And by the same token, there's no guarantee Mariota is available for such a trade. Maybe Tampa Bay or Tennessee are just as sold as you are.
I like Mariota. He's the only QB in this draft who I think has a chance to be great. But I don't think we have a chance for him. And even if we do, it will cost dearly. I don't see that as our only option, mostly because I don't see solving the obvious QB problem as something we HAVE to do right now. I take a long view. I've read your arguments, and they are good arguments, I just don't agree that QB is something we have to solve right now. We still don't know what we have in JFF, we still have improvements we need to make at other positions and overall depth, and there may be better options down the road. I just don't feel your sense of urgency.

Here's something I find odd. People are saying we will suck so much this year because we don't have a QB. Their answer is to trade multiple first round picks and maybe more to solve it.
However, if we really end up sucking as much as they claim this year, we will be in the perfect position to draft a great QB next year.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

If the Titans want Mariota there is nothing anyone can do. We could offer them four first round picks and they would say no. If their is a QB you think can be above-average for five years in a row (and you don't have a QB already), you have to take him.

If Mariota falls to 12. I would take him.
If he falls out of the top 5, and we can move the 12 up without using another 1st rounder, I do it.
If neither of those things happen. I sit back, let the draft come to me. Maybe even trade back for the right offer..
I mean, I like Mariota, I dont think he's great.. more of a Ryan Tannehill type, ok out of the gate, gets better every year, etc..
But if he was a potential franchise QB, theres no way Tennessee would pass on him.. let alone him drop out of the top 5..

If Mariota falls to 12 just by that fact I wouldn't want us to take him. that fact...a lot of teams without QB set as Franchise QB passed up on him.
I'm tired of getting the sloppy 2nds - the guy who falls.
BQ, Weeden well he didn't fall just was QB #4, Manziel falling to 22 although in my books it was because of his size and that I could live with. Hopefully we will find out.
Of course in the past ones - we had two first round picks and didn't think enough of those QBs to take with our earlier ones that should also say something.
I would just be very leery of a QB falling. If Mariota is a GREAT PROSPECT he really should get past #2.

by that logic, that means Aaron Rodgers was sloppy seconds.

Yep but I thought Rodgers was better than Smith at the time. I know Winston is better than Mariota.
A LOT OF TEAMS passed on Rodgers who simply did not have a need. but you are correct Rodgers was great and We among others passed on him. Now the logic is sound the question is will Mariota be an exception to the rule like Rodgers was?
Back to back...Franchise QB mistakes as we passed up on Big Ben in 04 then Rodgers in 05...

Why did Aaron Rodgers drop? So if another team passes on a quarterback you don't take him?
Everybody passed on Bridgewater including the Browns how did that work out? How about Brees and Montana?
Every team can look at a player differently. Every team can rank players differently. Every team can have a different set of priorities.
You make decisions to improve the team. You base those decisions based upon how you evaluate talent.
If you like one guy over another at the same position why would you care what another team does?
The Browns passed on all kind of receivers last year who had great impact for the teams that selected them. How did that work out?
You don't get "do overs". You spend tons of money scouting maybe you should listen to what your scouts say.

You may have thought that but others teams did not.
You believe Winston is better than Mariota. You do not know that and neither does any one else.
That is the whole point. Teams view players differently. No different than fans and analysts putting out Mocks drafts.

I think the Rodgers/Smith swap is one of my favorite "What ifs?" In the NFL..
While Rodgers may not have been "Aaron Rodgers" if he started his rookie year, he couldn't have been worse than Smith..
And going to Green Bay (or anywhere) and sitting for a few years would of been the best thing to happen to Alex Smith..

A lot people that even dislike JFF believe that 7 quarters is not long enough to rate a player. We just spent a 1st rounder on a QB. Give him a year at LEAST with the talent we have and are going to acquire. I belive with what we have, if we add another big WR and beef up our Dline and Oline, then if he fails its on him. Then we go again next year with a new QB. But I do not want to waste another pick(s) on a QB when there very well could be a chance we have our starter on the roster already.
Lets say we reach and draft a QB, JFF starts the year, he does poorly, the fans call for a switch (which they will) and the staff makes a switch. What if the guy you drafted this year is a bum too? Guess what, now you got two first round bums, and will be picking another Qb next year.
I vote we ride out JFF this year. If it doesnt work out, we get our guy next year.

