Hey guys, long time no read. Been absent on here due to apathy towards Browns caused by owner/FO.
The apathy was strong enough to give up my "GM spot" mocking the Browns, a game, as many of you know, I've participated for about 10 years running now. I was lucky enough to hand over the decisions to another Browns fan who assisted last year and this year I'm his assistant when it comes down to deciding who to mocj draft for the Browns out of a handful of options.
The 1st round has come and gone and here it is:
Round 1:
#1 Buccaneers - Jameis Winston, QB, FSU #2 Titans - Leonard Williams, DE, USC #3 Jaguars - Dante Fowler Jr., DE, Florida #4 Raiders - Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama #5 Redskins - Vic Beasley, LB, Clemson #6 Jets - Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon #7 Bears - Kevin White, WR, West Virginia #8 Falcons - Randy Gregory, DE, Nebraska #9 Saints (from Giants) - Shane Ray, DE, Missouri #10 Eagles (from Rams) - Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State #11 Chargers (from Vikings) - Danny Shelton, DT, Washington #12 Browns - Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami #13 Giants (from Saints) - Alvin Dupree, DE, Kentucky #14 Dolphins - Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia #15 49ers - DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville #16 Rams (from Texans) - Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa #17 Vikings (from Chargers) - La'el Collins, OT, LSU #18 Browns (from Chiefs) - Malcom Brown, DT, Texas #19 Chiefs (from Browns) - Arik Armstead, DE, Oregon #20 Texans (from Eagles via Rams) - Breshad Perriman, WR, UCF #21 Bengals - D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida #22 Steelers - Jalen Collins, CB, LSU #23 Lions - Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford #24 Cardinals - Marcus Peters, CB, Washington #25 Panthers - Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington #26 Ravens - Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin #27 Cowboys - Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest #28 Broncos - Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma #29 Colts - Eddie Goldman, DT/NT, FSU #30 Packers - Eric Kendricks, LB, UCLA #31 Saints - Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State #32 Jaguars (from Patriots) - Cameron Erving, OL, FSU
Explanation for the Browns selections:
This draft is incredibly thin. I've yet to see 10 prospects who are worth a 1st round grade and who are potentially day one ready three down players. Both Flowers and M.Brown are fringy, but they have immense upside and bring a lot of NFL ready traits. Flowers frankly was the best OL prospect I've seen in this draft. Not sure what people see in Scherff, he reminds me of Sua-Filo, who's busting I called out loud last year. Anyway, Flowers has the tenacity, will, physical attributes to become a good starter at the NFL level. He's very young still and could be brought along slowly as a 6th OL. I'd let him compete with both Greco and Schwartz for RG/RT duties. If an injury on the OL occurs (and we know they always do), he gets inserted, no matter who gets injured, as Greco can slide to C if it'd be Mack again.
M.Brown was fun to watch on tape. He's not a NT, not without gaining strength the next 2 TCs at least, but he's a day one ready interior disruptor that can line up in multiple places and fronts. The Browns lacked this kind of interior rush for several years now. He also has incredible instincts in the trash, always knowing where the ball is. I liked him over both Shelton and Goldman, that's why the little uptrade (cost the 5th) to secure him.
Opinions? Thoughts? My suggestion for the 2nd rounder is WR Agholor. Very underrated big school WR/PR. Like him over some of the WR already picked. He's actually the 3rd best WR on my board, over both Strong and Parker (and Perriman). I see much more than just a slot-WR. He's a complete WR imho

I would have taken Parker with the pick 12, but if you get Agholor in the 2nd round I understand passing. Agholor is probably my favorite wide receiver in the draft.

No complaints about what transpired. I personally would have probably not done the trade, but I get why you did to get the guy you wanted.
I'm a fan of picking Agholor in the 2nd. I like Odighizuwa as well, but I'd bet he'd be gone.
edit: the closer we get to the draft, the more I think that if we want a "2nd tier" QB, we'll need to take one in the 2nd. I'm not sure Hundley, Petty, or Grayson lasts to the 3rd any more.

This is an A+ in my book.
Flowers, Brown and Agholor would be very welcome additions to the Browns.

As crazy as it sounds, I think a team will trade up into the mid/late-20's and take Petty.

Really unfortunate that Shelton didn't make it to your pick.
I'm not a huge believer that the Browns should spend yet another pick on an offensive lineman, but if they were, I'd use it on Flowers. I wouldn't take Brown to be a NT, as you said, but as a 3-Tech, he could be very good IMO.
Overall, I'd give it about a B+. Didn't fill glaring needs, just missed on getting Shelton, and didn't take a WR when you could. That being said, you got good player who will be in the NFL a long time as starters.
you had a good run Hank.

