The NFL is a funny league. Any team can go from the "outhouse to the penthouse" in a years time. With that said, the Browns could be a playoff team in 2007. For the 1st time in along time, the roster is filled with players who could start for other NFL teams and play at a high level.
Football abeit a team game of 33 players(offense, defense, special teams) on the field, theres a handful that could determine if the Browns go 10-6 or 6-10.
In closing, come up with a list of 5 players who are "X-factors" in the upcoming 2007 season.

1. Joe Thomas. He could be this years Marcus McNeil. He's the difference between a 10 yard completion or a 10 yard sack.He needs to be better than good.

2. Jamal Lewis. He's needs to stay healthy. He is the Browns running game.

3. Travis Wilson. He needs to step up so defenses won't bracket Braylon so much. For your offense to hum,you need another WR to make plays. The so called proclaimed "best WR of the 2006 Draft" has to back his talk up.

4. Leon Williams. We know what Kamerion Wimbley can do. Leon Williams ended 2006 on a strong note. He has to make sure those 3 yard runs don't turn into 15 yard gains.

5. Shaun Smith. If his does his job, then the Browns LB's can fill the holes and do theirs.

Here's the 5 guys that will determine if we can make a playoff run...

1. Joe Thomas
2. Brady Quinn/Charlie Frye (Most likely Quinn)
3. Kamerion Wimbley
4. Jamal Lewis
5. Leigh Bodden

1. Kevin Shaffer- You are only as good as your weakest link...and right now he is our weakest link on the line. If he plays above average, we will have a productive offense.

2. Charlie Frye- I believe *because he should be* that he will be the starter at the beginning of the year. If he is able to be productive, we will win.

3. Jamal Lewis- We agree Impact, if he doesn't run well, we have no running game. And if we don't have a running game, we don't control anything. He needs to have a typical Lewis kind of year.

4. Eric Wright- He will probably be the starter on the other side of Bodden. He is going to have to play up to his potential and stay out of trouble. If he stays out of trouble, we could be looking at one possible ROYD canidate for us.

5 The Smiths- Look I know this is two people...but if the Smiths don't play well, we have 0 chance of stopping the run. Washington can't play every game, and by the end of the year I'm hoping Shaun will be starting at the NT. Robaire is going to have to stout, or we are done. Roye is still productive...but he is STILL aging, and hopefully these two can take a large load off of him.

you had a good run Hank.

I'm surprised no one is talking DQ or Dra. I think those guys are very very important.

Dra needs to get stronger in his overall play, and DQ needs to continue to progress and be the force we saw in a couple games.

Also, Brodney Pool, this year's starter at safety needs to fill the void left by Russell, which brings me to

Sean Jones. While he played very very well, with russell gone, he needs to become the head coach of the defense/secondary like russell was, there was a difference when russell was out, and we need jones to make that difference minimal if not a strength.

Daven Holly. Someone needs to step up and make the other corner a strength. Right now the start is Daven, he looked good for a first year player, but this year he needs to play at starter level. Bodden isnt off the hook either, he needs to stay healthy and play as well as we know he can.

Those guys are the most important on D right now.

To tell you the truth I can't really break it down into just 5 players.

The WHOLE offensive line needs to gel or Lewis is going to struggle and whoever starts at QB.

Our WHOLE defensive line needs to step up or else we won't be able to stop the run or establish a pass rush. That alone is going to affect our LB play.

There are alot of questions in our secondary with Pool starting for the first time in his career at FS and a rookie in Wright possibly starting opposite Bodden.

This team has alot of new faces, if we are going to succeed they have to gel quick and are going to have to have an injury free, very productive training camp and pre-season or else we aren't going to win many games this year because our schedule isn't very forgiving playing in the AFC North.

don't mean to sound down on the team but alot of failure can be considered a domino effect given a weak unit.

Now if one side of the ball was established it would be a differetn story. The Colts couldn't stop the run for crap last year but they didn't have to because they could just out-score everyone.

Joe Thomas - If Thomas struggles as a rookie, it's going to make things very hard on our offense, especially if we trade or release Shaffer. We need his transition to be as smooth as possible.

Jamal Lewis - Lewis is our only legitimate option at RB. If he repeats his performance last year or goes down with an injury, the team doesn't do anything next year. We're only going to be as good as our running game will carry us.