According to that logic, you would never draft a QB because he might be a bum. Now I'm not really disagreeing with your premise. I don't believe 6 or 7 quarters of football is enough to announce JFF as a failure. But that's us, as fans who know nothing that really went on behind the scenes. We don't know about what the coaching staff did and didn't see in his skill set. We don't know if the coaching staff believes that rehab will be enough to turn JFF around. To put it directly, we as fans simply don't have enough information to determine what should and what should not be done here. Does this FO have enough confidence to put all of their eggs in the JFF basket? Do they really see a better option in this draft? I don't believe any of us know the answer to that question right now.

If we draft a QB in the first round, maybe even the first 2 or 3...
They are most likely going to start, if not.. At least be ahead of Manziel on the depth chart..

We can kill 2 birds with one stone, in that we can see what we have in JFF and if that fails then we would be set up for a better QB class in 2016.

So if another team passes on a quarterback you don't take him?If this is a question I will answer it...if you are trying to state that is my point of you...you are being just silly.
Rodgers dropped about 10 slots cause it reached a whole mess of teams that had no need for QB...now I guess I'll ask you a question... you seem to be using Rodgers as your litmus test - are you saying Mariota is as good as Rodgers?
Let Bridgewater get more games in him before you crown him as a great QB. Everybody passed on Bridgewater cause he had the worst proday I think EVER! Thats why. If you actually knew my opinion I was saying he was the obvious overall #1 pick.
This is what I'm saying...don't make up your own stuff.
Mariota has some questions around him there is risk. The general concensus might be he would need a year under his belt at least. He might not go top 5 because of that. If that is the case and he drops to 12 we will have a decision to make. Take another and pretty much sit and develop Mariota...see what Manziel has this year. Best case scenario we might end up with 2 Franchise QBs and then choose which we want to keep and trade the other.
Worse case is both turn out to be busts maybe back ups?
What I was saying before is the Titans don't have an answer yet. Redskins are looking to move on from RG3, Bears are looking to move on from Cutler, Jets cannot be serious that Geno Smith is their guy. I'm sure there my be one or two more before our pick. What I was saying usually guys drop for a reason. Quinn, Bridgewater you know why he dropped right? Rodgers...once it got passed a certain number it was dropping more...but he was the exception. QBs usually move up no drop, like Weeden, Tannehill, Ponder.
On the norm QBs move up not Drop...when one does there are reasons. Risks. Coming to the draft Bridgewater pretty much dropped - Bortles moved up. Manziel heck two ways some had him dropping some had him move up to where we took him...
The Browns passing on WRS...you guys and your WRs who had great impact for the teams that selected them. How did that work out?I'll tell you how funny that statement is. Probably the most impact WR of last year was who - EVANS...yep how did that work out. They are picking first in the draft.
Don't you guys get it...NOBODY HAS WON A CHAMPIONSHIP CAUSE OF THEIR IMPACT WRS! Why even bring that up in this discussion.
Now you telling me you know what our scouts say?
Please tell me before the draft what our scouts say. I really would like to know. Again I have no clue what your point is here. I'm sorry I don't like Mariota as much as you. But if our guys think he is great...I will give them the benefit of the doubt. jmho you don't have to have the same one...but evidently I have to have the same as yours...lol

EO, so Big Ben wins the SB if Santonio Holmes doesn't make that crazy sideline catch?
or Eli gets his SB against the SB without mannigham and that crazy catch with the ball on his helmet?
huh....
but anyway i get your point about Rodgers. I was just saying that the guy did slide, because if he was THAT good at the time, he wouldn't had slid that much. or he would've gotten picked over Alex Smith. Basically what i'm saying is, just because a QB slides doesn't mean much.
for example, it could be that Mariota gets picked 1st and Winston slides, but as prospects Winston is the better QB. Does that mean we should take him if he falls to 12? just a question, as i never actually knew what your take was on Winston. maybe thats because you think we had no shot at him in the first place? Normally you talk alot about QB's. just wondering bro.

That was Tyree with the helmet catch, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't a high pick. I'm not really sure what your questions are getting at, Swish.
Would Brady have gotten his most recent SB without a great play by an undrafted CB? As much as QBs get the credit, it's still a team sport for everyone.
As far as quarterbacks, did anyone watch those Austin Dodge highlights? I think he could fit what we seem to be trying to do on offense. Pettine seems to be a ground and pound sort of guy of the Rex Ryan persuasion. Lots of running and then taking deep shots out of play action to keep the D from stacking the box.
I like Mariota and he's better at deep throws than I thought, but it's still not his forte. I'm not sure I like him enough to trade up for him, especially with the revolving door of first round QBs we've had (Quinn, Weeden, and potentially Manziel). I think we've got to give Manziel the reins and let him sink or swim this season. We can't keep starting over with our continuity.

