Quote: I used to see Hookah for 3 bucks with this cat known as Portlanddawg down der in Cowtown when partying hard on wednesday night......... was all we knew.
64 Patterson.
Tyler I enjoy your posts. You liven it up but please dont pigeon hole my favorite band by calling them a jam band.
maybe portland will add to this with his description of the spread.
which I always felt was very eloquent.
64 Patterson... those were the days. Late night Sweeny playing the "ekoosik" guitar in the living room. Various locally grown treats for those in the know. We owned that town for a few years for sure.
As for Panic being a jam band... they scare hippies away. Panic only fits into the jam band genre because they tour so excesively, they allow recording and trading of their live shows, and don't rely on radio play. Outside of that they don't misically fit. They are far more aggressive, heavy and dark than most of the jam band scene. It's more southern swamp rock. Listen to Henry Parson's Died, Fishwater, Proving Ground, or Impossible, and tell me how that compares to... say ... ANYTHING the Dead did, or Phish, or the String Cheese Incident the three top "true" jam bands. Panic fits more closely with Government Mule. And Mule is definately NOT a jam band.
Mule is really good. I have a live DVD of them and its amazing.
Someone mentioned Umphrey's McGee too and theyre very good, I enjoy their stuff, Someone sent me a podcast of theirs, its an hour and a half long, and not divided into tracks, but i can listen to it anyway, its really good.
A couple of you mentioned Decemberists and Chevelle. I've seen em both, and the Decemberists a lil over a month ago. And Chevelle, how you like the new album? They got a new bassist, its no longer 3 brothers, just 2 brothers and a brother in law. It wasnt an angry split, they just wanted to go different ways.
You guys go to mentioning acoustic people. Here's one thats amazing, especially if you like politically charged music. The Nightwatchman. Its Tom Morello playing Acoustic music on his own. Absolutely amazing. He's so good. I encourage anyone and everyone to look him up
"It has to start somewhere It has to start somehow What better place than here? What better time than now?"
Ooooh, i just thought of another. theyre not so much little known as forgotten.
But I saw Blues Traveler around Christmas this past year, and it was one of the best shows I've seen. They played for 3 hours, ended at 12:45am playing Devil Went Down To Georgia. And they were a man down that night because he was having a baby (well, not him his wife, ha) It was such a terrific show, I cant even put it in words, if anyone gets a chance, I suggest seeing them, theyre so good
I first started listening to them in the early 90's while in college. Travelers and Theives was the first CD I owned of theirs, but have the entire collection now. Their first recording, Blues Traveler, is one of my favorites to this day; every song on the disc is good.
They did drop off the face of the earth, but are a fantastic live band to see.
My brother in law plays in a Columbus area band called the Brown Notes. They'll be at Little Brothers in a couple of weeks. Kind of midwest garage/indie rock. Truthfully not my style of music but I love him like a brother anyway. http://cowtownbrown.com/
Quote: I'm a big fan of Atmosphere, it's a semi-underground Rap duo. Easily the best lyrics of any rap I've heard.
As for underground rap I like Atmosphere, but currently, my favorite rap artist---with incredibly dense lyricism is Aesop Rock. Also, recently I've been digging a guy called Despot.
El-P's new album "I'll Sleep When Your Dead" is absolutely awesome. Right now the only Underground I really dig comes from Definitive Jux.
Can you recommend good Aesop Rock songs to me? I've listened to some, but find most of it to be too dense, to the point that there is almost no meaning. I do really like No Regrets though, and would like any other songs that are more straightforward, any other songs more like that?
Haven't listened to the other two artists you mentioned though, I'll see if I can Ruckus them.
I never cared much for the Turks but I still support anything my friends are involved in. Their old drummer Sam moved onto a band called The Sun. I dug them more than anything he'd played in, in quite a while. You might like them... well if they were still around. Warner Brothers didn't support them as much as they could have. Sam has since moved on to RJD2. Don't know much about them really but I'll be seeing them on the 17th here in Portland. Sam's one of just a very few friends from home that has come west to see me. Though I usually only get about a 24 hour window to see him before he's on to the next city.
The Sun ( Sam's the drummer/ singer of the chorus/ writer)
Well, the tracks that come to mind by Aes are "Daylight" which is probably his best known. "Fast Cars" and "Holy Smokes" are singles off his newer album. Cool thing about that album is it contained an 80 page booklet of all his lyrics---don't know if the booklet version is still available---but it definitely served as an incentive to buy. There are also some songs off the Bazookatooth album the three that come to mind are "Babies with Guns," "Easy," and "We're Famous." His "Labor EP" is considered by critics as his best work.
