I agree and I think motivation is the key word.

Now explain how some people find the motivation and others don't.

I think there are plenty of lazy people who do vote, so I don't think the reason for not voting is, as someone-I can't remember who- said is laziness.

Obama as a candidate sure did motivate a lot of voters who weren't too lazy then. The second time around, when they didn't think he was doing much for blacks, the turn out was less.

Sorry, I just don't buy into the excuse for not voting of "don't have the time, or the transportation." That excuse has never held water for me. I would guess that 99% of the people that try to use that excuse are doing just that: making an excuse.

It's the old "blame someone else" attitude. Even the elderly can get rides to the polling place. Face it, it's a once every 2 years kind of deal, right?

Yet the others (elderly pretty much included) can go get groceries, or go to a movie, or to the gas station, or a friends house, or a restaurant, etc.

I would guess a good percentage of those that were rioting were also among those that never voted. So, they can riot, run around, loot......but they can't take 5 minutes up to an hour to cast a vote?

I don't buy it. Victim mentality. It's easier that way, right?

I just disagree with connecting riots with voting.

I honestly think it's deeper and has less to do with laziness than you do, but that's ok.

Voting demonstrates a responsibility. Those denegrating Ferguson demonstrated very, very little if any responsibility. And they, most likely, will never be held accountable for their actions.

Why is it so hard for some to accept that some people are just irresponsible, apathetic and lazy? For some, it is just who they are.

I was not trying to connect riots with voting. What I WAS trying to say is I bet many of those that rioted also did not vote, so the whole "can't vote because of time or transportation" issues is moot.

Some people possess empathy. That's how people avoid putting a blanket statement over multiple individuals.

There will always be a segment of our population that wants to blame others and do nothing. There will always be those individuals who will be part of the problem while ignoring the possible solutions. It's a fact of belonging to the human race.

yes, I can blame them for not voting. As I think Arch said, those are the VERY REASONS they should vote.

Exactly 40. I have lived long enough to know the statement is absolutely correct and way beyond disputable. Those who do not accept that some folks are unmotivated and irresponsible are usually those who are too busy making excuses to see the reality of the situation.

Ughh....where did I say ALL Ferguson residents? I would like to see that statement. And empathy, oh well.....you will most likely not find a more empathetic individual. But you will never know that. So please do not pass judgement about character. I just happen to live in reality.

this conversation has turned pathetic.

Leave it to the usual two to talk about people being lazy and entitled. then 40 talking about "in other countries", like that matters, at all.

Thats why rarely bother any more on this board. I already know the responses.

This conversation wouldn't get very far if we had to list the individuals who didn't vote, the individuals who rioted, the individuals who steal from convenience stores... so can we please just understand that's who we are talking about and I'm sure not all of Ferguson is like that but do we have to disclaim every post?

I sincerely hope you aren't talking about me as one of those "usual 2....". If you are, fine I guess.

However, the topic swung just a bit when rocket said this:

"Can you really blame them for not voting? African Americans, as well as minorities as a whole, have lived through broken promises. Continually segregated schools, lowest rate of social mobility among developed nations, and police brutality do nothing but reinforce nothing will ever change."

In reading that, it gave me the impression rocket was saying "hey, don't blame them. The world is against them and they have no means to change it." And that's a crock.

Making excuses is weakening those excuse makers. It's giving them an easy "out"...."not my fault, it's the man".

of course there are. But when we talk about minorities specifically on this board, that seems to be a very common theme that you and others like to throw out there.

DC posted something about why there was only so many who came out to vote, specifically because there was only 3 candidates, and all 3 were white.

I think it was only you that responded to that, and it went something along the lines of "well why didn't they get a black candidate in there".

Now, I'm no expert in politics, but It seems to be over the years that running for any office usually requires a boat load of money.

I don't see a city like Ferguson having someone thats a minority with that kind of cash.

On top of that, 3 white candidates, and all the agencies like FPD and such are mainly white. Something just smells fishy about that. Then add in the fact that this same police department had MRAP's, and I'm starting to think that there's a level of corruption going on.

But thats my weed-headed brain talking.

My sober side thinks it won't change in that city. Taking away the tin foil hat, If all i got is 3 white candidates to chose from, and none of them represent my interest, then.......

WHATS THE POINT OF VOTING?

Think about that Cjrae. If 2016 rolls along and neither republican nor democrats have ANYBODY worth voting for in the presidency, they both suck, why bother?

If ever there was a time in Ferguson's history that saw the city ripe for change, it's RIGHT NOW. A sincere, dedicated and charismatic "candidate of color" could potentially sweep into office in the same way Obama did in 2008. I believe he or she would literally SMASH the old establishment, so long as there was real grassroots support from a 'get out the vote' team.

However... a lone newly-minted mayor of Ferguson would not be enough to effect a true culture change in a town so entrenched. It would also take fresh blood on the city council, citizen participation on the street level, and a willingness to 'duke it out' with the old guard for years ongoing. Power and control is never ceded willingly.

This would be a long uphill battle, but it's a battle that could (and should) be won. First, it will take that one special person to put the whole thing in motion.

Until the people of Ferguson realize that they alone hold the power of self-determination in their hands (and in the voting booths), nothing will change. I hope someone sees this time as an opportunity instead of just another example of hopelessness and helplessness. The first person to do this could potentially make history (the good kind) in this town.