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/arti...c2-ce80b98b3fb4Dawg Pound Journal: 2 quarterbacks moving up draft boards? Garrett Grayson, Bryce Petty take potential leap forward with pro days Let’s not pretend to overly hype up pro days for quarterbacks: They stand in a t-shirt and shorts and throw to wide open receivers. Nevertheless, there is still pressure on these NFL hopeful gunslingers to perform at a high level. And in the recent days, two of them have. Bryce Petty of Baylor and Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson, both projected to be mid-round picks, are garnering some buzz in league circles. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Petty has been commended as a field general, coming up with big-time throws in clutch situations while leading Baylor to back-to-back Big 12 conference championships. Petty effectively operated Baylor’s run-and-shoot spread offense, but that’s exactly the question that’s surrounded him throughout the pre-draft process – does his skill set transfer to a pro-style offense? To take action on this, all of Petty’s 77 passes at his pro day were from under center, and he completed 69 of them (five of those incompletions were dropped by receivers). Cowboy’s quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson told the Dallas Morning News it was Petty’s touch passing that has intrigued Dallas and other teams to take a harder look at the quarterback. The most recent quarterback prospect to take center stage is Grayson. The 6-foot-2, 213-pounder thrived for the Rams in the Mountain West, tossing 32 touchdowns, 4,000 yards and only seven interceptions during his senior season. NFL.com wrote that Grayson is perceived much higher in the scouting community than he is from media mock drafts. A pulled hamstring caused Grayson to miss the NFL Combine back in February, but in his own private workout Monday at Colorado State, he took control of his narrative. Grayson, Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo and quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell in attendance, completed 70-of-74 passes and ran an unconfirmed 4.59-second 40-yard dash. Scouting reports say Grayson is accurate and showed an adept pocket presence in college but doesn’t have the strongest arm and uses a wacky throwing motion. The Browns gobbled up Josh McCown before free agency started and the Texans struck a deal with Brian Hoyer. Behind those two, the pickings have been slim in terms of quarterbacks, which means many teams are going to heavily consider both Petty and Grayson to bring in additional competition.
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

Wow, I had no idea Grayson was that fast!
His throwing motion is beyond wacky, but I think his arm is strong enough. Give him a year or two, and I like him just as much as Winston.
Petty has the ability to be the best QB in this draft, right up there with Mariota, IMO. Petty has everything except experience and footwork in an NFL offense. Give him that, he'll be a high level starter in the league.
you had a good run Hank.

EO, so Big Ben wins the SB if Santonio Holmes doesn't make that crazy sideline catch?
You just don't get what I'm saying its like you are all stuck in this Fantasy World and I feel like Alice in Wonderland.
I have never ever said a Team does not need WRs. I never stated that a great catch hasn't been key in a game.
This is what I'm sort of saying. Matthews last year was maybe the closest I ever saw a WR carry a team to a SB..of course Seattle couldn't close the deal.
Matthews...they got off the couch like a month prior???
or Eli gets his SB against the SB without mannigham and that crazy catch with the ball on his helmet?
well too bad that wasn't Manningham the catch on the helmet was David Tyree and exactly my point again a 6th round pick.
Besides both Eli SB - he was on fire...HE not the WRs yeah they caught the balls. But throughout that playoff run ELI was unreal.
Again I am saying it again - Nobody won a championship as in carried the team - by a WR. I never said you don't need WRs - but this NEED crapola is just that. But those who state we blew it by not taking WRs...nah.
If the right one and good value falls to us. I'm all for the investment. But this OH NO we don't have a #1 is a lot of ingnorance on the position.
Btw just for the record I would really like for us to use #19 on DG-B I think he is going to be SPECIAL and a steal at 19.
jmho..now lets get back to QB part 2.

Grow up...I answered your questions. Instead of a discussion you call foul and a rant.
Excuse me for making my point. What am I suppose to do?
Actually for your benefit - I think in the 2nd Eli SB Manningham made some good plays. He was actually considered a bust and really haven't done much since (I think injuries?)
I see questions that looked more like putting me in my place on the subject that questions...but I answered them. Now maybe my answers were too goood??? So you go and pull this eo is a bully thing. Come on - I'll repeat myself grow up.

