COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Urban Meyer has received a contract extension through the 2020 season after a year in which he coached Ohio State to the national championship.

His previous contract ran through the 2017 season and would have paid him $4.9 million for 2015. The new terms and extension give Meyer a six-year deal. He will make $5.8 million in total compensation for 2015. His contract will average at least $6.5 million a year over the next six years.

In terms of annual average compensation from the school, Meyer's extension will make him the Big Ten Conference's highest-paid coach — at least for now.

Meyer's extension increases his annual bonus maximum to $775,000 from $550,000, but it removes the automatic offer of an additional contract year if Ohio State wins the Big Ten championship game. Meyer can reach his bonus maximum by appearing in the CFP title game.

Meyer previously had not been eligible for bonuses for coach of the year awards. His extension includes $50,000 for being named Big Ten coach of year and $75,000 for being named national coach of the year — the same amounts that are in Harbaugh's deal.

Ohio State's buyout for firing Meyer without cause begins at $34.1 million and decreases by varying amounts each Feb. 1. For example, it would be more than $21.3 million between Feb. 1, 2017 and Jan. 31, 2018.

Meyer's buyout for leaving Ohio State for another job remains unchanged at $2 million.

He said in a statement Monday he is "honored" to "represent this great university."

Meyer has led Ohio State to a 38-3 record and is undefeated in Big Ten regular-season play at 24-0. The Buckeyes defeated Oregon last season to win the first College Football Playoff.

He deserves every single penny of that and then some. Just an unprecedented and amazing coaching job this year and every year since he's been hired. Next years team could be the best in Ohio State history. Just insanely loaded in talent and depth everywhere. Especially at the most important position in football at Quarterback.

Excellent. He is a great coach, and definitely deserves his new deal. I am glad to know that he will be hanging around for the next 5 years. laugh

I'd love to see OSU win 1-2 more titles over the next decade, so this is very well done to lock him up.

The good thing is I don't see him leaving for any other college. Maybe the NFL, but OSU is his top-of-the-line gig in the NCAA

There's nowhere he could go right now where he'd have it better.

I don't really know if the NFL is in his cards. I think he could do it, but I can't see his family being all that thrilled with it.

He's built a machine at Ohio State. Their credibility for future playoff situations has gone up. His recruiting classes are good.

Not to mention the should be the consensus #1 team coming into the 2015 season. They're losing very little. I really feel bad for VT fan. They play the Hokies on Labor Day, and I see the Buckeyes coming into that game bloodthirsty. How often do you see the defending champion have a chip on their shoulder in their first game since winning it all?

I think he deserves it all. Imagine the movie plot. Coach and team win national title, against long odds, using four QB's against favored opponents and do it all convincingly.

Overwhelming success. And returned number of them. This is LEGEND stuff here.
Congrats!

Anyone who is able to watch, can you provide a summary of the QB snap breakdowns. Thanks

Really excited to get this guy touches in our offense. Injuries screwed him. Curtis Samuel is explosive too.

Cardale Jones' performance at the Scarlett & Gray game was a reminder of why he should be the Buckeyes' starting QB
Apr 18, 2015 -- 5:00pm
By Bruce Hooley | ESPNCleveland.com

Photo/AP

The choice Urban Meyer says he will delay until the middle of August should have been made for him Saturday in the middle of the first quarter of the Scarlet & Gray game.

Here are the three things you need to know about all Meyer needs to know to solve his much-anticipated quarterback battle.

No. 1: Cardale Jones...

No. 2: off one foot...

No. 3: threw the ball 60 yards on the money.

Thank you for coming. See you this fall.

Sure, the pass fell incomplete, and Jones likely would have been sacked on the play if Meyer had allowed defensive end Joey Bosa to do more than slap at the jersey of OSU's reigning national championship quarterback.

But no matter how you classify what happened on that one snap before 99,391 in Ohio Stadium, there is no dismissing that Jones again showed something neither of the other two competitors for the QB job can do.

And that is why Meyer is just wasting time -- his and ours -- by delaying the decision to name Jones as the Buckeyes' starter for 2015.

The hesitation is understandable, because Meyer wants to be sensitive to the feelings of sophomore J.T. Barrett and senior Braxton Miller.

You could tell that much afterward when Meyer said, "This (selection process) will be terrible. It's all good, but the terrible thing is, I admire all three of those guys. It's not just a one-game wonder. Cardale did it for three games. J.T. did it for a whole season. Braxton has had two good years. It's going to be a tough deal."

Of course, it won't be easy to tell Barrett, after finishing fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, that it's time to take a seat behind Jones.

And it will be harder to tell Miller, who's won two Big Ten MVP trophies and who's remained at Ohio State post-graduation when he could have transferred anywhere in the country and played immediately, that his services are no longer needed.

The loyalty Meyer is showing two quarterbacks who've played exemplary football is admirable and seldom seen at cut-throat, big-boy football programs.

But Meyer's job is not to be loyal to any player, it's to put the best team on the field every fall Saturday.

And for Ohio State, that is unquestionably with Jones at the controls.

You could see it Saturday on more than Jones' 60-yard, off-balance, flick-of-the-wrist throw.

