So, Bridgewater and Carr ARE franchise qb's? Is that what you're going with?

I believe this to be true...all season long on the sidelines you very rarely ever saw Manziel and Hoyer communicating...yet the season finale you saw Hoyer helping Shaw during the whole game...that caught my eye. I think Hoyer was willing to help Manziel out at one time.

I knew you would not be able to answer the questions. So, you used deception to deflect the questions. That sounds exactly like something a Pastor would do.

But yeah...........you and arch are right. Teddy and Carr are not franchise qbs, but Manziel is.

Have a nice life.

For starters, Cleveland Browns' signing of Josh McCown isn't the answer -- Bud Shaw's Sports Spin

By Bud Shaw, Northeast Ohio Media Group
February 27, 2015

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If Josh McCown is the answer, we may need to review the question.

Unless the one on everybody's mind was whether it's possible to go 1-10 and two months later be the subject of a bidding war. Bingo. McCown proved it could happen.

Then again, if it's the Bills and Browns doing the bidding, "war" isn't the right word.

Back to the other questions raised by the Browns' latest quarterback acquisition:

Is McCown an improvement over Brian Hoyer? Impossible to see how. Is this Plan A? Move along, nothing else to see here?

Not Sam Bradford coming in a trade? Not a leveraged move to get Hoyer at a cheaper price? Not a big move to the top of the April draft? Is this all there is? Better hope not.

Is McCown more attractive because he's willing to mentor young quarterbacks while Hoyer and whomever else -- Jake Locker, Mark Sanchez -- would want to start?

God help all Browns fans if that's the case.

The criteria for bringing any quarterback to Berea in 2015 can't possibly center around his willingness to step aside for younger talent. This move better not be about that. The only worse reason would be to say McCown looks good in Pantone 2028 C.

It's just not possible the Browns made this decision with Johnny Manziel in mind. I refuse to believe it given what they saw of him on the field and what he's dealing with personally.

A mentor would make some sense if the plan were to trade up for Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota. If that's not in the offing -- and it's so expensive that it shouldn't be -- why would mentoring factor in when the two players behind him are weak-armed, undrafted Connor Shaw and the rehabbing Manziel?

My take on Hoyer and the Browns is the feelings were mutual about his return in 2015. He had good reason to want some assurance he'd be given first crack at starting. Even more than he'd have the support of a front office that didn't believe in him last year even before his late-season tailspin.

He would have to do some serious discovery to make sure the Browns weren't ready to once again prop up Manziel, especially after hearing Ray Farmer and Jimmy Haslam each talk up Manziel as a future "solid" starter.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trotting out Hoyer as the long term answer either. Just saying given the talent pool on the free agent market -- McCown included -- that bringing him back until you found what you were looking for made sense given his relative success, and his already established relationships in the locker room and in the passing game.

The Browns clearly weren't in a rush to meet with Hoyer, who finished 7-6 a year ago and helped win 10 games over two seasons. Why? That's a question for them, not for him.

That's a question that wasn't answered before the Browns signed Josh McCown.

And it only screams louder for an answer now that they have.

at least hoyer would have had some existing chemistry with our existing WR and offense. I would not be surprised to see us moving up for a QB now.

We wont be trading up for a QB. They didnt spend a first on Johnny make a plan to let him sit for a year and then give up after 7 quarters of football ina ail marry attempt to save the season. McCown is hear to help Johnny get ready. Haslam and Farmer want him to succeed and have done everything they can to make sure he does.

Sadly, that's what I was talking about (in this thread, or a different one, I don't remember), continuity.

We have none.

New qb every year, new coaching staff every 2 1/2 years.

If they get rid of Pett after what is now looking to be an abysmal next season, ............

It has been FIFTY years since the Cleveland Browns have won ANYTHING. FIFTY YEARS. Let that sink in. A wasted LIFETIME for many of us.

I talk about that sig. I am a pretty stout Browns fan. I hold season tickets and live 600 miles away. I usually attend 6 games a year. I was a teenager in 1964.....just driving, or just short, but my lifetime hasn't been wasted because the Browns haven't won since then.

I completed my education. Had a great family, career, traveled a good deal, had a lot of laughs, met some great people and found 2-3 lifetime friends..

