I really wish they'd just provide an image/iso file of the OS so for users that prefer to install that way, myself included, we have that option.

I am thinking about waiting until I see what others encounter after doing it.

I've been running Windows 10 Insider Preview Pro this month. It will upgrade to RTM this week as part of Windows Update.

If you haven't used Windows 10 you will be pleased. It's fast and pretty easy to use. It also steals some nice OSX features like multiple workspaces smile

You should be able to get a product key once Windows 10 releases on your PC, then use that along with an iso downloaded from microsoft.com to do a fresh install.

This is what I am "hoping", but there is no concrete evidence or anything really about how they'll set it up. If I can get access to my key prior to installation, I am going to upgrade ASAP. If not, I'll just play the wait game as I listen to feedback and etc.

/prepares for the glut of co-workers bringing their PC in 3 days after they upgrade asking if I can remove it.

Not because it isn't good or even better, but simply because it is different, and many folks don't take easy to change.

note: Amazing how Windows has had a "start" button in the lower left corner since Windows 3.1, mid 90's. And now that it doesn't specifically say "start" on it anymore, when I tell them "press the start button" they says "Where is that?" banghead banghead

I'm mildly computer literate. I felt the last few Windows versions were trying too hard to emulate a Mac. Didn't like them. Apprehensive about the latest OS.

How on earth do you think Windows 8 was trying to emulate a Mac?!? It isn't even close.

That said, MS is doing what they need to do - get people to Windows 10 and hope that sparks their mobile platform. They will be the only company positioned to have the exact same look and feel regardless of the device. They know the PC is dying and they need to get into the mobile market in order to survive. Put an OS on all current users PC's and hope they stick with what they know when getting a tablet or phone.

I like the Windows phone interface, but the lack of apps and descent hardware kills any thought of me getting one. If they can get more users then they may be able to get the apps and in turn better hardware. It's hard to believe before the iPhone that MS had around 90% of the smartphone market and watched it go totally to Apple and Google within a few years.

I think that they also want to have "all" (or as close to it as is possible) PCs running the same version of Windows. It helps MS with updates, security, and it helps software writers if they don't have to cross test their software across 4 or 5 different versions of Windows.

Absolutely - but the long term goal of this is to get a larger share in mobile as the PC is dying.

I think some of these big corps spread that the PC is dying hoping to make it a reality. Unless you are only talking about desktop PCs, there is no way it is dying anytime soon.

Much of the shift toward mobile platforms has to do with software and profits. Software as an app is much easier (and cheaper) to license, distribute and maintain. Software piracy and cracks are on the decline, but prices for common software and apps are too.

The desktop PC or Laptop will remain a favorite for developers for years to come, but like all tech; smaller, stronger, faster, cheaper is always going to be better. Mobile platforms and today's apps along with developing and server platforms available in those technologies has quite a bit of catching up to do if it is ever going to replace PC tech completely.

I'll never give up my PC for development! We certainly need that for dev, but that is a small percentage of users. Gamers will of course still want super powerful PC's as well. They will never go away completely, but to make them the bread and butter of your company would not be smart. Servers will of course always be necessary as well.

I never said soon, I just said Microsoft's life as they know it depends upon getting a higher percentage of the mobile market. This isn't going to happen overnight, but the casual user will have no need for a PC within the next 10 years IMO and I believe MS is trying to position themselves accordingly.

I feel the same about my PC, I don't like running apps. But I will say that the things you can do on a tablet get better every year and the mere "portability" of smaller stronger is very appealing.

When the tech catches up and it is possible to run apps that are stronger that today's software, then we may see the end of PCs. But storage capacity, running a local server, faster stronger processors and apps that meet or beat current software will be a must to bring about the demise of the PC.

Well, it looks like I am sticking with my copy of Windows 7 Professional. I still haven't gotten the prompt to upgrade and I have completed all of the walk throughs to get it to pop up. thumbsdown

On one of my computers I'm running a copy of Win 7 that I purchased on eBay. I paid about 80% of the retail price for what was supposed to be a brand new legal copy from a US seller. I got a sealed retail package, license and documentation. I installed and licensed it without issue.

