How odd, I've got it running. Granted I haven't tried doing anything crazy yet. The only issues I had were with Adobe.

Just out of curiosity, can you disclose what program you tried accessing that started the whole thing?

It was Civil3D 2014 by Autodesk. It was the first program I tried.

Ytown..I'll give safe mode a shot tonight.

A quick google search on Autodesk website revealed
"Win 10 is an unsupported OS at the moment......"

Autodesk disclaims that about win 8 also which has been running fine for me for a couple years. Besides their software shouldn't crash and burn a Windows install. Worse case It won't run on a win 10. Which is what I was trying to test.

All is good... Went safe mode then went thru the settings system backup and found a button to restore back to 8.1. Microsoft claims this is only good for 30 days after installing v.10.

Yep. After 30 days the ability to revert back to a prior version of Windows goes away. I'm not going back. I love this new version of Windows. However, some may have certain programs that rhey cannot replace, that are incompatible, and makes it impossible for them to upgrade.

Any AutoCAD program user should have waited a long, long time before trying that maneuver.

They are historically bad/slow about making software compatible with the next generation. You will need at least 6 months before attempting that.. Probably with a version that has been validated against Win10.

Nothing in my inbox, I am frustrated.

I'm guessing the Microsoft 10 Upgrade "Your Win10 upgrade is ready to install" notification. from MS.

LOL ...Autocad and the verticals are dinosaurs for sure. Doesn't worry me to try it though, I know I can get everything back from my home server or the cloud.

I worked at Autodesk for 5 years. So I know what your saying I also know when a software co. says it's not supported it's because they haven't tested it on that OS yet. I worked in QA and now most of that work has been shopped out to the Chinese offices, so it's ten times worse then it used to be. And now China has all the source code....Yikes look out ADSK!

But I still don't think my windows 10 install was hosed completely by starting Autocad on it. I think I got a bad Win10 build or I crashed out when something else was going on in the background. I'm going to try again when I get the MS notification. I hate Win 8.1 and want it gone sooner rather than later.

In my field, most people use Macs. When Autocad pulled out of that platform, everyone switched to Vectorworks. It's back now but it's too late, Vectorworks is now industry standard. The only thing that makes me mad is Vectorworks now does yearly updates. Luckily as an educator, I don't pay for them however a lot of freelancers are now several years behind and you can only backsave 2 versions on the educational version.

What field is that? I've never used vectorworks I'm in infrastructure/Mapping/GIS which uses alot of online mapping services and feature data objects (FDO) connections

I'm seeing a switch from AutoDesk to BricsCad for us infrastructure folks because Autodesk announced it won't sell perpetual licenses after the 2016 releases. Meaning they sell their products on subscription only. $7k a seat up front and $700-$1000 dollars a year to use it after that. What a rip off for their antiquated software that's full of bugs.

Bricscad uses native .dwg files. Highly recommended.

OK, I was reading this article, and I found a couple of interesting things about Windows 10.

2 of my favorites are that you can right click on the start button, and open up a whole new "power user" menu. This is not what I would usually consider a power user feature, but there are some useful things here, like a quick shut down/restart, and access to the control panel and other such wonderment. wink Handy, if not spectacular.

The other tip I really like is that you can go to a particular letter in your program list (on the start menu "All Apps" list) by clicking on any letter header, which then opens up an alphabetical list you can easily click on. I hate having to scroll all the way through my horrific list of programs just to get to the W's. This is so mush easier, and makes so much sense, that I am kind of surprised that it is in there. rofl

There are probably better explanations on the link.

Here's another one, (though I HATE the name on this)

right click on your desktop, and create a new folder, copy and paste this to rename the folder: (it has to be exact)

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

This opens a menu of hundreds of settings in one easy place. Just be careful with this.

I basically only have AutoCAD for two reasons: 1) It's free for educators 2) To open DWG's with the wrong settings so that I can fix that and import them into Vectorworks.

My one complaint with Vectorworks is that it uses it's own file structure so it is hard to import DWG's sometimes...thus why I have AutoCAD installed.

I am in Entertainment Lighting Design. It is pretty much a one stop shop. I can create my draftings, and 3D renderings all in one program. This takes a couple of programs in AutoCAD. Live Entertainment is strange, we are split up. Scenic Designers all use AutoCAD, Lighting Designers all use Vectorworks. There is some in each that use the opposite, however more and more Scenic Designers are switching to Vectorworks because of how buggy AutoCAD has gotten.

Gotten? LOL

Now they are going around buying up competition & incorporating that software and deserting much of their own created buggy software. Which should be a good thing but it's not because they can't really rid themselves of all their old BS.

It sucks the only way I can hover my mouse over my system tray icons and get the "tooltip" or notification upon hover and idle is I have to be in "tablet mode"...

Sometimes I like to hover over to quickly see battery life and a few apps I have that run in the sys tray have tooltips that popup useful info. Now I have to open and engage the application to get the info.

Wtf up with that? Only thing I can get to popup a notification is the the "Action Center". Am I the only one? Google hasn't helped.

Do you have Avast or any other anti-virus? If so, I'd recommend uninstalling it then trying the Windows install again...

Thanks for the reply. All I have is Windows Defender. No other anti-virus that is always running.

My Mom was getting an error code that I was able to Google, if it's giving you a code or error text, paste it in Google and see if anyone else is/has encountered the same issue. May even be some instructions to get going.

You have to be logged in as an administrator, not a standard account. it took me awhile to figure that out. Simply typing the admin password in when it pops up wasn't enough, I had to log on as the admin THEN run it.

Try not using the auto-update, and DL the file via page https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Thanks. I found a video that might help.

Honestly? I don't even know if I want to deal with this. This is one of those things that could turn out to be a disaster for me.

I'll think about if I wanna do this in the next couple of days or just call my computer guy to do if for me (sighs).

This is the route I took on release day with the Kid's computer. It was pretty much flawless.

Yea!!!! I'm good to go on my desktop computer. Windows 10 is finally here at the 3rd_and_20 compound.

I will do the same thing I did (watch video posted above) for my laptop in the next day or two and update that one next. It's only like a year old but slow, like molasses. laugh I pretty much only use it on game day chat.

I am running Classic Shell with Windows 10. (Yes, it's not just for Windows 8 & 8.1.) So far I think I like it better with Classic Shell running on top of it...

i'm mostly used to it now, but I still prefer the Win7 Start menu to the Win10 live tiles... so I can see why some would want classic shell.

Since I figured out how to do things in 10, I kind of prefer the live tiles.

I set up all of my most used programs, and I love the ability to click on a letter and then have the ability to go right to an alphabetical section. It took a little getting used to, but I prefer it now.

Okay, I turned off Classic Shell to play with Windows 10 without it on, and now there is no start menu on the left-hand side, all there is is those stupid tiles floating all over my desktop.

Where-o-where did the Windows 10 start menu go? I hate just tiles!

How do I get the Windows 10 start menu back (I know there are some tiles on the start menu, but it's not ALL tiles, like now).

Thanks in advance.
