does anyone know of a player who has actually come back at all from tearing a patellar tendon? I was in the orthotic industry for a few years, and know that the patellar tendon is much more serious of a tear than an ACL. I also remember that Eagles WR who tore both of his (can't remember the name), and I don't recollect him ever playing again. Now, I ask this simply because I see posters saying LCB is coming back or hopefully coming back, but I have serious doubts that a man his size, whose job it is is to basically do explosive squats (as in the second half of the classic weightlifting move) can do this on a repaired tendon that is the only way to straighten (or, extend) the lower leg from an acute angle. Belie ve me, I hope I'm wrong, and will happily eat crow if he does, but I'm just curious if any of you have heard of such a return.

keep in mind, when some of the posters are saying he's coming back, it's only because he was quoted in an article in the Plain Dealer as saying he'd be back if it's determined he doesn't need more surgery..
To date, I haven't heard of him having to have that additional surgery.
Still, I don't know if he can come back this year or ever for that matter. But if you look at it, the Browns aren't acting as if he'll be back either. They seem to be moving on as if he's done for at least this year if not forever.
So basically, doesn't sound like something to worry about at this point.. if he makes it back,, Yee Haa.. if not, we are where we are!

i will never give up hope that that man will play for the Browns. it was one of my happiest days as a Brownie when we signed him, and i refuse to accept that he will not snap the ball to our new QB in the not so distant future, whether it's this season, the next, or the one after that.

Well WR Germane Crowel tore his patella tendon in the fifth game of 2001 (10/21/2001) and was back playing a year later (10/20/2002) Injury Story 2002 Game Log
RB Correll Buckhalter missed two seasons after tearing his patella tendon during a preseason game in 2004 (Injury Story) he returned to action last year and played in all 16 games (Career Stats). It should be noted that he tore his ACL in 2002, missing that season, and has missed 3 full seasons due to knee injuries but still played again.
There are two examples after a quick search of nfl.com there are other examples but those should be enough for your "doubts"
Oh, and Mike Flanagan, a pro-bowl center, had his patella tendon surgically repaired in 2004 and returned the following year. His surgery was to prevent a rupture though and was needed due to patellar tendenitis.
It should also be noted that the questions about Bentley playing again have more to do with the onset of a serious staph infection after the surgery than with the injury itself.

Baxter tore both, and from the sounds of it may make some history and play this season. He's off crutches, walking without a limp and I think has started to run. But we got Eazy-E in the 2nd this year, so we may not need him quite as urgently.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't have the 2 to 3 hours a day I used to to immerse myself in this big beautiful message board so I'm not nearly as up to speed as I would like. I keep seeing people posting Bentley will be back. Didn't know if there was any news on the situation. Looks like people are one of three groups. 1. Back this year 2. Back next year 3. Back never
I highly doubt he's coming back this year. I just don't see it happening. But who am I. I'm making a guess like pretty much everyone else. But I also don't see him never playing again. ACL tear was a career ender back in the day. Now it's an almost standard recovery (albeit a long one) Modern medicine gets better every day. I just can't fathom the idea that Bentley is done for good. Let's hope!

I had a staff infection 2 yrs post op ad it wasn't fun, however, I did recover.
It took six weeks of intervenous antibiotics every four hours to kill the infection

Medically we are making advances...incredible advances especially over the last 5 years. This would include the Patella Tendon. Its hard to go by a data base that simply doesn't exist.
But lets take the Saint for example. Their RT sat out the entire 05 season cause he ruptured his Patella Tendon in Training camp...not quite as early as Bentley. He had his surgery and rehab and played every game at RT for the Playoff bound Saints.
He was their 2nd round investment of several years ago Stinchbomb...something like that.
So there is an example of a clean recovery.
I'm not sure how common the injury is.
Btw the WR with both I believe was with the Bears...not positive and he tried a comeback after 2 years of rehab and didn't make it. That was the kid with two torn Patella's.
From what I hear about Baxter...he is experiencing a modern day Miracle as we speak... 
Right now we aren't relying on either to help us. We haven't cut ties with either also so we have hope and the Browns are a class act...Randy is pretty good with that. We will continue to pay these gentlemen and give them a chance to recover.
Both want to very badly. It will be the turning around of all bad things to this franchise. Players coming back to produce. KW2, BE and hopefully soon Bentley and Baxter.

Again I'm not guaranteeing anything but "sources" from Columbus say we will be pleasantly surprised with how soon we will be seeing LCB on the field. From what I've heard the tendon injury has been healed for some while and it was just a matter of getting stronger and recovering from the staph infection. Hope to see you soon LeCharles!

I think there's a very good chance that he'll play again, and I think there's probably a decent chance that he will be a good player.
I'm very confident though in saying that after the injury and the staph infection, that he won't ever be the same player that he was or he could have been. I hope I am wrong.
