Why Florida? Voters explain their logic Human opinion should NOT be deciding things. A Championship is not an opinion... it is an earned absolute. Your right, here's a way to look at it with no opinion. You have three viable teams: OSU (won their conference), UF (won their conference), and UM (did NOT win their confernece). Which is the odd man out here? I think it's pretty obvious. Devil's Advocating here: Show me where in the NCAA/BCS by-laws where it say's you have to win your confrence to be in the title game? It's suppose to be the two best teams and I think where the flack michigan fans have last week the voters had Michigan ranked higher than Florida because not a single one of them thought that USC was going to lose to UCLA. But once UCLA won all of a sudden Michigan is worse.

Michigan played 3 weeks ago, out of site out of mind, Florida is the new flavor of the week like USC was last week.

I did feel they got the shaft.......big time.
I didn't feel that way until after Oklahoma didn't even show up,...then I was second guessing. That was a tough year,...but I will repeat for the benefit of all AGAIN, neither USC nor Oklahoma played a 1-AA school that season, there were no dramatic changes in the final week's voting process that I remember, AND to it's credit, the AP did not flop out and vote Auburn a mythical title. I can't even remember who they played in their bowl game,...
Does that constitute voter ignorance of SEC football "value?" Perhaps, but it might also have been a "down" year for the SEC (history lesson, please ) ---just like a lot of folks talk about the Big 10 this season,...?? I'm not justifying the system's flaws--we all know there are many. You could blame the computers for that "snub;" I personally blame the NCAA for allowing a top tier team to schedule The Citadel. And I'll unequivocally state NOW that I do NOT want to play Youngstown State next year,...but it's going down anyway. Luckily the Buckeyes will probably not be in the title hunt next year, at least not to the degree they were this. JMMHO.

http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/9849348/2You don't know whether to applaud Jim Tressel or slap him. Instead of griping over Urban Meyer's methods, Lloyd Carr should have emulated them. (Getty Images) If this were a court of law, Tressel recusing himself from voting in the coaches poll on Sunday would be admirable. But the BCS isn't a murder trial. All Tressel was asked to do -- what he had promised to do -- was submit a ballot in the final poll. You know by now that Tressel abstained from voting in the final poll that is used in the BCS standings, calling it a "conflict of interest." "I didn't think it was appropriate for us to put a ballot out for who we would play," Tressel said. "I didn't think it was the right thing to do." Stop right there. Let's get rid of the legalese. This wasn't a court proceeding. The Ohio State coach made it sound like a group decision, saying it came about after consultation with athletic director Gene Smith. No, this was Jim Tressel going Washington politico on us. We found you breaking into Watergate, Jim, and you still denied. The war is going to spit in Iraq, and you continue to spin. If you asked Tressel if the sky was blue, he'd get back to you on it after carefully consulting with the board of trustees. Jim, how about growing a pair in this case? Let's call this what it is: You were afraid that if you voted Michigan No. 2, that you'd give Florida bulletin board material. If you voted Florida No. 2, That School Up North would hate you even more. Life is tough. There are players out there living hand-to-Pell Grant. Suddenly, you're worried about how they're going to feel? That's only a big deal to you when it threatens to impact your front lawn. You know, where the TP job would go when Lloyd Carr found your home address. You made a promise to USA Today to vote. Honor it. This was the first time in the paper's 16-year involvement in the poll that someone abstained. And guess what? It didn't matter. Florida would have ended up No. 2 if you had ranked it 25th and Michigan No. 1. That just looks bad, a borderline grandstand move. Your poll credibility already was called into question in September when you proudly declared your No. 1 vote for Texas. That conveniently happened to be the week you played Texas. Oops. That's not what USA Today found when it checked your ballot. More evidence that the polls themselves lack a certain public confidence. An Oklahoma writer was thrown out of the AP process when he thought Oklahoma had lost one week (it won) and voted the Sooners inordinately low. Advertisement However, another AP media member left a team out altogether and was allowed to keep his vote. Sunday, Ball State coach Brady Hoke forgot to rank Arkansas in the coaches poll. He apologized profusely, saying he was busy recruiting. Poll hint: Brady, how about using the tried-and-true method of comparing last year's ballot to this week's? You also want to hug Tressel for getting it. There is a conflict of interest, a broader one in allowing coaches to determine who gets the bowl money. They are essentially lining their own pockets, making sure they all get their incentive bonuses. Four of the five Big Ten coaches in the poll ranked Michigan No. 2. Illinois' Ron Zook selected Florida No. 2 essentially on the strength of taking pride in recruiting a lot of players who got Urban Meyer to the BCS title game. Is that any worse than all seven voting SEC coaches picking the Gators No. 2? Lloyd Carr whined about Urban Meyer's campaigning the past two weeks. Lloyd, where have you been? Oh, now we remember, tidying up around the office. Your season was done two weeks ago. If the elves are going to run the toy factory, why not campaign? Meyer would have been derelict in his duty it he didn't. Michigan wasn't playing any football. The floor was Meyer's. You can't have it both ways, Lloyd. You called Tressel "real slick" for abstaining. Then you pouted when Meyer correctly pointed out that his team won its conference championship while yours didn't. The BCS computers are waiting to take over if you like, Lloyd. The sanest man on the planet right now might be Florida's coach. He was asked to vote last year and turned it down. "I'll never vote," Meyer said. "Can you imagine if Coach Tressel voted for us, or it was the other way around?" Imagine it? We'd love it if only for the potential egging-his-house factor. We also understand why Tressel didn't vote. Just be honest, tell us the real reasons why.

