The Browns entered this year's draft needing help just about everywhere, so we shouldn't bash them for not addressing every spot. But various rumored moves failed to happen, which leaves the team's offensive depth chart an uninteresting mess. We're looking at a Manziel-McCown battle ahead at QB, a three-headed mess at RB, and Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline as the top two receivers. That's just ... um ... well, it's pretty terrible......
Our mission today is to identify NFL veterans who've made the biggest moves in terms of projected 2015 fantasy value, based on their team's draft decisions.
While I can't disagree about the Manziel/McCown QB battle being less than exciting....
I am however completely content with our three headed monster at running back with Crowell, West and Johnson. I also have absolutely no beef with Bowe, Hartline, Hawkins and Gabriel being our primary receivers.
Wish we could have snagged a more proven tightend a little earlier, but hopefully Houser works out.
I think the roster is in much better looking shape than it was last season when we were expected to only win a few games....
"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"
We're going to be near the bottom of everybody's power rankings.
With our QB situation one couldn't expect any better.
I read one post-draft power ranking that had us at 29 or 30... it said if we had drafted a WR early, we could have been 6 or 7 spots higher... Because of one rookie WR.. that would have been the difference to make us better than 6 or 7 other teams.
But if we mortgaged the farm for Marriota, or over-drafted one of the other QBs, we wouldn't be in any better of a situation heading into the season. For context, I wasn't a fan of drafting Marriota, much less trading up to get him.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
I seem to recall that they had us 30th after last year's draft ..... so we're movin' on up.
We're going to win at least 9 games this coming season. bank it.

9-7 would be a very successful season. Too bad it looks like a 1-15ish to me. Tired D + No QB/Playmakers = What's new?
Like so many other years, it all hinges on QB play... Just slightly above average QB play and we could win 9 games... rotating through 2 or 3 bad QBs and we'll win 3 or 4... I don't see any way that we only win 1.
With that said, I'd almost rather win 1 than 4.. 4 will end up getting us the 2 or 3 pick...
Bank it. We will win at least 9 games this coming year.
This is a very good team with a potentially tough situation at QB. People freak out about McCown, but he is going to be asked to do very little next year. Manziel may win the starting job. Who knows? Regardless, though, I expect that the QB will be expected to play a very controlled game, and the run game and defense will rule the day.

The Browns needed help JUST ABOUT everywhere and they addressed that. What is so idiotic about that?
The Browns QB situation is Manziel/McCown. How is that wrong? He didn't even rip them. And if you think about it.......the entire season might start/end right there. Our QB situation looks DREADFUL. And not one of you can convince me otherwise.
He said the RB situation was a three-headed mess. I disagree w/that take, but do any of you know how we are going to use the RBs this year? Is it really that idiotic?
Bowe and Hartline are probably are top two WRs. That IS pretty freaking terrible. And the guy did NOT even mention the lack of talent at TE.
Going into 2014 a lot of "experts" predicted we would finish 4-12.
We had a dozen question marks, and an offense that seemingly lacked talent.
Yet, we ran the football effectively, got average quarterback play, and our defense kept the score manageable in virtually every game for the offense.
Is our roster going into 2015 better? I would say so...
We have the most talented roster we've had since returning in 1999 and our list of needs is as small as it's been since returning as well.
In my opinion our roster looks better now than it did a year ago, so these writers can go ahead and call this a bad team, I don't really care.
If we can run the football and control the line of scrimmage, our receivers will be fine. Dwayne Bowe, Brian Hartline, Andrew Hawkins and a more polished and experienced Taylor Gabriel should be a lot better than the group we had early last year at receiver. Rob Housler is a question mark, but how much did Cameron contribute to our wins last year? All I remember was him going off against Pittsburgh and that's it.
The defensive line has been reloaded (Randy Starks, Danny Shelton, Xavier Cooper and Nate Orchard), and now Armonty Bryant and Phil Taylor are healthy.
This roster is in a MUCH better place than it was a year ago and now all of our young players have experience. If we can run the football and the defense is as strong as they should be, I think we can win games an get the same amount of production out of McCown that we did Hoyer.

All we need is for Johnny Manziel or Josh McCown to merely play smart and just be average.
McCown, who is our likely starter at this point, has been average or better for almost none of his career. He's been in the league since 2002, we know what he is.
Manziel is a longshot at this point. Anyone who says otherwise is being overly optimistic.

I don't disagree with you.
I just know our offensive line, running game, and defense should all be a lot better than what he had in Tampa last year. I guess I'm just trying to look on the bright side and wish for the best.

