I get that it's very popular to be optimistic and it will win you many friends,
You're wrong, it's fun exciting it gives you a reason to watch the games.
Without optimism, hope, what have you got...really?

being a browns fan is like taking your dog to vet every week to be put down...
Let's see, that's 34--78, which is a 30% winning percentage during the last 7 years.
I would say that is reality.
Don't confuse hope in life w/hoping your football team wins. This is not a philosophical debate or a psychological debate.
Any intelligent person knows the importance of hope and optimism in their lives. They also realize that hoping for something to turn out great when they have absolutely no influence on the outcome is not really hope, but wishful thinking and is based on fantasy rather than factual evidence.
We all hope for the Browns to be good. Quit trying to act like you are a superior people because you have "hope" that the Browns are going to be one of the top teams in the NFL this year. I think it is rather classless to insinuate that anyone who wants to see evidence of improvement is somehow an inferior person and conducts their lives in a negative fashion.
I am far from a negative person. In the matters of my life and what I can control, I am very hopeful, optimistic, confident, and secure. I don't appreciate the constant insults and armchair psychology that you guys constantly throw out there to make yourselves feel better and insult anyone who isn't on-board w/your shared delusions of grandeur.
Btw----------how hopeful and optimistic were you when Banner and Lombardi were here?

I was just as optimistic heck I was even optimistic after Mangini and the worst draft in Browns history
...disliked Mangini but still wanted the Browns to win. I guess unlike you I don't care who is in charge, yes there has been to many losing seasons but I'll take those over the seasons we didn't have a team.

- The regime change brought improved results and renewed my optimism that we are getting closer to our goal.
- It is truly unfortunate that my unbridled optimism has made you uncomfortable. There was no intent to be insulting, nor would I have expected that it would be received that way.
- I was also optimistic in regard to LomBanner - that they would soon be gone - and they were...

Whatever our win total is this coming season( 6 or 7 wins seems realistic) we have to keep our FO and coaching staff and keep building on what we have. Continuity going forward is the key. No more knee jerk reactions.

Ding! Ding! Ding!
I agree with this post.
Firing another head coach and GM is only going to make our veterans want to leave even more, and it'll make luring in free agents tougher next Spring.
Even if we finish 2-14 (which I don't think will happen) Jimmy Haslam has to at least consider keeping Pettine and Farmer.
"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"
I have to say that I do see things the same way. We do need some continuity. However, if Farmer pulls another stunt similar to "text gate", it may do the team more harm than good to keep him.
I'm not saying he will. What I guess I'm saying that you just can't stand up for continuity at any cost.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
I can't say I'm a fan of Farmer. He seems in over his head, and the selection of Manziel in the first is troubling. I'm happy with his attention to the trenches, but I'm just not sold on the guy. Pettine is a real gem. I'd hate to see him go. He's the first coach we've had since the return I've had faith in.
I was a Farmer pimp BEFORE he got the GM job, and I am still in his corner. Has he made mistakes... yep just like every other GM in the NFL. Has he been perfect... nope but neither has any other GM in the history of the NFL. He has however done a good job so far and he is still learning and should continue to improve.

As a fanbase, we have to stop this incessant search for perfection and allow people to grow and develop. It's stifling.
Hope you're feeling ok GM.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Yes, he has! Our team is better than it was at this time last year, and the year before, and...

I like Farmer but this is a big year for him and this regime. Its not gonna be pretty if our new NT isnt able to beat out the vets to fill their starting spot. To have 4 first round picks in 2 years and none able to beat out the guy infront of them? lol
while as a Browns fan, I'm sure you would welcome it. Be ready to duck. The sun don't shine on the same dogs butt everyday. I'm going with the way over, I can take the hit.
If you haven't seen improvement lately and choose to dwell on the past than you have been sleeping right along with us.

From a gamblers perspective, it is definitely were the money is sitting. As you can see from early post, most money is sitting on the under!
Unlike guys like you, I am not upset about your prediction. What I would like is for guys like you to quit making everything personal if others don't agree w/you.

