May 01, 2007 Panthers cut Keyshawn Keyshawn Johnson was released by the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, leaving one of the NFL's most productive receivers looking for a third team in as many years. ""They said they wanted to get younger,'' Johnson said. ""That's fine with me. I'd like to go somewhere and help someone win another Super Bowl.'' Johnson, 34, spent the weekend working for ESPN in New York during their NFL draft coverage and will undoubtedly receive offers to work in broadcasting. But his first choice is to play another season or two. The move was somewhat surprising since the Panthers paid Johnson a $3-million roster bonus April 1. Carolina drafted Southern Cal receiver Dwayne Jarrett and also have Keary Colbert. Last season, Johnson caught 70 passes for 815 yards and four touchdowns, two of them against Tampa Bay. Johnson even joked that he would consider returning to the Bucs. ""Me and Jon Gruden together again. You never know,'' he said laughing. ""Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner did it.'' http://blogs.tampabay.com/bucs/2007/05/panther_cut_key.html

Too bad he couldn't have a better attitude. I would love to bring in another vet receiver. But not this guy.

Haha, that was my reaction to the Jarrett pick when it originally happened. I was joking that they should've asked Keyshawn "So, now that your team has drafted the player you publicly said wasn't NFL ready (a much younger version of you from the same college) and he's going to end up taking your job, how do you feel... old man?"
I thought Keyshawn was going to flip after the pick given how cocky he is, but this makes that phony, awkward talk that Keyshawn had with Jarrett about mentoring him and teaching him how to play the right way even more comical.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Meshawn has to be steaming........right when they drafted Jarrett I really wondered about this.....Even so, releasing a 70 catch player with reliable hands is always a risk.

Hmmmm...
Where could he end up?
I can't see a contender grabbing him. Maybe for the right price San Diego would consider him.
Never been a big fan of meshawn.

If I had to guess, the Vikes might take a look at him. They are in desperate shape at WR.

I must be turning into a softy, cause while never a MeShawn fan, I think he ended up cleaning up his act and having a decent comeback. He lived up to the hype more and became a great blocker later in his career. That said, he is still MeShawn and his show on Sirius NFL Radio is unbearable to listen to. Still plenty cocky. Best MeShawn moment ever: Him literally getting the snot knocked out of him as he caught a punt or kickoff. I believe it was when he was a Buc. You could see it fly out of his facemask. I watched it in a bar and everybody in the place was feeling his pain and laughing their heads off at the same time. Classic.

While I do not see it happening....Mike Tomlin was in Tampa while he was there...might help ...then again...maybe it will hurt the chances of a reunion....But with Tomlin being the DB coach...he got to see Meshawn up close an personal everyday in practice.

I agree, he would make things so much easier on whoever is playing QB another reliable set of hands would be very nice, but I bet he goes to a team like San Diego that has a chance of winning it all this year.
Although I don't think we need another egotistical player on this team.

He would be a perfect fit for the Steelers IMO. He blocks, he will catch the ball anywhere in any situation and he has a passion for the game. I wonder if Tomlin could handle him though, Keyshawn needs a strong coach. With Cowher no problems, Tomlin is a little young though and not sure how he would handle a high maintenence guy like Johnson.

j/k
I kept hearing the Packers trying to go after Moss. Maybe they would be willing to take a chance on Keyshawn to try and help Favre.
I hope not because I like the Pack but you never know.

He seemed like an alright guy on ESPN this weekend. Too bad the Panthers had to do this now...with all he said on TV about grooming the new receiver and supporting the Panthers and all. I think it makes the Panthers look foolish and not him.

MeShawn, as some of you so aptly put it, has seemed to have mellowed out over the last few years to me. Now I'm not saying he can't still be arrogant, but how many NFL wideouts outside of Marvin Harrison and Calvin Johnson aren't?
Depending on what kind of $$ he's going to want, I'd at least be on the phone with him. I think having a 4 WR combo of Edwards/Jurevicius/Johnson/Wilson with Cribbs manning the slot occasionally sounds awfully nice to me.

It'd give Braylon an old-hand type veteran that he might relate to better.... one that can also tell him that being the prima donnna doesn't get ya squat. Let BE know that if he wants to make the really BIG money, he's going to have to turn himself into the consummate professional. Then again, it could just turn into one big ole mess.

just clickin, IF we did look at him I'd only want him for a decent price and I don't see him going extremely cheap, especially to a team that probably won't be going to the Super Bowl next season, yes I mean us. I see him going to a team that is a playoff/super bowl contender. San Diego seems to be a popular name being mentioned. I'm wondering if the Saints, Falcons, or Seahawks might be interested. Maybe the Pats or Steelers but I doubt it. Now Washington might overpay...

