Residents at an Irvine, California, apartment complex were in for an unpleasant surprise when they stepped into the building’s elevator last night. A flier reminding tenants to keep it down at night pointed to black renters as the primary offenders.

A new poster had appeared on two different elevators in Toscana Apartments. The start of the message is innocuous enough, asking residents to be mindful of their neighbors by turning down their TVs and stereos in the evening hours.

But the second half—in bold text—is flagrantly racist: “We also would like to remind our African-American residents to keep conversation volume down and reduce music levels between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.”

The offending image picked up speed on social media, with some questioning whether the image had been doctored. An Instagram user and tenant, who identifies herself as “TT” under the handle @teyent_theequeenb, posted an incriminating video of the poster, deflating accusations of it having been photoshopped.

And while the poster seemingly exists, that doesn’t mean the real estate company is responsible.

Equity Residential, a national company that owns Toscana Apartments along with properties in roughly a dozen states across the country, has denied any association.

“Neither Equity Residential nor Toscana Apartments created or posted this flier. We are outraged by its content and are actively investigating its source,” the company posted on Facebook.

Equity spokesperson Marty McKenna maintains that the flier is not consistent with how management typically handles noise complaints, preferring to discuss violations on an individual basis, Gawker reports.

Though the origins of the flier are unknown—possibly a racist tenant or a rogue employee created it—this instance highlights discrimination within the Orange County suburban area and its neighboring university. Black residents make up a small portion of Orange County’s population, with 74 percent white residents and 2 percent black, according to 2013 census figures. Black people represent just 1.7 percent of the Irvine community.

Although the building is not affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, some of its students live at Toscana Apartments. UCI has a storied history of racist grievances, including videos created by fraternities in which members sport blackface and hold paddles labeled “slave driver,” documented in a petition from the black student union this year requesting additional resources for black students.

In the meantime, TT is hoping she can finish her college career despite the discrimination following her home. “Lord give me strength to finish school in Irvine,” she wrote as her Instagram caption.

I live in an apartment over a business, next door to a 50-something year old guy (white guy) who BLASTS his stereo, sometimes starting at 6 AM in the morning, for an hour or so. It is not that loud for me because he cranks it up in his living room and that is a couple of rooms away from me but his neighbors on the other side of the wall must hate him at times. He has had the owner come up once or twice, or sometimes the owner will send one of his employees up to ask him to lower it. He mostly plays music that girls don't like, I'm thinking like 70's music, "non-sexual in nature," (doesn't have that groove), music that mostly guys like (like Emerson, Lake & Palmer/whatnot).

Point is most of the time no one wants to hear someone else's music. He could always use headphones or earbuds, but when you don't care, you don't care.

And that's why it's important to not have neighbors... Or learn how to dampen the sound.

Believe-you-me, if I could afford to live out in the country with some land around me I would.

Chesterland would be nice, houses are nicely spaced wide apart from each other.

I lived near a naval air station, and they'd have F16s and FA22s out doing touch and go's to practice for carrier services all week long. They were doing 'turn and burns' the first time my soon to be wife stayed over, and she thought the building was collapsing. You get used to it.

They say they didn't post it but it looks official and has the managers name and number on it.. who knows.

That said, black people can be loud just in normal conversation... funny I heard a comedian making fun of how loud black people are at the movies just the other day. But you can't single them out in a flier like that.

If I was a betting man, a couple tenants (probably white) have a couple loud neighbors (probably black) and they have probably complained about it and nothing has been done to correct it so they did this...

Probably. It's too bad a good housing company can get it's name dragged through the mud by some jerk.

Noisy neighbors are the worst. I lived in various brownstones or high-rises for the past 15 years and luckily it hasn't been too bad. Our current building has very thick concrete walls and floors so it's hard to hear anything, though the downstairs lady's dog will bark a bit in her bathroom when she's gone and the sound travels through the bathroom fan vent.

In our old building we had this trust fund loser who lived above us. Daddy was paying for the condo and he was a musician. He'd play his piano or host jam sessions starting at 3am on weekdays. I tried being nice at first and then more forceful, but he didn't care. The lady next to me moved because of him. I eventually complained to the manager enough that he was one more incident away from a $5,000 fine. That's when daddy had enough I guess. He paid for an offsite studio.

