http://www.si.com/nfl/2015/07/09/nfl-salaries-cap-allocation-vikings-falcons-browns

Neat to see the graphs/data on how teams have allocated their cap spending. The Browns are the only team in the NFL to spend more (54%) on the defensive side of the ball.

Is this a product of Farmer/Pettine putting their money where their mouth is? Is it a bi-product of us simply not having a good, well-paid QB? Are the Browns ahead of the curve in a league-wide (eventual) push to return to conservative, defensive football?

Defense

The Browns have allocated a league-high $82.1 million this season to their defense, which is projected to take up 54 percent of Cleveland's 2015 payroll. The Browns are the only team spending over half of its cap space on that side of the ball.

That philosophy may stem from Browns owner Jimmy Haslam’s desire to build a hard-nosed team similar to the Steelers franchise he once owned a minority stake in. A big reason why Haslam has the freedom to lavishly spend on defense is his team’s enviable situation regarding dead money.

Cleveland currently has just $1.9 million of dead money on its 2015 payroll due to former players who were cut or traded. The Browns have largely avoided being hamstrung by unwieldy long-term contracts. Even Ben Tate, who was cut after a massively disappointing first year, is only taking up $750,000 in 2015.

All that’s left for the Browns’ defense to do is actually earn its extravagant collective salary. Cleveland finished 23rd in total defense in 2014 and gave up a league-worst 141.6 rushing yards per game. General manager Ray Farmer has rewarded marquee secondary members such as Joe Haden and Donte Whitner, and the selection of hulking defensive tackle Danny Shelton in the first round of this year's draft suggests the team is taking the cheaper route in building up the trenches with young talent.

I don't think the piece has their numbers right. I'm not going to go thru the trouble of counting the dollars but if 77 million equals 54% of our salaries that means we spend roughly 70 million on offense and that would bring our cap to about 145 million, no way that number is right.

So what are you saying we can't trust this article and discuss it further?

Pettine stated that the Defense was closer to being finished than the offense and they went and pretty much finished it this year. Now they upgrade from here on in and/or replace guys that will go either aging FA or Players looking to see what they are worth in FA. We don't think they are worth a large amount.

Most definitely without a Franchise QB contract we have a major Cap Gap...

Are you talking to ME? Na can't be. rofl

Talk all ya want but its hard to bite for me when the idea of the piece is to show where teams are spending their money and it sure looks like the numbers are wrong but be my guest....

Do the numbers seem right to you??? Didn't thin so....

Kinda hard to draw any definitive conclusions in regards to our spending and building of the team because we have had so many different regimes in the last several years.

The cap is $143.28 mill this year. We have a higher cap then that though do to carry over and according to "Over The Cap" our cap space is $161.2 mill right now.

Here's a good site on the Browns cap numbers.

Not making it into anything intense...my question is if its all predicated on Numbers as the fact given and the one you happen to check is Mathematically wrong. Do we trust this info to be legit? Or the facts are correct and just their Math is wrong. That's all. Do you trust them...Its your thread and info. I am going by your comments - rarely do I open up links. I trust what you say is there.

I do not know the math of anything with the cap ... all I know is Sports Illustrated took the time to break down each team's spending with graphs/charts ... it seems pretty legit (maybe the percentages are accurate and the amounts are different?)

As someone pointed out, the D is most complete, that and no long term 1&2 WRs and no franchise QB probably tell most of the story. Put those three pieces In place and get them locked in long term and that spending percentage likely shifts dramatically.

^^ THIS. We're allowed to be "over" the cap due to unspent cap money that we have carried over from previous years.

Also, they account for Dead Money and Special Teams spending in those charts, too.

Where did you find that 77 million number.

I looked through and I keep seeing 82 mil

Total Salary
$157MILLION
Offense Salary
$64.3MILLION
Defense Salary
$82.1MILLION
Special Teams Salary
$3.36MILLION
Dead Money
$1.89MILLION

Although the numbers still don't add up

Hey the offense is gonna suck like nobody's business. We all know that, but Farmer's job is on the line if this defense isn't pretty damn good this year ...and it rightfully should be. If we're close to the bottom again in run defense...adios Mr Text.

143mil(the NFL cap) -54% = 77 mil..is my guess.
-------------------------------------------------

Now let's do the math.

Browns total current salary is....157mil - 54% = 84.7mil

84.7 mil minus....
82.1 "d" salary = 2.6mil minus....
3.6mil for ST salary = -760k minus....
1.89mil dead money = -2.65mil over the cap

Total Browns Salary 157mil minus
NFL Cap -----------143mil=.... wait for it

......
......
2.65mil over the cap.

Adds up to me. Well I did round some numbers but it's pretty darn close

Who cares what the run defense is... especially if the Pass Defense is rocking? Last I checked, a game is won with Points scored, not Yards ran.

And give it up with the 'Mr Text' thing... most of us are over 13 years of age, so you don't need almost-clever, pseudo-comical nicknames to show that you harbor a biased dislike and opinion of someone.

Awww did I hurt your feelings?...get over it! Psuedo-comical? lol Aren't you a clever guy! Get lost!

By the way did Cincy game show that a game can be lost by the run defense alone? Now I do realize I cannot come close to your superior football knowledge.

I'm still lost. smile

64.3 + 82.1 + 3.36 + 1.89 = 151.65mil
That's what I meant by it didn't add up. smile

Which is 8.65mil over the 143mil cap or 5.35 under the 157mil total they claim.

So you are another one that refuses to blame the freakin defense for anything? The defense many times the whole year last year couldn't get off the stupid field from start to finish. How is that the offense's fault all the time? My god I hate that stupid argument.

Did someone really say "who cares about our run defense"? Wow. Stopping the run is everything to a defense. Forcing the offense to be one dimensional is what kills most offenses unless they have a Brees or Manning.

Not sure calling a guy Mr. Text is even close to as juvenile and stupid as The Three Stooges moniker that was running rampant on here a short time ago. Oh, the Mangina one was also another winner that seemed fairly popular. I'm not going to call Farmer Mr. Text, but that name pales in comparison to the other two.

Wasn't the combination of Mangini/Kokinis once popular as well ... Mankok

I agree, the name Text is not nearly as bad as some..

On the other hand, I have a hard time taking anyone's post too serious if they show such a bias as to refuse to use a true name. It can be particularly difficult for newer posters to even figure out who they are talking about.

I know I have had to think about some of the nicknames in the past to understand what the poster was discussing. smile

After the first 3 games. We had a bye...got to give time for the new D to gel.

I am curious. Which games exactly did we lose do the Defense.

I know I remember a late drive by the Colts? But you can't blame the d for that loss? Or can you.

Just wondering if you actually know games are you are just making that claim in general terms. The D wasn't 'perfect but they seem to have gotten better and better as the season wore on and that was despite some tough losses of personnel. I now we had bad run Stats. But outside of the Bengal game that everything went wrong just where couldn't we stop the run? That is cost us games - I know it cost us stats.

I'd rather be Correct with the facts than right. If our D lost games again in the last 13? Which was it?

jmh?

I watched that Indy game a few days ago ... Definitely can't blame the d in that one. We had two defensive TDs and multiple TOs and sacks ... Really held down luck.

Hoyer was awful. Just awfu ... The O cost us

And give it up with the 'Mr Text' thing... most of us are over 13 years of age, so you don't need almost-clever, pseudo-comical nicknames to show that you harbor a biased dislike and opinion of someone.

And he didn't cuss once! Way to go.
