Personally I don't know why anyone would want to celebrate the symbol of the Confederacy, with all of the negative history that comes with it ..... but you are correct that this is all reactionary BS. If it was that important, then lead on the issue, don't just jump in line when public opinion turns.

I'm just not a big fan of making policy decisions based on extreme immediate emotion and I'm reluctant to recommend policy decisions based on isolated incidences.

I don't think this is emotional. This should have happened a long time ago. It probably shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

150 years of racism plugged up the ears pretty good alright. Maybe if they lowered the flag to half mast when the other flags were, it may have gotten a year or two more of racist driven flight at the SC State capitol.

Really tho...I care. Most of the country cares, or it wouldn't be an issue. I know there has been a debate about this symbol/flag for 150 years. It's long overdue. And it's about time!

What's offensive to some, may mean something entirely different to others.

I don't like hardcore rap music. I don't like what it sounds like, and I don't like the lyrics and the message some of the songs promote. Do I get enough people angry at hardcore rap music so it gets banned from stores?

You know, there is some truth to that. If we had more shooters or if Blacks retaliated by shooting up Whites, that Nut guy could have started something. Thank God it seems to be headed in the opposite direction. Thank God and cooler heads.

It's "...shall rise again".. and you misinterpret the saying.. as 4 of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the US are in the south and the rest are in parts of the country that weren't even part of the US at the time (most in Texas), while 4 of the slowest growing cities are in what was the north at the time... auto makers moving south, international companies locating here in the south, technology companies moving south, people moving south...

The south is rising again right before your very eyes and has been for decades...

It's how funny how the victors get to write history.. I wonder what we, here in the colonies in 2015, would think of traitors like George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson if a few things had gone differently and we would have lost... I wonder if folks would be holding on to the original flag with 13 stars on it... maybe finding just a little bit of pride in what our ancestors tried to do in standing up for ourselves....

I can kind of answer that for you, as I've had the experience of schooling in the north and south.

In the north, all you ever heard about in elementary school was the pilgrims. In the south, the first permanent settlement in what would become the US is Jamestown, VA.

The most Confederate battle flags per capita is in West Virginia (a symbol of independence there).

Virginia had a state holiday on January 15th for Lee/Jackson day (Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson). After some federal changes, Washington and Lincoln's birthdays were combined, and we had Lee/Jackson/King day in VA. Now it's just MLK day.

What is that supposed to be indicative of, though? Much like when people say 'Well, the Democrats were for the Iraq War!" Of course they were. It was politically viable. And defending the stars and bars was viable up until a few days ago. I never thought "well your party said what they thought would get elected, too" was a good retort. It makes the people arguing the butt of the joke. As for the whole flag issue itself, it should be banned from government sanctioned areas. This blitz to erase it from commerce is ridiculous.