Sorry to derail the thread briefly, but it was a naval air station flying AF birds? Was it in Ft. Worth by chance, across from Lockheed?

I had neighbors in the house next door, about 12 feet or so away, who talked so loud you could hear the entire conversation. It went on for about a week. Then I set my stereo on about 10 and played this song.
Grim Reaper

I got a little quieter after that.

It appears I am in error, but I'm not a pilot. Back then, they were flying the F-15 Tomcats, A-6s, and FA-18s. Now they also use the F-35s. The Tomcats were the really loud ones.

I was near NOB Norfolk, NAS Norfolk, and really close to NAS Oceana, all in VA.

That can be said about every race in the whole wide world. It depends on the individuals not an entire race. Which makes your comment a racist comment. But I'm sure it will be argued differently around here.

I'm not saying all black people are loud but in my experience a group of black people are just naturally loud. It doesn't really bother me though since I grew up with it. It's probably why a lot of people say I am so loud when I talk. I just grew up with a lot of black friends who were very loud and you speak up or get ignored as they would just talk over you.

Still that poster was racist and I seriously doubt put out by management because of liability concerns. Or else, that is one stupid manager who should be fired.

New Jersey girls take the award for loud white girls in my opinion.

Noticing that people of different races have different traits and tendencies is not racism..... and yes, people from other races can also be loud that doesn't mean the generalization doesn't have a foundation in truth.

I'm been in a bunch of different groups.

Being in groups of black people are hands down the loudest, with only drunk white girl winning the championship.

I've been in a group full of Asians, sometimes I struggle to hear what here saying.

I've been in groups with nothing but white dudes, it's a wash.

But being around my black friends, it sounds like we're yelling at each other like we're inside a night club.

There's nothing wrong with it. Some groups are just different.

I think the bigger issue is people who complain about it, like the person who made the flyer.

This particular conversation is gonna be an experience kind of topic. You might have a different experience, but it doesn't make you right or any of us wrong.

Which was my point to begin with, it's not about right or wrong, it's just a thing...

If you've ever walked by a southern baptist church as it's letting out, you can hear entire women's conversations from 100 feet away.... Oh Dear Lord and Sweet Jesus, it's the truth.

It is kind of funny how when you racially profile a group in a positive way, nobody bats an eye.... but when you use the same logic and reach a conclusion that can be viewed as negative, people scream racism and get all bent out of shape.

If I say Italians tend to be great cooks... or Asians tend to do well academically... or blacks tend to be more athletic... or Jews tend to be astute at business.. nobody cares.... These things are generally accepted as true because people can see it with their own eyes, plus, they are positives... Flip them around and find some negatives and all hell breaks loose...

Since this thread has gone in a different direction, here is another story that is race related that I found interesting....

Bay Area teacher asks Steph Curry to stay away from his school
By Danielle Elliot
Prep Rally

Steph Curry is one of the most inspirational players in the National Basketball Association. The newly crowned Western Conference champion is a humble leader, a family man, a team player whose work ethic is second-to-none.

It was that work ethic that allowed him to rise from the ranks of the little-known high school player to NBA MVP. And it's that work ethic, and his personification as an every-day guy, that's leading one Bay Area high school teacher to ask Curry to please stay away.

Matt Amaral is a lifelong Warriors fan. He loves the team, and he loves Curry. But given the opportunity to have Curry visit Mt. Eden High School in Hayward, Calif., he says he'd rather not.

"I have to ask you to do me a solid and make sure you don’t ever come visit my high school," Amaral writes in a blog post directed to Curry.

"When you get involved in soup kitchens, wrap Christmas presents for needy kids, and build homes for the homeless I am inspired. But where those kinds of civic-minded activities have clear benefits, I have to tell you something you probably haven’t heard: Coming to poor high schools like mine isn’t going to help any of these kids out, in fact, it might make things worse."

There is no indication that the NBA is actually trying to send Curry or his teammates to the school. Regardless, Amaral hopes the league never will. He goes on to explain his reasoning.

