Browns to cut lineman Andruzzi
Posted by Mary Kay Cabot May 02, 2007 12:00PM

Browns starting left guard Joe Andruzzi will be cut today, a source close to the Browns said.

Andruzzi, who was set to make $1.5 million this season and is signed through 2008, has been the Browns starting left guard since he was signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Patriots in 2005. Andruzzi, a 10-year pro, was a favorite of coach Romeo Crennel's both on and off the field because of his great attitude and work ethic.

Andruzzi, who battled through a knee injury last season, became expendable because the Browns signed guard Eric Steinbach and Seth McKinney in free agency. They also have second-year pro Isaac Sowells competing for a job.

Andruzzi was originally signed by the Browns to a four-year deal worth $9 million in 2005.

He's definately over the hill, i think he should just hang it up, unless he can get a cushy back-up spot somewhere

I see Sowell's name mentioned. Is there any real chance he has made enough offseason strides to compete?

Anyone see this as an indication that Tucker may move in to RG and Shaffer to RT, with Thomas as LT, Steinbach at LG and Fraley at C? Maybe leaving Tucker and putting McKinney at G?

There are a lot of possibilities.

I would offer him a coaching job if he doesnt get picked up by someone.
We always knew he was a stop gap. Thanks Druzzi

Thank God! He sucked, glad he is gone, our O-line is better for it.

What it means is this,Andruzzi is not worth $1.8mil.With Stieny,Mckinney,Matua,Smith, and Sowells competing for two guard spots,Andruzzi's $1.8 is too much.Whether,or not,LCB returns will have little bearing on the guards. He was brought here to face off against Hampton and Gregg/Ngata,not play guard.

HUH?
Releasing Druzzi has nothing to do with Bentley.
Nothing whatsoever.

We have a big time LG now..we have backups..we have people to handle RG..
Druzzi 's body is wearing down and his blocking is not a factor...the Browns have younger more physical players to use.

It could mean tha Sowells is indeed picking it up. How cool would that be if that pick ended up being decent? I'm hoping that is what this means...or they think McKinney is totally healed and an upgrade??

Probably just means that Joe is old and busted and/or his contract is too pricey. They haven't even had a minicamp yet to get much of an idea about how the others guys are coming along.

Good move. I liked 'Druzzi a lot (seemed like a great guy when I saw in camp), but he was a real liability last year and it is time to move along.

It is possible that some day we can look back on this day and see it as a milestone in the progress of the Browns. Joe was a cornerstone of the line and his expendability indicates the team is getting better, with or without Bentley. We ARE getting better

That is an interesting way to look at it.

One of the next large milstones has to be Andra Davis. When we let him go, it'll be a sign that we'll have a much-improved D to go along with this much-improved (on paper) OL.

Joe did provide some veteran leadership and a great work ethic when we needed it most in 05. IF our youth are developing,Joe may have played a part in that. I wish him well with his future and thank him for his time and effort here.

I'd like to see the Browns ask him to come back as assistant offensive line coach if he isn't able to get a contract to play any longer.

You're in luck, Andre Davis has been gone for a few years now

I'm assuming you meant Andra Davis.

I liked what Joe brought to the table off the field, although on the field he was unable to compete.

IMO i'd like to see him sign a one day contract with New England and retire a Patriot, it would be a nice end for him.

Funny how 85% of this board was elated when Andruzzi signed 2 years ago cause he started for a Super Bowl team.
Now 85% can't wait to see him leave Berea.
Joe Andruzzi should just hang his cleats up and call it a day. He should have retired 2 years ago.

Funny how some people can't grasp the TERRIBLE talent,or lack there of,we had when Druzzi was "welcomed". And it's odd that those same 15% don't quite grasp how we needed strong veteran leadership and a good strong work ethic among our players and that "team concept" instilled in our younger players when we welcomed Druzzi.

And that same 15% that didn't grasp the concept of why he was welcomed.probably don't grasp this concept either. But you'll have that from time to time on message boards.

I believe Joe gave everything he had while he was here. While Joe may not deserve 1.8 million to suit up for the Browns anymore, he deserves better than what some posters posted here . Solid citizen who brought no shame, and played the game, the way real fans appreciate.

Joe, good luck and thanks for your efforts.

Joe was certainly an upgrade at the time who toughed it out with class. Given the injuries and our newfound depth on the inside, though, it's time for him to go. Thanks Joe.

One the weaker spots on our OL this past season.............many thought he was a great pick-up including myself when we got him.......sometimes you just never know!

I do not see him going to another team and being a good lineman................his days are over and that is why he is walking!

Just showing frustration...........we just have not ever had a good OL............well since when!

Not that I really care about Druzzi, but this is what happens when you tie up millions in 2 players(Steinbach and Thomas). You can't have too many more veteran players.

Each position or unit has a budget......you can't tie up 45% of your cap on the offensive line.

Face it....in the scheme of a teams pay scale, O line is a fairly low paid unit. You can't have 3-4 guys making 6 mil a year.

It just doesn't work.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Could be, but more than likely there isn't anything more to it than it's the end of Druzzi's career due to injury and age....
