'Report: Steelers safety Troy Polamalu retiring' http://news.yahoo.com/report-steelers-safety-troy-polamalu-retiring-025811772--spt.htmlPITTSBURGH (AP) — Troy Polamalu's iconic football career is over. The eight-time Pro Bowl safety told the Uniontown Herald-Standard he informed Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney on Thursday night he will retire rather than return for a 13th season. The 33-year-old Polamalu had two years remaining on his contract but saw his play dip significantly from his prime, which peaked when he was named the 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Polamalu was limited to 12 games in 2014 due to a leg injury. Polamalu told the newspaper he realized maybe it was time to go when he started debating whether he could make the commitment necessary to play another season. The newspaper reported the Steelers asked Polamalu to retire in February but he did not make a decision until this week. (end)

Great Player, I won't miss him. Good Luck Troy. Ditto. I sincerely hope that he enjoys his retirement. I will not miss the seemingly endless big plays he made against us.

definitely a weapon well used over the years. One of the few Eastern Orthodox Christian playing any sport - not called soccer.
Steelers asked him to retire, so it is not a gap they have to all of a sudden fill. They were prepared to move on. Doesn't matter whoever they get there it will be a downgrade.
jmho - respect his prowess, good luck and hope he comes out healthy from his career.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

He was unstoppable in his prime. He was so versatile, I don't think there was a spot he didn't line up or an assignment he didn't carry out.
I always enjoy watching him time the snap and leaping over olines. Even though he was an enemy, he was very fun to watch and extremely gifted.
Good luck to him.

Between like 2005 and 2012 he was completely dominant ... one of the best safeties to ever play
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Glad he's retiring.
I respect the fact that he was a hell of a safety, but because he played for Pittsburgh and did so much to hurt the Browns over the years, I don't like him, his face or his long girly hair.
Good riddance.

I agree. And I want to add that he had freaky instincts. When he was allowed to go rogue and set where he wanted or moved, he was an absolute chore. And we helped establish his rep. Happy retirement, but won't miss the carnage he caused.

I think in the last 2-3 years his gambling style and free-lancing at the LOS hurt the Steelers as much as helped them. In his prime though, he was great. I won't miss him. I hope they sign Hank Poteat to replace him.

It's crazy the guys that we had to face two times a year over the years (Harrison, Reed, Lewis, Suggs, etc.), but Polamalu was the one I feared the most. He could do literally anything on the field.

I bet Troy did not want to retire, but the Steelers didn't want him back and he decided to pack it in whether than go to another team and falter like Ed Reed did.
Man, the Steelers' organization is merciless. They always part ways w/legends.
I thought Troy was a great player. He certainly has declined in recent years due to all the injuries and advancing age, but he was like a torpedo when he was in his prime. Never saw a guy who was so explosive and deadly in a straight line. Great freaking instincts and athleticism.
I also thought he always handled himself w/class. Very soft spoken guy. Terror on the field. Humble and quiet off the field. I respect that.
This is one of those stories that remind me of why I never blame a player for leaving a team for more money or a better opportunity.
There is no loyalty in professional sports.

In terms of consistent great play, Reed was superior. But there was a two or three year stretch where I thought Polamalu was the Michael Jordan of the NFL. He was also helped considerably by the Steelers recognizing what he was good at and letting him be. He was a cerebral player that had a feel for what was going to happen. I think they told Clark to play center field and they told Polamalu to do whatever he wanted to do. I don't think there was any system in place for him.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I appreciate all of these classy posts. He was an amazing player to watch over the years. I remember my son Edwin going to Steelers training camp in Latrobe and getting Troy's autograph. Troy was always willing to give autographs to the kids.

I always liked watching him time the snaps and jump the line of scrimmage. But, I'll really like watching him in street clothes and not lined up against us. Best of luck in his retirement, but glad to see him go.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Man, the Steelers' organization is merciless. They always part ways w/legends. Merciless Nah. FO savvy, prudent and smart, is a sign of a franchise that will do what is necessary and best for the team to win. He's had his glory and the Steelers FO is doing exactly what great NFL franchises do.....want another example....look at the Patriots.

Wasn't it Troys decision to retire? The article says that the Steelers asked Polamalu to retire earlier this year.