You could see it on several of the long, downfield darts Jones completed to Corey Smith, with whom he collaborated on 58- and 37-yard touchdown touchdown passes.

And you could see it at halftime when Jones uncorked a 74-yard pass to win a long-distance throwing competition with Barrett and former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

You could clearly see it, even on a day when Meyer said Jones, who completed 19 of 42 attempts for 304 yards, two inteceptions and two TDs, "was not as sharp as he has been all spring."

Scary, simply scary, just like the artistry in Jones' 60-yard downfield bomb that echoed all the way back to OSU's wins over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon en route to the first College Football Playoff title.

The cliche for what Jones did with that off-one-foot, step-up-in-the-pocket, drop-it-down-the-elevator-shaft strike and for what he did in vanquishing three playoff opponents, is that he, "took the top off the defense."

That's a little bit like saying a volcanic hiccup took the top off Mt. St. Helens.

Jones doesn't just threaten a defense deep, he terrorizes it.

Barrett and Miller can't do what Jones can in that regard, and the Barrett and Miller family trees need not take offense at that assessment.

No one in college can laser it long like Jones.

You think it's a coincidence that Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 220, 230 and 246 yards in consecutive post-season games?
It wasn't.

Elliott doesn't find that room to get rolling if Jones doesn't threaten safeties with completions into the adjoining zip code.

Do you like Ohio State's chances of coming back from a 21-9 second-quarter deficit against Alabama with Barrett or Miller at the controls?

Sure, Elliott clinched that win with an 85-yard touchdown run, but he was going no where until Jones zipped the Buckeyes down the field and into the end zone for 28 unanswered points after falling into that early hole.

Meyer's internal conflict is this:

Barrett and Miller both have the talent to start and lead OSU to an unbeaten regular season. Barrett earned that off his performance last season. Miller earned it off his performance in 2012 and 2013, and for sentimental reasons given his return.

But here's the nagging voice in Meyer's head that he shouldn't ignore:

Jones throws it better than anyone, and the alternatives are not close. How good might Jones be if he received starter's reptitions in practice all the time?

As an added bonus, Jones can bull rush for the tough yard OSU might need to sustain a game-winning drive with a force neither Barrett nor Miller can muster.

"We're going to take it day-by-day," Meyer said of the quarterback decision. "This will be one of the unique stories in college football. How do you handle three quarterbacks? It's going to be day-by-day."

It shouldn't be.

Saturday was enough.

I am not saying Jones shouldn't be the guy, but the author is drawing definitive conclusions after Jones completed less than half his passes and threw two picks.

If he isn't the starting QB, he could easily help as an OLB. Did you see the hit he put on Powell after the INT? He smashed him... lol

Afterwards, he said his arm was a little tired and that he could throw farther.

Wow guys.

Honestly I'm not sure, even though I'd love to have it here in Cleveland, but there in Columbus - I'm not sure having three stud QBs is something I'd want to have to deal with. All young guys, all with talents, all could and likely go to the NFL at some point probably and etc etc.

I was really hoping that Braxton would just go elsewhere just, and only just, for the sole reason of having two other great qbs on the roster. He can go and be a day-one starter (as with the other two IMO) anywhere.

Who do you start? Why are you starting him over the others? WIll there be a rotation at that position? All questions that Urban will have to address at some point.

That 74 yard bomb from Cardale is beastly though. And he could throw it further? It was a pleasure watching him truck people on the scramble game! LOVE THAT CARDALE JONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a single Buckeye was drafted in the first round.

That's compared to 5 players (including 3 of the first 4) drafted from the other BCS semifinalists (Oregon, Alabama & Florida State)

Who will even be the first Buckeye drafted? The team is loaded with above average players throughout the roster.

Urban Meyer is an incredible coach. Especially on Game Day.

He had first round talent on the team, it's just that none of it was available in this draft.

Hi job is not to make kids NFL first rounders, his job is to coach kids become better players, better humans, a win games for OSU. If they become NFL first rounders, all the better, but that isn't his focus.

Through two rounds, 11 players drafted from Florida State, Alabama & Oregon.

One from the National Champion Buckeyes.

That's amazing and an incredible indication of team depth and TEAM talent.

The Buckeyes had a lot of freshman and sophomores on the team. There is a reason they said that they were a year early and next year was the year they were supposed to compete for a NT. The Buckeyes have many players who would have been drafted in the 1st and 2nd round but they are not eligible to be in this years draft.

Walter Football has 2 Buckeyes going in the first three picks next year. Bosa going to Tennessee and Cardale coming home to the Browns.

That's Alabama-esque.

That's a testament to the incredible coaching ability of Urban Meyer.

He is obviously:

1) An amazing judge of talent and personality
2) A terrific recruiter, and
3) an unbelievable coach both in developing his players and utilizing their strengths on game day.

Meyer's ticket to Atlanta is already punched.

I hope Joey wants to come back for his senior year to play along side his brother Nick. Nick just may be Joey 2.0.

We will not be picking 2nd next year.

If I were a betting man, I would put every penny I have on that. (and fortunately, all I have are pennies) wink