Several months later my windows shut down. I got a notice of invalid license. I called Microsoft like WTF? and sent proof of purchase, pics of the packaging and everything to customer support. They told me to send them the disk. I did and they responded that I had bought a bootleg copy and was just out my money. I called and raised cane until an agent gave me a license key. My windows has been fine ever since, but does not qualify for upgrade.

Another PC has a commercial copy of windows installed by the shop that custom built it, that copy does not qualify.

My laptop running Win 8.1 got the notification...

So I think it depends on rather you bought it from a certain PC Manufacturer Brand or a certain retail brand as to whether or not you get a free upgrade.

Personally, I think I'll stick with Win 7 for now.

I'll install it on a virtual machine - I've been running the preview for a few months on a VM and really like it. I probably won't upgrade my primary development machine for a while, but I may update one of my other systems (probably my sons smile ).

I envision a day when your work PC, is nothing more than your tablet/phone that you plug into a dock and it runs as your CPU for a desktop monitor, keyboard and mouse. We are very close to that, and in some ways already there. But eventually, you will take your work "PC" with you as your mobile work device.

A Surface tablet will do anything that 95% of office workers need, for a pretty inexpensive price.

Figure in cloud technology, and really, you will just need something that can connect you to the internet to work.

The "tower" will be extinct in all but the heavy power user needs.

I don't think that I want to be writing papers on a phone ..... or creating advertising pieces on a phone ... or straining my eyes to look at some tiny screen on a phone ........ and so on.

The phones are fine for some people, though I have no need for such things, as there is nothing online that I need so desperately that I cannot wait till I get home to look up.

I sent my 3rd text the other day. In my life. Some woman sent my phone a message, obviously for someone else, saying that she was in huge trouble, her car had broken don at someone's house, and she had to get to work, and needed the person she thought she was texting to pick her up. I sent a "wrong number" message that took me about 3 minutes to type out with the number keyboard. lol

Asa side note, I stopped at Wal Mart the other day to pick up a flash drive, and I was talking to the guy working there about computers, and he said that they now carry exactly one "tower" computer. The rest are either all in ones, laptops, or tablets.

I think that it would be pretty cool if they someday develop a computer that has a super thin keyboard, that you could just roll open, and then a holographic screen. Maybe even a holographic interface like in the Iron Man movies. Now that is tech I could use! wink

I have to say that I think that Windows 7 is the best O/S Microsoft has created ..... ever. I keep reading that 10 is much better than 7, and basically takes 7, adds the useful pieces of 8, and upgrades the whole thing to take it to a new level.

I guess I'll find out in a few days. wink

The PC isn't dying anymore than the mainframe is dying.

Is it in the system tray? On my laptop(WIn8), I did get the annoying popup that keeps bugging people. On my desktop(win7), I never get a popup, just an icon that sits idling in the system tray.

Yeah, checked there.

Oh well, I ended up deciding to bite the bullet and purchase it off of Newegg for the Pro version OEM. Cheapest price I could find. Also upgrading my SSD while I'm at it to get 500 gb.

Now, should I use my old SSD (128 gb) for Windows Backups or just for extra data storage? I'm currently using a 1 TB Internal HD for both backups and extra storage.

I was so mad that I didn't get it, but then again it probably didn't let me upgrade because I purchased this license from an old university for $10 from a promo deal they had with Microsoft when 7 just came out.

I was too excited to update to 10 so I just figured I should just pay for it.

No. It is an upgrade, not a formatted install

smile It won't die in the business world for a very, very long time from an application running standpoint, nor will mid-range or mainframes (though I haven't run across a mainframe in a while, mostly AS400's).

However, the vast majority of users will be on tablet (think Surface) within 10 years IMO. IT professionals will have PC's for a very , very long.