I believe that the whole issue has become politicized. You are correct in stating that Ferguson, Missouri is a majority black community with a slightly below average household income, mostly female, mostly young with a high school education. Most High School educations are not what they used to be. I would guess that the school system in Ferguson is not in the top 10% of Missouri.

The issue in Ferguson is undereducated, working poor/working lower class, young. I would not be surprised to hear that the economy in Ferguson has not rebounded a bit since 2009.

I feel for the officer who was wrongly made a villain in a political race game. How does he get his reputation back now? Would you hire him if you were a police force? I would like to see justice for the police officer and the people victimized by the riots and protests... the shop owners, the workers, the police officers, the city government.

I think the lesson to be learned from Ferguson, Missouri is not that there are race issues in America. It is that race is often brought into a debate when the underlying truth is ugly such as incompetency in government, race hustling for money and/or influence, public policies that only make things worse such as Section 8 housing, and education failures.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, social programs significantly raise the standard of living for low-income Americans, particularly the elderly. The poorest 20% of American households earn a before-tax average of only $7,600 - less than half of the federal poverty line. Social programs increase those households' before-tax income to $30,500. Social Security and Medicare are responsible for two-thirds of that increase.[24]

I don't think running for mayor of a town of 20,000 people requires a boat load of money. It's not like you have to buy TV spots or anything. Heck, mayor of Ferguson isn't even a full time job.

Another guess on my part... white mayor, white council... feel more comfortable with white people in charge of the PD and FD... now before somebody says thats racist, the whole point of this discussion is that the black citizens should vote for and feel more comfortable with black people in office.... so they hire white guys to run the PD and FD, he hires white people to staff the positions, etc...

Come on swish - it doesn't take a boatload of money to run for town/city council. Not here, not in Ferguson.

Sure, it takes some printing costs (hey, bet there's a printing company that would donate that for a few mentions - or at least drop the price).

Or, if someone is serious - walk around, talk to citizens. Tell them your desires........word spreads.

Look, we're not talking about being the president here. We're not talking about the fed. senate or HOR. (those take money - real money). Plus, in a town/city that is 70% black....geesh, seems like a black person, had they put their name on the ballot, it seems like they'd have a darn good chance of being elected - doesn't it?

No, I won't accept excuses for people not voting in a town council election/city council election. That is simply tossing the blame on someone else in order to make someone say "golly........the man has me down and I can't get up."

MRAP's? Didn't many municipalities get them? Funded by the federal gov't./homeland security department?

What's the point of voting??????????? Vote for someone that represents YOU, and quit sitting back and crying "I'm a minority, I don't matter." If someone that represents YOU doesn't run, get active - find someone. Sitting on your butt (not you specifically, are we clear on that?) but sitting on your butt and blaming...dang, that's the lazy way.

What does that have to do with anything? Seriously. I don't give a damn what people from other countries think about our poor here in the US. That has absolutely zero relevance.

Bro if there's nobody to vote for that represents your views, minority or not, WHY VOTE?

to you and DC: It doesn't matter if the cost is low to run or not, those people are still poor, so any extra money for something like that can not be afforded. Just because it's the lowest level of government doesn't mean it isn't still riddled with corruption. For all we know, the people in charge could have the system rigged to keep the status quo going.

and to drive home my point. Cleveland doesn't even have MRAP's if i'm correct. yet a town like Ferguson does? And you don't see how that could be an issue? You only get those vehicles if you request it. homeland security doesn't just give them to you just because.

At this point, take minority out of it, they STILL don't have anybody running that represents their views.

you make it more and more clear that you have no idea what poor people go through. You realize some people make just enough that they can't qualify for social programs, and have to live off way less than 30k right?

Why am I bothering? you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

So instead of changing that, it's easier to just piss and moan and blame others, right?

Was that MRAP owned by Ferguson? Or was it brought in due to the looting and rioting? I don't know, do you?

So instead of changing that, it's easier to just piss and moan and blame others, right?

Was that MRAP owned by Ferguson? Or was it brought in due to the looting and rioting? I don't know, do you?

I don't. But when you do some research, and see that a lot of these little towns have MRAP's and NOTHING has gone on seriously, it makes you think.

So how do they change it? Enlighten us.

How does Ferguson change? Have someone that represents you run for office. Simple. Voters decide who serves. Sitting on your butt saying "why vote" is nothing but an excuse. Period.

I don't know of any little towns that have mraps.....can you link to any?

It's giving them an easy "out"...."not my fault, it's the man".

yes, I absolutely meant you. definitely. no purple font.

you and Cjrae have been going in on this topic about lazy and unmotivated, see my response to her about that above.

Yup! Livin in the real world called REALITY, human nature is just that, human nature

I'll leave it at this:

You only know what you've experienced.

You are right about that. I would still take the time to vote after researching the candidates and selecting the one who most closely aligns with my values. It is my civic responsibilitymto do so. Just like the Ferguson residents.

I referred to "the residents of Ferguson"" not any specific group. Don't put words in my mouth and take time to see beyond your own bias and recognize the words for what they are. Very rarely will I ever single out a specific minoriity group based upon ethnicity or color of skin and I challenge you to point it out in this thread. Sorry if there is a preconceived idea within your thought.

Thanks for taking part in this conversation. It is by no means pathetic and actually necessary for change.
