If I wonder if there are fish in a pond, I walk up to the edge and see there is small plant life and bugs. A little farther out and I find minnows. Odds are there are fish in that pond.

In space we find the edge is sterile. A little farther out, sterile, every place we look and dig and walk, sterile.

The evidence, actual evidence shows there is nothing alive and nothing ever was alive out there.

Keep dreaming though. Tell me when you find even a shred of evidence. In the mean time, Pat can show you plenty.

That's a bunk analogy since we haven't even walked up to the edge. We haven't even moved a centimeter yet. Space and the time required for space travel is so vast that you can't comprehend it.

Think about it more like this.

You go fishing in the ocean. You are the first person to ever fish in this ocean. You throw your line out and then take it back within the first 5 seconds. You will find no fish this way. But that doesn't mean that fish are not out there.

Pat shows us that we haven't even began searching for evidence of life. Not that there isn't any.

So, if that's true - basically 12 hours and recorded history is 14 seconds of it..........then "man made global warming", or "man made climate change", would be about what? .00001 of a second?

Edited to add: I don't doubt the truthfulness.......I'm just wondering where that puts us, as humans.

And yes, I know you're talking about the universe/cosmos/whatever.

He just wants to educate you on the wonders of scientific inquiry. Ignore the chain emails you constantly drabble on about. Go ahead and stream cosmos for free on Netflix of Amazon Prime. That'll be a more worthwhile pursuit than copy and pasting chain emails here.

Oddly enough, I think of that quite often - pertaining specifically to me, but people in general as well.

And we humans may be the only life in all the universe that can appreciate its glory.

Good on you Clem for owning up! A couple other questions though.

In the same sex marriage thread you say that the Bible was written by men.

In this thread you say that Robertson is bastardizing God's own word.

Which is it? God's word or man's word?

Reason I ask is this, there are atheists on the board here who say that the Bible is nothing but myths made up out of fear of death, there are those of us who believe the Bible is actually the Word of God and others who like the 'teachings' but don't believe in God (rockdogg comes to mind).

Said all that to ask this of your Clemoquence, who would make this up and why? I'll be 48 this July so I'm not a rookie on the planet and in all of my travels I have yet to meet a man outside of the faith that didn't live as a law to himself. I might be putting the poorly knowing human nature the way I (and I'm sure we all do) I cannot for the life of me think of a reason why any man or group of men would create a moral standard like the one found in the Bible?

Why would anyone care who slept with who?, or how many? If evolution were true, wouldn't it just be accepted that other creatures within our species are the way they are?

This is one of the many reasons I believe the Bible literally. The morality found in the scriptures goes WAY beyond what any man or woman would impose on themselves.

Hope this was clear enough.

By the way, as for all the science stuff about life on other planets, if God could do it here (and I believe he did), I'm sure he could do it somewhere else.

I just have to say something.

I have never read the Bible all the way through, from start to finish. I have read the New Testament, but very little of the Old. I have started now though.

The Old Testament is a set of Jewish books, written by Jews about Jews. It is also immensely non-complimentary to Jews. Man, the screw ups on the Jewish people, the stupidity of the Jewish people is just amazing. The patterns repeat over and over and over. God saves them, and a generation later they are worshiping some "god" they created in a forge. God punishes them, and they beg Him to save them, and He does. Then they turn away again, and start the whole cycle over again. They really never seemed to learn, at least early on. Plead with God, then reject Him, get punished, and plead with God to save them, then reject God, get punished, and plead with God to save them ...... the cycle must have played out more than 20 times in the early books of the Bible, the Torah, with is a very Holy Jewish book.

It would be like a book on early American history only pointing out where we screwed up.

These books are the Holy books of the Jews, and yet make them look so consistently bad that it's incredible.

Then I look at the books of the New testament, most of which I have read, and what do we find there? We find a perfect man, God made flesh, surrounded by some of the biggest failures humanity has ever known. We have failed fishermen, and a tax collector, and other such men, who are all deeply flawed men. We have Saul, who was a member of the religious class, who murdered the followers of Christ, a deeply respected man, with power and wealth, who gave up his noble name, for the more humble name of Paul, and who gave up his wealth, power, and prestige, to take on the "impossible" task of building Christ's church. He was the last man anyone would have expected to handle that task. That is a recurring theme in the Bible. The lowest show the way for everyone else. No one is too low to be saved and redeemed. The Gentile woman who had been married 5 times, and who was living with a man out of wedlock, who was the one Jesus revealed His identity to .... the adulterous woman He saved from being stoned to death, and so on, the Bible is full of God (Jesus) acting through those who were considered the bottom of the barrel by Jewish society. Jesus' disciples almost all abandoned Him when He went to the cross. Peter rejected him 3 times. They acted in a cowardly manner, running away to save themselves, and considering giving up when Jesus died, even though He told them what was to come. The Bible shows these men, warts and all, with nothing held back.

The Bible is so uncomplimentary towards so many in the Bible, writers and the people themselves, that I find it almost beyond comprehension that such a book would survive to be shown to billions of people in later days. It is amazing. I suppose that it's possible, but I just don't believe that.

You're handed this precious gift, right? Each one of you granted redemption from the Creator - murderers, rapists, and molesters - all of you, you just have to repent, and God takes you into His bosom. In all the worlds in all the universe, no other creature can make such a boast, save man.
