Just wondering, What are some little known bands you guys know and/or have seen that are amazing, that no one else knows.
for me theres a few with recency.
Man Man (6 piece band that just plays anything and everything, saw them a couple weeks ago opening for Modest Mouse and they were the most fun ive had seeing a band i didnt know)
The Format: Theyre getting bigger now, but still relatively unknown.
Arctic Monkeys: a UK band that are pretty big over there, but no one seems to know anything about them here. I wanna see em pretty badly, but they dont come around too much.
The Avett Brothers: a 3 piece with a banjoist, acoustic guitarist, and stand up bass player. They're from North Carolina, and seem to have some real bluegrass roots. I'm a big fan, but only my buddy who introduced me to them, and my buddy who i introduced them to have ever seem to have heard of them...
Anybody heard of them? Or, whats some little known bands that should be known?
"It has to start somewhere It has to start somehow What better place than here? What better time than now?"
Does anybody know who sings a song with lyrics kind of like these
we're not so different
I was stupid when I was younger
That's all I know of the song and I have only heard it a few times but never catch the name or who sings it. not even sure if those are the exact words.
Gojira - a French metal band that growls about the environment...lol. Clutch - I know I've seen a sig in here from some member, so I'm not the only Gearhead here. But lately, a lot of their music seems to have blues overtones. Not a bad thing. Their lyrics are smart and clean.
Widespread Panic... been going strong since 1985 without the help of radio play.
moe. ... another great band that doesn't rely on radio play, yet tours nationally.
Drive By Truckers... good southern rock/blues.
North Mississippi Allstars... REALLY, REALLY good southern rock/blues.
Garage Majal... funk/acid jazz/rock/you name it.
Greyboy Allstars... the best acid jazz musicians of our generation come together in one supergroup.
Outformation... probably the least known of all those listed previously. A very talented upstart group . Fronted by the former guitar tech of Michael Houser. The now deceased lead guitartist for Widespread Panic.
Quote: Drive By Truckers... good southern rock/blues.
I really like them. They remind me a bit of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I still listen to a lot of old punk, I've posted some of these bands before in another thread about punk music (most are from the late 80's early 90's): Descendents Dag Nasty Minor Threat fIREHOSE Minutemen
A newer band I've been listening to is Peeping Tom, led by former Faith No More frontman Mike Patton.
Someone mentione Arctic Monkeys as well - they are getting a TON of play on XM's Ethel alternative channel.
Quote: The lead singer is also a Browns fan...............hard to believe...but true!
Panic's lead singer, John Bell, is from Cleveland. (They cover the Michael Stanely(also from CLand) tune, Let's Get the Show On the Road.) J.B. often wears his Indian's jerseys on stage. He's a big Buckeye fan also.
Quote: Haha...I love Corona by Minutemen, the theme from Jackass...
The other band I mentioned, fIREHOSE, was formed from former memebers of Minutemen. Nice, not many people know that the riff from the beginning of jackass is that song.
Lucero -- They are an Alt-country band out of Memphis Tennessee. Saw them at a CMJ and bought a CD right afterward. Their best album in my opinion is "Nobody's Darlings" Best song is "Bikeriders" or "The War" (but I'm a fan of pretty much everything they do.).
My Morning Jacket -- A southern rock/indie band from Louisville Kentucky. Saw them the first time at a "Feeling Better Than Everfine" festival. Saw them last time opening for Pearl Jam. They are awesome live, and their studio albums "Z" and "It Still Moves" are awesome.
RJD2 -- A producer/DJ out of Columbus. Signed to the Definitive Jux label and released two great albums "Deadringer" and "Since We Last Spoke" both of these album saw singles picked up and used by Nike, the NBA, and several video games.
Townes Van Zandt -- A singer/songwriter from Texas. Recorded tons of stuff over his long career. A tune that you may recognize by Van Zandt is "Dead Flowers" off The Big Lebowski soundtrack.
Arctic Monkeys: a UK band that are pretty big over there, but no one seems to know anything about them here. I wanna see em pretty badly, but they dont come around too much.
LOVE the Arctic Monkeys. Their new CD has some majorly rockin songs. I think they're playing here, but both shows are sold out
It does, I'm a huge huge fan of the Monkeys. Theyre so fun, but the closest they come to me in like NYC, and im in Buffalo. It stinks.
I really like My Morning Jacket and Ned's Atomic Dustbin that have been mentioned.
For you who mentioned My Morning Jacket, you heard their Live album that came out recently? and aaaaaalso, theres another band very similar to them you should look up. Nada Surf. Theyre very similar and really good too

My friend Sam plays drums for RJD2 now. He'll be coming our way on the 17th. He's played drums for other bands from the Columbus area such as Gaunt, The New Bomb Turks, Train Meets Truck. Most recently with The Sun Band.
Another Columbus area band is Big Back 40. They released one REALLY solid alt country album on Polydor records called Bested. There is no way any alt country fan could listen to this album and not like it. Sean Beal is a talented song writer with a great voice for the genre.
There's an Amazing acoustic guitarist out of Columbus named Jim Volk. The guy can flat out play... the guitar doesn't stand a chance. Listen to the clips on his website... then go see him the next time he's around. It's unlike anything you've ever seen.
Keep in mind these tracks are all single guitars... one, not two... one. Plus he often sings... while playing like this... Unreal.
Maybe not as obscure as some other bands mentioned in this thread, but definitely overlooked in my opinion...Corrosion Of Conformity.
For those not familiar with them, they started out as a hardcore punk/crossover band in the mid-80's and now are a metal/southern rock/bluesy hybrid. If you took Metallica, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath and put them in a blender, the result would be Corrosion Of Conformity.
Well some might have heard of them... but Chevelle... I went to see them in Cleveland last month at Agora. Not a very big crowd so that tells me Cleveland hasn't heard them too much... cause they rock! Also a local band there called dazend played that night with finger 11... Dazend was very good and I could see them making it. The lead singer has a very good voice.

If Jam bands are your thing, then check out Galactic, or Umphreys McGee, or Martin, Medeski, Wood; How about Ekoostik Hookah. What about Sound Tribe Sector 9.
The Big Wu---only band I ever saw play a tribute to Willie Green---yes, that Willie Green.

Done it. I enjoy alot of it.....only have time to see very little these days.
While a tribute to Ernie Green is nice.....please dont bring the Big Wu into the conversation.
I used to see Hookah for 3 bucks with this cat known as Portlanddawg down der in Cowtown when partying hard on wednesday night......... was all we knew.
64 Patterson.
The Crew.
Epic.
I actually thought for a second that the Big WU scored with a tribute to Ernie Green.....then I read again. Willie Green??
Tighten it up bro.
Tyler I enjoy your posts. You liven it up but please dont pigeon hole my favorite band by calling them a jam band.
maybe portland will add to this with his description of the spread.
North Mississippi Allstars... REALLY, REALLY good southern rock/blues.
Nice one PortlandDawg, there's probably only a few of us on here that know of them. I suspect the Decemberists and Pink Martini are probably a little more popular - following the same theme.
Another band I like is the Stars of Track and Field.