Nope. Browns suckage doesn't define my life. A passion? No doubt. But define it? Not a chance

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

WOW! This really excites me!
The Browns give a 3 year contract to the worst FA QB available other than Hoyer. Congratulations! More of the same ole same ole. It is AMAZING how this franchise proves daily that they are establishing the WORST running of a NFL football team in history.
HELL, why not sign Mallett, Glennon, etc.......Who cares if it would cost a draft pick, we need a damn QB that has some potential. But no, they make the WORST possible decision. Why oh why do I even care anymore?...willynilly

Well here is hoping that McCown can be an upgrade over Hoyer or Manziel for that matter. As TB was not a good fit for him.

I'm Hooray for this move. Browns signed someone better than their 3rd stringer who was the starter at the end of the year.

That's all this is. Ok not quite, it's also getting the guy instead of him going to the Bills.

Mc, "C" own, Jeesh, that's going to be hard to remember, I'll always want to put a G there. There's no L in McCown.

If this move is a signpost, then that sign post, over the years has meant, " sign a player this time of FA, look for them to be more likely to draft a high pick at that same position."

But I think the bottom line is, Hoyer is FA, Manziel is in rehab, if a game were tomorrow, Who is the qb, Connor Shaw? So the legitimacy McCown gives them is something to praise Farmer for.

Hehe, How did these two not meet up before now! The Browns and Josh McCown! The Browns with their list of below avg journeyman qb's, and McCown fitting that role to a tee, how did it not happen anytime in the last 7 years. It's like Chocolate and Peanut Butter.

Hooray! Cleve-lands goin to the sup-er bowl!

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I think the Browns signed a back-up QB. Nothing more and nothing less.

McCown is ok, but his arm is limited. Defenses can figure that out. If he is a good mentor, then all the better.

Keep looking.

I have really disliked 2 players who have played for the Browns, because I thought that they were bums, while many others defended them. Those 2 players were Charlie Frye and Colt McCoy. However, I cannot ever recall calling them anything but McCoy or Frye. Did I tear apart their performances? You bet. I thought that both guys held the team back badly. However, I cannot remember calling them anything but their last names.

I can't see any reason for calling a guy who has yet to take his 1st snap for the team names ..... but I guess all I can say is, "to each their own".

I'm sorry. This post is such a ridiculous contradiction. Bridgewater and Carr showed ten times the performance Manziel did (and that's probably overly modest) and yet you are saying they aren't franchise QBs, but comparing Manziel to Favre?

We are moving much closer to the first pick in 2016 and for that this is a great move.

If Criminal Haslam fires Pettine after the season I'm done with this team for good.

i agree when you can't get your coach a QB of any kind then you have no right to fire him. Shaw is nice and all but if they are going to take a project QB at least take one who has some arm strength.

The bet was placed when Manziel was drafted Round One.

Farmer et. al. placed the bet, and after Year One of his contract it's starting to look like a lousy bet.

But I think others on line are right: with the Manziel bet already placed, everything now is being arranged to make Manziel the starter next year, not out of desire, but out of necessity.

No new QB in draft is worth it anyway, though lots of teams are desperate like the Browns for a starter. Maybe a late round QB might become the next Tom Brady, who knows??

Maybe it's a good thing that Browns use draft picks upgrading O-line and receivers this year, so that when Manziel crashes and burns, as seems likely, in 2016 we'll have a far better supporting cast for another shot at a rookie (maybe by a new GM).

Didn't see the terms posted anywhere on here.

Quote:
What’s the market for a hybrid starter/backup like QB Josh McCown? His deal is 3 years worth roughly $15M, source said. Not bad.

Link

My guess is that it is actually three one year, $5 million deals, where we can cut McCown with no cap repercussions after each season.

It will be interesting to see how much Sanchez, Locker, Hoyer, Mallett, and Hoyer get. My bet is that McCown just set the market for those guys. I bet Sanchez gets more than $5 million, while the three others get under.

Some thoughts not related to the contract details:

~ While I don't like the McCown signing I think it gives us some flexibility. We can either have McCown be the starter with Manziel learning under him, sign/trade for another veteran and have that person compete with McCown, or draft a QB and have McCown start while tutoring the rookie.

~ I don't see how Manziel can even be considered a viable option for anything more than a backup at this point. He was terrible when he did play last season, and that was with a full off-season of training on his own or with the team. While it is good that he is getting his life together, he is also missing valuable time that he could/should be dedicating to his craft.

~ Connor Shaw is also not a viable option at this point. I think he grasps the game mentally, but physically he is well below average.

~ We have to bring in at least one more QB to cover for the unknown of Manziel. We essentially have two QBs on the roster and one of them should never play under any circumstance.

