Not defending Gilbert to the hilt cause he is not earning the starting reps.

But difference between him and Haden was the talent at the position. We had no depth. I'm just glad that he isn't being forced to start as an incomplete product.

I don't like the fact that he isn't working as hard as DeSir but then again nobody probably is.

Also from all that I read he is a lay back attitude very calm so its hard to get some reads on him. He also plays that way similar to his persona.

jmho Bust no - living up to his projections...far from it.

This is the first time that I can recall that you didn't call Gilbert a bust honestly, and I can't seem to recall many positive things about him in your posts. And that's OK! We disagree on what we saw from him in his limited playing time last year.

But I do agree with you, and I think most here do, that there are legit concerns, ones which you've highlighted.

From what I'm hearing about Gilbert, my impression is that he's having the damnedest time finding his motivation. I think we'd all assume that this should be the least of a player's issues. I'm spit balling here, but I wonder if the fact that playing football is now an actual job is what's killing his mojo? I don't think its unreasonable to think that a kid with natural talent and ability has been able to get through high school and college and football was always "fun and games". He never really had to 'work' when it came to football. It doesn't happen all that often, but occasionally there are top college prospects that get to the pros and realize it ain't for them.

Is the entire thing on NFLN? Or are they doing to have it in the studio and just show clips of the scrimmage as it happens? Not sure anyone would know

How to Watch?

The full scrimmage will not be streamed live. However, the NFL Network will be running a 1-hour special from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The program, titled "Inside Training Camp Live with the Browns," will be hosted by Mike Mayock and Solomon Wilcots. There is expected to be a mix of highlights and commentary during the one-hour special.

Then, from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the network is airing "Training Camp Primetime with the Browns," where the network will provide more highlights and some interviews with Browns players and/or coaches.

Wow that sucks but I will know next year i dont need sunday ticket lol will just do stuff until 430 come home watch the games online. Main reason I liked watching live was the Chat feature in here and with it still not working. Might aswell save money and watch the delay. Actually will cancel direct tv all together when this season is over lol

Is the practice worth driving up from Dayton? Just thinking about watching a QB play makes me want to puke...

JC,

I'd just like to say if you're looking for some free street parking, university district doesn't have a lot of students right now so there's street parking all around high.

Do you have tickets? It is sold out - 70,000 were sold (i.e. given away) in like 2 days.

I think it'll be cool to see the Browns in Ohio Stadium. Dayton isn't that far of a drive, but it is just a practice.

for anyone who's attended training camp or the scrimmage last night, do you know the title of that rap song that continuously plays? It has like a howl in the chorus and the players were singing with it throughout during TC?

This may seem confusing to most lol

*GENERAL QUESTION*

Has anyone heard much about Dray this offseason? I know we typically mention him as being part of a power couple with Barnidge. I don't recall hearing much of anything about him this year though.

I was just thinking about that myself. I have heard a little about Housler, (and Pluto seems to think that he'll almost certainly make the team) some things about Barnidge, and a lot about Bibbs .... but nothing at all about Dray.

Obligatory "forgot about Dray" post.

Yeah nobody has really mentions him other than Pettine referencing him as a good blocker. I think Housler is on the outside looking in right now.

I agree. Unless Housler really shows something why Browns keep him? Get Bibbs playing.

This team isn't desperate to field players. For these FA veterans, I think they need to prove they are considerably better than the younger guys. Otherwise, what is the point? Obviously, if the young guy is struggling, you'll keep the vet.

Housler is gone IMO ... Barnidge, Dray, and Bibbs

He is back out there today. The players aren't in pads so the day seems light in terms of workload.

I wouldn't read too much into this considering the guys aren't in pads and this seems like a very light day, but Erving is the RG w/ the ones, Greco w/ the twos.

Its pretty big considering this is the first time he has gotten reps with the 1s during TC. This is generally the week where competition really heats up. I expect we will see johnny, Shelton and Orchard to get a lot of first team reps moving forward as well.

Alarm...Alarm...Alarm.

We heard this very same thing last year. What the hay. This is concerning young RBs wanting to waltz through training camp. I hope one of these un-drafted guys seizes the moment.

I have a gut feeling West will be cut. Draughn's injury better be "for real" if he wants to make the team as well ... he's got his opportunity

Thought I saw Dray with the 1's in the scrimmage #81 (not the first set but second. Also saw him out there with 2's

thought we were going to carry 4 TE cause we are running a lot of 2 TE sets??? If three I can see Hausler going we didn't spend too much on him.

