pair him with Andre Johnson and I'd be happy.

I see zero chance the Browns go after Johnson or him willing to sign here. He's made his dough and will have other suitors. I believe, at this point in his career he's considering his legacy and will choose to sign with a team that is a winner and gives him a good shot at a SB ring.

I am extremely pleased with this signing. Many people wanted Shorts, but Hartline was the guy I was hoping for all along. I also hoped we could grab Cobb from the Packers, but he decided to re-sign with them for some reason. I cannot imagine why ...... crazy wink lol

Well I heard this morning it was down to Pats vs Browns and it was looking like the Browns had him. smile I dont care where he went to school when we beat out the Pats for anyone its a good day lol.

I think the guy is a fantastic #2 receiver. The focus went away from Hartline last year but this is a 1000 yard receiver. He is the man that got the attention from defenders. This was the receiver I wanted beyond all others not named Cobb, I was really ticked he didnt sign with us a few days ago but man this was a good haul for the Browns. He is in my opinion a little quicker version of Joe J.

Still need that #1 and the draft is where I would look for that.

J/C..

I'm not sure why all the glory holy excitement over a # 2 receiver when we had 7 wins with the ones we already had...

Yet all the doom and gloom over the signing of McCown...

just scratching my head thinking out loud... not being negative at all... just trying to figure out the Hartline McCown connection at the moment...

I keep telling myself what PIT says.... And I hope for it... This may
not be whats on the field come September.

Years of wishful thinking has me drinking...

At some point in time, you would like a roster that has some established NFL players on it.

The WR group, sans the disfunctional Gordon, was in need of help. Hartline is an improvement, The best receiver for the team (Hawkins) was signed last year.

The negative Nellies will always complain. I choose to ignore them. At face value, it is better than an unproven rookie, and he is established.

Not being a negative nelly.. but I do have to ask a question here...

I believe the Browns want to be a run type offense.. says the OC...

And by the signing of McCowen.. it looks like they don't feel like they need a passer type QB...Because of the establishing of the run game.

So why invest in a #2 WR when we have a team full of #2's ?

Why aren't they signing O-line guys..To build up that run game O line ?

Maybe because the FA starts at 5:00 Tuesday evening and the draft is still weeks ahead....

and they sign guys like Hartline who is said to sign a below avg. contract for propaganda purposes...to make it look like guys really want to come here... Hell who knows

Hartline and McCown so far... name worthy

I don't think we really have any #2's at this time other than Hartline. Hawk is a slot guy, Gabriel's a #3 at this point and Benjamin is more of a #4.

Austin was the closest wr we had to a #2.

Hopefully that would mean the end of Benjamin on this team. Dude is worthless. Not a good route runner, and a liability on special teams.

I don't see a team full of #2's

As others have said, Hawkins is a legitimate slot. Austin, well I am not sold on him going forward.

Benjamin is just not that reliable, and rarely catches anything contested or inside the hashes. He really is a bit one dimensional.

Other than that.... sheesh... We both know that Farmer's biggest miss was not fixing this issue when it was known and obvious.

I see the signing as part of a fix.

Marlon Moore might be the one to go.

Pettine had an interview on Cleveland Browns Daily after the season concluded and was asked to name a play or two that really stuck out to him that defined the 'Play Like a Brown' mantra and without hesitation he mentioned Travis Benjamin and his hustle play against Carolina.

He's not a star by any means, but from all accounts Benjamin is a guy that could stick around, at least through his rookie contract.

Here's the play if anyone forgets...

Perfect fit for the WCO, along with Cecil Shorts *who I hope will be a Browns shortly after 4:00 pm...today I guess now.*

This team is going to go the route of Seattle and others where they won't destroy you deep, but they can move the ball through the air.

you had a good run Hank.

I think if we are really going old school, then having hartline and cecil on the outsides isn't gonna keep us from winning games. Hartline is productive, so is cecil. and cecil was putting up numbers without blackmon lined up on the other side.

Combine that with hawk and gabriel as slot guys, i think we would be good, honestly. at the very least, Hartline has size that defense have to respect.

I agree, I really want Shorts. I think he's an excellent WR who will produce more than he'll get paid for.

Very glad to hear last night that we signed Hartline.

I think he can step in and be our #2 wide-receiver right away for the next couple of years and can be productive.

Hopefully we can sign Cecil Shorts and a good defensive tackle today or tomorrow.

I'm thinking Joe Haden would agree - ouch. I had it in my head that he's more of a possession guy, but I've only seen him play once. Any scouting reports from the Purple Raider DT'ers?

So as of now our WRs are:

Hawkins
Gabriel
Hartline
Benjamin
Moore

Is there anyone else of note? I know we have some PS and camp fodder, but nothing substantial.

Let's just ASSume we can sign Shorts, would we be satisfied with this WR corp:

Shorts
Hartline
Hawkins
Gabriel
Benjamin
ROOKIE WR

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

My guess is we still draft a wide receiver somewhere between rounds 2 and 4. Still need to bring in another guy for depth and to groom.

Moore and Benjamin I don't even really count as receivers. Neither of them are very good at WR, just as returners. Moore is a free agent also FYI.

I'd love to get DeVante Parker in the draft and let him learn behind guys like Shorts and Hartline instead of rushing him into the #1 spot.

I already posted my opinion on this, but will say it again: Heck yeah, I'd be fine with it! Personally I think that would be a great group of team oriented guys with good route running and hands. You can win with that, just look at the Pats.

This is impossible, Hartline doesn't like it here and thinks the organization is dysfunctional.

Even with Shorts & Hartline we still need a true blue #1 wide-receiver.

If Amari Cooper or Kevin White are on the board at #12 I think Farmer would have to seriously consider drafting him, especially after passing on Watkins last year.

I still think about how much Watkins could have helped us out last year....

Why? What does that even mean? Did Seattle have a #1 WR? NE? There's was a TE, unless you want to count Edleman..

Being a physical freak is cool, but if you can't run great routes, and catch the ball consistently.. you end up out of the league (Sup Braylon?)

We gotncomparable production, smaller sample size, from a UDFA, Watkins doesn't get us over 7 wins, and costs us being able to have the flexibility we do this year..

And hell, the top 3 WRs this year are IMO 10 times better than Watkins..

Decent signing, I agree. And I happen to like his play. And not a suspend able head issue.

Welcome aboard, Buck-o! Play your guts out. Good luck!

I hope we scoop up some wideouts in the draft. Maybe rounds 2 and 3. Think help will still be available that deep?

He really is. He'd be the best WR on the team and top target for whoever is at QB. Is he elite like Dez Bryant or AJ Green? No. But, is he good enough to be the top target on a team and be very productive? Yes. A #1 WR doesn't necessarily mean an elite one. There are only a few of those.

I don't think a team NEEDS a #1 WR. Just like a team doesn't NEED a premier RB to win either.

If you have an O-line that opens holes to run through and gives the QB time to throw, you can have a bunch of 2nd tier RBs and WRs and do just fine. Yes, the QB matters too (just a little bit).

I'd rather they use the two first rounders on the finding a true dominant pass rushing DE and shoring up the O-line (once we lost Mack, the season was lost).