It's nice the local guy had some good moments last year but his play also cost us a few games. He wasn't the long term answer and he said flat out he wanted to play where he could start. With Manziel, Shaw and most likely another young QB we'll draft Hoyer did not want to be a mentor. He wasn't going to give insights to the young guys behind him fighting for his job because he wants to keep that job. McCown is what he is and knows what he is. He can start in a pinch but they brought him in to help with the young guys. He's familiar with DeFilippo and can help the young guns get acclimated to the offense as well as aid them wherever he can. He knows he's not the long term answer and accepted that. Hoyer didn't and as great a guy as he is, he wasn't going to help someone else take his job. McCown will help mentor Manziel and whichever young QBs are on this roster. If they're not ready McCown will start. If they are, he will back them up, mentor, and make a check for 3 more years

1st i wanna say it's good to read you again peen. i've been wondering where you've been, and your answer was a lot like mine.

everybody else...

after reading the 1st couple of pages on this thread it was as I expected. every move we make in FA is expected to be brought in to start. it's to be expected around here. LOL after a few posts from ones that don't get excited as quick, the thread has pretty well evened out to the same poster war in every thread. LOL you gotta love it.
IMO we are not done at QB. i believe we may either re sign hoyer or bring in another starter vet in FA or trade. i don't even think McCown was brought in to be our #2. conner shaw may be the only one that needs to worry.
as far as the hoyer talk, he has been quoted by his agent that brian wants to talk to farmer face to face before the negotiations begin. the combine is over so we may be hearing about that very soon. whatever comes of that will determine if we proceed in finding another vet to be our starter this year.
this is my opinion..........

Right now we have Manzeil in rehab and Connor Shaw. So they sign a veteran who knows and has worked with the new OC. Why all the gloom? Do you guys actually believe they think he is a long term answer? Many who want Hoyer back, act as if this is a step backwards. IMO McCown is better than Hoyer and can help others with the offense. I don't think this is the end of the QB search.

Umm, because of your first sentence? Maybe?

Imagine ANY other NFL team investing a 1st and 3rd on a QB in the draft 10 months ago and then sign a 36yo FA, cut from the team picking 1st overall no less, for 3y and 15mil to "compete" = start, because you don't invest this much for a backup, if the QB investment was worth even that 3rd burnt to trade up. So Manziel, instead of "wrecking the league", wrecked his value faster than a Ferrari gets from 0 to 100 by being the idiot he was 20 years before that. Yeah, nobody could have seen that coming, lol

Anyway, back to imagining this were the QB transactions of ANY other NFL team, say the Raiders or Bengals. Everyone on here would either ridicule them or feel very sorry for them. Tell me with a straight face that's not the case and I'd like to hear why? And what's the difference between "that other NFL team" and the Browns? That you're a fan of one and not the other? There's your solution,

Yours truly,
Dr.Phil

I kinda find it funny that people who are so pissed off about McCown coming to Cleveland would have been damn peachy with settling with Hoyer. HAHAHA. Both of these guys are not the answer and I think some of the comments from McCown show why the Browns chose to go with him over Hoyer, most notably this quote:

Quote:
In my room, I want to be able to help those young guys and pass along my knowledge and experiences I've had and help them grow.

I don't think Hoyer was willing to do this with Manziel (just my guess). McCown is coming here to help teach young QBs- whether that is Manziel or someone else. Look, it is no surprise that Hoyer wanted to be the outright starter for a football team. It is clear that the FO does not believe Hoyer can be the answer. And I agree with them. However, McCown is definitely not the answer either. It's all about their role with other QBs that COULD be the answer. I think McCown is willing to do something that Hoyer is not; or at least the HC/FO perceived Hoyer would not.

I think it came down to finding a QB that would be willing to accept a backup role and educate younger players.

I'm not pissed at this signing because I don't think the position is done from a makeover. I do think there is a chance Farmer (who has been reported to really like this guy) pulls out all the stops to get Mariota.

I guess it boils down to this for me....Hoyer/Manziel/Shaw is basically the same thing as McCown/Manziel/Shaw. There is really no difference.....both are equally crappy QB situations to be in. Which is why I am hoping something else is still in the works.

which is exactly why i don't think we are done in our QB search. haslem has said we will leave no stone unturned.
switching out two similar vets with the same rooks at 2&3 is not an upgrade. we know this and they surely to god know this.
