I've read about this being a phased release for quite awhile. I'm not sure how its a gaffe?

Nobody needs to wait.
Go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Click the 64-Bit Tool button, follow the directions.
BAM!

I am downloading it to a flash drive as we speak. I wish I would have known how little time it takes to start the download and I would have started it before I left the house this morning.

I will have Windows 10 today! grin wink

I am at 70% downloaded already.

Windows 10 = awesome! And the upgrade process was quite simple and decently quick.

I just finished mine, It took forever! (I downloaded mine though, it wasn't in the system tray)

I had one stinkin' program that was not compatible, and I figured "No problem". I did the uninstall during the "10" install .... the computer restarted ...... and ....... nothing.

I had to restart the install. banghead

So, it ran all the way through this ttim, and after about 3 hours total, it finished installing.

I have to look into why it takes so incredibly long to boot up. It is almost twice as long as my Windows 7 boot time. That's not a great point in its favor.

I do like the store .... at least the free stuff. That does make finding apps easier, especially since they did away with my 2 favorite time wasters in "Solitaire" and "Hearts". The "games" section takes forever to open too.

So far I am mixed on my feelings. I like a lot of the things in 10, and a lot of my programs actually wok better than in 7. However, the boot time is a major concern, and the loss of my favorite time wasters sucks. (lol) Overall, given the install issues, and the concerns I have listed here, I have to give 10 a 7 so far. It can go up if I can nail down the boot time problem.

Win10 is a huge improvement over Win8.

Not sure it's all that much better than Win7 though, but I haven't really gotten much time to mess with it.

It does seem fast, but I have a fresh (4 day old) clean install of Win7 before I did the upgrade, so my system if pretty empty right now, not bloated with all my additional software yet.

I think the icons are cheesy and very cheap looking, almost 8-bit Atari looking. smile

The tiles on the side of the start menu are OK, not sure they are all that useful though.

Going to have to find some time to just tinker and see what it does and doesn't do to make it worth an upgrade for a good stable Win7.

There are some"tiles" that I will never use, so I have to see if I can put something else in their place.

I see no need for the "Mail" and "Edge" tiles, when they can easily be placed on the task bar.

I wish I could find the darn accessories folder. (which seems to have disappeared) I am resizing a ton of photos for my church's website, and paint seems to be the easiest way to do it. I had to pin the darn thing to the taskbar so I wouldn't lose it.

I do see a lot of great thigns in this new O/S ..... but there is also a bunch of stuff I will never use.

I need to play around with this a lot mroe before I make a final determination as to whether I like it more than "7" or not.

Just right click on the tile and choose "unpin from start" You can drag and drop more useful things over there and they will take the form of a "tile" icon. You can also resize the start menu, so if you want it full screen like in Win8, you can. Tiles are too cluttered in my opinion, wish I could make that part of the start menu text and fit more in less space.

They renamed it "windows accessories", so look in the 'W' section of all apps (start > all apps > Windows accessories)

i put it on my laptop. But will likely keep my desktop on Win 7 for a longtime.

Thank you for the information. I saw the "unpin", and figured that's what it would do, but I clicked "turn the live tile off", and it did nothing. (at least nothing obvious)

Thanks for the info on the name change! That is hugely helpful! laugh

Yes! I got my "Gadgets" back! I love having a clock and Date on my desktop. (and the moon phase is kinda cool too)

Unfortunately, while I could have these in 7, evidently they did awau with them in 8 amd 10 ..... but as always, an enterprising person created a solution.

If anyone else loves desktop gadgets, and wants to keep them in "10", here is a program that lets you do just that. wink

Don't forget the search option.

Due to windows eight jumbled mess of crap, I got used to using search to find programs rather than scan through tiles and menus and clicking oddities hoping to find what I wanted.

Now I find I use it a lot on my Win7 PC as well when I know something is more than a couple menus deep.

Some tiles have animations or updates with them. Those are called "live tiles" For example, there was a sports tile that cycled between headlines. If you turn off live tiles, it will just be a static tile that says "sports"

Has the Windows 10 upgrade solved some of the graphic problems I have when I upgraded to Windows 8.1? Programs that once worked on my computer now do not work. I have upgraded all my drivers. It is Windows that is the problem. Anxious to hear what people have experienced.

It came early and is installed now. I'm exploring around right now and it is making my head hurt...but that is because the screen resolution sucks until I get my video card drivers downloaded. I guess this weekend will consist of me re-installing all of my programs (I of course had to do a clean install going from 32 bit to 64 bit).

Yeah. that surprised me that after an upgrade, and I had a clean install to upgrade from, it didn't transfer over my resolution setting, even with the latest drivers and all.

Highly recommend everyone, literally everyone, go through their Settings > Privacy and ASAP.

There are 13 screens of crap you'll likely want to turn off/disable/tweak...

Here's an article about it I came across last night...

http://bgr.com/2015/07/31/windows-10-upgrade-spying-how-to-opt-out/

There's a bunch of data saving stuff that comes out of the box as checkmarked. Go through all of those and opt-out of everything you aren't comfortable with.