So am I. But at the same time you have to be realistic. McCown has been in the league since 2002 and has never been good.
We had no QB last year. Talk Hoyer up all you want, but there is a reason he went undrafted. How many tight windows did he hammer the ball into with accuracy? Yes he hit some wide open receivers, but even that seemed to be a 50-50 proposition (and maybe worse) by the end of the year. I hope any starting college QB could do that. Was Hoyer calling the protections when he was doing well? I think that was Mack.
With open receivers and a clean pocket, I think McCown can match "good" Hoyer. Hoyer was a home town guy and a feel good story, but how about you be honest, Vers. There is a reason he went undrafted. McCown could very well blow up in our faces, but he was a third round pick and has better tools than Hoyer. We're not asking him to single-handedly win games for us. This will be the best group of surrounding players McCown has played with.
You mess with the "Bull," you get the horns. Fiercely Independent.

You call this less than average? LOL!!!!!!!!!! I call it playing like a Brown!
On a side note, I think you've had a Browns induced nervous break down. You seem to be rolling on the ground laughing a lot lately for no apparent reason. Perhaps you should seek medical attention.

That's dishonest. He hit all kinds of receivers in tight windows. His deep balls were ugly, but he put the ball on the money on all kinds of intermediate routes.
And what does not having a qb last year have to do w/this coming year? Absolutely nothing. You were just deflecting. That sure in honest debate.
Not having a QB last year to me means that there won't be as big a drop as the "woe is me-ers" are predicting. The 1-15 predictions and knocking McCown at every opportunity irritate me. He's our QB now, give him a chance.
Maybe the end of the season is stronger in my mind and Hoyer hit lots of receivers in tight windows with velocity at the beginning of the year. I don't remember it. He definitely looked awful the second half of the season. He got the job done at times, but I don't remember ever thinking, "Wow, what a great throw by Hoyer." I liked Hoyer and wanted him to succeed, but he's a journeyman, and he regressed. I think McCown can play comparably to Hoyer, and the rest of our team should be better/healthier.
Looked up Hoyer's 2014 highlights. I see a bunch of open receivers getting passed to. I'll give you a couple borderline "great" throws, but even on his highlights a ton of underthrows. Maybe I'm thinking tight coverage when I'm saying tight window? I dunno. I don't see great placement, I don't see Hoyer throwing his receivers open.

Have you watched McCown play? Have you? Hoyer is the better QB and that is very, very sad. That leaves us with nada, zilch, nothing at the QB position. I want to see Danny Shelton take a few snaps instead of the circus of QB's on this team. Thanks "texting" GM.
Hoyer played in a more wide open offense in Arizona, under Whisenhunt. He was so-so, at best. He came to Cleveland, and played in the WCO under Norv Turner and Shanahan. He played well early, but really came apart after the 1st half (at best) in his season starting in Cleveland. This was his best offensive situation. He is best in a heavily controlled offense, with a very strong run game. We saw him in the best of circumstances last year.
We now have McCown. Last year was not his best opportunity to win. In 2013, in Chicago, he played 5 games at a very high level, with 13 TD and only 1 INT. He played in the WCO in Chicago. He then went to Tampa Bay, to play in a different style offense. Then their coordinator became ill. There were reports that the guy who took over as OC was a disaster, and couldn't put together a coherent game-plan. McCown was in a poor fit offense, and had poor game-planning.
It will be interesting to see how he does in Cleveland in an offense that should fit his abilities, and in which he will be surrounded by a solid run game, a great OL, and veteran receivers. He also should have the best defense he has ever played alongside.
I don't know if he can be a good QB here, but I am hopeful that he can play at an acceptable level, if he has to play. My hope is that Manziel busts his backside and wins the job, and shows everyone why we drafted him. (in a positive way)
I do think that if McCown is forced to play that he will play at a level similar to that which Hoyer played at last year.
Let's also look at one more thing. Both McCown and Hoyer were free agents last year. Which guy had the most interest? NFL teams are desperate for QB talent. Which guy appeared to have the most teams pursuing him? I think that tells a lot also.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
How do you know McCown had more interest than Hoyer? Also, if I recall correctly McCown was released so he could negotiate sooner, while Hoyer had to wait for the start of the league year.
They cannot even run their email site...lol Football.
3 man RB a Mess??? that sort of took me aback as a credibility loser.
RB is as simple as it gets and if they get that wrong what about QB well honestly we are definitely UNCERTAIN how Manziel will progress if not we are back to MEDIOCRE like we have been almost every year since 1999. I don't see what they think we could have done. We did explore just about all options out there. Oh we didn't take one 3rd round or later? yeah I know like that is where you go to immediately change your QB situation...otay
WR...I won't be redundant...lets just say if you got a fantasy team...I wouldn't recommend picking one of ours early (not quite sure how fantasy drafting works). All I know is we shouldn't have killer stats.
jmho - YAHOO??? Guess its the old adage of Opions....everyone has one. RB's a mess... smh
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!