The upgrade doesn't come out until the 29th (tomorrow), so even if you did all the leg-work, the actual download and upgrade doesn't begin until the 29th, and I think they are doing a roll out, not necessarily everyone at one time.

Just curious, since those eligible for the upgrade have a year to get it and Microsoft is notorious for putting out upgrades that often require Raid, why not wait a few months to let others find all the problems and upgrade once the first update or two has been released?

Some people will do just that.

I seem to recall reading that this has been the most thoroughly testesd MS O/S ever. I seem to recall reading that there are more testers on this OS than on any in the past.

One thing I wantto mention. If you(in general) click on the square icon in the system tray, you will see a link that says "this PC is compatible" with a "view report" link. If you click on that link, you will see a report about your installed software and if something is not compatible. That way there are no surprises. I would suggest that people do this just in case they have an incompatible program that they cannot live without. I have 2 .... both spyware programs I tested out at one point ..... and neither of which I use at this time. (and at least one of which is an old version I have just never uninstalled)

However, I think that we should all know for sure whether or not the software we depend on is compatible .... so check it out.

You're going to have a few groups.

1) the tech folks, who do it because they want to check it out, or have to for work reasons. And are capable of installing it as a second OS or on another PC.

2) The folks who have no clue and just do it thinking they have to, and will freak when they reboot.

3) The folks who do it for the sake of being able to brag about having it, have no clue why they do it, and will just deal with what comes along.

and group 4) The Apple folks who will complain about how bad it is, how crappy it is compared to OSX, even though they don't have it and have never seen anything other than a screenshot of it. smile

Disclaimer: Group 4 applies to when Apple releases a new OS and the Windows people follow suit.

Personally, I am waiting a couple weeks, and will upgrade my home PC first, as rebuilding it in an emergency is not as crucial as if something goes wrong on my work PC where I have tons of programs to reload and reconfigure. smile

I really need to do a disc image again. smile

In reference to the Apple folks, I'm still running Mountain Lion (osx 10.8.6) even though Apple has offered Mavericks (osx 10.9) and is offering Yosemite (osx 10.10) for free.

That's why I'm curious, because I'm still sitting around waiting for the bugs to be fixed. wink

Well .. I am somewhat tech savvy, and am just doing it because of the excellent reviews I have read. I usually wait on new OS releases until all of the bugs are worked out, but I am going with this one right away.

I also have all of my data backed up, and I can wipe the drive and do a clean reinstall of 7 if I have to.

Ok, so is there a website for this? It is kind of hard to run the compatibility check when you don't have the icon in the system tray. When I Googled it, all I found were walk throughs on how to click the button. I'll be getting the new hard drive tomorrow and probably the OS on Monday.

I still can't believe that I almost didn't update, it would have been idiotic to do so. Luckily I remembered that. I just installed a bunch of new stuff last year such as new RAM which is currently useless after 4 gigs. I've got 28 gigs just sitting there doing nothing right now. I wanted no part of Windows 8 and decided to just wait when they said the upgrades would be free to see if I could jump up to 64 bit while I was at it.

As to computers vs tablets/phones, they have a long way to go before that is possible. Even with my beefed up work computer running on 64 bit, good 3d CAD Renderings can take an entire day. I can't imagine how long that would take on a tablet.

I've been using win 8.1 for a couple years now....Hate it. I'm waiting for MS to send me the link to upgrade ASAP that I pre-ordered a few weeks ago on my Windows laptop.

My laptop isn't a touch screen so 8.1 really sucks on it.

Does anyone know if they are still using the UI for touch screens for non touchscreen laptops and how win 10 works for all that?

Also does anyone have the link to the software that blocks the adds here?

Thanks in advance for any links and info

There is an icon on the bottom of my screen (where the volume control and printer ready button are) that says "get windows 10"

Been there for months..

Probably should click on it, as you'll need to register if you wish to upgrade.

Yup, that's what I did to pre order. MS said they'd contact me when 10 is available
