Just a comment to the couple of people who responded to my question:

Quote:
In my mind, it's all about recognizing the problems of the past and then moving forward to try and fix the problems rather than dwelling on the those problems and using them as an excuse to justify why we don't like each other.

I agree that we have to recognize the problem of the past, and I think that most people have a pretty good idea what those problems were. So, if we have a pretty good idea of what the problems of the past are, the how do we fix them? Furthermore, what do we do about people who see the solving of certain problems as actually being the problem?

Quote:
Love. First, you aren't going to fix everybody, there is always the chance that somebody like this could come out of nowhere.. this kid didn't come out of nowhere. He bragged about what he was going to do to his friends who now feel like crap because they didn't believe him. Though, from what I understand, they did try to hide his gun. This kid shot and killed 9 people and his stated goal is that he wanted to start a race war. In order to feel like that was possible, he had to feel like the racial divide was such that one incident could spark a war, he had to feel like he would have significant support for what he did, he had to feel that the animosity felt by blacks would be so strong that they would retaliate... why would he feel that way? Because that's the impression one gets if they watch the news and the reporting on things like Ferguson and other places... that the hatred is deep enough that one shot could set the whole thing off... That part, we as a culture can fix that by changing the way we treat each other, changing the way we talk about each other, change the way we consume "news", change the way we assign blame. Is it going to be easy? Hell no it's not going to be easy, changing the way a couple hundred million people respond and view each other is never going to be easy. Changing the way we consume news isn't going to be easy, stop giving the biggest platform to the loudest, most radical mouths. Be slow to anger, quick to forgive, reach first for understanding and common ground instead of pointing fingers and placing blame.

Sounds like becoming a Christian might just help ...... but many want no part of that, and others have a perverse idea of what Christianity actually means. I would simplify it to 2 things. As Jesus said: Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, mind, and soul, and love your neighbor was yourself. I think that if we could get all people to do these 2 things, the world would be a dramatically improved place. However, many want no part of such things.

Quote:
John F. Kennedy said, "The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing." So if we all consider ourselves good men (people)... then do something. Reach out to people, find ways to help your fellow man regardless of their skin color, their sexual orientation, their social status.... do as Charleston has admirably done and stand up together in a unified fashion against evil and say this is NOT about black vs white, this is about one radical lunatic against a community of people.... if somebody does something evil in the name of Christianity, and you consider yourself a Christian, be the first to stand up, don't look for reasons to defend it or equivocate it, call it what it is.... same thing if you are black or white or gay or Muslim or southern or northern.... if it's done in the name of something you hold dear, be the first to stand up.... let the people who do horrible things know that they will not be defended by "their own", that nobody is going to glorify what they did, nobody is going to try to assign some measure of nobility to evil deeds. There is NO justification for shooting 9 people, there is NO justification for burning and looting stores, there is NO justification for harboring criminals or hiding them or defending them, there is NO justification for speaking hate, even if you disagree.

I agree with this as well, and I think that many Christians have done exactly as you have suggested. Unfortunately, this world is a sinful place, and we can try to change hearts, but we will never change the world. I do think that we should try our best to change hearts to be more loving. Unfortunately, there are going to be kids who are going to learn hatred from a young age, from their families and local communities ..... and this is going to be the hardest to root out. Make no mistake, hatred runs in all possible directions. We will never be able to do away with hatred as long as there is sun upon the earth, and there will be sin upon the earth until Christ returns.

Anyway, how do we reach kids who are taught hatred from childhood? How do we reach children whose parents will insulate them from any teachings that run contrary to their beliefs? We might reach some, but others will fall. I have this feeling that because of sin in the world, that a certain equilibrium is going to be maintained. Further, in the world at large, it is far easier to convince people to hate another people than it is to convince them to love a people they are not familiar with. This is an unfortunate truth. It is often easier to find differences between people than it is to find similarities. I believe that this is because of the sin nature within man himself.

As a practical matter, I think that meeting the unfamiliar can help people who are not raised in an environment of hatred. The example of a Black and White child is a good one. However, if the parents are not willing partners, even this can be twisted.