The Browns would trade up to #22 It's a such a dumb idea that it very well could happen Maybe I'm behind, but did Petty do enough at the combine and his pro-day to warrant a low 1st round pick? Don't get me wrong, I'm a very big Bryce Petty fan and would be tickled if we DID draft him, but in the 1st round? With WR, OLB, NT and RT all needing upgrades, I would hate to reach on a QB like Petty who probably won't be able to start right away...

I'm not keen on taking a RT with our #12 pick, but if the the draft is weak as people claim it to be, and it is a correct upgrade to an important unit, then fine....do it. I would agree with poster(s) that I would prefer Parker, but it's not that important.
I really like the Malcolm Brown selection even with the trade up. I'm a firm believer in doing what you feel is necessary to get the person you really like, even if it's one spot. I think there is a lot of uncertainty with our line-- from Taylor heading back to NT, Des Bryant poor 2014 campaign (fit?) replacing Rubin in terms of depth, addressing overall runs woes, etc. Brown would potentially help mightily in that category.
I'm curious to know what you guy might have been thinking at #19 if Brown was already gone and if Danny Shelton was still on the board at #12, would you have taken him over Flowers?....
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Almost every mock I see (from the experts and the non-experts) has us taking some combination of DL and OL in the first round. So I have already accepted that it's not going to happen. We are probably going to take a TE and trade the other pick into next year.

Sorry for the late update. We got Agholor in round 2, here's the complete round:
Round 2:
#33 Titans - Landon Collins, S, Alabama #34 Buccaneers - Nate Orchard, DE, Utah #35 Raiders - Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA #36 Patriots (from Jaguars) - Byron Jones, CB, Connecticut #37 Jets - Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Oklahoma #38 Redskins - Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon #39 Bears - Paul Dawson, LB, TCU #40 Giants - TJ Clemmings, OT, Pitt #41 Rams - AJ Cann, OG, South Carolina #42 Falcons - Maxx Williams, TE, Minnesota #43 Browns - Nelson Agholor, WR, USC #44 Saints - Benardrick McKinney, LB, Miss State #45 Vikings - Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State #46 49ers - PJ Williams, CB, FSU #47 Dolphins - Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami (Fl) #48 Vikings (from Chargers) - Denzel Perryman, LB, Miami #49 Chiefs - Rashad Greene, WR, FSU #50 Bills - Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke #51 Titans (from Texans) - Eli Harold, LB Virginia #52 Rams (from Eagles) - Reese Dismukes, C, Auburn #53 Bengals - Carl Davis, DT, Iowa #54 Seahawks (from Lions) - Preston Smith, DE, Mississippi State #55 Cardinals - Stephone Anthony, LB, Clemson #56 Steelers - Hau'oli Kikaha, OLB, Washington #57 Panthers - Quinten Rollins, CB, Miami (Oh) #58 Ravens - Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn #59 Broncos - Cedric Ogbuehi, OT, Texas A&M #60 Cowboys - Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana #61 Colts - Eric Rowe, CB/S, Utah #62 Packers - Ronald Darby, CB, FSU #63 Lions (from Seahawks) - Jay Ajayi, RB, Boise State #64 Patriots - Michael Bennett, DT, Ohio State
Suggestions for round 3? I honestly have no clue this year, I just watch a bunch of guys who the GM of this draft feels like worth drafting at the spot. I still want CB Gunter and RB Robinson, but it seems both can be had later. The GM wants Samford SS J. Tartt. Have watched the 2014 tape vs Auburn and didn't like what I saw, the next P.Desir at best. Kind of pick Farmer makes, lol. I strongly advised against him, we will see.

tell him to watch some Anthony Jefferson of UCLA. He's a very nice tackler at the LOS but he's amazing in coverage. UCLA had him matched up one-on-one for parts of the AZ State game and Jefferson owned him. The difference between when #23 was on him and any other player was like night and day.

If Xavier Cooper is still available in the third I would strongly suggest him if you are planning on taking 2 DL. Neithr guy is a nose tackle though.
*edit* nonononono Clive Walford is still available? If he's there you have to draft him. Probably BPA right now anyways and our biggest roster hole (besides QB of course.)

In the 3rd round you should still be looking for guys that can contribute almost immediately.

Yeldon, RB, Alabama #94 Packers - Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan #95 Seahawks - Tony Lippett, CB(WR), Michigan State #96 Bears (from Patriots) - comp#97 Patriots - comp#98 Chiefs - comp#99 Bengals -
Browns mock so far:
12 OT Ereck Flowers 18 DL Malcom Brown 43 WR Nelson Agholor 77 DL Xavier Cooper
Cooper just had too much good tape to bypass. He's another interior disruptor, blowing up the OL, creating holes for blitzing LB. Most see M.Brown and Cooper as better fits for a 4-3, but in todays game of heavy rotation and front changes it has become almost irrelevant. Part of the pass rush struggle for the Browns was the lack of those quick penetrating types along the DL, which was full of heavy footed guys. With Rubin leaving and A.Bryant going back to OLB, there's enough roster space and need at DL. Taylor and Kitchen at NT, rotation of D.Bryant, Winn, the too rooks at DE with Hughes as NT/DE, there's your 7 men rotation at DL. Still thinking about adding NT Terry Williams (East Carolina) with a late pick to battle Kitchen.
Targets for round 4 and beyond include: CB Ekpre-Olomu, OLB Mauldin (who was almost the pick at 77), OG Matias, CB Gunter, RB Robinson
Feel free to suggest other players, as I am not as informed about this draft as I used to be

If you end up missing out on Terry Williams later and still want a nose tackle, take a look at Justin Hamilton from ULL.
Who are you looking at for center? My favorites still available are Gallik and Max Garcia.