I wasnt really posting it to take a shot at Tressell. I mean, I understand why he didnt, but like in the article I think he needs to, thats a part of the deal. Really it just shows another problem with all these polls and the system.

Oh, I knew you weren't,...like I stated earlier, if he HAD to, my guess is "Slick Jimmy," being a man of honor and integrity, would have voted for Michigan, despite the consequences. (i.e. Florida bulletin board, a possible loss in the rematch, etc.)

Well, as an outsider, I can tell you that if Tressel had voted for Michigan and ended up playing Florida and lost... the first OSU fan that used the vote or some alleged bulletin board material as an excuse for the loss would have gotten more of these... .... than they've ever seen...

By Bomani Jones Page 2 web page The BCS really isn't that bad. No, really. It's not. It doesn't give a "true" national champion, but what will? Playoff? How many teams? When would it start? Would it be an eight-team playoff, beginning the week after conference championship games, smack-dab in the middle of final exams at most schools? Are fans -- and students -- expected to pay to travel for these games right before Christmas? Want to add a plus-one to the bowls? Sounds OK on paper, but that would eliminate one of the best things about bowl games -- every team has had weeks to rest, making them the only postseason games without weary competitors. Further, playing that deep into January might interfere with the NCAA's gentleman's agreement with the NFL not to step on each other's turfs (the reason the NFL doesn't air Saturday games until late in the season). So don't bet on it. And does anyone really think a playoff would stop the complaining around this time of year? No matter what, somebody on the margins will whine. The BCS chooses two teams to play for the national championship, and there's almost always a third team complaining about being left out. Expand to an eight-team playoff, and get ready for talk radio debates on how it's impossible for some committee to decide which two-loss team is the best. So until someone comes up with an idea for how to make a playoff work, the BCS is the best we've got. And the glass is half full. Lost in the bitchin' and moanin' is that the BCS, while far from perfect, is a significant improvement over the pre-Bowl Coalition/Alliance/BCS system. Here are the actual matchups for BCS games this year. BCS Championship: Ohio State vs. Florida Rose Bowl: Michigan vs. USC Sugar Bowl: LSU vs. Notre Dame Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. Boise State Orange Bowl: Wake Forest vs. Louisville Now check out what the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta and Orange Bowls would probably look like if were still playing under the rules of 15 years ago (with no BCS Championship game.) Of course, there was a Southwest Conference back then, but let's ignore that complication. Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. USC Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. Notre Dame Fiesta Bowl: Texas vs. Auburn Orange Bowl: Oklahoma vs. LSU As champions of the Big Ten and Pac-10, respectively, Ohio State and USC would head to Pasadena. SEC winner Florida would go to New Orleans to take on an at-large foe, most likely bowl darling Notre Dame. Big 12 (formerly the Big 8) champ Oklahoma would go to Miami to take on LSU, which would probably get a nod because of its top-five ranking and its fans' willingness to travel. The Fiesta Bowl, one of the few bowls to give fat payouts without having automatic tie-ins, would have a hard time passing up Texas and Auburn, traditional powers with lots of fans willing to hop in the Winnebago and head to Glendale (thus guaranteeing a sellout). Now, check out the good the BCS has done. 1. Without the BCS, it wouldn't even be possible for Michigan or Florida to play Ohio State. Florida would be tied to the Sugar Bowl. Looking for Michigan? You'd find the Wolverines in ? 