You evaluate where things are today and how it happened. On those facts, you have nothing to say worthy of comment.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I was a Johnny guy, and wanted the Browns to draft him. I'm still holding out hope that he turns into a really good QB, but I totally understand anyone who has already given up on him. Even I will admit that his odds aren't good at this point. We've seen this movie before.

I think the first four days of camp have shown some encouraging signs regarding Manziel.
I don't think it's as hopeless as many might believe.
I even think there's a chance he could beat out McCown. Admittedly that could have been 1% at the start of camp and might only be 5% now, but at least it's trending in the right direction.
All reports are that he's different. Practicing with a purpose. Making good plays. Night and day from last year. And I think Pettine and Farmer are handling the situation very well. Their handling of this is allowing Manziel to grow, IMO.

I thought I heard a reporter say that Flip mentioned he is starting to see his second and third reads now.
I mean the good and elite QB's do that in their sleep, but it's better than the alternative.

It's definitely better than the alternative.
They've also said his footwork has improved. They said he looked good in the shotgun today and made some throws. Body language and purpose is complete 180 in general. Read today that his bread and butter throw is the quick slant and he's been throwing it well. Also read that when he sets his feet he really gets good zip on intermediate throws. And that he's really not leaving the pocket at all.
And since day 1 there have really been no negative reports on his play.
Considering there was really nothing positive last year, I think this is all very positive. I'll take it.
While it could all mean nothing, I like reading this much better than what I thought I was going to reading.

JMHO..how can you write this.... but I totally understand anyone who has already given up on him...JM won Heisman Trophy, he played TWO yrs in college, he's got 1 and quarter REAL NFL experience and he's 22...I FULLY admit I didn't want him..maturity, size...BUT, he's ours AND he could EASILY still be Texas AM quarterback, he NEEDS QB WORK, EXPERIENCE, and needs to keep his priorities right...I'm all for him sitting and learning unless he wins the QB battle...I doubt it, but I'm all in letting him mature the right way....whine vs wine...smile...mix it up alittle.....GO Browns!!!!

Not sure if you're trolling or not, but winning the Heisman has no bearing on your fit in the NFL... There's no doubt that Manziel did not put 100% in last year, so there's room for improvement. Fans can only go by what they see, so how can you blame them when it was total crap on the field... Even then, you can put all the work in and still not be anything more than backup material. See Colt McCoy. In Johnny's short time (and I will give you that) he looked a lot like Colt did. Just absolutely lost with no vision of the field. He has a long way to go but most of us are pulling for him.

If Johnny seizes the opportunity and lights it up this year, I will have completely reevaluate my outlook on how this team will do this year.
We NEED good QB play and it ain't happening w/McCown. If Johnny can somehow find the magic......all bets are off and we could make some noise this year.
I know it's probably too good to be true to even wish for, but hey............I am praying Johnny Be Good!

I think Manziel might seize the opportunity but it won't be this year. I guess I'm concerned by that only because that means we will have to suffer through this year.
I really believe all hope is not lost with him though.
And maybe I'm imagining this but the offense got terrible reviews during camp last year. Other than day 1 we are not getting that at all this year, either when McCown is in or Manziel. Considering most media is just waiting to slam Manziel I find this encouraging.

It would be nice to have Johnny's potential come to fruition... We don't have big play WR's so having a guy who can extend plays would be quite ideal.
I know people made a big deal of him not looking as quick and agile on an NFL field, but I believe part of that was the hesitancy and lack of feel for the NFL game.
The improv part of Johnny's game cannot come into play until he can do the other stuff. The under center, staying in the pocket, regular QB stuff. If he can ever get that going, look out. I believe he will be able to extend plays. I think that's where everyone's doubts come. Being able to read defenses and make on the fly changes. We'll see.
McCown can get this team going, but he is going to have to play really well and have the running game backing him up. And we cannot be talking about receivers dropping passes. Margin for error with this offense is pretty small.

the browns drafted a guy in the first round who has not shown to be elite at making 5 and 7 steps drops from a tight pocket and throwing quick one reads over a stacked OL - with a TE strong side and a back crowding him in pass pro or running play action. With practice, he can be plenty good enough at it, but that's not why he won the heisman and that's not why he was a legit first round talent.
he was a legit first round talent because he was the most brilliant spread QB ever seen, and took maximum advantage of space in the shotgun, quick and comprehensive field vision, taking the initiative from the pocket and turning it into first downs and touchdowns (in both pass and run game). he took initiative with good vision, quick release, and the ability to get the ball out from anywhere, at any time.
that is why he draws the favre comparisons. he doesnt have the cannon favre had, but he has the same ability within slightly smaller windows, and has much more scrambling ability. when the shit hits the fan, he is brilliant if he has a little space and if the team knows how to hold blocks, seek the next block, and run 'way points' in your routes and not quit and stare if the first read isnt thrown.
if the first or second read is open, he can hit it as well as most NFL starters. If it isnt, he can buy time and make things happen in ways no one else in the NFL can approach.
but you never saw that from last year's scheme.
taking the initiative away from him, and giving it to the DE in a zone read, is the absolute worst thing you could dream up for manziel's skillset, and followed only by QB draws against a spy with no threat of a hot read and no space from which to take the initiative.
he is not going to outrun a safety spy to the corner in the NFL who has the angle. but if he's in the pocket with some space, that same spy will have his jock laying on the turf with manziel 15 yards downfield before he knows it. shanahan just got an F in fundamtental player evaluation.
Shocking update from first week in training camp: "Wow, manziel looks really good in the shotgun!" #dumbass fan who would have been a better oc than shanahan.

