3-4 years ago, most people would've clicked that and expected an argument for/against the ideas brought about by the president's 'you didn't build that' campaign trail comments.

The quote itself comes from Leslie Knope, a sitcom character wonderfully sculpted by a great deal of brilliant and talented writers and friends (no doubt as a commentary on the politics of the moment).

But I realized lately that it is, in fact, a truth, and one that compels me to thank the board for their thoughts and wishes in a difficult time for me.

Imagine a place so diverse, yet inclusive enough that you can say out loud 'I need help' and hear encouragement from dozens of people (many who don't like you).

No one ever achieves anything alone.

Are there people who honestly think that, anyway?

I'm one of those.

I do however wish you well in this endeavor. We are all just puny humans in the end and I hate to see any of us suffer and lose the battle with our own demons. Fight the good fight and I will always be here to torment you myself.

You are saying you do not believe in the phrase "You didn't build that" correct or "No one achieves anything alone"?

It's one of the things that keeps me coming back to this place.

I'll read two posters go at it (really hard) over some controversial topic, and then find both totally aligned in sentiment in a "prayers, please" thread.... even if one is a devout Christian and the other an atheist. Then, I'll pop over to "pure football," and find them agreeing with each other about a particular draft choice or decision that should be made by the FO.

It's easily the craziest place I frequent. Schizophrenic to the max.

One thing I have noticed more than any other: when a Dawg is hurting, the Pack closes ranks and lends support- in a big way. For that reason alone, it's a privilege to be a part of this community. I can tell from your remarks that you feel the same way.

Dawgs got your back, Phil Dawson Rocks.

It is very good to see you back here. There was genuine concern for you while you were gone (yeah... I just 'outed' these "macho" b!tches... 'cause they'd never have the vaginas it takes to tell you outright! hehe).

Welcome back to Da Pack.

When I was in school learning my trade, I paid money for that. I was taught the same curriculum everyone else was, but I had the drive to make something of myself through what I was taught.

When I was in my first job based on the training that I had, did I settle for the role they wanted for me? No, I pushed myself to learn more so I could have more options on what I could do with my life.

Now, you say that no one achieves anything alone, but that statement is wrong in its conception. I have achieved what I wanted because I had the drive to do it. I learned what I needed and wanted because of that drive. I have made myself into what I wanted to be. No one pushed me to become who I am. Were other people there along they way? Obviously, but they didn't make me who I am. I did that through my own choices and desires.

I for one don't always agree with your take, but I certainly don't want anything bad to happen to you. Whatever your challenge, I hope you were able to address it and fix it.

I understand what you say and certainly your being smart, and driven has added greatly to your success... but someone had to give you that job so you could excel.

By your own admission... "most" of your education success was on your work... not all.. so someone aided you along the way.

Until which time we operate in a vacuum, away from all outside influences,.. can we ever deny we are not acting alone?

You may as well say we can never act alone, because we are never really alone. Secondly, no one 'gave' me a job. I convinced someone I was worth hiring to fill a position of need, and that I was the best person for them to hire. As for the education, teachers teach, but they can't make someone learn. That is up to the student.

I guess one will have to live on a completely deserted island to be able to claim "I did this myself", but someone had something to do with them getting to that island, right?

Well, you could start by thanking your parents for bringing you into this world, otherwise, none of that other stuff happens. So I guess you didn't do it alone. smile

And now we all know you're full of crap.

Are you employed? Did you get the job because the employer thought you were the best for the job, or were you given the job because they felt sorry for you?

I convinced them I was the best for the job. They still gave me the job. I deserved it, but they still gave it to me. I didn't take it. Look, I know that you might think the world revolves around you, but it doesn't.

Did you not actually earn the position, then? Do you not keep that position by your hard work and effort? Have others with similar jobs been laid off, but not you? Is that given to you, or is it something you've earned? All your employer provided was an opportunity, and you are providing a well needed service for your employer, otherwise you wouldn't be working there.

Someone who is given a job, does not work at it. Please see any governmental job where people wait for hours, like the IRS, SSA, or DMV.

ok they hired you for whatever reason...

still a job was available... what of the people that ran the company that hired you... their success at the business was what opened the position in the first place... without their success that job would not have been available.

On getting to the desert island... unless you swim someone had to build the boat, unless you do, or manufacture the motor, unless you do.

Again unless you operate in a vacuum others influence the opportunities and the options available to you.

Yes, that job was available, and they hired me as they saw me as the best way to continue their success. So, did they give me the job, or have I contributed to their continued success? You could almost say they owe me, which is why they pay me nicely. As I have said before, they didn't give me anything. They gave themselves a way to continue making money, though my assistance. I earn my continued place there everyday through my hard work.

I only claimed to have created myself, but please continue to take things out of context, as you so often do. You might have also noted that I was being sarcastic and sardonic, but I doubt that.

Then you're using things someone else created? So you didn't build that.

Really? You didn't actually create yourself? I'm in shock! Everything I know is lie! How will I go on living?

By the by, since you lack self awareness, I doubt you'll be able to pick up that sarcasm even when it's hamfisted like that -- so, for the record, that was sarcasm.

CONTINUED success implies it was enjoyed prior to your being there without said success no job available , so again you build on what others have done.

BTW not sure I buy that creator thing... Now if you were created on the 8th day how did you have a discussion with him about how long the week should be? you spoke before you were?

You're arguing a joke? You must lead a terribly small life. If I were you, I'd start questioning my own self worth, as it appears you have none. In fact, your self worth is obviously so low, that you are unhappy unless everyone else's is a low as yours.

On the 2nd point first, time is a paradoxical illusion of physics. Deal with it.

On the first point 2nd, success leads to stagnation, stagnation leads to failure. Their success is based on my success, so you could also say I have continued and perpetuated their growing prosperity. This is due to my knowledge for the part I do at work, which I worked very hard to obtain. I determined problems that they had, which a new viewpoint was able to pick out. I advised my company to make certain changes, which would improve their business model. Therefore, their success is my success, which is their success again. Think of it as a symbiotic relationship.

Once again, they didn't give me anything. We made an agreement with each other to improve each other and keep each other going.

Obviously not, as I didn't disappear in a puff of logic just now. Have you considered that I may just be a figment of your imagination, if such a thing actually exists?

Crap, you could be a figment of my imagination. Great, now I'll have to make another trip to the Institute for the Temporally Very Confused.