I just said it's okay w/me if you believe that we are going to win more than 6.5 games. I didn't mention any of you when I made my prediction. I didn't act like any of you were whacked because you picked the over.
I just want to say what I have to say w/out all the stupid policing that so many of you resort to.

What was the over/under last year, and where was the money last year?
It seems to me that the over/under was 3 or 4 last year ..... and that popular opinion was that we would not reach that.

I'm optimistic this year. I think this was the first offseason that really made sense to me in terms of what they did. Our O line should be top 5 with depth. A few talented RB options to battle each other... best man wins. We should be able to run at will. QB isn't great but he's solid if he's given time. Defenses better stack the box or we'll run all day so WRs will be seeing lots of 1 on 1 coverage. With time our QB is good enough to capitalize on that.
Our D got upgraded too it seems. Line should be great and deep. Fluky high injuries their last year but should be solid now. Secondary has talent to be top 5. LBs look solid too. Overall D should be no worse than top 10.
Yes tough schedule but this team feels like best we've had in 7 years. Just an opinion but can't wait till we see some games!
The Jets will likely have the number one defense in the league this year. The Browns are very similar to the Jets in terms of talent and the lack of a QB, both teams will look to run the ball. McCown doesn't respond well to pressure and with the D backfield the Jets have McCown will do what he has always done.
Tennessee should have beaten us last year.
Oakland should be much improved this season with Carr in his second year he should improve. Mack is a terrorist and will get pressure.
But yeah the Browns could win or lose all three games against 3 of the weakest teams from a year ago on their early season schedule they got a shot to win all three, bet they don't.
From there I don't wee a win, SAD.

Can't believe I am in a group that is comprised of the best NOT just fans but people on the planet.
Oh right, I forgot.. We're only allowed to assume every other team is better than us..
The Jets are starting Geno Smith, I dont care how good their defense is.. I'd take McCown over Geno any day.. Also they have a new slot corner that I've heard gives up a lot of PI calls....
Tennessee is terrible, and will be starting a Rookie QB, on the road..
I think Derek Carr has potential, but to say they will win because of him, a rookie WR (Sup Joe Haden?) And ONE LB.. is just..
Honestly, when I saw that it was you that replied.. I knew what to expect..
Obviously we'd start 3-0 if we had Brian Hoyer.. right?
I just dont get it, do I think were going to win SB this season? Not likely.. But some people act as if were a team lacking any sort of talent baffles me..
I guess you'll get to enjoy this season regardless.. If we win, we win, if we lose.. you were "right"... priorities I guess..
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?
The Browns have talent but the only way they can win is if McCown is the second coming of Gannon or Manziel has a miraculous turnaround.
It's just too hard to win in the NFL without a QB. The QB makes every position on the field better, including offense and defense. It's a trickle down effect to the entire team.
I expect the Browns to do what they always do. Hover around .500 for the first 5 or 6 weeks, then completely fall apart as the team realizes that McCown isn't very good and that they have very little chance to win games.
The only other outside hope we have is that we somehow field the best defense in the division. That may not be as long a shot as people think. Actually, on paper we just maybe the best defense in the division.

The funny thing is that McCown actually did well against the blitz in Chicago. In 2013, he completes 64% of his passes for an 8.96 yards/pass average, 5 TD and 0 INT.
Last year he did not do as well against the blitz though.
With our OL, and if we can use the RB/TE to catch short passes in pressure situations, I actually think that he'll be decent against the blitz this year. I also like that Flip seems to want to spread the defense out both vertically and horizontally.
Our success with McCown at the helm will definitely depend upon us being able to run the ball effectively. If we can keep the defense off balance, like we could last year, and if we are able to run the ball in all situations, again, as we could before Mack was hurt, then the passing game will open up, and we will see a ton of 1 on 1 situations.

