NFL mock draft 2015 roundup: Danny Shelton a popular pick for Browns and Marcus Mariota dropping?
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2015/03/nfl_mock_drafts_who_are_the_br.htmlCLEVELAND, Ohio -- There is a theme developing in mock drafts as they pertain to the Browns: the run defense was really bad last season. You don't need me to tell you that. All you need is a pair of eyeballs and the ability to cringe whenever a running back goes untouched for five or more yards -- like every time.
How do you fix an abysmal run defense? Signing Randy Starks isn't a terrible start. That can't be all, though. So, as we often do in these parts, we turn our attention to the NFL Draft.
A little over a week ago, you and I had a little heart-to-heart about Danny Shelton, a beast of a man who played college football for Washington. Now, as we check in once again with various mock drafts, Shelton's name is popping up for the Browns at both Nos. 12 and 19.
CBS Sports' Pete Prisco has Shelton coming to Cleveland at No. 19, after going wideout at 12:
12. Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
They have to get a big-play receiver, and this kid is that.
19. Danny Shelton, NT, Washington
I like the idea of them adding a power player inside, even with the signing of veteran Randy Starks.

In fact, it's an entire movement in the offices of CBS Sports. See Dane Brugler's mock:
12. Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
Cleveland needs to revamp the front-seven in order to stop the run and a good place to start is at nose tackle. Shelton won't have the same type of production in the NFL like he did at Washington, but he should be a long-term anchor for a three-man front.
19. Alvin Dupree, DE, Kentucky
The Browns addressed the front-seven at pick No. 12 (Danny Shelton) and could do so again with a pass rusher at No. 19. Dupree is a tremendous athlete for his size and adds a dynamic element to Mike Pettine's defense.
Mel Kiper's most recent mock is from March 5, but he's on the Shelton-to-the-Browns bandwagon as well:
12. Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
Teams ran consistently and effectively on the Browns last season, and it started in the middle of the line, where they just didn't have the block-eaters after Phil Taylor was lost with an injury. And while we know the Browns need to add at least one pass-catcher who can come in and help early, Shelton landing here would be a gift. He's not as disruptive as sack and TFL totals indicate, but he can eat up double-teams at the point of attack and make others around him better. He has great awareness and will occasionally simply discard blocks and make the tackle himself. He can also eat up snaps. At 340 pounds, he's exactly what the Browns need in the middle.
19. Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami (FL)
I can see Browns fans cringing at the thought of a first round with two picks that doesn't deliver a wide receiver. But let's remember this draft is packed with pass-catching talent, and if the board breaks this way I think the Browns could target a potential high-impact offensive lineman rather than taking the fifth receiver available at No. 19 overall. The Browns were really set back on offense last year when they lost Alex Mack, and while Flowers isn't a center, a player like him would have helped offset the brutal ripple effect we saw last year. For a team that has to run the ball to be successful on offense, making sure things are in a good place up front is crucial. The Browns can still get a couple of good pass-catchers from this draft.
NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah is Team Shelton (and Team Kiper):
12. Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
Shelton is a dominating run defender and fills a void in the Browns' defense.
19. Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami (FL)
This isn't a sexy pick, but Flowers is a Day 1 starter at right tackle.
Walter Football has the Browns picking ... well, you know this by now:
12. Danny Shelton, NT, Washington
Cleveland was atrocious against the run to close out the season. Part of the reason for that was incompetent play from the defensive line. It didn't help that Phil Taylor, who struggled early, missed the second half of the year with a knee injury. He has literally been a huge disappointment. The same goes for Ahtyba Rubin.
I've had Danny Shelton as high as No. 5 before, so being able to grab him at the 12th selection is a steal. I just couldn't find a home for him in the top 10. I considered Chicago, but Kevin White seems like the better prospect.
19. Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami
The Browns have expressed a desire to fortify their offensive and defensive lines, so they can take care of the former with this selection. The front office wanted to upgrade Mitchell Schwartz last year, with plans to move him inside. Here's a potential new starter in Ereck Flowers, who could easily go as high as No. 10 to the Rams.
Shelton. The solution to all the Browns' problems. Except for that pesky quarterback position. How do they solve that, Charley Casserly of NFL.com?
6. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
The Browns cannot rely on Johnny Manziel and will trade up here with the New York Jets to grab Mariota.
19. DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville
After trading up for Mariota, the Browns grab a WR to go with their new QB.
Whoa! Great! They went and got their quarterback ... and somehow managed to hold on to the 19th pick ... and one of the draft's top receivers also slid to that 19th pick ... probably not. But wait, Rob Rang of CBS Sports thinks Mariota could be had trade-up-free:
12. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
With four quarterbacks already on the roster (Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel, Connor Shaw and Thaddeus Lewis), the Browns appear likely to be focusing elsewhere for the draft. The problem is that none of those quarterbacks exactly inspires confidence. New quarterback coach Kevin O'Connell has worked with Mariota throughout the off-season and orchestrated the reigning Heisman Trophy winner's Pro Day. Cleveland might not aggressively move up to get a quarterback but if Mariota fell into its lap, it might be easier to gamble on yet another passer in the first round (it would be the third time in four years) than to let him fall further and potentially become a star elsewhere.
19. Malcom Brown, DT, Texas
The Browns finished dead last in the NFL in run defense a year ago and have allowed more than 2,000 rushing yards in 14 of the past 16 seasons -- a recipe for disaster in the black and blue AFC North. The 6-4, 320-pound Brown is a stout run defender who add bulk and strength to an otherwise undersized front.
Brown has been linked to the Browns somewhat regularly at 19, too, by the way. It's not just Rang who thinks Mariota could slide. Brian Baldinger of NFL.com does, too:
12. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
Eventually, the Browns will get this position correct, although Mariota is anything but a sure thing.
19. T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh
Upgrading the offensive line is part of Mike Pettine's plan.
This is mock draft season. Pick the Browns' biggest areas of need -- DL, OL, QB, WR -- and throw a dart at the board. Right, Peter Schrager of Fox Sports?
12. Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State
The run on wide receivers continues. Arizona State hasn't had a first-round pick since 2003, when Terrell Suggs went to Baltimore. Strong will end that drought. Cleveland clearly needs help at wideout with Josh Gordon slated to miss the 2015 season since neither Andrew Hawkins nor Brian Hartline is a true No. 1. Strong ran a lightning-fast 4.40 40-yard dash at the combine and came in at 6-3, 215 pounds. There were some questions about his speed, but his 40 time silenced those. The top 12 is not beyond reason for this JUCO transfer who has a lot of upside.
19. La'el Collins, OT, LSU
Collins didn't blow anyone away at the Senior Bowl, but he performed much better at the combine, solidifying a first-round grade. He weighed in at 305 pounds and has a good physical frame. He did it all at LSU, can play tackle or guard and could be a nice addition to an offensive line that is already pretty strong (when healthy). Cleveland has the luxury of two first-round picks and could be in the market for some trading activity. If Collins is still on the board at 19 and the Browns have already snagged Jaelen Strong, that's a good first round.
So many options for the Browns to explore. So many needs. This is draft season.
