My son, an RN, got accepted to grad school to become a Nurse Practitioner. I have no doubt he'll make it.

Weird how life works. I'd love to be half the success my dad was, or my grandfathers were, or my son is.

Arch, congrats to your son.

For my own learning, what's the difference between an RN and a nurse practitioner?

From my understanding, a NP is just a step "below" a doctor. A NP can diagnose, treat, prescribe drugs, etc - but can't "apecialize".

In some states they're called Physician Assistants I believe.

Now, some with expertise can correct me if I'm wrong or missing something.

Your son is kickin' butt. Great news. RN alone is very good.

PS. Here in Connecticut they're PAs.

I guess it depends on one's definition of 'success.'

Judging by all things that are truly important, I'd say you done aight fer yerself...

NP's and PA's have different scopes of practices. The hospital I work in has both. I prefer NP's(over MD's), especially if they've worked as RN's prior.

Interesting. The Dr. I see is actually a Physician Assistant. Looks, acts, talks, walks just like a doctor. There is a presiding Dr. in his office who is his boss, but I never see him. I always see the PA. He does everything a Dr. would do. I like him quite a bit. He yells at me a lot and doesn't mix words. He doesn't tell me what I want to hear, he tells me what I need to hear about getting my sorry butt in shape. smile

I think I knew this at one point, but I can't remember why PAs stop short of becoming a Dr. Could be less schooling or less liability.