I'm still a'waiting for my download. I know you can force it, but honestly? I don't care anymore. I like my Windows 8.1 with the Classic Shell running over it, so... whenever it's ready? that'll be fine.

I am happy I did the upgrade. There is a lot I like, and really, right now the only thing I dislike is how long it takes to start up when I restart the system. I did away with several start up programs, so hopefully that will help.

Boot time is noticeably slower. I found that removing the lock screen helps though. I am on a laptop/non-tablet so the lock screen is pretty pointless and annoying factoring you had/have to click to get to the login screen.

About how fast does it boot up from simply off to on (not a restart)?

I'll let you know next time I reboot. I'll shut down instead and then boot up clean. I hope that won't be for quite a while though.

15 seconds for me.

Wow, that is fast. The time from me hitting the power button to opening a folder is 32 seconds. I tried disabling AVG and Spybot on start up but that had no effect. I still have all of my Adobe stuff enabled, didn't try disabling that. I had a hard time installing that so I didn't want to mess with it now that it is working.

I still have another program to install and then I am done. It is a drafting program so it is a resources hog however the download on their website isn't working so I have to call on Monday. I doubt that will effect startup time however.

My old Windows 7 took 56 seconds. The Windows always loaded but I couldn't actually open anything for an additional 10-15 seconds. Windows 10 has allowed me to open a folder immediately so far.

I had Windows 7 down to about 35 seconds or so boot time.

I have been well over a minute on 10. Well over. I disabled several things that were starting up that I cannot recall starting before. Maybe I'll shut down and see hos it does this time.

When you guys are timing bootup, is it from the point you turn it on until you reach your desktop screen, or when you are actually able to open an application?

I get to the desktop really quick, but then I get the busy circle thing on my cursor. It actually takes about a minute and change to be able to open an app...

As I said, my timing was from pushing the power button to opening a folder.

I finally found a download for the drafting program on a re-sellers website so I've got that going right now.

Now I went to re-set up my applications shortcuts on my keyboard but realized that it's program wasn't on my computer yet so I went to download it and couldn't find a Windows 10 compatible one yet. I tried the Windows 8 one but it didn't work. Now, who makes my keyboard? It's a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 banghead You'd think that SOMEBODY at Microsoft would make sure that their own products are compatible.

Mine is to a usable desktop.

Actually, for me, from login to using an app seems faster. I notice the difference going from restart to the log in screen .... which takes about a week ..... or it seems like it anyway. (from the BIOS screen to the Login screen)

I hve Windows 10 Home on my system, and there is no group policy editor, and I had to use the regedit route. It worked perfectly. I haven't times it, but I would guess that it took almost a full minute off the boot time.

It still feels like it takes too long to go from restart to opening an app, but it is much, much better with that stupid lock screen being turned off...... and I don't reboot my computer all that often anyway.

Upgraded to 10 over the weekend. Everything was working fine until I started up a program. Crashed to a black screen and powered off. I restarted and my HP laptop won't boot up windows 10 now. I can reset the laptop but it says I'll keep my data but I'll lose all the apps and programs that didn't come with the laptop. Not a good experience so far.

Ouch... honestly, and I'm not trying to piss ya off or insult in any fashion, but that's the only horror story I've read thus far about the upgrade.

My Mom wasn't able to download the file, kept getting some error, but I only had to uninstall Avast Antivirus and it's installed seamlessly.

Just out of curiosity, can you disclose what program you tried accessing that started the whole thing?

Can you boot to safe mode? (you may need to check your computer's website to see what kep to use to access startup options)

If you can. you might be able to remove Windows 10, and return to your old O/S until you can research what program might be causing problems. (start, settings, update and security, and then go back to Windows (7, 8, 8.1)

I would try that before wiping everything out. You also should save your files if you haven't already done so while you have the opportunity.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

My Mom wasn't able to download the file, kept getting some error, but I only had to uninstall Avast Antivirus and it's installed seamlessly.

Just out of curiosity, can you disclose what program you tried accessing that started the whole thing?

It was Civil3D 2014 by Autodesk. It was the first program I tried.

Ytown..I'll give safe mode a shot tonight.

Strange, I've successfully ran AutoCAD and Sketchbook Pro. I don't use AutoCAD too much as I mainly use Vectorworks but those are both Autodesk programs and they aren't having problems on my end.

A quick google search on Autodesk website revealed
"Win 10 is an unsupported OS at the moment......"

Yeah not sure what happened.

This is win 8.1/10 safe mode on my laptop and what I see when it starts up now. See link.

I've tried the system restore.....No system restore points avail. frown Next step is startup settings. If that doesn't work I'll try c:/prompt to copy everything to my home network server. Then I'll reset the Windows POS laptop. I only use a windows laptop for my Autodesk programs. I store all my backup files on the server but not my apps or program files. I use Apple devices for everything else.