RBs...I thought the team shut them down with the Hammy's maybe he was referring to Droughns?? Hard to break away when out with injury. 2 most likely were West and Duke...Crowell is solid but I think he has a tough time picking up the playbook cause the Coaches for some reason don't think of him in high regard.

jmho

Bad news for the RB corp ... maybe pick someone off waivers?

Winston/West/Duke look to be a disappointment in the eyes of their coach

Browns running backs coach: 'It just bothers me that guys don't want to be the lead bell-cow guy'

Browns running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery called out his players Sunday after practice because no one at the position has seized control of the starting job.

"How can you play and not want to be a starter?" Montgomery said after the ninth full-squad practice of training camp. "It just bothers me that guys don't want to be the lead bell-cow guy. This game gives you so much. I always talk to them about what this game gives you as a young person, but what it does for them in life and to their families. So if you want to be a backup, then be a backup. But I mean you're going to get replaced. At some point, you've got to be a starter if you want to hang around."

Montgomery didn't single out a specific player he's waiting to take the reins.

But the Browns entered camp with Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West and rookie Duke Johnson competing for the top spot on the depth chart. Crowell is the only one who has been healthy throughout, though Wilbert doesn't believe he has capitalized to the fullest.

"The fact is that you’re looking for that guy you can just strap the saddle on and they just say, 'Hey, I want the job,'" Montgomery said. "Right now, it’s a close race.

"These kids here have to realize what's important for them now. If I want to make money and get the next contract, I've got to show something. I really have to show something, and right now I think the importance of that is missing."

Montgomery said Crowell , who entered the NFL last year as an undrafted rookie, being the only one in a three-man race who has remained healthy doesn't guarantee he'll be the lead back.
"No, it doesn't mean that because he's got to show me that he's hungry," Montgomery said. "And [what] I mean by hungry, if you want to be a starter, you practice like a starter and you do the things that you'd want. You take care of your body. You show up and do the things that are going to keep you healthy, get treatment after practice, hydrate, do all the little things you have to do in order to be that guy."

The stable of running backs has been riddled with injuries.
Johnson has been sidelined since he suffered a left hamstring injury Aug. 1, and coach Mike Pettine said the third-round draft pick from the University of Miami won't play Thursday in the preseason opener Thursday night against Washington.
West, a third-round pick in last year's draft, returned to practice Sunday. He had been sitting out with a left calf injury since Aug. 1.

But it wasn't a net gain for the Browns because Shaun Draughn suffered a left thumb injury Friday during the Orange & Brown Scrimmage, a disappointing development for the under-the-radar veteran who had been the most productive running back in the early stages of camp. Draughn didn't practice Sunday, but he was on the field wearing a cast on his left hand.

Pettine said Draughn's thumb is not broken to his knowledge.
"He took a shot on his thumb," Pettine said. "So it'll be casted for a couple days. Not sure of the course of action just yet. It's nothing serious where he's definitely out with it. We'll just have to wait a couple days to determine the best course of treatment for it."

Rookie fullback Malcolm Johnson (shoulder) has been out since Aug. 4 and undrafted rookie running back Luke Lundy (concussion) since Aug. 2. Running back Glenn Winston has yet to practice in this camp. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Aug. 6.

Montgomery suggested his players should have entered camp in better shape.

"The disappointing thing was that all those guys approaching here and not being in tip-top shape," Montgomery said. "I think that was a total setback, and now they are climbing back up hill and that's why they're taking a backseat right now.

"If you're going to be a running back, your job is to get hit, and your job is being able to bounce back from injuries really quickly because it's most like playing a game every week. Each day you've got to be healthy and ready to go and you've got to play injured, you've got to play sore and you've got to play banged up. And if you can't play with those things there, you really can't play."

Color me fuzzy, but isn't this the exact opposite of what they wanted out of the RB's last year? I know Tate was supposed to be the guy, but there were some concerns about him being a 3 down back. When he got hurt and eventually benched, it sounded like they were happy with RB by committee, going so far as to say they would play whoever had the 'hot hand' so to speak. RB by committee is the impression of how we were going to go about this season too.

If they truly want to have a feature back, they should say so and declare the position open for 1 man, and 1 man only.