I don't want him at all. I would like to see Joshua Cribbs get a shot to catch some passes to be honest

i'd like a little more depth at the receiver position, but not this dude...
i don't think he's as big of a jerk as people make him out to be, but i just don't think he could really help this team at all...
it seems like every year teams pick up a guy, either an undrafted free agent, or a wide receiver who got cut (not like keyshawn, but more of the unknown kind) and the guy becomes a pretty decent pickup... you saw it with the patriots, although tom brady just makes everyone look good (i'm on record saying that the moss thing is going to work out, and i think it's quite scary to think what brady can do with a legitimate superstar at the wide receiver position, i think moss comes into the season on a mission)

Keyshawn Johnson has been my favorite WR for a very long time... the Panthers are crazy for letting his talent and skill go... some team will be lucky, and look for that team to already be a threat in the league.
Im really hoping the Ravens don't go after him..

I'm telling you guys I don't know why there's all this hate for Keyshawn. I don't see him as a head case OR a cancer to the team. He's just a big bodied receiver who catches everything you throw him. Can you imagine the red-zone options we could have this year? A) pound it with Lewis behind JT/Steiny/LCB et al B) throw it up for Winslow, Jurevicius or Johnson?? Assuming he's not a hindrance to the TEAM attitude (and I don't see how he would be), we should be giving this guy a look. Of course, everything is $$ pending.

i thought he had a few more good years left in him. when he was younger and alot more mouthy (ie. throw me the damn ball) i disliked him. But in the last few years he has matured and proven to be a solid reciever wherever he goes. I hope the pariots have fun with him patriots = yankees of the NFL.

I don't get it, either. MeShawn hasn't been around for a while now. What he is, and has been for a few years, is a solid WR who blocks and has steady hands.
A lot of people on this board defend the antics of KW and Edwards by saying that they just need to mature, give them some time becuase they're young. Now we have someone who actually did mature and grow up but he's still being bashed for being a ___ when he first came into the league.

Keyshawn did clean up his act and learn when to shut his mouth, Schalerf on ESPN last night prasied Keyshawn for his work ethics and tuffness and turned around and said which is funnier than heck, "I'd love to buy Keyshawn for what he's worth, and sell him for what he thinks he's worth, I'd turn a hugh profit".....LOL...

I think this guy is better than JJ, never misses games due to injury, and is a good blocker. I'd definitely bring him in for the right price.

I agree with you Purp. JJ was brought in to help show these guys the way. That clearly did not work. I don't know if it was because JJ was not verbal enough or if BE just didn't respect him or if BE just couldn't relate. Whatever the reason Keyshawn would would clear that up. BE should be able to relate and Keyshawn has earned the right to locker room respect. I think he has really cleaned up his act. He can certainly tell BE how to clean up his act and to do it now because if he lets it go much further he will never be able to completely clear his reputation. And we all know Key will have no problem being verbal.
As along as PS were to make sure Key knew his role I think the locker room would benefit from his presence. This guy is not the same MeShawn we all knew and hated. Plus having a WR who runs good routes, has good hand, is willing to go over the middle, and blocks downfield would absolutely help on the field. When was the last WR we had that filled that description? Would help out our young QBs. And if it turns out that he can't manage that role or contribute on the field you cut him we have more than enough salary cap space to take that hit this year.

Ehh... OK. Exactly when did Meshawn mature and grow up? He got himself booted off the Bucs in his 8th season. Are you saying it was after THAT point? If so, then I think we can afford to be a little more patient with BE and KW.

I wouldn't go as far as saying he grew up, maybe you can say he has been humbled a little bit.
As of signing him to the browns , I'd have to say out of all the big mouth Wide Recievers in the NFL (Chad Johnson, T. Owens ,Moss ) etc. I would have to take Keyshon over any of them.He is a Great Posssesion Wide Reciever with good hands and will BLOCK. With Him , edwards ,J.J. Winslow thats some tall powerfull guys to catch some balls.
But i don't see him coming in here and helping win anymore games or anything like that. Just a guy to help spead the ball a lilttle more.
