I know most of you won't believe this but I was thinking about this very thing the other day. And then wham there it is.
What a great training aid for QB's.
Virtual reality has become an actual reality for one NFL team that will use a 3D simulation to enhance the relentless pursuit of gloryhole.
Via Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports, the Cowboys have signed a two-year deal with STRIVR, the startup company featured last month in U-T San Diego.
“It’s an awesome feeling to have one of the biggest brands in the sports world to become one of the first teams that jumps in,” Derek Belch, the STRIVR CEO who once played kicker at Stanford. “I give Jason Garrett a lot of credit for being a visionary. He told me when we first met that he’s been dreaming of something like this for 20 years. And then once he saw it, he said it exceeded his expectations.”
Belch hopes that as many as six NFL teams will partner with STRIVR before training camp. All 32 of them should; virtual reality training allows quarterbacks to get reps and coaching without exposing themselves to injury or violating the limitations on practice time. And its use has expanded beyond the guys who throw the football.
“Before it was great with quarterbacks because of the live work and how applicable it is [pre and post-snap] and for running backs to, but now it’s also for safeties and linebackers and O-linemen and cornerbacks,” Belch told Feldman.
The technology apparently doesn’t completely insulate against injury. As Belch told Feldman, one college lineman “got so into it” while using the virtual reality device that he “did six pass sets in a row and ended up running into the wall.”
It sounds like Belch and his partners will soon be running into the bank. Repeatedly.
bttb...I have no doubt that virtual reality reps will benefit QBs as a training aid especially for mental side of the game. I hope the Browns look into it to keep pace with the rest of the league.
I always thought the general NFL culture on developing QBs was silly in ways. One of these ways is how reps are very limited and divided, with the starter usually getting the bulk of the reps during the week with the backup getting most of the rest and the 3rd stringer almost none. Surely this is for practical reasons, to not run the receivers into the ground, etc.
But how are the non-starting QBs supposed to get better? Say you take a young QB in the draft but he's not the starter because he's not good enough or experienced enough yet-- he's already not playing in the games and he's also not getting many live practice reps? That doesn't make sense.
One solution I used to have for this was to simply hire more receivers if you need them. I know there are roster limits-- I mean hire in the more conventional sense receivers who are really talented but not quite good enough to actually be on an NFL roster and have them on the coaching staff or whatever. Teach them some of the plays and have them run routes for the backups.
If virtual reality is already good enough to make this unnecessary, that's pretty cool.
Hasug...I think I read something about our OC or the QB coach requiring our backup QBs to run the same play as McCown is running in practice...I assume the goal is to get the foot work and defensive read practiced.
I don't know if they are able to throw the ball to a receiver though...Your idea about adding WRs makes sense .
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants the old glory hole, ladies and gentlemen. Of course, he probably didn't mean what we think he meant, but it's funny nonetheless. He is completely unaware.
It certainly appears that it could help with the mental side of things.

As well as knowing what all it is capable of. If you could make it simulate opposing defenses for game preparation that would be very cool.
I think thats the whole idea, if I were Haslam I would build a state of the art technology training center built around this technology work with some geeks and develop and lead in this format. I don't think you want to follow here leading would give you a huge leg up.
Tomorrow isn't soon enough if you asked me.

PB, I can understand some folks will be resistant to technology. I work in the manufacturing industry and more and more of what we do is based on virtual reality and it is on the verge of changing nearly every aspect of that industry and in ushering in a all new way of manufacturing in fact it will eventually eliminate those that have refused to embrace it.
One of the keys is being a leader and a pioneer gives you a huge competitive advantage. It will come to pass that QB's while wearing a helmet with 3d vision systems attached will be able to practice against any team and any defense without a risk of injury. That's huge brother. It won't be your second string d reading off cue cards it will be the real deal in virtual space, its ground breaking and I would be a leader here this is the future I can guarantee you.
It's not a video game but the video game will train the QB just like they train pilots.

Players with two US National Football League teams will be wearing movement sensor technology by Australian medical device company dorsaVi in their upcoming season. NFL teams New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns have been using the movement sensors during training in their off-season and have now decided to use the technology during the 2015/16 season. dorsaVi's ViPerform technology comprises a wireless, wearable movement sensor system that can measure and record movement and muscle activity. It can be used by sports clubs to monitor and assess players and help guide the recovery of injured athletes. dorsaVi says the use of the technology will provide a major boost to its exposure. The NFL is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise consisting of 32 teams. dorsaVi says the 400 college football teams in the US and 2,700-plus sports medicine physicians often look to elite sporting teams to validate emerging technology before adopting it themselves. dorsaVi has also signed deals with Toronto FC in the Major Soccer League and National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors. "When professional sports teams trust ViPerform data to assess their multi-million-dollar athletes, doctors take notice," dorsaVi said on Thursday. The US is one of the biggest market opportunities for dorsaVi. Its technology also can be used in occupational health and safety to improve work practices and workplace design, and in medical and physiotherapy settings to assess and treat lower back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. Shares in dorsaVi were unchanged at 29 cents at 1031 AEST.
Is there a NFL rule against us using a Cyborg or Robot at QB? It would definitely be an improvement for us...

he Buccaneers had been looking for someone to provide a virtual reality training product to assist with the development of rookie quarterback Jameis Winston. They’ve found one.
The team has announced a deal with EON Sports VR to use the SIDEKIQ software developed by “as a supplement to their on-field work for quarterbacks when the team reports back for training camp beginning on August 1.”
“We are excited to be coming in on the front end of this new wave of technology that is designed to supplement the on-field and classroom work that our quarterbacks are already doing,” said Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht. “Obviously, there is no real substitute for being on the field when it comes to getting our players ready for game action. However, this virtual reality technology allows us to enhance the learning experience for our quarterbacks without requiring them to put in additional time on the practice fields.”
“Virtual reality has become very popular in high school and college programs and there has recently been much more interest in the technology from professional sports teams looking to add to their teaching tools while limiting exposure to injuries that may occur in live-action situations,” said EON Sports VR CEO Brendan Reilly, who was a guest recently on PFT Live. “We are excited to get to work with the Buccaneers and provide their quarterbacks with the opportunity to train more efficiently than ever before.”
Last month, the Cowboys became the first NFL team to adopt virtual reality training, with a competing product from STRIVR labs.
And so it’s just a matter of time before one of these companies forks over a huge pile of money to become the official (and exclusive) virtual reality sponsor of the NFL, presumably when the technology is developed into a game that can be played at home — and re-booted every year to get people to buy millions and millions more copies of it.
+1....However, with any technology it can really piss people off if it is used a another evaluation tool, vs a teaching tool...USAF simulators, instead of teaching became a great way to evaluate....see if you can throw something way oddball at crew and what them screw up...teaching or evaluating....big difference....GO Browns!!!

I bet that, within a few years, they will have a virtual reality machine that allows the QB to actually make throws, and the system evaluates each step of his throwing motion and footwork based off of the "perfect" mark. (accepting that there is never a truly perfect) I bet that each time he steps a half step too far he is corrected, and each time his throwing motion and mechanics are off the mark, the system tells him so.
The technology is interesting.