Come on - I'll repeat myself grow up. To get back on topic, I agree you can make do with average WR's IF and only IF you have a top tier QB throwing them the ball. So that its really the only thing that matters. I believe with the WR we have it would extremely helpful to get a true #1 WR, but honestly, if we had a QB to throw him the ball, they could get by just fine. QB's make recievers more than WR's make QBs

Normally you talk alot about QB's. just wondering bro. ___________ that was on the same post as the WR part. you didn't answer any questions had ask regarding your take on Winston or if we should take him at 12, the other QB parts. learn to freaking read, since now you want to throw insults out there.

Here is what you wrote:
"If Mariota falls to 12 just by that fact I wouldn't want us to take him. that fact...a lot of teams without QB set as Franchise QB passed up on him." ========================================
So I asked this question:
So if another team passes on a quarterback you don't take him? ================================================
So how else would you interpret what you wrote?
Russell Wilson, Rodgers, Brees, Montana to mention a few were passed on by other teams who did not have a franchise QB.
Last year the Browns passed on Bridgewater. So did the Jags, and Oakland.
Would you like to have Bridgewater playing for the Browns this year? ======================================================
Receivers: You act like you are the only guy who gets it.
"Don't you guys get it...NOBODY HAS WON A CHAMPIONSHIP CAUSE OF THEIR IMPACT WRS!"
How about receivers score touchdowns.
Farmer has stated that a good day for a receiver is he makes 10 catches. They are not "in" on every play. He would rather invest in linemen because they impact every down.
Really? How about if out of ten catches two are TD's?
How about blocking downfield? How about selling routes when they are not targeting them?
So if receivers like Evans or Beckham go to teams that do not win many games they are not worth drafting at the draft slot selected? =============================================
"Now you telling me you know what our scouts say?" =====================================================
Here is what I wrote:
"You don't get "do overs". You spend tons of money scouting maybe you should listen to what your scouts say."
As in if the scouts say take Watkins he is the BPA: "You spend tons of money scouting maybe you should listen to what your scouts say." ================================================
Not to be a wise guy but I could care less if you don't like Mariota. You are not alone.
I didn't want Manziel last year and told you so very early in the draft process. So what. That does not mean a thing other than we are entitled to opinions about players. It is not a contest of who is right or wrong.
I want Mariota to be a Cleveland Brown because I "believe" he can become what this team has needed for a long time. A consistent winner for a long time.
Will it happen in year one? Very doubtful.
I could be dead wrong and he fails.
But this I do know.
The Browns will not win a championship until they get a quarterback who can lead a team consistently over time.

Thanks for the discussion.
Rodgers I think the teams stated his size had him sliding... I do know teams are very height bias in QB specs - just recently maybe cause of the success of Rodgers and Brees. Some of that under 6'3" bias has changed. I do know the under 6' bias is definitely there.
But Rodgers was the exception.
To you question...if Mariota is taken 1...and Winston drops through all those teams that should be "BLESSED" to have him drop to them - as a fan I'm not privy to the INFO but there is something about his that is making him drop. Because of mass media draft day...Schefter and all his contacts would be hot on this and probably get the scoop from somebody...Drug test or fracture showed up in his vertebrae. There is a reason so do we take him at 12? I don't know there is no definitive answer each case should have a different set of circumstances.
All I was saying before is that if Mariota went through the Gauntlet of QB needy teams I would be very leary of it. The only reason of He will have to take a year to transition...then I would maybe jump on it. But if you read what I said is that if our guys who have studied Mariota take him at 12...I'm behind it 100%. Just when a guy drops there is usually reason.
To state Rodgers and say that thought process is null and void. I don't think is realistic. Rodgers was the exception. Bridgewater...don't know I still am befuddled by that choreographed Pro Day. but we all know that is why he dropped...justified or not we'll see. I mean a case for BEWARE of QBs moving up can be made.
Mariota...we definitely made a mistake on passing up on BIG BEN in 04, Rodgers in 05, Possibly Bridgewater in 2014? But I don't have the same vibe of talent from Mariota. What I do know - I like the system we have, we have better info than anyone on Mariota and some other QBs. If they think Mariota is the guy...I'm all for it...no arguments here.
I guess its the posters who say if we pass up on him we are stupid. No if we pass up on him we know why who studied him more than us?
jmho and thank you again for changing directions...I really don't like to argue I know it might seem otherwise. But I don't.

