he has to start and produce)
McPhee is 6'3", and 280#. Is he a DE, or is he an OLB? Where would you see him playing for us? How do you expect that he would fit? Besides being a decent pass rusher, (on a team fairly loaded with pass rush patent) does he bring a rounded game to a team, or is he just a situational pass rusher? The Ravens have Suggs (12.0 sacks) and Dumervil(17 sacks) on their team.
How does McPhee play the run? If he is going to be a full time player, and a high dollar player, then he has to play the run as well as the pass. Can he set the edge, or does he get caught up in the wash on run plays? How is his tackling?
I get really worried when considering a part time specialist for a full time job with a big dollar contract. Can anyone alleviate my concerns?
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Plus he's scrappy.. I like my defenders like I like my cartoon dogs.. TG - like most posters, I agree with some of what you say, and disagree with other things. Scrappy DBs are a good thing, but I cannot get my head around someone who likes Scrappy Doo. He is the Ted McGinley of the Scooby Doo franchise.

While I hope we take care of our own and resign most. I don't think we will be players in the FA Market, pretty sure Haslam spilled the beans earlier stating we won't be big players in FA.
I do however expect around 2 significant FA signings early then possibly later some depth if need be.
jmho - but a whole who's who list we won't be doing.

Cecil Shorts III WR/Jacksonville Niles Paul TE/Washington Pernell McPhee DE/Baltimore Mike Ipuati OG/San Francisco Dan Williams DT/Arizona Brian Hartline WR/Miami (If he's released, Rumored he could be cap casualty in Miami). Jason Worilds OLB/Pittsburgh (He was tagged last year, and they're letting him test free agency this year).
At this point those are the guys I hope we're targeting.

My guess is that we don't know how well McPhee would play against the run because he doesn't play against the run. Or he's not good against the run because the Ravens (a smart team) didn't play him against the run.
He was only on the field for 515 defensive snaps. For comparison, Jabaal Sheard was on the field for 676, Mingo for 667, and Kruger for 899. Kruger's last year with the Ravens (2012) he was on the field for 789 snaps.
We already have two guys who should be on the field for the majority of defensive snaps, Kruger and Mingo. Both, contrary to popular opinion, are pretty well rounded. We might be better off going for one of the lower tier passing rushers or investing a draft pick on a pass rusher.

James Casey is to visit the Browns. He is older and has been a backup the past few seasons. I am not all that excited.

EDIT - Just saw someone else posted this. Not able to delete it. This guy's visiting us . . . http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...ent-world-tour/James Casey keeps adding dates to his free agent world tour Posted by Darin Gantt on February 25, 2015, 9:12 AM EST Every year, some guy gets cut and hits early free agency, and suddenly has a market no one would have expected. This year, it’s versatile fullback/tight end/special teamer James Casey. According to Adam Caplan of ESPN, the former Eagles Swiss Army knife is adding the Titans and Browns to his world tour, along with previously reported stops in Arizona and Denver. Casey rose to prominence in Houston under Gary Kubiak (which is why the Denver trip makes sense), earning a nice payday from the Eagles in 2013. He’s the kind of player every coach wants, because he can fill many roles. The question is value, as the Eagles found him to be overpaid after two seasons. Another team may find the same in a few years. But at the moment, Casey has what every free agent dreams of — options.

I think he's more of a tight end/special teamer, which is something we already have. Although if Casey agrees to a cheaper contract I could see one of Barnidge or Dray being cut. I would hope we would look to get a real fullback if we are going to use one.

He played fullback for the Texans but was mostly a receiving option, not a blocker. No matter what way you look at it, Casey is not a game changer. His best season he had 330 yards receiving for the Texans and that was 2012.

Now this guy would interest me as a return man. 30+ yards/return on kickoffs, with a TD and 5 returns of 40+ yards, and he also returned punts last year. If we want a guy who is strictly a KR type guy, this is who I would look at. Ravens release Jacoby Jones : Fantasy News http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball/update/25081295/ravens-release-jacoby-jonesThe Ravens released wide receiver Jacoby Jones on Wednesday, the team announced. "Jacoby is one of my most favorite players ever to coach, an absolute joy to be around," coach John Harbaugh said. Jones was primarily used a return specialist in 2014. During the season, he hauled in nine passes for 131 yards, but had 978 kick-return yards with one touchdown. He also had 275 punt-return yards. "We thank Jacoby for what he did for us," Harbaugh said. "He was invaluable to our success. Opponents, especially on special teams, schemed to stop him. What a compliment to him."

