Ohio State recruiting: State Secrets - Buckeyes top rankings for class of 2017

Ohio State's incredibly successful weekend has only added to the high standard that the Buckeyes' recruiting prowess currently stands at. With '17 offensive lineman Jake Moretti adding his name to the growing list of Ohio State commitments in 2017, the recruiting class rose in the rankings for 247Sports. It seems like every new year brings expectations of the newest recruiting class being Urban Meyer's best, but the class of '17 makes a strong case with its fast start. Including the four-star Moretti, the Buckeyes have added quarterback Danny Clark, athlete Bruce Judson, offensive tackle Josh Myers, running back Todd Sibley, and defensive backs Shaun Wade, and Marcus Williamson.

Those players combined are good enough for first in the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings, as Ohio State leads the country. Following the Buckeyes are Miami, Florida State, Alabama, USC, TCU, LSU, Baylor, Notre Dame, and Arizona State rounding out the top 10. In addition, Ohio State has more commitments in the class of '17 ranked in the Rivals 100 than any other school, with four:

Among those commitments are Marcus Williamson (ranked 96th), Bruce Judson (ranked 85th), Shaun Wade (ranked 19th), and Josh Myers (ranked 3rd). The next highest team, Florida State, has three commitments in the Rivals 100, still a respectable showing for the Seminoles.
Darnay Holmes to visit

Continuing with the theme of the class of 2017, Ohio State locked up yet another talented recruit for a visit for the upcoming Friday Night Lights camp in Columbus. '17 athlete Darnay Holmes will be making a trip from California to showcase his skills and compete in front of Urban Meyer and the rest of the Buckeyes' coaching staff. The 5'11, 190-pound Holmes has been clocked at a 4.48 in the 40-yard dash and is rated as a five-star under the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Ranked as the 15th best player in the country, the best athlete, and second-best prospect at any position from the state of California, Holmes would be a player that anyone should be happy to see in the scarlet and gray. While it may seem unlikely right now, crazier things have happened in the past. Plus, once recruits make that trip on campus, there's always a chance of coach Meyer pulling off yet another mastery display of his recruiting skills.

Considering Wisconsin trounced the second best team in the SEC, I'm not too worried about the vaunted SEC and their schedule. You can brag about a schedule, but you gotta win some games... Especially when facing the 3rd string QB.

I'd buy the "beat up" excuse if teams didn't have almost an ENTIRE month off to rest and prepare for one opponent. If guys are "too beat up" after a month off, they need to just give up any hope of playing on Sunday's.

Alabama has an incredible record under Nick Saban when they get extra time for an opponent... Season openers, week after byes, and bowl games.

They were straight up beaten. They gave up 281 rushing yards, 230 to one guy. They were eaten alive by OSU's offensive line.

The best part of all was that they were beaten in SEC country.

My favorite part of SEC fan is when he takes credit for his teams winning against other conferences in bowl games, then rolls out the excuses of being "beat up" or "not wanting to be there" or some other horrible garble when his teams take it on the chin. Last bowl season was so enjoyable.

When it comes to answering the question of your cupcake schedule, you have no answer.
You have a nauseatingly comedic schedule this year as you cruise into the final 4.

This final 4 was made to eliminate the SEC from title contention. The SEC is SO powerful that no one in the league will have a decent record, because of cannibalization.

You mean like Auburn? Who lost to Wisconsin in their Bowl Game? The same Wisconsin that Ohio State beat 59-0?

Or Ole Miss? Who beat 'Bama but lost to TCU 42-3 in the Peach Bowl?

Or Mississippi State? Who would have beat you guys and been SEC *champs* were it not for a garbage call by the refs and got crushed by Georgia freakin' Tech in their bowl game? (Down 21 with 2:30 to go)

Maybe you meant LSU... who lost to Notre Dame -- NOTRE DAME -- in their Bowl game.

SEC West is a good division, but they're not the Titans you make them out to be. "OH MY GOSH! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS SEC TEAM BEAT THIS OTHER SEC TEAM?! THE SEC IS SO AMAZING!"

And *to eliminate the SEC from title contention* are you kidding? With a week or two left in the season there was discussion of if there would be two SEC teams in the playoff and that we would see an All-SEC title game. An SEC team had the #1 seed. They just got their butts kicked by a cupcake B1G team.

What difference does the schedule make? If you're that good you should beat the other team!

However, a easy schedule pays dividends at the end of the season. There is no easy schedule in the SEC. JMHO.

Next years Buckeye team could be the greatest in school history. Not exactly shocking.

I always/often, figure the Buckeyes will lose 3 games each year and am pleasantly surprised if they do better.

I really could see it this year, first off I think they get Virginia Tech again, and it's a revenge game, but they've never beaten Virginia Tech, .. how many schools can say they've never lost to Ohio State, 1-0 all time. I know the Buckeyes will be fired up for revenge, but I could see it somehow going hay-wire and end up a loss... (see the 2013-14 season big 10 championship game vs Michigan state, kind of scenario)

Then I think back, that going into last year the Buckeyes were about winless in bowls for their previous 3 tries, and purdue beat them once in the last 7 years, prompting the purdue coach's comment " get used to it" haha! I could see a team, a real loser big 10 team getting a fluke win against them. maybe one of those Ohio teams they started playing again but haven't lost to in several decages.

Then there's Michigan, of all the years to see a Michigan win in the Ohio st vs Michigan rivalry, how about the first time they get Harbaugh as a coach in Michigan, if I recall correctly, and hey
... as I hate to say it, a local boy, Pickerington Ohio, is a Michigan tight end, I think a junior this year, and in the last two games vs the buckeyes already has at least two td's vs them. How are the Buckeyes going to stop Jake Butts.

Sure it's possible, I could see it, 3 losses for the Buckeyes, especially anytime in sports when anyone is so "over the moon" favored that the opponent doesn't even belong on the field.
Tyson vs Douglas, Goliath vs David, and even 0hio state 14- Florida 41, going into that game, Florida didn't even belong, a couple other teams were more deserving. If I remember right.

Sure the Buckeye's CAN win, but they don't HAVE to win, NOBODY is guaranteed to win in sports, remember that. They have to earn it, just like they had to every other time they did it.

Kind of a mind blowing stat about OSU. Over the last decade they are 99-0 when they have a 8 point lead or greater in the 4th quarter.