This is the Browns mock draft we came up with, I'll post the entire mock once it's finished:
12 OT Ereck Flowers, Miami (FL) 18 DL Malcom Brown, Texas 43 WR Nelson Agholor, USC 77 DL Xavier Cooper, Washington State 102 CB Ekpre-Olomu, Oregon 111 RB Josh Robinson, Mississippi State 202 TE Rory Anderson, South Carolina 229 CB/FS Ladarius Gunter, Miami (FL)
Haven't studied this class as in epth as in past years, but I'm pretty happy with this outcome.
Flowers is the best OT I saw with immense upside left and a high floor due to position flexibility. High upside/high floor prospect.
Brown and Cooper have similar games. Very disruptive. Brown is a little stouter vs the run and overall has more of a NFL ready game now, whereas Cooper is incredibly quick off the snap, but not strong enough yet. Effort vs the run is there though. I see both in a heavy DL rotation, giving Pettine a lot of flexibility depending on down and distance...and most importantly, more rush and collapsing pockets from the middle
Agholor is a plug and play WR with return skills. Between him, Bowe, Hartline, Hawkins and Gabriel, the WR core is set and has a lot of flexibility
E-O is pretty much a redshirt stash, a pure value gamble. If trading a 4th in a weak draft for a 3rd next draft is good value, then investing a 4th for a top 50 talent should be great value, right?
Josh Robinson is just one of my favs of this draft class. His tape reminded me of Devonta Freeman and there are some Tolbert comps around the webs. He's a competitor, tough to bring down, has good vision, can catch, gives effort blocking. He's a three down RB, simple as that. Just watch his game vs LSU, which is basically a NFL farm defense.
Rory Anderson is a pure upside gamble. He tore his biceps last season and played through it "with one arm". So much about his toughness. Would have gone much higher. Not a great blocker, but the effort and body is there to work on it, so there's upside. Good receiving TE. Goodley would have been the pick here, but I detected him too late in the process and he was picked just about 10 spots ahead of...
...L.Gunter, another one of my favs. After the season he was a consensus 2nd/3rd round pick. Then he ran a 4.7 and now he's an UDFA? There's also a reverse Mike Mamula effect I guess. The tape doesn't lie, he's a good DB, if not fast enough at CB, then he'll make a good FS conversion project. He likes to anticipate anyway, might make a good ballhawking FS. I saw a lot of EJ Gaines, who I had as a top 5 CB last season. He dropped to the 6th and was a rookie starter for the Rams.
Feel free to comment...

I'd take this draft and be happy. Only major regret here is not getting a center. There are probably several opportunities for pass rushers in UDFA.

I like the draft.. I would probably go with Brown at 12 and then take Cameron Erving at 19. Erving can play any position in the OL and would be a plug in for whatever could happen next year with the possibility of losing Schwartz or Mack, but I have no real complaints with what you did.

I would be happy with this draft. One thing I would probably do differently is take Langford over Robinson at RB. I did notice that Danielle Hunter DE dropped pretty far as I think I have seen hime projected to go in the second round I may have taken him over Xavier Cooper seeing that we drafted DT in the first. Although quiet honestly I am no expert and may be off base on both picks.

Uh, no. #12. S/B Gurley or Dupree. We need another high OL like we need a hole in the head.

If Farmer is going for the golden sombrero and wants to make it 4 for 4 in 1st round busts, he selects 2 out of Scherff, Parker and Dupree. And Dupree is the worst of them (and I really dislike the other two). Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. Total pretender.
I won't even watch the 1st round, since I don't need a re-run of that sinking feeling that I'm being a fan of a team run by a minion working for an idiot. They can really only positively surprise me at this point. I expect the worst. Thankfully I'll be getting drunk at a friend's birthday party.

Flowers is probably the pick I like the most. I would be good with Dupree there, too. Gurley not so much. Pre-injury absolutely. I don't care if the knee looks good in scans, I want to see him play on it before I use that high a pick.
I'm not as high as you, Django, on Brown. At least not for us. I'd prefer Phillips at nose, and we could probably get him without trading up.
I'd prefer Dupree, Flowers, Phillips but think we might just miss them with the way the picks look to play out. Should be an interesting draft.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Always nice to see what other people think.