Despot only has two singles out---both contain some great lyrics---they are: "Homesickness" and "Get Rich or Try Dying"
El-P released "Fantastic Damage" in 2002 and it is a classic, his new album, which I referenced earlier, released this past April, is just as good.
Well, I really like Concrete Blonde and I like one particular song by Medicine. The song by Medicine I really like is 'Time Baby III' it was in The Crow.
A local band around here that is great is Reckless Kelly. I think they are a cross between the pop of the beattles and the off the cuff attititude of the Stones. Very cool alt-country. Check em out.
Galactic Medeski, Martin, and Wood Widespread Panic moe. Drive-by-truckers Greyboy Allstars Black Keys
other fantastic stuff outta New Orleans (besides Galactic and MMW)...
Dr. John...yeah, he had some hits back in the day, but he's still going, and as good as ever live... Dirty Dozen Brass Band...they're best in NoLa b/c they've got the whole band, whereas they only tour with a core group The Iguanas...a little rock, a little jazz, a little polka...not the most muscially profound, but some fun music, nonetheless... Garage a Trois...collaboration of 3 phenomenal talents...Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, and Skerik... Beausoleil...just pure backyard-bayou sound...you can almost taste the crawfish...
leaving my NewOrleans love behind...
Keb Mo...ok, so winning Grammy after Grammy doesn't make you very unknown, but still a very underappreciated bluesman, IMO...
Morphine...they sound just like their name might suggest...and for me, the premature death of the lead singer Mark Sandman ranks up there with the all-too-short runs of Sublime and Nirvana...
Vinx...haven't heard any of his recent work, but he can put together some amazing tunes with just his voice and a drum...
Roger Hoover & The Whiskey Hounds...gotta give my buddy a plug...he plays for a NEOhio group that those of you in the area may wanna watch out for...a more mellow, northern version of the Drive-by-Truckers, to use a group from this thread...
The New Mastersounds...another terrific jazz outfit...they're out of the UK, i believe...
Quote: My Morning Jacket -- A southern rock/indie band from Louisville Kentucky. Saw them the first time at a "Feeling Better Than Everfine" festival. Saw them last time opening for Pearl Jam. They are awesome live, and their studio albums "Z" and "It Still Moves" are awesome.
hardly a band no one has heard of, but i'll tell ya right now that Z is killer.
Quote: RJD2 -- A producer/DJ out of Columbus. Signed to the Definitive Jux label and released two great albums "Deadringer" and "Since We Last Spoke" both of these album saw singles picked up and used by Nike, the NBA, and several video games.
LOVE RJ!! he's a nice guy - if you like him, you might wanna check out other Weightless recordings artist, such as Blueprint (another Columbus native), and their project together, Sould Position - they're in Columbus all the time - as well as Envelope. he's pretty fly for a white guy, and actually really friendly. you'll see him in the Short North all the time, usually at Used Kids.
and who the heck hasn't heard of Townes Van Zandt?!?
Patrick, the drummer, is a really nice guy. i've had a drink with him before. these guys are from Akron, and like the White Stripes, but a whole lot better. think a two-piece version on the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
from a lot of the bands most of you are throwing out, here are som recommendations -
A Band Of Bees Dr. Dog Broken West Bonnie "Prince" Billy Iron & Wine Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Hot Chip The Redwalls Madlib his alter-ego, Quasimoto (best rap ever) Marvin Pontiac and Vetiver
just to name a few that share similar qualities with mentioned bands.
Just clicking. These guys have been around for quite a long time. Anyone here listen to C.O.C.? ( Corrosion of Conformity ) Started out like a skate punk / black sabbath sounding band. Now they sound alot like old Black Sabbath. I am not sure if they are considered well known or not. I suppose they are in different cliques. Anywhos, I dig them. And one question. How do I post video in my reply post? Do I have to get permission to use HTML? I cannot seem to find an option to enable HTML. Oh well, here is a youtube link. COC / youtube user video
Einstein could not even fathom the mathematical improbabilities of the Browns woes.
Go to his fab chan link about half way down....listen to the first and second song...."Good-by to the Blues" is incredible. not that "dust my broom" isn't.
Great stuff.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I have it on now.............I just talked to a friend that has seen Walter Trout and the Radicals play in Vinoy Park a few years back.........he said the same thing..........very solid band with great sound and lots of talent.
He is a pretty big dude............maybe we should have him come over and play right gaurd this season for the Browns!
Thanks man.............always up for some good blues rock!