I know it was a long time ago, but I'd say the Steelers won at least one, if not 2 of their '70s Super Bowls as a pretty direct result of Swann and Stalworth. Now that's only a small example, but to say it NEVER happens, isn't totally accurate.
There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. -Derek Jeter

I thought it was because of their AMAZING DEFENSE and pretty solid Running game! Did the make some great catches and big plays...of course. Were they part of the team and deserve some accolades - of course! Were they a Champioship team because of their WRs...I don't think so. Great RB duo which in those days was important and why both WRs got behind defenders... Strong armed Bradshaw very important he could throw that long ball. If I had to say Why did they win that Championship and 3 others. I'd have to say it was because of their D...one of the all time best defenses. It was a thing of beauty as much as I hate saying it. Again not saying you don't need any WR....just saying rarely will the Championship did it with WRs as the key factor.
Also different eras...Those days it was run and vertical stretch.
Walsh brought in the WCO era - high pct passes - living off of underneath passes and dump offs to the RBs.
Our era with the no contact after 5 yards era...you don't have to be Calvin Johnson to get over, Andre Johnson to get over, Fitzgerald to get over, AJ Green to get over, Julio Jones to get over...None of which have one a championship.
When I say this too many think I'm saying it will hurt us if we do. Not what I'm saying. I've always stated if the right guy is there at the right spot...TAKE HIM.
I am not of the genre who will say take this guy and if he's not there take the next best and if he's not there take the next best regardless of value. We are up to Jalen Strong now. Got to get him...I'm saying WHY???
Me as dumb as I am - I will say this...19 I would JUMP ALLOVER DG-B cause he is tremendous value at 19...he is a WR teams would take top 5. Do I think we will? not with our Gordon and Manziel history I don't think??? I think we stay away from all risk 12 & 19 which in theory means stay away from Mariota also.

I def think it is SAFE to say, that whatever happens and whoever falls where, Farmer will draft the SAFEST pick.
Farmers only downside (other than textgate) has been JF and JG last year in round 1.He will look to rectify that and go with a safe pick I believe. DT and OL maybe??? I honestly do not think he will draft a QB regardless of who is there at 12 due to this fact and the fact they have come out and supported JF. JMO

Nevada QB - Cody Fajardo Cody Fajardo of Nevada has look of a draftable quarterback Gil Brandt NFL Media senior analyst Representatives from nine NFL teams were present for Nevada's pro day on Wednesday, when 13 players worked out outdoors on FieldTurf. Quarterback Cody Fajardo (6-foot-1 5/8, 223 pounds) went through an impressive, 54-play scripted workout led by noted quarterback coach Steve Calhoun. Fajardo was accurate with his passes and had good velocity on the ball. The quality of Fajardo's pro day workout lifted him into being a selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Fajardo was among the top performers at quarterback in the 40-yard dash, three-cone drill and 20-yard short shuttle.

I think Fajardo is one of the few QBs I wouldn't mind us drafting on Day 3. The comeback he led against Grayson's Rams was pretty sweet. He also probably threw the ball second-best at the combine.

Someone here wrote that when you draft a QB in the first round you expect him to be your starter. This may be true, but I don't think it should be.
Virtually every year, good, promising young QBs come out of college and are drafted early in the first round by teams who don't have good QB. But if they are drafting that high, QB probably isn't that team's only problem. So they get thrust into the starting role before they have had a chance to learn the pro game. And they are doing so on a team that usually can't protect them. Their confidence gets shaken, they are often physically injured, and they change their approach to the game, away from what made them good in college.
The QB is the team's brain. While it may be easy for a RB or WR to step in as a rookie and immediately excel, the QB has to learn a system more complex than anything he has ever played before, has to learn the abilities of each of his players and how to work with those abilities, and he has to learn the far more complex defenses of the other teams in the league. That is A LOT to ask.
I believe that it is ALWAYS preferable to red-shirt QBs, always preferable to let them spend their first year on the sidelines learning by watching, talking with the starter and coaches, and spending long hours watching game film.
The problem is that most of the time, the teams that draft them can't do that. They have fan bases and owners who want wins NOW! So they get thrown into the fire too soon and end up not realizing their full potential.

Having (2) 1st rounders is a luxury. We have to make sure it nets us a franchise QB.
If its not Mariota, trade #19 for a 2016 1st rounder. We have to keep the ammo. It would be a major shame to have The GUY there in 2016 and not have the picks to go get him.
If we don't draft the franchise QB in 2015, Pay It Forward so we can next time. Repeat as long as necessary.

But you went on to say it very we'll yourself! I'm not saying we HAVE to trade 19 back for a 1st rounder in 2016.. But if the offer is there, and it's valuable enough, I would take it.. I'm also still ok with selling these picks for the last few years of someone that's already a franchise QB.. seriously.. I just want a QB..
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?