Brady Quinn - I can't think for a second that Frye will be the starter all year by holding Quinn off. Since Quinn will be starting at some point, if he doesn't immediately step up, we could be in for an ugly start until he gets adjusted.

Eric Wright - We're going to be starting him at corner because he's a better option than Holly, but if he makes a ton of rookie mistakes and is beaten deep, we don't have another option.

Robaire Smith - Stopping the run is something that MUST be done if we're going to win games, and Smith is the newest starter on our defensive front. If he fails to provide an improvement to McKinley, then we're putting out the same caliber up front, and that's a very bad thing.

My Fav Five:

1) Joe Thomas
2) Eric Steinbach
3) Hank Fraley
4) Tucker
5) Kevin Shaffer

Those are the five players who will determine how far the Browns will go... or whoever else starts on the o-line.... like people have been saying.. the game is won in the trenches...

Savage said it himself, that there were games that the Browns were winning, but b/c/ they couldn't run, and control the clock, they ended up losing the game.

Offensive line is key...

Hey, good thread topic! Hmmm, lemme see...

1. Charlie Frye - How well he does in training camp and then on into the season will determine whether or not BQ has to come in before he should. I hope that having Joey T. will give Frye all the confidence and determination in the world to play the best he possibly can. And the longer BQ can sit and learn, the better off we will be. JMHO.

2. Ryan Tucker - His health really determines a lot along the right side of our line. If he's healthy, great. We have something that we haven't had in a long time regarding our offensive line: OPTIONS.

3. Jamal Lewis - It appears he's going to be our true workhorse this season with no proven change-of-pace back as of yet. Hopefully, someone will emerge as a clear-cut candidate to be that guy throughout training camp. But for now, Lewis is it and we desperately need him to return to form. Off-season surgery to remove bone chips, the emergence of our passing game and the acquisitions we've made along the o-line should bolster his production.

4. Leigh Bodden - If he's healthy, then Holly and Wright can duke it out for the #2 spot and the nickel shouldn't be a problem to fill. If he's not healthy, everyone is going to have to step up their game to fill the needs in the secondary. Thankfully, we seem to have a great coaching staff back there and just maybe we'll get a little surprise from good 'ol #23.

5. Braylon Edwards - Quite simply, he has got to be the guy we drafted him to be this year. If he is, then our entire offense will take off because of the way we can keep defenses on their heels. If he isn't, then we are very, very limited having virtually no deep threat nor big play potential. Kellen is capable but let us not forget that he was drafted to be a tight end, not a wide out.

Obviously, it can't go without saying that there are other players in addition to these 5 that need to play solid. I left out a lot on defense but clearly our most glaring needs of improvement have to be on the offensive side of the ball. If we can get some things going this year and have a bit of good fortune for a change, we can really be good. Just imagine how many games we could have won in the past two seasons if we only had an offense that was somewhat capable of moving the ball down the field.

Romeo Crennel- If Romeo can devote his life to the defense and stay the hell away from the offense, this team might have a chance. I dont believe he can lead his own coaching staff so leading this team seems a bit of a stretch.

Jamal Lewis- team will only go as far as he can carry them

Leigh Bodden- Healthy Bodden is one of the best players on defense. If he isnt playing the secondary is screwed.

Brodney Pool We invested a high 2nd on this kid and its time for him to show that he can be an NFL performer. We also allowed Russell to walk.

Braylon Edwards- Its his 3rd year, this should be the year where the great receivers show their greatness. I put him in the same category as Romeo, hope for the best but expecting the worst.

If Jamal Lewis and our nose tackles play good then we'll win some games. You gotta be able to control the line of scrimmage to be good in this league.

I look at this as the positions we have depth at, etc.

1) Jamal Lewis - If he goes down, i hope that Jerome Harrison and Wright are ready to pick up a big load because we have NO legitimate backup at this point at RB. Wright is a joke, he never has had a 150 yard game. Someone said Suggs and Green were worse, those guys had some legitimate games at points. I've never seen a good game out of a starting Wright.

2) Ted Washington - God i hope that he doesn't go down and is in the best conditioning shape of his life. lol. The more that Big Ted is able to play, the better. He's a key to stopping the run. I know very little about Shaun Smith but the Bengals weren't willing to pay him 2 mil? and their defense isn't that great. now i know we're in differen't schemes but he's a real questionmark in my book

3) Braylon Edwards - It would be great if he broke out this season. Catching the ball better and making more big plays would make me really happy. Something like 1200 yards and 9 TDs

4) Brodney Pool - Guys got tons of talent, if he shows it our safetys will reek havoc and make our defense much better.