I think that progress can be made, but, unfortunately, it will be limited progress. I think that this world is too far gone for complete unity to ever be accomplished. In too many areas of the world, in too many ways, the strong continue to prey upon the weak. Slavery is still practiced in certain parts of the world. Hatreds are almost genetic in some parts of the world. It really makes me wonder if things can change, or if, as the Bible says, the world was thrown into sin by Adam, and will remain there until the world ends. The more I consider the world, the more I believe in evil as a tangible thing. I said it before, and I'll say it again, I look at what this man did at the church, and also what others have done .... sometimes even to those they profess to love ... and see no other answer than evil ...... just plain evil.

I think that we can defeat a lot of things in the world ..... I think that others can be tempered ..... but evil, in this fallen world, is going to have its rule for as long as this world exists.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I know it doesn't help fix racism but I just wanted to mention it.

no, they're not.

unless you been in a mass murder incident, and fired, you have no idea what you would've done in that situation.

i heard the same BS when soldiers was like "this what imma do when the enemy ambushes us".

cut it out. you don't know.

Are you aware that just because you invented a scenario in your mind, that doesn't make a fact? Because if I'm living in your world, then you saved the church and I'm happily married to Meryl Streep (but I'm having a secret affair with Taylor Swift).

So 40 would bring a gun to a place that worships a deity who said "Turn the other cheek." And someone who openly walked into his death? The philosophical difference is so stark.

Your use of the broad brush and comparing yourself to today's Media is spot on. I can't see the difference either.

Ok, we're good then. Or the kneejerk reaction, quick take down that confederate flag and stop selling Dukes of Hazzard toys on e-bay because they have confederate flags on them... done? Yes, I'm sure your spidey senses would have picked up on it happening several rows behind you in a church as you sat with your head bowed in prayer, then hearing little more than the rustling of a shirt you would have begun to draw your weapon than as he rose and spoke 4 words you would have wheeled in your seat, shooting directly between the bowed heads in the rows behind you, landing a center-mass kill shot before he could get his finger on the trigger.... Then you could stand, spin the gun around your finger and reholster it, tip your cap to the ladies, and ride off into Charleston on your horse.

You forgot where he blows the smoke from the barrel after spinning the gun by the trigger guard. wink

in your 30 years of...carrying, how many potential mass shootings did you stop?

or while the mass shootings were taking place?

hell have you ever shot anybody?

Why would anyone need to scream and hide behind you? Do you think you're the only one who carries a gun?

rofl

Point being, if this guy is four rows behind you, you won't even know what's going on until shots are being fired.

You are a funny little man.

So stupid. Try getting facts unless you are only here to make fun. There were about a dozen people gathered closely together when the Good Reverend walked in with the killer, bringing him in to join the small group. The killer sat right next to the Rev. He drew his weapon and shot the Reverend first, right there in front of everyone. A woman tried to talk him down but it was too late. Witnesses told friends the killer reloaded 5 times.

oh so you're like that old dude that mistaken his taser for a gun and shot that guy while he was on the ground.

that makes it so much better.

Being trained and responsible, knowing when to run and when to fight is the responsibility, in my mind, of ever Concealed Carry Licensed gun owner, otherwise that gun may be used to end your

Let me guess - if you were a slave, you wouldn't have stood for it? You would've gone full Django and freed yourself from the tyranny? Don't mean to make too much fun, but surely you understand why everyone finds this amusing (I hope).

I expected it from a bunch of posters who pee when they see a gun.

We are at 12 pages now, somebody start a Fixing Racism thread and bring the lock and keys to this one.

I just think it's funny that you somehow believe you have a patent on carrying a firearm for decades and knowing how to use one. You don't.

I'd venture to guess you're one of many and I'm one of them.

That was a quote from Predator... I thought we were going for the whole movie theme here.

I'm not opposed to self-protection but..... Taking a gun to church still seems just a bit hypocritical to me... I'm going to a church, to pray to an omnipotent God... a God who is big enough to see all things and a God who has a plan for my life and my death and what happens after that. I'm going to a church to confess my complete faith in this omnipotent God of the universe.... but just in case, I'm going to take my glock... Yea, see that doesn't make much sense to me.