It appears from a lot of reports that Manziel has improved, but I want to hear it from the players mouths. I am reading a lot of praise for McCown from the players but none really for Manziel from his teammates.

WE will learn a great deal about Johnny and the Browns during their scrimmage on friday. From the highlights I have seen of Johnny throwing the ball, he looks night and day different from last year. Last year he looked stiff and robotic. Thats not saying he wont revert when the bullets start flying but its a very positive sign. Plus he is hitting about 70% of his passes without dumping down and last year it was slightly above 50.

Quite a change from last year when getting a report about the browns had nothing to do with the team, but everything to do with Johnny Manziel.. Seemed like it was Johnny 24x7 I kinda find this refreshing

I am reading a lot of praise for McCown from the players but none really for Manziel from his teammates. Nobody really interviews the #2 Crowd that Manziel throws to. Most won't be on the team. So I would give that a big reason why there are not props to Manziel from our players - next time Lenz or Jennings WRs get interviewed maybe they will have props on him. Btw coaches do seem hesitant to go overboard although they have recently opened the door stating McCown starting day one is not written in stone.
I don't think they want the Manziel Distraction and make it into a controversy. Silently he is competing and moving up closer to McCown. Not that McCown is dropping just Manziel rising.

Most likely, reporters just haven't asked the players, or the players aren't being coached to talk up Manziel. It's very understandable that the team would want Manziel talk to be in the background... because that is where he is. McCown is the starter, and he is also the new guy, so that is who people ask about and talk about.
Browns is the Browns

This has been said about his off the field stuff and his work ethic.. it's just going to take a little time before we see how much difference that makes on the field.. Had he been working this hard all last year and we still weren't hearing positive things it would worry me.. but in my mind I've basically written last year off..

I have not posted much regarding Manziel but from my perspective he was difficult to get a handle on during last years draft. I considered him a high risk/high reward pick. I did not want to draft him and was very surprised to see videos of fans erupting when he was selected. I was in favor of hopefully getting Carr in the second round. I was on & off about Teddy too. Every time I saw him on live TV his receivers seemed so wide open I wondered how he would perform against tighter NFL coverage.
I am willing to give Johnny more time to develop, and this will sound strange, but the Bengal game was so bad I figured no one could be that bad. Everyone has a bad game (I thought Dalton against us in Cinn last year was about the most putrid performance I ever watched)and he is better than that. I realize you have a much better window with Dalton.
I know Josh is not the answer long term (and may not be short term)so we obviously have a huge ? at that position.
I had the same feeling about Weeden at draft time I did with Johnny. Thought he might be OK, or perform as he did. Did not want to draft him either.
This year should answer some questions and clear up our draft direction next year.

Nice to read, but to temper that a bit - two passes does not a career make. It won't even make him a starter.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

This year should answer some questions and clear up our draft direction next year.
Mark my words... saying it now: QB will forcefully be the #1 focus on next year's draft. Someone from 92.3 afternoon show (sorry I don't know names) said the Browns should start JF and let him make or break his own future, as we will either win and not need to focus on Qb, or more likely we will lose, have a good top pick TO focus on the drafting of a Qb. Face it, we get another avg season with middle to later rounds first picks, we no longer have ammo to move up. We'll be in need of a Qb but in no position to acquire one worth a damn. People underestimate how seriously hardcore JF head up his arse his first year hurt the team and short and long term... All jmo

My hope is he pulled it out and that will improve his play dramatically but I am not holding my breath. Crash/burn or succeed with JFF starting the season is one option but I am confident the coaching staff & GM won't do that & will play Josh to get wins. Should be an interesting season. My fear in tanking this season is that I feel we have a decent core of talent and will lose people and attitudes will erode further without some success soon. But what do I know. My biggest draft prediction blunder was thinking Peyton Manning was a risk coming out of college.

My comments weren't fully directed towards you or your comments, sorry for not specifying that!
I was throwing in what 92.3 said for food for thought. Me personally, if he can't legit beat out in camp, it's silly to think he'll excel in real time. The staff has been riding the best player on the field motto since they got here, I don't see them modifying that for JF.
But, I get the sink or swim aspect too with JF. It's a delicate situation that become even more fragile with the type of year he had last season.

This is fantastic news. The thing we were hoping is that Josh would play really well and Johnny would first make it a competition and then beat him out and Josh has played really well and Johnny is now making it a competition.