The latest update is that the video has been verified by Adam Shefter. Dez Bryant's horrific 'Ray Rice-style' video set to be released today, career in jeopardy [Report] | Seattle http://seattle.suntimes.com/nfl/7/72/695824/dez-bryant-video-released

Egad! I hadn't heard the Schefter bit. Here’s the transcript:
Carmen and Jurko: What’s going on with Dez Bryant?
Adam Schefter: That’s a very interesting question. I’ll just say this – check back with me on that one.
Carmen and Jurko: Have you heard about this video? Do you know what’s on it?
Schefter: Yeah.
Carmen and Jurko: Have you seen it?
Schefter: I have not seen it.
Carmen and Jurko: Is he doing something criminal? Can you talk about it?
Schefter: I’ll say this: I’ve been working on this since September.
Carmen and Jurko: Is it criminal?
Schefter: Like I said I’ve been working on it since September. There’s a lot involved.
Carmen and Jurko: Is this going to come out?
Schefter: Don’t know. Don’t know yet.
Carmen and Jurko: Okay. Wow. I have never heard about this until the weekend and now it’s all over the internet
Schefter: It’s taken up a lot of my time this season I’ll say that.
Carmen and Jurko: And you did it in a very clandestine way it sounds like. Did you feel like you had to?
Schefter: Well listen, whatever we’ve been working on is not ready and maybe it never will be. Who knows? You’ve got to be very careful on these things. People can talk about videos, they can talk about this they can talk about that. The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t mean anything and it’s really not fair to him right now until you have all your facts in line. Which we spent a long time trying to do. This is not going to end well.

IN Houston, HB role/TE correct. Not there to block just catch passes, incorrect.
He was the lead blocker for Foster from that H-Back role.
He also beat out Vickers who they signed and kept him mostly on the bench.
But he most definitely blocked.
jmhrecollection. I remember for those crying about us losing Vickers - I was pointing out he wasn't even playing that Casey beat him out for the lead blocking role as well as being better in the ZBS they ran also him going into motion for passes.

What I meant was that he is not the traditional thumper at fullback.
My guess is that Casey ends up with Denver and his old coach, Gary Kubiak.

h-Backs don't have that rep as Snot Bubble blockers...but they are called H-Back for that blocking role.
Kubiak or Shanny in Atlanta, seem to be his two best places to go. Agreed.

So, why did they cut him? My guess would be monetary reasons. They signed him to a big contract last year, that could be turned, essentially, into a year by year deal, depending on when he was cut. He is 31, so I wouldn't go crazy on a deal for him, but he has been effective.

Yeah I read they will save 3.3 million by cutting him. If he wants to come here cheap as a return man, I'd take him over anyone on our roster and over Ten Ginn.

Just too much money for a return guy. He never seemed to be able to become a regular in their WR corp. Similar to Cribbs with us.

I'd have a hard time investing real money in a kick returner when there are so many available in the draft and free agency.
They are there, you just have to find them.

Thought this was an interesting little nugget. All NFL teams must spend 89% to the cap in cash from 13-16. 9 teams currently under threshold: CAR, JAX, OAK, DAL, NE, NO, NYJ, NYG, WSH... Kinda surprised Cleveland is not on that list. https://twitter.com/JasonLaCanfora

I don't think I want Jacoby Jones.
He got a big deal after the Superbowl and then never really produced.
I'd rather bring Ted Ginn Jr. home at a modest price and let him return kickoffs and punts.

Dez is up for a contract, the Ray Rice video has died out of the media, it's the offseason with not much else to talk about, the owner of said video could have been negotiating the best deal... There are reasons this could have stayed a secret until now.

Would you rather have Josh McCown? When it comes down to it.. if we're just going to sign an old vet to hold down the job.. why not just bring back Hoyer? At least that doesn't bump up our total number of starters any..