"If you come to my school you will be your usual inspiring, humble, hilarious, kind self and you will say all the right things. ... I mean, you are such an awesome guy, you are a family man with a wife and daughter, with another on the way. ... You are humble, a leader, and clearly our young men need to meet a man like you. Maybe I’m wrong to write this letter.
But the reason I don’t want you to come has to do with what you won’t say...Because the worst thing you won’t tell them Steph, is that they can’t do it. You won’t tell them that will you? You won’t be able to bring yourself to tell them it is already too late. ... You see, the kids I am talking about do not play year-round, they are not in a travelling league, and they have never even heard of a McDonald’s All-American; they just eat McDonald’s two meals a day and have Hot Cheetos in between."

In his school, most of the students don't have back-up plans, he writes. If they meet Curry and believe they, too, can become NBA stars, they'll likely ditch any other options. He wants them to be realistic.

They are already very good at dreaming about being rich and famous, what we need them to do is get a little more realistic about what is in their control. We need less of an emphasis on sports and celebrity in high school, because it is hurting these kids too much as it is.

He's right to say that most kids, if they are not playing a sport by the time they're in high school, have a very small chance of going pro in that sport. While it might sound like he's counting his kids out, he's really just a concerned teacher trying to encourage them to consider all of their options - especially those beyond going pro.

"Steph," he writes, "you and I know they have a better chance of winning the lottery, but no one seems to tell them these things but me."

I will say that I live on a pretty well mixed street, and in my little section there is a Black family, a Hispanic family, and several White families. There are a couple of older people, (my age) crazy and some younger households.

The loudest family on my street by far, is the Black family. They talk at a low roar, and yell frequently. They play music loudly, and I sometimes hear what sounds like cheerleader practice going on.

I am sure that the fact this is the only household on my section of the street with teenage kids has nothing to do with it. rofl

I will never forget going to the grocery store several years ago, and hearing this Black woman talking on her phone. She was discussing the details of her date the night before ..... and she was rather graphic. This was in a grocery store, and there were little kids around, so it was really inappropriate, especially with the level of ..... detail ...... she went into. crazy

A manager went up to her to ask her to please keep her conversation private, and she said something like "Don't tell me what to do, No one can hear what I'm saying anyway" ...... like she was in a sound-proof bubble or something. crazy I really think that she either did not realize the level of detail she was using on her end of the conversation, or though that her friend was the only one using such graphic language and descriptions of her activities. crazy

I see a lot of people these days holding conversations on their phones like they were talking to a person in private, and who seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that others can hear their end of the conversation, but she was absolutely the worst example I have ever heard.

It was funny, today there was a group of black kids/young adults walking down the street and from almost 3 blocks away you could hear them coming. The foul language they were using make my 8 year old daughter go back inside because on her own because she didn't want to listen to bad words.

Now I try to teach my kids not to be racist but its hard to teach them not to be when my daughter who has very good manners hears stuff like that whenever we see a group of black kids.

Just to clarify we live in a mixed neighborhood with latinos, blacks, whites, and an asian or two. We only see that behavior from the blacks when they are in a group. I get along fine with them when it's only one or two of them but man get three or more of them together and manners go out the window. In my area anyways it's like that.

I have noticed a common thread in most of these incidents.
Seems to me it is all about me, me, me in a narcissistic society where any thought for those around you is no longer a concern.

Also, respect for any authority has been replaced with challenging all authority.

I dunno about all that.

I hear way worse language from a group of white frat boys theanI've heard from a group of black kids.

From my own experience, that type of behavior is not race dependant, nor restricted to only males. Fortunately, it is by far the vast minority of groups that behave this way...

he probably tells his kids to only lock the doors when a black person walks by, too.

500 dollars says if his daughter brings home a black bf he's gonna flip.

I totally understand this. The people and kids I work with often explain to me how it is. "That's just the way we are!!" and they laugh at themselves.

REAL LOUD FREAKING LAUGHING!!!!

They also talk about walking in the middle of the street, black girls talking in the movies and other they stereotypes they admit are to some extent true.

I've also found out that white people smell like wet puppies.

Don't want to hijack, but can someone, anyone, list white people stereotypes?

Personally I don't believe white people have any stereotype behavior, unless what I just said is a stereotype behavior.
