Lou Holtz is probably thankful he's gone, Holtz always had to put him in his place ...
John 3:16 Jesus said "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
Holtz is gone as well as Rece Davis. The new cast is Adnan Virk, Joey Galloway, and Danny Kanell. I don't think I'll have any interest in watching that show, even with Galloway.
he got a different show. Don't remember what... Davis is going to Gameday, May is on some other show. Like Galloway's takes... loved his grins next to May during OSU's run. Wonder if the job was a bet!
Mark May hated Ohio State so much, that he let it get in the way of his analysis.
I don't ever remember him picking Ohio State when they did picks for games. Ohio State shows up quite a bit when they do those kinds of weekly predictions, so it was to the point where he was putting zero thought into it.
You can say the same for Lou Holtz. He refuses to pick against Notre Dame. He backs Ohio State a ton too.
College football is huge for me. I'm a big time consumer of it, even aside from Ohio State. I want guys who are willing to at least try to be subjective. Danny Kanell trolls the SEC, which is great, but I enjoy SEC football and want good coverage.
Kirk Herbstreit is probably the most qualified, but he's part of the A team for games, so you won't get him on shows. I think Desmond Howard is actually pretty good (can't believe I said that), as well as David Pollack.
I'd actually like to see a bunch of new faces. College football is probably ESPN's biggest cash cow, because they only get one NFL game per week. Maybe the NBA? I'm not sure of the numbers, but you would think they would do a better job with programming than 2 guys bickering about schools they love and hate.
I hate to see anyone lose their job, but he had it coming.
You make a lot of good posts in this forum. Ever think about posting in the Pure Football forum more?
I agree w/most of what you said, but I can't stand David Pollack. He argues strong, but he contradicts himself all the time.
Herbstreit is amazingly good and I like Howard, too.
I am probably one of the few guys who actually really liked Brent Musberger. He knew how to call a "big game." I think him and Herbie had it out, though and Herbie was the star, so Brent got exiled to the SEC network.

ha, I post every once in a while in the Browns forum, but there's just nothing to talk about with this team, which I guess part of that is probably a good thing. I think once the Finals are over, I will probably divert a lot more of my sports attention to the Browns. For now, other than Johnny, I'm glad we're hearing very little out of Berea. Tells me Pettine is righting that ship.
Yeah dude, Brent is one of my favorite PBP guys. I just always got that feeling that when his voice is calling a game, it's a big deal. Even aside from NC games, the big time conference clashes, and the late season in-conference meetings. Chris Fowler does a good job, but he's not in Brent's class. He and Vern are the top dogs in all of sports if you ask me. Those guys could call old people doing bingo and make it sound exciting. Nessler is great too (got to meet him before an OSU game a few years ago, super nice guy, who ended up asking me more questions than I did to him, haha)
It's just night and day how the coverage of the NFL and college football. It really seems like the guys that do the NFL are a lot more professional (so to say) about it. I think the former players probably have less a problem being honest about their former eams than they do their alma mater. I get that. It just makes for a lesser product when guys can't do their job.
It's hard to get coaching personalities on there, because the good ones can coach forever. It's not like the NFL where Cowher took the job still pretty young because the NFL can literally burn a guy out before he hits 50. If there was an equivalent of Bill Cowher in college football, the networks could never get him, because he'd still be coaching.
There is one guy I like who does football and basketball and gets zero respect. Gus Johnson. That guy has a ton of enthusiasm and he knows the game.
Wonder why they hold him down?
Gus is an acquired taste. I think he does a great job. I have no idea why CBS cut him loose Maybe someone else here can fill us in? Fox grabbed him up in a minute though. I love that he does the B1G championship.
Gus Johnson and Charles Davis are my favorite announcing team in all of football. They do a fair amount of Big XII and IIRC Pac 12 games. There is no color commentator in the game better prepared for a broadcast than Davis. He always has every backstory, has watched previous games from the teams competing, and can highlight good players (and what makes them good) and not just ones with good stats.
Yeah, I really think Brad Nessler is very good. He and Tood Blackledge make a good team.

Well, keep posting. I really enjoy reading your basketball takes. It's obvious you know something about the game.
Nessler and Blackledge are the best on ESPN bar none. Todd knows his stuff very well. I've always been a huge fan of Nessler. Nessler and Jimmy Dykes were phenomenal for college basketball.
Gus Johnson makes everything exciting... one of my more favorite commentators.
I've heard him do MMA and I've heard him do Soccer and it doesn't matter, it still sounds good.
There are certain PBP guys that just own anything they call. Tom Hamilton, Mike Emrick, & Gary Thorne were/are my favorites. Heck I even like Ed Farmer, the White Sox radio announcer.
If Mike Emrick were to do the PBP of my wife eating breakfast, I'd watch in total fascination.

I think that Gus Johnson could make 3 years olds playing checkers sound exciting.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
That's my problem with Gus Johnson, he's too over the top. He acts like a 3 yard screen pass is the most amazing play he's ever seen. It wears thin and is not genuine. I prefer to listen to an announcer who doesn't try to steal the spolight.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I can't stand Farmer. Baseball is pretty much boring to begin with, but he makes Joe Buck seem like the Tampa Bay lighting PBP guy (youtube Dave Mishkin).
I know a lot of fans, even Sox fans, can't stand Hawk, but I actually don't mind him that much. First of all, he's a gigantic homer, and there's no denying that, but he's a wealth of awesome baseball stories. He knows the game in and out. If I could make a list of sports related people (still alive) that I would love to have a beer with, Hawk is on that list.
Doc does a great job for NBC, I know a lot of the hockey fans don't like him, but he's pure hockey for me. Genuinely enjoys the sport and the league. He and Olczk do a great job (not a fan of Pierre)
As someone said before about college vs pro football announcers, I find it mind boggling that the NFL, and the monster they are, have some of the worst crews calling their games. Not only the dolts who do our games and the other 1pm starts, but Tirico on Monday Night Football? Really?
College football has the best announers in sports. Verne and Danielson? Best crew there is. For us Browns fans, you can tell Bernie soaked up a ton of knowledge from Danielson when he was a youngblood. They both call out things before the ball is snapped. I love that crew. I try to not miss the SEC game of the week.
I hate Jim Nance. Because he continuously tries to "guess" what's going to happen..
I recall a game when Mike Shannahan was arguing something and Nance just started yelling "And Shanahan WILL CHALLENGE!!"
And Mike just stood there.. not even considering it..
Also I cant remember the college football guys name, older guy, but you could tell his mind was starting to go.. there would be a pile and hed just randomly yell "FUMBLE" with a specific drawl.. it was sad...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?