5) Joe Thomas - Joe's learning process is very important for us this season. If he can protect the blindside, we're much better than if he can't. We've all seen this over the past couple years.

Well , if you can run the ball & stop the run then you win more than you loose ( real simple )

#1 " OL " unit ( whom ever ) must open lanes for Lewis & protect the QB .. Just like every other year ! Thomas & Stieny !

#2 " Front Seven " on the D .. First they must stop the run and get to the QB .. Just like every other year .. The Smiths ! DQ. will have to step up !

#3 BE. will he become " All that he can be " .. I still have reservations .

#4 The whole " D " back field .. Who steps up to the plate ? Pool , Hamilton , Wright , Holly , can Bodden make through the whole season ???

#5 By the time we get to mid- season ; Who is the takin the snaps and how far will " HIS " Leadership take us !

Joe Thomas: Can he step in and be the foundation of the line at LT?

Braylon Edwards: Has he truly grown up and matured, or is it all off-season spin?

Kellen Winslow: Is he healthy and ready to build on last season?

Shaun Smith: Can he clog up the middle and allow us to play the run better than we have over the past 7 or so years?

(Tie) Jamal Lewis/Robaire Smith: Run the ball and stop the run. These 2 big off-season acquisitions will determine how well we do either/both. How will they fit in Cleveland?

Yeah, this is where it's going to be interesting in 2007. Playoff contenders? I hardly think so. Our schedule isn't that forgiving. If we manage to make it to 8-8 it'll be something.

First, I'm gonna say that it will take every man on the field, sideline, coaching staff, and in the FO to help the Browns.

But I'll play along, my top 5 are:

1. Joe Thomas

2. Eric Steinbach

3. Kellen Winslow

4. Leigh Bodden

5. Wimbley

Now there are others that are worth mentioning. both Smith DL's, Frye/Quinn, Lewis, Eric Wright, Pool (if the light clicks) B.E. (again, if the light clicks)

We still need to solidify the Right Side of the OL, We still need DL help, and We still need WR help.

So there are still issues that need to be resolved before we are a dominating team.

In order

1. Brady Quinn
2. Joe Thomas
3. Braylon Edwards
4. Brodney Pool
5. Jamal Lewis or Eric Wright

Winslow, Bodden, Wimbley, Jones... I could go a bit more but you get the picture.

They're all proven IMO and if those 5 up there play good this year or next year I believe our team will be finally "Good" and make that leap to 8-8, 9-7 or 10-6.

I'll play:

1. Jamal Lewis - He's gotta have a big year, or hope that the Browns get someone to split carries with. On a one-year deal, he'll have a lot to prove, especially with a much improved offensive line.

2. Braylon Edwards - It's put up or shut up. He's gotta make some big catches and prove he's not a cancer in the locker room.

3. Willie McGinest - I thought he looked done last year. It's time for him to either step it up, or fade back as a mentor to Wimbley et all

4. Leigh Bodden - He needs to shed the "good player, but always hurt for a few games" role he's had the past few years. He's our only legitimate starting corner right now.

5. Brady Quinn - He needs to prove it was worthwhile to trade away next year's number one. I expect him to start 3/4 of this season's games.

Eric Wright. This kid has to pan out because he is the real deal breaker in this years draft. Quinn and Thomas will be fine hes the X factor

D Jackson and Leon. - These 2 linebackers need to really produce this year. The 3-4 requires a good rotation of fresh bodys sometimes and to really step over the top they need to step up as well.

Sowells - I know that he may not see alot of playing time but injurys happen and we are probably going to need him during the season and hopefully hes ready to also step up.

Finally Vickers. They cut Smith because they believe in his skills so he could be the final X-factor in the browns season.

X-Factors??

simple:

Kellen Winslow
Braylon Edwards
Sean Jones
Kamerion Wimbley
Joshua Cribbs

All of these guys are key to this team. and some may ask why i put Cribbs, and I put him b/c he has a chance to get a TD everytime he returns a kick... Special Teams is sometimes forgotten, but Cribbs makes you remember!!
