Any camera hobbyists in here? I recently invested in a beautiful Nikon D3300 a couple of months ago. I'm loving every part of this camera. Here's a few of my shots these last few months. -I may or may not have waited two hours to watch this parade. It was totally worth it. -Here's some fun with depth of field. This is from where I live. -I went up here yesterday before game 3 came on. -This is from an added filter on the camera. I use it sparingly, but I liked how it worked here.

Rocket, nice shots. Visit a site called stuckincustoms.com. This guy does some incredible work with HDR. I have a Canon 7D and an Olympus E-510.

I just use disposable 35 mm cameras (from Walmart). They're good for ~ 30 pictures.
I keep one in my backpack which I rarely leave my apartment without. Throughout the year I usually take 2 or 3 photos a month of my travels.
At the end of each year I get the camera developed with extra prints which I give/send to the people in them.
It serves as my "year-in-review".
In the future, some photos will undoubtedly end up on this board as some of them are Browns related. (The previously posted S.N.E.B.B. group picture (from the "Come party with us" thread) was not mine. That's from the SNEBB facebook)

I'm looking into getting a decent low f-stop prime lens, and a polarization filter. The sun washes out colors way too often.

We bought an inexpensive, relatively speaking, Nikon in '96 when we went to England. Most regular cameras back then made pretty bad pics. The Nikon was so easy to focus, after a little practice, and the pics were amazing considering we weren't even camera enthusiasts.
My daughter ended up taking a couple of photography classes in high school and had a great time making some very weird pictures of downtown, toys, instruments and just about anything. If got a camera that can really focus up close sometimes it takes a while to figure out what was photographed.
I enjoy using my phone camera, loading them into the computer and editing them. Those pics are a ton better than cameras from back in the day too.

As soon as I saw this thread, I was wondering how long before you'd show up.

Thanks Clem. Some nice shots here Rocket, Florida and Squires. The best advice I can give to new photographers is to: 1.) learn the exposure triangle (the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO) and get out of the preset modes on these new cameras. It's not rocket science and you'll be able to use the best settings for a particular capture and take full advantage of the technology. 2.) learn and use good technique....the slightest amount of camera shake can make the difference between a good pic and an eye popping great pic. Image stabilization only helps so much. Using bursts and hoping one will be good isn't the way to learn. 3.) Set the camera to center point focus and spot metering. Unless you're shooting birds (or jets ) in flight, all of those focus points are confusing and will focus off the subject much of the time. You want the subject in focus and metered correctly, not the background or objects off to the side. When shooting people or wildlife, get the eyes in focus as nothing else matters if you don't. I use an older Canon 50D and a 20yr. old Sigma 50-500 zoom for all of my wildlife shots. It's a slow focusing lense with no image stabilization. The new bells and whistles have their place, but unless you get the basics down they are not worth the cost. A soft HDR pic is a soft pic, and it's not very appealing. You can't make a bad pic good with post processing. Look at what Ansel Adams was able to do with a box and some flash powder.

Great pics guys.... I shoot with a Nikon d7000 currently... Want to upgrade to a full frame at some point.
I mainly take photos for friends and family with my 50mm 1.8... Want to get a 70-200 f2.8 once my boys get a little more active

It's not rocket science and you'll be able to use the best settings for a particular capture and take full advantage of the technology. I read up on it and practice a little here and there. But it is not ingrained in me enough that I can do it on the fly. It is still trial and error in manual mode, and sadly, when on vacation I often have to keep moving, and can't stop for a few minutes to get it right. I have gone down to the bay in the evening and worked on sunsets and wildlife using manual settings and gotten some real nice shots, I just wish I knew it well enough to look at a shot, change my settings and shoot.

In playing around with some HDR photography I started trying to create the "Swamp People" look. I used my neighbor Doug as my guinea pig. This is normal Doug. This is Swamp People Doug.

I bought a new toy for the camera last night. A 50mm 1.8/f lens is my newest purchase. Here's an example of what it can do: I can't wait to try it out when the weather gets a bit nicer.

I'd post some photos of mine but don't have an off site host to link to. I have images from Burning Man and a bunch of music festival art I've created, plus lots of travel photos I'd love to share here. Any suggestions?

I use PBase for photo hosting. It's not free but, I really like it there. It makes it so easy to share pictures with my family and friends when traveling. Jfanent told me about it years ago and I'm still using it for my photos. Here is one of my galleries there with some pictures I took recently while in California: http://www.pbase.com/jules2221/california

I store all of mine locally. I'll back them up online in various places, and an external hard drive gets the high quality copies. I upload to www.imgur.com if I want to show individual shots. Here's another from playing around with the lens, and focusing modes.

Lots of really great photography on here. I usually manage to get the shot right after the bird has flown off ...... or the player has slid in and is standing up.

]my photo bucket. This was from Burning Man a few years back. A 50' tall Trojan horse prior to it being incinerated. When they lit that thing on fire it was amazing to watch it burn. Huge! Huge flames. You could feel the heat from a long distance off.

]my photobucket This is the head of an 18' long chameleon/pedal powered mutant vehicle my friends and I built for Burning Man. It's called the Cyclomeleon. The back was covered in full spectrum LED lighting so we could change its color. The legs moved as the wheels turned so it appeared to walk. It's eyes rotated 360 degrees, and it's neck and mouth both moved too. Essentially it was a giant pedal powered puppet.