2. Tampa. Without the BCS, Michigan would have gone there as a choice of the Outback Bowl (known as the Hall of Fame Bowl in 1991). The Big Ten had a tie-in, where the Hall of Fame Bowl selected the second Big Ten team. Think Wolverine fans are complaining now? Just imagine how that one would go over. 3. The BCS provides a perfect Sugar Bowl matchup: LSU and Notre Dame. The Sugar Bowl comes back to the Superdome with the local school playing against the nation's most famous Catholic school, in a heavily Catholic state that's spent most of the last year and a half talking to God. It gets no better than that, and 'twas only possible with the BCS. Otherwise, the purple and gold would spend New Year's scaring the bejeezus out of the "beautiful people" on South Beach. That would be really entertaining, but nothing like the Sugar Bowl. 4. The BCS gives a feel-good story -- Boise State gets a day on a grand stage and a fat check for its troubles. If the Broncos beat Oklahoma, it's a beautiful story. Should they be exposed, at least that's one less "what if?" 5. This year's Orange Bowl is the least sexy BCS matchup since Utah-Pittsburgh in the '04 Fiesta Bowl. But in a week when so many are crying about what team deserves to be in the BCS Championship Game, folks might want to remember the days when big-money bowls were only accountable to big boys and the bottom line. The Big East has been better than expected, but who really thinks Louisville would have gotten to the Orange Bowl without the BCS? Go ahead and hate the BCS. Just don't forget that things could -- and have been -- worse. And let me know when you're sure how to make things better.

Thanks for the read 'Buck,....'Peen won't buy it, but that's his right.
Aside from the way Michigan got treated, I for one am definitely glad we have what we have compared to what we HAD.
What an outlook, today's teams in yesterday's Bowls. # 1 Ohio State vs. # 8 USC. Michigan nowhere in sight, yuk,... # 2 Florida vs. # 11 Notre Dame. One wins by a field goal and the Gators crush The Irish. Split National Title,...AGAIN.
It ain't right, but it's what we have and it's better than we had. Bottom line.

Playoff? How many teams? When would it start? Would it be an eight-team playoff, beginning the week after conference championship games, smack-dab in the middle of final exams at most schools? Huh? To put it bluntly, WTF is this person talking about? This argument makes absolutely NO SENSE because every other division in college football has a playoff system. Why should division I be any different? If the powers that be are THAT concerned about the students well being, then why don't they adobt a BCS formula at EVERY level of college football? That's just it, the people that make these arguments (when pertaining to Division I), are absolute hipocrits. If they're that worried about students, why don't they concentrate on changing the other divisions and NOT concentrate on avoiding a playoff in ONE division. If playoff formats are that detrimental to student athletes, then eliminate them across the board in every sport. Just look at basketball, in many cases it extends across 3 quarters now at colleges because of the NCAA adding 2 more games to the regular season schedule. I think it is insaine to argue against a college playoff in football when basketball's REGULAR SEASON essentially pushes student athletes to the limits. I have yet to hear anyone talking about consolidating the field in the NCAA tournament, so why should we keep college football from deciding it on the field? Again, it makes no sense. Are fans -- and students -- expected to pay to travel for these games right before Christmas? What is the difference between paying for travel expenses AFTER christmas? LMAO. So do the proverbial money trees finally grow bills after the christmas season?
