I don't like that Idea at all, why don't we just have KW2 cover onside kicks again.

I don't like that idea either, however, for your Winslow statement - Ladanian Tomlinson is on SD hands team just like Winslow for us when he got hurt.

Let me guess, this is how the conversation went:

Coach: we have lots of players on our team that are good like sean jones
Reporter: who will return punts?
Coach: we have lots players on our team that can return punts

99% of these little soundbites are just reporters making crap up

I don't trust a single thing she writes about. She was 100% sure the Browns were taking Quinn with the 3rd pick a day before the draft. And she never even mentioned that Thomas was a potential pick. Oh well....

And Sean or Eric have no business back there. I thought that Steptoe guy was drafted for punt returns?

We should just let Cribbs do it all. He doesn't do anything else but kickoffs, why not let golden flash take over for Northcutt. He certainly is one of my favorite players.

Sounds like a load of crap to me.

I'd prefer that it'd be someone who wasn't essential to our offense or defense.

Actually this was straight from Crennel's mouth. Its on one of the Rookie Camp video interviews. He said that Sean Jones returned some punts in college and we'd look at him to do the same for us among some other players.

I think Cribbs needs more experiance returnng punts to be a full time punt returner. I believe the cornerbacks make better punt returners. I dont know why, but most of the better oners are CBs.

I'm not crazy about that idea either. Let's see if Perkins can finally earn a roster spot. Perhaps Steptoe will make an impression. Heck, give Cribbs another shot at it in camp. Just don't put a key starter back there. Please.

Don't discount Wright as our punt returner. My guess is that he and Perkins (assuming he makes the roster ) are the two leading guys. Now Jones? Don't bet on it.

I don't mind some starters on special teams so much as long as after the play, they are leaving the field.

I burns me up to see a starting backer as an example race 70yards to cover a kick-off, the stay on the field to play his position.

Just seems like we are trying to wear people out.

Plus....coaching staffs have moaned about the size of the roster but don't play 1/3 of the players.

We might as well go back to 45 man rosters if only about 25-30 guys ever get to play.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Yeah, why don't we just put Steptoe at PR, like he's supposed to be. They guy is a physical freak, he played WR, QB, PR, KR, and also CB.

he said it on an interview on the cleveland browns web page... can't remember which one it is.. but I think RAC was just throwing names out there...

i really dont think Sean Jones needs to be out there returning punts.. cuz teams know how important he is to our defense, and they might throw some cheap shots...

just let Cribbs, or Steptoe do it.. man it feels weird typing his name.. lol.

Say NO to Sean Jones OR any regular starter returning punts.
If we do not have someone that can, we can pick someone up when June cuts come along, or with cutdowns for final roster happen.
I just know our luck and someone important to the defense would get hurt.
So, PLEASE, no Sean Jones returning punts.

Cribbs is getting another shot at it. In that interview Crennel said Cribbs scared him with those drops last year and he was going to give Cribbs some extra time to get more accustomed to fielding punts.

On the note of Jones returning punts... if he's the best we have at it, then you put him out there doing it. Again, for those that don't get it... with Winslow and the 'Hands Team', Butch was correct.... everyone bashing Butch was wrong (in this particular case ).

You only have 53 roster spots and only 45 are active on game day... you MUST make the most of each spot and that means putting your best players on the field in every situation possible.

You are correct.
But,anyone who saw Jones dropping INT's last year, would have to wonder about his ability to field punts.I hope we've gotten past Quincy Morgan Football.

Theres a huge difference between catching an INT and feilding a punt.

he did have like 7 or something last year anyways.

Sean Jones isn't going to be returning punts this year guys, relax.

It wouldn't surprise me if he fielded a few in practice and could fill in during an emergency situation, but don't count on it ever happening.

The good thing is that the Browns have a number of candidates to return punts. Personally, I like McDonald to get the job.

It's a bit early, however, to worry about who the guy will be. The final decision is months away.

general reply....

what alot of you are forgetting is that on gameday we might not activate a guy just to return punts....

take perkins for example....if he's not a good enough d-back then i doubt we use him...

wright....he probably can, but he's looking to be a starting cb too...

some of these draft picks might not make the game day roster so we would have to go with a starter in a duel role....

cribbs might grow into it, and thats fine....

right now he does only kickoffs, but is good enough as a 4th reciever...

i doubt we burn another spot for just a punt returner....we need that guy to produce in some other way i.e special teams...or depth...

if a starter can fill a duel role then that give us the option of dressing another linebacker, or lineman on gameday...this might be needed because of injuries, or for a certain scheme for a certain team...

If you watch the RAC interview, it is pretty obvious that Cribbs has to improve as a punt returner, or the Briwns will find another punt returner. He even laughed about it.

This should come as no surprise, Dropcutt could not catch a pass from a QB, but he did cleanly field punts.

If I had to pick between the two, I'd go with Wright. He's a bit more slippery and elusive.

I'm hoping Steptoe ends up as the PR though.

Toad, I can agree with the thought that it's not likely that Jones will be returning punts, I mean, that would put him in the line of fire even more than playing Safety and we are not so deep at Safety that we could really afford to lose Jones, especially after the way he came on last season.

Hey PPE, I can agree with you, as well, we should have our best players on the field all of the time, however, I think using Jones as punt retuner is taking too much of a risk at him getting injured. If he goes down then we are just that much thinner in the secondary and we don''t have a Safety that has stepped up and played like Jones did last season, at least not yet. Hamilton has promise, Pool needs to turn the light on, and the others can't be great, if they were we'd know. I look for a depth position guy to return punts.

Oh Hell No, after his muffs last season, I don't want to see him anywhere near a punt return. Somebody said last season that KR and PR are 2 completely different animals, I agree. Cribbs is coming into his own at KR but I dont think he fits the mold of a PR. A PR needs to be elusive and have a lot of agility. That's not Cribbs.

It is definatley two different specialties. Watch a kick-off and a punt return closely. Kick-off returns are much more like a set play. Blockers are set to block for the returner to go a certian direction, there are more head up blocks. The Returner knows which direction the return is supposed to go and should (like Cirbbs does) just put his head down and go. While I know that they are all a little helter-skelter, Kick-offs seem to be more of controlled chaos.

Punt-returns are much more ad-lib, pretty much block the man in front of you, look for someone else to block and NEVER quit on the play because younever know when the returner is going to turn your direction, that's why you see more "blocks in the back" than on Kick-off returns. The returner here has more room to improvise, he has to be quicker, the key to a decent punt return is making the first guy miss, if you can do that you have a pretty decent shot at having a decent return.

In both cases though, to be any good you must have some courage, in one case to meet some crazy guy with a 40 yrd. running start, while you have a good 10 or 15 yrd start, head on. In the other case you have got to trust you blockers to keep guys off of you long enough to just give you a chance to catch the damn ball before you even see which way you are going to run.

Tim Carter is a WR, so he should have some speed and agility, although, from what I've heard he's had some injuries and we don't exactly have a great wealth of talented WR's. So I'm not sure I'd want an experienced WR returning punts, then again, his experience could help? I look for it to be one of the younger guys. Harrison would be idea if he could field the ball without muffing it. Maybe if Steptoe has some speed and agility he could step in and step it up to be the PR. (Ok, sorry for the step jokes.)