We'll be under 6 for sure. This is a perfect Suck For_______? 2016 campaign.
I have to believe that this is the plan at this point. No one can reasonably expect to win much with McCown and Manziel as the QB options. Muck this season, dump Manziel, and hope that McCown can reasonably hold down the fort enough to warrant his status as a QB to bridge the gap for whoever we turn to next.

Correct me if I'm taking what you said out of context but when you say "I have to believe that this is the plan" -- are you implying that you believe that Farmer/Haslam are planning on tanking the season for higher draft status in 2016?
"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"
smh...you two really think our plan is to Suck for Cook or whoever??? Really.
I don't ever wish want or have respect for our GM nor HC to conspire to suck for anyone. I would hope to have them fired. I guarantee you they are playing to win and get in the post season.
Planned sometimes they see their best options for 2015 and McCown with a possible new revived Manziel can be successful to garnish enough wins to get in the Post season.
It not like they chose McCown over Brady or Manning or Big Ben or Rodgers - They chose McCown over Hoyer and Sanchez.
Again will McCown be great - I don't expect miracles but I think he can manage the games for wins similar to Hoyer and possibly more as in the last 7 games more. I stated a while ago that given a clean pocket McCown is very accurate. It also was shown in a recent article that he excels in play action passes...which give a QB a clean pocket. Of which they did a lot of in Chicago during his success there. Which they did hardly ever in Tampa.
Also Tampa had a terrible OL and not in running formations so that extra chip blockers were available. Where Chicago had the FB and/or TE in for extra blocking if need be.
So who knows how this will work out. But sucking for the first pick if that was the case they would start Manziel and let him go the season sink or swim...then I would say they are pretty secure in their job to plan on losing...even the Colts I doubt that was done on purpose...So I just looked and LO n BEHOLD the HC and the GM of 2011 who were in control of that 2-14 season to get LUCK...guess what they were FIRED!
So on purpose or not - Why would any HC or GM actually lose for an early pick. WHY??? To get Fired... come on both of you get real...have negative opinions but that was just silly!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

There's a fine line between "tanking" and knowing that you're not in for a very promising season. I'd classify us in the latter category. I don't think any reasonable football mind can expect much of a future from McCown or Manziel. One is a bridge quarterback, the other a mistake. If this staff truly believes we can make some noise with McCown and Manziel as our QB's, that would be extremely disconcerting from a talent evaluation standpoint.
I mean, Brian Hoyer was a bridge quarterback and we won seven games with him, and now the team is stronger at a lot of positions than it was last year. I don't believe for a second that the coaching staff and players on this team expect to take a step backwards. I'm not endorsing McCown by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the same rules apply this year that applied last year. With a good running game, and a solid defense, we'll be in every game we play with a chance to win it. That would be really disconcerting if the front office and coaching staff felt like this season is already a wash. That's just my opinion though. No disrespect to yours.
"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"
I don't expect us in the doldrums of 2 or 3 wins, but 5 or 6 seems likely. Hoyer's early performance, I would consider an exception rather than a rule, and when all was said an done, we were done in by shoddy QB play. I also don't think merely adding talent ups a teams win count. There are so many variables in play in the NFL. A 10 win team can improve its roster and win 5 the next year. We're a QB injury away from having to start Manziel, in which case I think we may be looking at the aforementioned 2-3 win doldrums (and when's the last time a QB played 16 for us?). I see your point, and definitely see the possibility of a 7-8 win season. I just don't see it as a likelihood, and I can't imagine our staff does either. I would be more troubled if the FO thought this was a viable QB situation than if they saw this as a rebuilding year. Perhaps "tank" was the wrong choice of words, but I'm not expecting much with the QB's we currently have, and can only hope we have plans to make major chances to the position next year.
I know the front office isn't thrilled about our QB situation, that's why Farmer tried to trade for Bradford and then tried to move up for Mariota. I just have to believe that Pettine and the rest of the vets on the team believe that with a strong enough supporting group, McCown can help this club win games. Whether or not that ends up being a reality is another question entirely.
